    Synchronies in mental development: an epigenetic perspective (1978)

    Description: Early mental development is analyzed from an evolutionary viewpoint and related to the dynamic interplay of genetic programming, maturational status, and environmental influence. Data are reported from a large sample of twins and siblings who have been tested longitudinally from 3 months to 6 years of age. Monozygotic twins became increasingly concordant with age and also paralleled each other for the spurts and lags in development. Dizygotic twins became less concordant with age and eventually matched their singleton siblings as closely as one another.     Description: When adenosine deaminase activity is inhibited, low concentrations of adenosine are toxic to human lymphoblast mutants that are unable to convert adenosine to intracellular nucleotides. In order to identify the mediator of this cytotoxicity, we searched for a cytoplasmic protein capable of binding adenosine with high affinity.     Description: Response characteristics of taste neurons in the sheep solitary tract and nuclei alter during development. Solitary tract cells in younger fetuses respond to stimulation of the tongue with fewer salts and acids than do cells in older fetuses, lambs, and adults. Further, responses to specific salts and acids develop in a particular sequence, not randomly.     Description: Retinal growth in young Sebastes diploproa involves the succession of three distinct cone patterns. Development of the final pattern with the loss of single cones occurs in close temporal association with a permanent migration from the surface to deep water.     Description: Explants of human chorion-decidual tissue obtained at delivery from normal, full-term pregnancies synthesize and secrete prolactin. This hormone is indistinguishable from pituitary prolactin by chromatographic, electrophoretic, immunologic, and receptor assay techniques.     Infant astigmatism measured by photorefraction (1978)

    Description: Photorefraction of a sample of 93 infants of ages 1 day to 12 months showed that 63 percent of the subjects had astigmatism of 0.75 diopter or greater, and 12 percent greater than 2 diopters. Seventy percent of these astigmatisms were in the horizontal-vertical meridians. By comparison, only 8 percent of a sample of 26 adults tested by the same method showed astigmatism (all 0.75 to 1 diopter).
