Beschreibung: Results which were achieved by a seven-wavelength pyrometer last year are reported in this paper. These studies are directed toward the development of a method for determining the real surface temperature of thermal protection materials and for evaluating its emittance under varieties of reentry environment. A description of the data processing method and apparatus is also included.

Beschreibung: Characteristics of the boat inductor for keeping liquid metal in the suspended state are examined. Behavioral features of the liquid metal, and the suspension boundary of liquid metal in the lower position are discussed. It is concluded that the inductor can be used to crystallize metals in the suspended state.

Beschreibung: A system was developed for the calibration and development of thermal ion instrumentation. The system provides an extended beam with usable current rates, approx. 1 pA/sq cm, at beam energies as low as 1 eV, with much higher values available with increasing energy. A tandem electrostatic and variable geometry magnetic mirror configuration within the ion source optimizes the use of the ionizing electrons. The system is integrated under microcomputer control to allow automatic control and monitoring of the beam energy and composition and the mass and angle-dependent response of the instrument under test. The system is pumped by a combination of carbon vane and cryogenic sorption roughing pumps and ion and liquid helium operating pumps.

Beschreibung: Observations were made of the N2 first negative and Meinel emission bands with the Imaging Spectrometric Observatory (ISO) on Spacelab 1. These observations have revealed the presence of N2 emissions which exceed those expected on the basis of current ionospheric models by up to a factor of 10. If the emission is of terrestrial origin, large unidentified ionospheric sources of N2 ions must exist. On the other hand, if the source is local to the shuttle environment, a mechanism must be found which is capable of generating emissions of such unexpectedly large intensity. Charge exchange of ambient ionospheric O+ ions with shuttle environmental N2, followed by resonance scattering of sunlight, as a candidate were suggested. However, this model implies that a cloud of N2 gases must surround the vehicle in concentrations in excess of 10 to the 11 c.c. cm with a scale length of tens of meters. In addition, the N2 residence time must be of the order of 10 sec.

Beschreibung: A detailed investigation using electron microscopy was conducted which examined the conditions of materials used in the construction of stable, high performance microbore liquid chromatography (LC) columns. Small details proved to be important. The effects of temperature on the elution of several homologous series used as probe compounds was examined in reverse phase systems. They showed that accessible temperature changes provide roughly half the increase in solvent strength that would be obtained going from a 100% aqueous to a 100% organic mobile phase, which is sufficient to warrant their use in many analyses requiring the use of gradients. Air circulation temperature control systems provide the easiest means of obtaining rapid, wide range changes in column temperature. However, slow heat transfer from the gas leads to thermal nonuniformity in the column and a decrease in resolution as the temperature program progresses.

Beschreibung: The principal motivating factor for convening the Workshop on the Development and Application of Wind Tunnel Seeding Systems for Laser Velocimeters is the necessity to achieve efficient operation and, most importantly, to insure accurate measurements with velocimeter techniques. The ultimate accuracy of particle scattering based laser velocimeter measurements of wind tunnel flow fields depends on the ability of the scattering particle to faithfully track the local flow field in which it is embedded. A complex relationship exists between the particle motion and the local flow field. This relationship is dependent on particle size, size distribution, shape, and density. To quantify the accuracy of the velocimeter measurements of the flow field, the researcher has to know the scattering particle characteristics. In order to obtain optimum velocimeter measurements, the researcher is striving to achieve control of the particle characteristics and to verify those characteristics at the measurement point. Additionally, the researcher is attempting to achieve maximum measurement efficiency through control of particle concentration and location in the flow field.

Beschreibung: Attention is given to two classes of SAR imaging inversion problems: fine resolution imagery of stationary scenes, and the imaging of a moving surface. Absolute scattering coefficient values are obtained from the output image by means of reference reflectors. The inversion of SAR data obtained from a moving surface requires consideration of motion effects in addition to those for the fixed scatterer; systematic displacements on a scale greater than the resolution result in azimuth shifts in the mapping of the scene onto the SAR image.

Beschreibung: Digital Image Processing has been integrated into a new technique for measurements of fuel spray characteristics. The advantages of this technique are: a wide dynamic range of droplet sizes, accounting for nonspherical droplet shapes not possible with other spray assessment techniques. Finally, the technique has been applied to the study of turbojet engine fuel nozzle atomization performance with Jet A and antimisting fuel.

Beschreibung: The use of the resonant Doppler velocimeter for flow visualization in a free supersonic nitrogen jet is demonstrated experimentally. In the experiment reported here, room-temperature nitrogen at 12.7 psi expands through a Mach 3.4 converging diverging nozzle into a plenum chamber; small amount of sodium is injected through a heated needle centered 0.5-in. upstream of the nozzle throat. The beam of a single frequency dye laser is expanded into a sheet of light with a cylindrical beam expander and directed counter to the jet to spatially resolve any slice across the core of the flow. By tuning the laser to different frequencies, particular velocity and density fields can be highlighted.
