    Description: We present results from magma–carbonate interaction experiments designed to shed light on the geochemical evolution of clinopyroxene in the Roman Province (central Italy). Atmospheric pressure experiments were performed at 1140, 1160 and 1180 °C under NNO,MHand air oxygen buffering conditions. The starting materials were a shoshonite and a phonotephrite doped with different amounts of CaO and CaO + MgO whose stoichiometric proportions reproduced the assimilation by magmas of calcite and dolomite, respectively. The results show that clinopyroxenes, spinels and residual glasses are ubiquitous phases in all run-products. Calcite-doped runs crystallize more clinopyroxene than dolomite-doped runs at the same conditions. This leads to the formation of strong desilicated CaO-rich melts showing compositions comparable to those of magmatic skarns. During magma–carbonate interaction, the content of Fe3+ in clinopyroxene increases with increasing fO2 promoting the substitution of Al for Si in tetrahedral site. Local charge imbalances are also compensated by the incorporation of highly charged cations, such as Ti, into the crystal lattice. According to this cation substitution, Al–Ca–Fe3+–Ti-rich clinopyroxenes of the skarn environment testify to continuous CO2 fluxes produced by the thermal decomposition of carbonate wall-rocks. Nevertheless, the oxidative capacity of CO2 progressively decreases from the skarn shells towards the interior of the magma chamber driving the crystallization of Si–Fe2+–Mg-rich clinopyroxenes.

    Description: Our ability to monitor volcanoes (using seismic signals, ground deformation, gas fluxes, or other ground and satellite based observations) as well as our understanding of melt reservoirs that feed eruptions have evolved tremendously in recent years. The complex plumbing systems that are thought to feed eruptions are, however, difficult to relate to the monitoring signals. Here we show that the record preserved in compositional zoning of erupted minerals may be used to reconstruct sections of the plumbing system. Kinetic modeling of such zoning can yield information on the residence time of magma in different segments of the plumbing systems. This allows a more nuanced evaluation of the link between observed monitoring signals or eruption styles and the magmatic processes and movement of batches of melts at depth. The approach is illustrated through a study of the compositional zoning recorded in olivine crystals from the 1991–1993 SE-flank eruption products of Mt. Etna (Sicily). The zoning patterns in crystals reveal that the plumbing system of the volcano consisted of at least three different magmatic environments between which magma was transported and mixed in the year or two preceding the start of eruption. Quantification of this history indicates that two main pathways of melt migration and three timescales dominated the dynamics of the system. Combination of this information with the timing of observation of various monitoring signals allows a reconstruction of the dynamic evolution of this section of the plumbing system during the early stages of the 1991–1993 eruption. It is seen, for example, how the migration of melt through the same sections of the plumbing system can cause pre-eruptive triggering, enhance Strombolian activity, and through the ensuing eruption cleanse and flush the plumbing system. Different kinds of mixing occur simultaneously at different sections of the plumbing system on different timescales (a few days up to two years).

    Description: One of the major objectives of volcanology remains relating variations in surface monitoring signals to the magmatic processes at depth that cause these variations. We present a method that enables compositional and temporal information stored in zoning of minerals (olivine in this case) to be linked to observations of real-time degassing data. The integrated record may reveal details of the dynamics of gradual evolution of a plumbing system during eruption. We illustrate our approach using the 2006 summit eruptive episodes of Mt. Etna. We find that the history tracked by olivine crystals, and hence, most likely the magma pathways within the shallow plumbing system of Mt. Etna, differed considerably between the July and October eruptions. The compositional and temporal record preserved in the olivine zoning patterns reveal two mafic recharge events within months of each other (June and September 2006), and each of these magma supplies may have triggered the initiation of different eruptive cycles (July 14–24 and August 31–December 14). Correlation of these observations with gas monitoring data shows that the systematic rise of the CO2/SO2gas values is associated with the gradual (preand syn-eruptive) supply of batches of gas-rich mafic magma into segments of Etna’s shallow plumbing system, where mixing with pre-existing and more evolved magma occurred.

    Description: Earthquake forecasts are usually underinformed, and can be plagued by uncertainty in terms of the most appropriate model, and parameter values used in that model. In this paper, we explore the application of two different models to the same seismogenic area. The first is a renewal model based on the characteristic earthquake hypothesis that uses historical/palaeoseismic recurrence times, and fixed rupture geometries. The hazard rate is modified by the Coulomb static stress change caused by nearby earthquakes that occurred since the latest characteristic earthquake. The second model is a very simple earthquake simulator based on plate-motion, or fault-slip rates and adoption of a Gutenberg–Richter magnitude–frequency distribution. This information is commonly available even if historical and palaeoseismic recurrence data are lacking. The intention is to develop and assess a simulator that has a very limited parameter set that could be used to calculate earthquake rates in settings that are not as rich with observations of large-earthquake recurrence behaviour as the Nankai trough. We find that the use of convergence rate as a primary constraint allows the simulator to replicate much of the spatial distribution of observed segmented rupture rates along the Nankai, Tonankai and Tokai subduction zones. Although we note rate differences between the two forecast methods in the Tokai zone, we also see enough similarities between simulations and observations to suggest that very simple earthquake rupture simulations based on empirical data and fundamental earthquake laws could be useful forecast tools in information-poor settings.

    Description: Wehave investigated lava flows representative of thewhole eruptive history of the Colli Albani ultrapotassic volcanic district (Central Italy). One of the most intriguing features concerning some of these lava flows is the occurrence of primary, magmatic calcite in the groundmass. The primary, magmatic nature of calcite has been inferred by microtextural investigations showing that it typically occurs i) interstitially, associated with clinopyroxene, nepheline and phlogopite, ii) in spherical ocelli, associated with nepheline, fluorite and tangentially arranged clinopyroxene, and iii) in corona-like reaction zones around K-feldspar xenocrysts. These microtextural features distinctly indicate that calcite crystallized froma carbonate melt in a partially molten groundmass, implying that the temperature of the system was above the solidus of the hosted lava flow (N850 °C). Geochemical features of calcite crystals (i.e., stable isotope values and trace element patterns) corroborate their primary nature and give insights into the origin of the parental carbonate melt. The trace element patterns testify to a high-temperature crystallization process (not hydrothermal) involving a carbonate melt coexisting with a silicate melt. The high δ18O (around 27‰SMOW) andwide δ13C (−18 to+5‰PDB) values measured in the calcites preclude a mantle origin, but are consistent with an origin in the crust. In this framework, the crystallization of calcite can be linked to the interaction between magmas and carbonate-bearing wall rocks and, in particular, to the entrapment of solid and/or molten carbonate in the silicate magma. The stability of carbonate melt at lowpressure and the consequent crystallization of calcite in the lava flow groundmass are ensured by the documented, high activity of fluorine in the studied system and by the limited ability of silicate and carbonate melts to mix at syn-eruptive time scales.

    Description: We present new thermometers and barometers based on clinopyroxene–liquid equilibria specific to alkaline differentiated magmas. The new models were calibrated through the regression analyses of experimental datasets obtained by merging phase equilibria experiments from the literature with new experiments performed by using trachytic and phonolitic starting compositions. The regression strategy was twofold: (1) we have tested previous thermometric and barometric equations and recalibrated these models using the new datasets; (2) we have calibrated a new thermometer and a new barometer including only regression parameters that closely describe the compositional variability of the datasets. The new models yield more precise estimates than previous thermometers and barometers when used to predict temperatures and pressures of alkaline differentiated magmas. We have tested the reliability of the new equations by using clinopyroxene–liquid pairs from trachytes and phonolites erupted during major explosive eruptions at the Phlegrean Fields and Mt. Vesuvius (central Italy). The test yielded crystallization conditions comparable to those determined by means of melt and fluid inclusion analyses and phase equilibria studies; this validates the use of the proposed models for precise estimates of crystallization temperatures and pressures in differentiated alkaline magmas. Because these magmas feed some of the most voluminous, explosive, and threatening volcanic eruptions in the world, a better understanding of the environmental conditions of their reservoirs is mandatory and this is now possible with the new models provided here.

    Description: This study reports the first crystal chemical database resulting from a detailed structural investigation of trioctahedral micas found in xenolithic ejecta produced during the AD 1631, 1872 and 1944 eruptions, three explosive episodes of recent volcanic period of Vesuvius volcano (Southern Italy). Three xenolith types were selected: metamorphic/metasomatic skarns, pyrometamorphic/hydrothermally altered nodules and mafic cumulates. They are related to different magma chemistry and effusive styles: from sub-plinian and most evolved (AD 1631 eruption) to violent strombolian with medium evolution degree (AD 1872 eruption) to vulcanian-effusive, least evolved (AD 1944 eruption) event, respectively. Both xenoliths and micas were investigated employing multiple techniques: the xenoliths were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and quantitative energy-dispersive microanalysis; the micas were studied by electron probe microanalysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The mica-bearing xenoliths showvariable texture and mineralogical assemblage, clearly related to their different origin. Based on the major oxide chemistry, only one xenolithic sample falls in the skarn compositional field fromthe Somma-Vesuvius literature, some fall close to the skarns and cumulate fields, others plot close to the syenite/foidolite/essexite field. A subgroup of the selected ejecta does not fall or approach any of the compositional fields. Trace and rare earth element patterns show some petrological affinity between studied xenoliths and erupted magmas with typical Eu, Ta and Nb negative anomalies. Strongly depleted patterns were detected for the 1631 metamorphic/metasomatic skarns xenoliths. Three distinct mica groups were distinguished: 1) Mg-, Al-rich, low Ti-bearing, low to moderate F-bearing varieties (1631 xenolith), 2) Al-moderate, F- and Mg-rich, Ti-, Fe-poor varieties (1872 xenolith), and 3) Al-, Ti- and Fe-rich, F-poor phases (1944 xenolith). All the analyzed mica crystals are 1Mpolytypes with the expected space group C2/m. Micas from xenoliths of the 1631 Vesuvius eruption are phlogopites characterized by a combination of low extent of oxy-type and variable extent OH−→F− substitutions, as testified by the range of F concentration (from ~0.20 to 0.80 apfu). Micas from xenoliths of the 1872 Vesuvius eruption exhibit structural peculiarities typical of fluorophlogopites, i.e. OH−→F− substitution is predominant. Micas from the xenolith of the 1944 Vesuvius eruption display features typical of oxy-substituted micas. The variability of the crystal chemical features of the studied micas is consistentwith the remarkable variation of their host rocks. Micas from1631 nodules are related to metasomatic, skarn-type environment, deriving from the metamorphosed wall-rocks hosting the magma reservoir. The fluorophlogopites from the 1872 xenoliths testify for strongly dehydrated environmental conditions compared to those of the 1631 and 1944 hosts. Finally, magma storage condition at depth, associated to a decreasing aH2O may have promoted major oxy-type substitutions in 1944 biotites.

    Description: Ash samples from tephra layers correlated with the Pomici di Avellino (Avellino Pumice) eruption of Somma-Vesuvius were collected in distal archives and their composition and particle morphology investigated in order to infer their behaviour of transportation and deposition. Differences in composition and particle morphologies were recognised for ash particles belonging to the magmatic Plinian and final phreatomagmatic phases of the eruption. The ash particles were dispersed in opposite directions during the two different phases of the eruption, and these directions are also different from that of coarse-grained fallout deposits. In particular, ash generated during magmatic phase and injected in the atmosphere to form a sustained column shows a prevailing SE dispersion, while ash particles generated during the final phreatomagmatic phase and carried by pyroclastic density currents show a general NW dispersion. These opposite dispersions indicate an ash dispersal influenced by both high and low atmosphere dynamics. In particular, the magmatic ash dispersal was first driven by stratospheric wind towards NE and then the falling particles encountered a variable wind field during their settling, which produced the observed preferential SE dispersal. The wind field encountered by the rising ash clouds that accompanied the pyroclastic density currents of the final phreatomagmatic phase was different with respect to that encountered by the magmatic ash, and produced a NW dispersal. These data demonstrate how ash transportation and deposition are greatly influenced by both high and low atmosphere dynamics. In particular, fine-grained particles transported in ash clouds of small-scale pyroclastic density currents may be dispersed over distances and cover areas comparable with those injected into the stratosphere by Plinian, sustained columns. This is a point not completely addressed by present day mitigation plans in case of renewal of activity at Somma-Vesuvius, and can yield important information also for other volcanoes potentially characterised by explosive activity.

    Description: We report new petrographic and geochemical data on volcanic rocks erupted over the last 9 Ma ca. within El Tatio volcanic region (Western Cordillera – CVZ). They originated from compound volcanism alternating composite volcano activities, lava domes formation and minor low-mild explosive eruptions, whereas ignimbrite-like deposits outcropping in the region originated from external caldera system (Altiplano Puna Volcanic Complex). The volcanics – mostly erupted in the last 1 Ma - have composition ranging between calcalkaline (CA) to high-K calcalkaline (HKCA) basaltic andesite to rhyolite, but most of them are andesites and dacites. Petrographic features of the studied rocks can be frequently related to strong disequilibrium conditions in the crystallizing system: deeply resorbed and rounded mineral phases, reaction rims, skeletal habits, large ranges of mineral compositions with direct and reverse zoning, oxidations and uralitizations phenomena are observed. Most of these crystal disequilibrium features may be explained by convective self-mixing processes in magma reservoirs cooling from above and characterized by mafic magma batch at the base as a probable heat source, with minor role for magma mixing between compositionally different magmas. On the other hand, the high crystallization degree of the rocks together with evidence provided by geochemical data suggest that FC of recurrent mineral assemblages (plag.±pyrox±hornbl±bt) in closed magma chamber must be considered the most significant differentiation process for several volcanic apparatus forming El Tatio area. Although the FC holds a leading role, the correlation of geochemical and few available isotopic data also point to AFC processes as further important evolutionary mechanism. Isotopic trends and patterns of incompatible elements (i.e LILE enrichment, LILE/HFSE ratios) mirror the interaction of magmas with crustal contaminants occurring both in the mantle wedge (material transported via subduction) and during the ascent/ ponding of the parental magmas along the thick crust beneath the CVZ. In other words, starting from already modified parental magmas, further modification of variable type affected the magmas at higher level. Finally, we suggest that the plumbing systems (high level magma reservoirs) hosting the magmas of El Tatio region were characterized by multistage evolutionary processes consistent both with open- and closed-system regimes.

    Description: Electrical conductivities of polycrystalline garnets ranging in chemical composition from almandine (Fe3Al2Si3O12) to pyrope (Mg3Al2Si3O12) were measured at 10 GPa and 19 GPa at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1700 °C using complex impedance spectroscopy in a multianvil device. Mössbauer spectroscopy of each sample was carried out both before and after the electrical measurements to characterize the oxidation state of Fe in the almandine bearing garnets. Similar to the behavior of other ferromagnesian silicates, the substitution of Fe for Mg along this compositional join dramatically increases electrical conductivity, but this compositional effect is reduced with increasing temperature. Conductivities increase with increasing total Fe content, as the average Fe2+-Fe3+ distance decreases. At 10 GPa, activation energies for conductivity vary smoothly with composition and increase rapidly toward the pyrope end-member composition, where it reaches a value of 2.5 eV. The results are consistent with an electrical conductivity mechanism involving small polaron mobility in the Fe-bearing garnets at 10 GPa. At 19 GPa, however, there is virtually no change in the activation energy as a function of Fe-Mg substitution for the pyrope-rich garnets. These higher pressure measurements reß ect a mechanism involving oxygen related point defects, as conductivities increase with pressure at constant T for each garnet, and the effect of pressure is greater for the more Mg-rich garnets. The data also allow for a more quantitative evaluation of the effect of chemical composition, speciÞ cally Fe-Mg substitution, on the electrical conductivity proÞ le of the mantle, using a recently developed laboratory- derived model. We apply the model using these data to a portion of the transition zone between 520 and 660 km, in which we vary the garnet composition from Py100 to Py85Alm15. Although only a minor effect on bulk mantle conductivity results, we conclude that the overall garnet composition may, however, be important in characterizing the magnitude of any EC discontinuity with respect to the above-lying mantle.
