Description: The User's manual for the NASA Structural Analysis (NASTRAN) program is presented. The manual contains all information needed to solve problems with NASTRAN. The volume is instructional and encyclopedic. The manual includes instruction in structural modeling techniques, instruction in input preparation, and information to assist the interpretation of the output. Descriptions of all input data cards, restart procedures, and diagnostic messages are developed.

Description: An analysis of structural failures that have occurred in NASA programs was conducted. Reports of 231 examples of structural failure were reviewed. Attempts were made to identify those factors which contributed to the failures, and recommendations were formulated for actions which would minimize their effects on future NASA programs. Two classes of factors were identified: (1) those associated with deficiencies in existing materials and structures technology and (2) those attributable to inadequate documentation or communication of that technology.

Description: Composite engineering materials have two distinct parts, including the load-bearing filaments and the matrix. Fibers can range from glass to boron and graphite. Matrix constituents include epoxies for lower temperatures and metals for higher temperatures. Composites appear as tape or combined with metal in structural shapes. The increased use of composites will reduce over-all per pound manufacturing costs. Two major deterrents to further application of composites in advanced commercial transports include a shortage of cost-effective structural design concepts and a lack of confidence in the life characteristics. A program has been outlined by NASA that will, if implemented, provide considerable in-service life experience with structural components on commercial transports.

Description: Derivation of a general closed-form solution for the calculation of local stresses in cylindrical axial load-carrying pressure vessels which are heavily stiffened in the axial direction and circumferentially restrained by closely spaced ring stiffeners. The ring stiffeners are treated as discrete stiffeners and are allowed to have a temperature variation throughout the radial extension of the stiffener and different material properties compared with those of the vessel.

Description: An analytical investigation of sinusoidally forced vibration of laminated, anisotropic plates including bending-stretching coupling, thickness-shear flexibility, all three types of inertia effects, and material damping is presented. In the analysis the effects of thickness-shear deformation are considered by the use of a shear correction factor K, analogous to that used by Mindlin for homogeneous plates. Two entirely different approaches for calculating the thickness-shear factor for a laminate are presented. Numerical examples indicate that the value of K depends on the layer properties and the stacking sequence of the laminate.

Description: Several methods are presented for developing proportional substructure damping matrices from modal test data. Examples demonstrate the significance of the nonuniqueness of the resulting proportional damping matrices. Several alternate modal synthesis procedures are presented for the systematic calculation of system modal damping from substructure damping information. The relative merits of these procedures are discussed, and one procedure is recommended.

Description: The solutions developed in this paper are based on the finite Hankel-Fourier-Laplace transform. The Love-Timoshenko shell equations are reduced through the application of the Fourier-Laplace transforms to the axial space and time variables. The equation of motion for the acoustic fluid contained within the shell are reduced through the application of the finite Hankel-Fourier-Laplace transform to the radial, axial spatial, and time variables. The boundary conditions at the fixed end of the semi-infinite shell are met through the application of loadings symmetric with respect to the origin and the application of a ring loading at the origin which is chosen so as to make the radial deflection there zero. Expressions are found for the transforms of the axial, tangential, and radial shell displacements, the axial, tangential, and radial fluid velocities, and the radiated fluid pressure. Numerical inversion of the Fourier-Laplace transform is accomplished in terms of a series of ultraspherical polynomials and Gauss-Hermite or Gauss-Laguerre quadrature.

Description: A simple stress intensity factor expression is given for a deep edge crack in a plate in tension. The shapes of cracks opened by tension or bending are approximated by conic sections, and the conic section coefficients are related to plate geometry by very simple empirical equations. The magnitude of the crack displacement is a function of applied load, plate geometry, and the elastic constants of the plate material. The shape of a loaded crack in a semiinfinite plate is, approximately, a portion of an ellipse whose semimajor axis is about three times the crack length. As the crack length (relative to the plate width) increases, the crack shape becomes parabolic, then hyperbolic, the acuity of the hyperbola increasing with the relative crack length.

Description: A special plasticity theory for soils in a triaxial compression drained condition which was extracted from a general theory of soil plasticity presented by Aguirre-Ramirez is generalized for three-dimensional complex stress fields. A theory for plane-strain is then constructed from the generalized three-dimensional theory. Both theories are then compared and found to be in agreement with the corresponding theories presented by Roscoe and Burland at Cambridge.
