    Description: On 3rd November 2002, at about 3 km off-shore of Panarea Island (Aeolian Islands, Southern Italy), a series of gas vents suddenly and violently opened from the seafloor at the depth of 10-15 m, with an unusually high gas flux and superimposing on the already existing submarine fumarolic field. Starting from the 12th November 2002 a discontinuous geochemical monitoring program was carried out. The emissions consisted in an emulsion whose liquid phase derived from condensation of an uprising vapor phase occurring close to the fluid outlets without significant contamination by seawater. The whole composition of the fluids was basically H2O- and CO2-dominated, with minor amounts of typical «hydrothermal» components (such as H2S, H2, CO and light hydrocarbons), atmospheric-related compounds, and characterized by the occurrence of a significant magmatic gas fraction (mostly represented by SO2, HCl and HF). According to the observed temporal variability of the fluid compositions, between November and December 2002 the hydrothermal feeding system was controlled by oxidizing conditions due to the input of magmatic gases. The magmatic degassing phenomena showed a transient nature, as testified by the almost complete disappearance of the magmatic markers in a couple of months and by the restoration, since January 2003, of the chemical features of the existing hydrothermal system. The most striking feature of the evolution of the «Panarea degassing event» was the relatively rapid restoration of the typical reducing conditions of a stationary hydrothermal system, in which the FeO/Fe1.5O redox pair of the rock mineral phases has turned to be the dominating redox controlling system.

    Description: The lesson learned from the recent Icelandic Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption is the need to obtain accurate near real time retrievals in order to sample the phenomenon evolution. In particular, because of the harming effects of fine volcanic ash particles on aircrafts, the real time tracking of volcanic clouds is a key issue for aviation safety. The current mostly utilized procedure for the ash retrievals is based on the Brightness Temperature Difference (BTD) algorithm, using the 11 and 12 micron channels measurements and radiative transfer model computation. This latter requires many input parameters and is time consuming, preventing the utilization during the crisis phases. In this work a fast and accurate Neural Network (NN) approach has been developed to detect and retrieve volcanic ash cloud properties using multispectral IR measurements. The exploited data come from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired over Mt. Etna volcano during the 2001, 2002 and 2006 eruptive events. The procedure consists in two separate steps that uses the three MODIS channels 28, 31 and 32: the detection and the ash retrievals. The detection is reduced to a classification problem. In this context several classes can be individuated, such as free sea surface, meteorological clouds, and ash plume. To maintain the solution of the problem as easy as possible we have simplified the scenario identifying only two classes on the MODIS images: 'ash' and 'no ash' pixels. This approach is coherent with the philosophy of this work in which the time passed to obtain the result is a stringent factor. For the ash mass retrieval, the trained network replicates the model. In fact, in order to have a network able to learn a behavior and to represent it through a functional approximation, it is necessary to provide appropriate information by an ensemble of examples. These latter can be obtained from a model if a direct measure is not available. In this work the results obtained with the BTD procedure have been considered. The results obtained from the entire procedure are encouraging, indeed the confusion matrix for the test set has an accuracy greater than 90%. Moreover the ash mass retrieval shows a good agreement with that achieved by BTD procedure.

    Description: One of the major objectives of volcanology remains relating variations in surface monitoring signals to the magmatic processes at depth that cause these variations. We present a method that enables compositional and temporal information stored in zoning of minerals (olivine in this case) to be linked to observations of real-time degassing data. The integrated record may reveal details of the dynamics of gradual evolution of a plumbing system during eruption. We illustrate our approach using the 2006 summit eruptive episodes of Mt. Etna. We find that the history tracked by olivine crystals, and hence, most likely the magma pathways within the shallow plumbing system of Mt. Etna, differed considerably between the July and October eruptions. The compositional and temporal record preserved in the olivine zoning patterns reveal two mafic recharge events within months of each other (June and September 2006), and each of these magma supplies may have triggered the initiation of different eruptive cycles (July 14–24 and August 31–December 14). Correlation of these observations with gas monitoring data shows that the systematic rise of the CO2/SO2gas values is associated with the gradual (preand syn-eruptive) supply of batches of gas-rich mafic magma into segments of Etna’s shallow plumbing system, where mixing with pre-existing and more evolved magma occurred.

    Description: The simultaneous quantitative determination of two-dimensional bromine monoxide (BrO) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) distributions in volcanic gas plumes is described. Measurements at the fumarolic field on the island Vulcano (autumn 2004) and in the plume of Mt. Etna volcano (spring 2005) were carried out with an Imaging DOAS instrument. The SO2 fluxes of several fumaroles were estimated from two-dimensional distributions of SO2. Additionally, the first two-dimensional distributions of BrO within a volcanic plume were successfully retrieved. Slant column densities of up to 2.6×1014 molecules per square centimetre were detected in the plume of Mt. Etna. The investigation of the BrO/SO2 ratio, calculated from the two-dimensional distributions of SO2 and BrO, shows an increase from the centre to the edge of the volcanic plume. These results have significance for the involvement of ozone during BrO formation processes in volcanic emissions.

    Description: Bromine monoxide (BrO) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) abundances as a function of the distance from the source were measured by ground-based scattered-light Multi AXis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) in the volcanic plumes of Mt. Etna on Sicily, Italy in August-October 2004 and May 2005 and Villarica in Chile in November 2004. BrO and SO2 spatial distributions in a cross section of Mt. Etna’s plume were also determined by Imaging DOAS. We observed an increase in the BrO/SO2 ratio in the plume from below the detection limit near the vent to about 4.5 x 10-4 at 19 km (Mt. Etna) and to about 1.3 x 10-4 at 3 km (Villarica) distance, respectively. Additional attempts were undertaken to evaluate the compositions of individual vents on Mt. Etna. Furthermore, we detected the halogen species ClO and OClO. This is the first time that OClO could be detected in a volcanic plume. Using calculated thermodynamic equilibrium compositions as input data for a one–dimensional photochemical model, we could reproduce the observed BrO and SO2 vertical columns in the plume and their ratio as function of distance from the volcano as well as vertical BrO and SO2 profiles across the plume with current knowledge of multiphase halogen chemistry, but only when we assumed the existence of an ”effective source region”, where volcanic volatiles and ambient air are mixed at about 600°C (in the proportions of 60% and 40%, respectively)

    Description: In situ measurements have been the basis for monitoring volcanic gas emissions for many years and—being complemented by remote sensing techniques—still play an important role to date. Concerning in situ techniques for sampling a dilute plume, an increase in accuracy and a reduction of detection limits are still necessary for most gases (e.g., CO2, SO2, HCl, HF, HBr, HI). In this work, the Raschig-Tube technique (RT) is modified and utilized for application on volcanic plumes. The theoretical and experimental absorption properties of the RT and the Drechsel bottle (DB) setups are characterized and both are applied simultaneously to the well-established Filter packs technique (FP) in the field (on Stromboli Island and Mount Etna). The comparison points out that FPs are the most practical to apply but the results are errorprone compared to RT and DB, whereas the RT results in up to 13 times higher analyte concentrations than the DB in the same sampling time. An optimization of the analytical procedure, including sample pretreatment and analysis by titration, Ion Chromatography, and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, led to a comprehensive data set covering a wide range of compounds. In particular, less abundant species were quantified more accurately and iodine was detected for the first time in Stromboli’s plume. Simultaneously applying Multiaxis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) the chemical transformation of emitted bromide into bromine monoxide (BrO) from Stromboli and Etna was determined to 3–6% and 7%, respectively, within less than 5 min after the gas release from the active vents.

    Description: The distribution of clasts deposited around a volcano during an explosive eruption typically contoured by isopleth maps provides important insights into the associated plume height, wind speed and eruptive style. Nonetheless, a wide range of strategies exists to determine the largest clasts, which can lead to very different results with obvious implications for the characterization of eruptive behaviour of active volcanoes. The IAVCEI Commission on Tephra Hazard Modelling has carried out a dedicated exercise to assess the influence of various strategies on the determination of the largest clasts. Suggestions on the selection of sampling area, collection strategy, choice of clast typologies and clast characterization (i.e. axis measurement and averaging technique) are given, mostly based on a thorough investigation of two outcrops of a Plinian tephra deposit from Cotopaxi volcano (Ecuador) located at different distances from the vent. These include: (1) sampling on a flat paleotopography far from significant slopes to minimize remobilization effects; (2) sampling on specified-horizontal-area sections (with the statistically representative sampling area depending on the outcrop grain size and lithic content); (3) clast characterization based on the geometric mean of its three orthogonal axes with the approximation of the minimum ellipsoid (lithic fragments are better than pumice clasts when present); and (4) use of the method of the 50th percentile of a sample of 20 clasts as the best way to assess the largest clasts. It is also suggested that all data collected for the construction of isopleth maps be made available to the community through the use of a standardized data collection template, to assess the applicability of the new proposed strategy on a large number of deposits and to build a large dataset for the future development and refinement of dispersal models.

    Description: Two paroxysmal explosions occurred at Stromboli volcano (Italy) on 8 and 24 November 2009. Analysis of recordings (from video-camera surveillance) indicates that each paroxysm consisted of multiple bursts from different vents. Field surveys, carried out within a few days after the two paroxysmal events, allowed us to gather crucial data on eruptive deposits and document morphological variations occurring at the source vents. Integration of video-analysis and field observations allowed making inferences on the eruptive dynamics of each explosive paroxysm. The 24 November event, in particular, erupted a larger volume and coarser products dispersed further from the summit area, resulting in a more hazardous event compared to the 8 November event that was largely confined to the upper part of the volcano.

    Description: I bacini intramontani dell’Appennino centro-meridionale sono soggetti, sin dalla loro genesi (Pleistocene inferiore), a deformazioni del suolo, la cui non uniforme distribuzione e la cui diversa entità sono una risposta all’attività di faglie, intersecanti e bordanti le pianure, e al costipamento differenziale dei depositi costituenti le successioni sedimentarie di riempimento. Al fine di valutare la distribuzione spaziale dei movimenti verticali e le relative velocità, e di interpretarne correttamente le cause, è stato affrontato uno studio multidisciplinare che ha previsto l’elaborazione di dati radar con tecnica PSInSAR, lo studio geomorfologico e strutturale e l’analisi stratigrafica di dati di sottosuolo della piana di Venafro, ampia depressione tettonica interposta tra i M. delle Mainarde-M. di Venafro ed i M. del Matese e drenata dal F. Volturno. L’interpolazione dei dati PS, effettuata in ambiente GIS, riferita a due intervalli di tempo, 1995–2000 (ERS) e 2003–2008 (ENVISAT) ha permesso di valutare i ‘cumulative vertical displacements’ (mm), i ‘displacement rates’ (mm/a) e il ‘gradient field’ dei ‘displacement rates’, consentendo di individuare alcuni settori del bacino che si distinguono per tassi di subsidenza superiori alla media e per comportamento deformativo costante nel tempo. Risulta evidente una correlazione tra la distribuzione spaziale del quadro deformativo di natura interferometrica, lo sviluppo geometrico delle faglie che interessano la piana e la natura litologica del riempimento sedimentario. I valori maggiori di subsidenza si registrano nel settore centrale della piana, probabilmente indotti da un maggiore spessore dei depositi di riempimento, nonché dalla presenza di depositi argillo-sabbiosi poco addensati e più suscettibili al costipamento, così come dalla presenza di alcuni lineamenti tettonici orientati NE-SW e NW-SE. In particolare, i valori maggiori si registrano a valle di una scarpata morfologica, orientata NW-SE, coincidente anche con un importante ‘knick point’ del F. Volturno, oltre che a valle di una faglia, orientata NW-SE (Faglia dell’’Aquae Juliae’), attiva in tempi storici per aver dislocato l’acquedotto romano.

    Description: The Corinthian Gulf in Greece, is the most active of a series of extending grabens which accomodate the deformation in the highly seismic Aegean region. The geodetic network established in the region has about 200 points: 50 1st order points and ~150 2nd order points. The network covers an area of about 100 x 80 km2, which correspond to an average density of 1 point every 5 km2. This dense network allows to study the main active faults in the region. Eleven field surveys were organized in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, June 1995, October 1995, 1997, and 2001. Two earthquakes occurred in the vicinity during the ten years period: the 1992, 18 November Ms=5.9 Galaxidi earthquake and the 1995, 15 June 1995 Ms=6.2 Aigion one. With respect to the stable Europe, we find for Peloponnessos an average displacement rate of 30 mm/yr in the N215° direction, similar to that found in previous studies. Our results show that most of the deformation in the Corinthian Gulf is localizes off-shore, in a narrow band, in the central part of the Gulf. The extension rate measured over 10 years is 11 mm/yr in the N185° direction in the middle of the Gulf (Xiloxastro) and 16 mm/yr in the N185° direction in its western part (Aigion). The southern block appears un-deformed, except the region of Aigion event. Using CNES DIAPASON software, we derived 85 interferograms of the Corinthian Gulf from 38 raw ERS SAR images acquired between 1992 and 1999. The interferograms sampling the 1995 earthquake show a clear coseismic signal reaching 250 +/- 15 mm at Psaromita cape, a value consistent with the GPS measurements. No post-seismic motion, within the error bars of SAR interferometry (+/- 15 mm), is observed during the 1995-1999 period.
