    Description: The life span of a severe storm is on the order of a few hours. Rapid-scan infrared and visible observations from geosynchronous satellites can be useful for studying the life cycle of a severe convective storm. By using artificial colors for pixels representing blackbody temperatures of the cloud top, convective storms can be observed throughout their life cycles. In this paper clouds associated with a tornadic storm, the Ringwood, OK tornado on May 29, 1977, are compared with those without a tornadic storm to illustrate how the infrared and visible observations from a geosynchronous satellite can be used to study the differences in their life cycles. The instability of the air mass and the meteorological background are discussed based on balloon observations.

    Description: The rationale and program design for the NASA Global Tropospheric Experiment (GTE) are described. The GTE is intended to characterize the global tropospheric chemistry and its interaction with the stratosphere, the land, and the ocean. The program emphasis is laid on the potential global impact of human activities, particularly those which release CH4, N2O, and chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere. Specific tasks defined thus far include characterizing the tropospheric gas-phase chemistry of OH, NO, and NO2, determining concentrations and distributions of CO, CH4, O3, and N2O, as well as halogens, trace metals, and reduced sulfur species. Techniques are needed for measuring the chemical fluxes between earth surface sources and sinks, the boundary layer, the free troposphere, and the stratosphere. The first phase of the GTE will be to test and develop techniques and assay the detection limits for OH, NO, and NO2 and assess the reliability of laboratory calibrations. Improvements in modelling global-scale tropospheric processes will also be pursued.

    Description: The present and future use of satellites to locate offshore platforms and relay data from in situ sensors to shore was examined. A system of the ARGOS type will satisfy the increasing demand for oceanographic information through data relay and platform location. The improved ship navigation provided by the Global Positioning System (GPS) will allow direct observation of currents from underway ships. Ocean systems are described and demand estimates on satellite systems are determined. The capabilities of the ARGOS system is assessed, including anticipated demand in the next decade.

    Description: The first project of the World Climate Research Program is the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project, (ISCCP) whose objective is the collection and analysis of satellite radiance data in order to infer the global distribution of cloud radiative properties and improve the modeling of cloud effects on climate. The operational component of ISCCP takes advantage of the global coverage provided by the current and planned international array of geostationary and polar-orbiting meteorological satellites in the 1980s. It will produce a five-year global radiance and cloud data set. The research component of ISCCP will coordinate studies to validate climatology, improve cloud analysis algorithms, improve cloud effects modelling, and investigate the role of clouds in the atmospheric radiation budget and hydrologic cycle.

    Description: Changes in solar shape and diameter were detected as a possible probe of variability in solar luminosity, an important climatic driving function.     Description: The aim of the Joint Airport Weather Studies (JAWS) project, to determine quantitatively how well various low-level wind shear detection and warning systems operate in a uniform wind shear environment, is discussed. A number of low-level wind shear detection and warning systems that were used in the JAWS field project in the summer of 1982 are briefly described. These included three types of surface in situ sensors, three airborne sensors, and two Doppler radar remote sensing concepts. The tasks that are pertinent to an evaluation of the systems are stated, and some tentative impressions regarding the capabilities of the systems are presented.

    Description: Calculation of collection efficiencies of two-dimensional airfoils for a monodispersed droplet icing cloud and a multidispersed droplet is carried out. Comparison is made with the experimental results reported in the NACA Technical Note series. The results of the study show considerably improved agreement with experiment when multidroplet size distributions are employed. The study then investigates the effect of collection efficiency on airborne particle droplet size sampling instruments. The biased effect introduced due to sampling from different collection volumes is predicted.

    Description: Results of studies of wind shear hazard to aircraft operation are summarized. Existing wind shear profiles currently used in computer and flight simulator studies are reviewed. The governing equations of motion for an aircraft are derived incorporating the variable wind effects. Quantitative discussions of the effects of wind shear on aircraft performance are presented. These are followed by a review of mathematical solutions to both the linear and nonlinear forms of the governing equations. Solutions with and without control laws are presented. The application of detailed analysis to develop warning and detection systems based on Doppler radar measuring wind speed along the flight path is given. A number of flight path deterioration parameters are defined and evaluated. Comparison of computer-predicted flight paths with those measured in a manned flight simulator is made. Some proposed airborne and ground-based wind shear hazard warning and detection systems are reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of both types of systems are discussed.
