Description: Photographs of the surface of the planet Mars which were obtained by the Mariner 9 space probe are presented. Areas of investigation during the Mariner 9 flight involved television coverage, ultraviolet spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, infrared radiometry, S-band occultation, and celestial mechanics. Descriptions of the photographs are provided to further identify the surface features and the coordinates of the area photographed are included. Emphasis is placed on the visual evidence of the effects of wind in shaping the Martian surface. Photographs of cloud formations and dust storms are analyzed.

Description: The space shuttle is discussed as a reusable space vehicle operated as a transportation system for space missions in low earth orbit. Space shuttle studies and operational capabilities are reported for potential missions indicating that about 38 percent are likely to be spacelab missions with the remainder being the replacement, revisit, or retrieval of automated spacecraft.

Description: The Apollo Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) is discussed. The United States and the Soviet Union have agreed to develop compatible rendezvous and docking systems which will provide a basis for docking and rescue on future spacecraft of both nations. The ASTP mission will include testing the rendezvous system in orbit, verifying techniques for transfer of astronauts and cosmonauts, and conducting experiments while docked and undocked. Diagrams of the spacecraft and systems involved in the tests are presented. The prime contractors for the equipment are identified. Biographical data on the astronauts participating in the program are provided.

Description: The Synchronous Meteorological Satellite (SMS), which is scheduled for launch 16 May 1974 is described along with the data transmission system. The Carrier Balloon System is discussed. The primary type of data to be obtained in conjunction with SMS and Nimbus F are meteorological, oceanographic, seismic, and tsunami information. The Space Environment Monitoring System is also described.

Description: Alternating field demagnetization experiments have been conducted on representative samples of the carbonaceous meteorites (carbonaceous chondrites and ureilites). The results indicate that many, if not all, of these meteorites possess an intense and stable magnetic moment of extraterrestrial origin. Thermomagnetic analyses have been conducted on samples of all known carbonaceous meteorites. In addition to yielding quantitative magnetite estimates, these studies indicate the presence of a thermally unstable component, troilite, which reacts with gaseous oxygen to form magnetite. It is proposed that the magnetite found in some carbonaceous chondrites resulted from the oxidation of troilite during the early history of the solar system. The formation of pyrrhotite is expected as a natural consequence of magnetite formation via this reaction. Consideration is given to the implications of magnetite formation on paleointensity studies.

Description: Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted on a .004 scale model (34-OTS) orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket booster combined as an integrated vehicle in the NASA/MSFC 14 x 14 inch trisonic wind tunnel. The primary test objective was to determine the effect of a full length orbiter/external tank fairing on axial force. Secondary objectives were to define the static stability characteristics of the mated vehicle configuration with fairings over a Mach number range of 0.6 thru 4.96. Six component aerodynamic force and moment data were recorded over an angle of attack range from -10 deg to 10 deg at 0 deg sideslip angle and from -10 deg to 10 deg sideslip range at 0 deg and 5 deg angle of attack. Plotted and tabular results are presented herein.

Description: The Planetary Mission Model, NASA's program of future solar system exploration for the years 1973-1990, is presented. The model is based on a continuation of the balanced exploration philosophy, tempered by a conception of the realities of technology availability and fiscal constraints. It envisions the continued use of existing spacecraft technology (i.e., Mariner, Viking, and Pioneer) with only evolutionary changes, but with the introduction of atmospheric probe technology in the late 70's. The Titan/Centaur vehicle would be in use through 1980, and solar-electric propulsion (SEP) capability would be introduced in about 1979. Beyond 1980, shuttle capability is assumed. A brief explanation of the rationale behind the sequences at the following targets is presented: Mercury, Venus, Mars, the outer planets, and comets and asteroids.

Description: Review of the considerations leading to the development of the Space Shuttle system, followed by a description of the system and an analysis of the current program development status. The Space Shuttle system arose out of a need for a reusable vehicle that could routinely carry large payloads (up to 65,000 lb) into earth orbit and return on a cost-effective basis. The system, as currently baselined, consists of a manned reusable Orbiter vehicle and the booster hardware for ground launching. The proposed Orbiter will be 123 feet long, double delta-winged, and roughly the size of a DC-9. The Orbiter will normally carry a crew of four who will work without space suits in a shirtsleeve environment. The Orbiter will be boosted into space through the simultaneous operation of two solid propellant booster rockets and the Orbiter's three high-pressure liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen main engines. The Orbiter will have reusable external insulation, since each vehicle will have a design life of ten years.

Description: Initial difficulties encountered with the launch and operational deployment of the Skylab vehicle are described in terms of early indications of hardware failures, ground-based efforts at diagnosing the nature and significance of damage, and organization of improvized means and procedures for repair operations. Attention is given to heating and power-supply problems stemming from the loss of a micrometeoroid shield and a solar cell array. Systems engineering problems arising from the necessity of achieving a compromise among thermal, electrical, and stabilization requirements are explained, and repair solutions and operations in space and on the ground are described in detail.-
