    Description: Rosa Luxemburg was one of the most important intellectuals of the »long« 19th century, and her work in politics and within the European labor movement was extremely manifold. She understood socialism – especially to the displeasure of the Bolsheviks – as a unity of political and social freedoms. For this reason, she remains a figure of identification to this day, and her writings have an unbroken relevance. Luxemburg’s multifaceted life spanned from the birth of the German Empire to shortly after its end (1871–1919) and will be honored in a two-volume edition in the anniversary year 2021. Volume 1 provides an overview of her biography and takes stock of her political activities.

Luxemburgs vielgestaltiges Leben reichte von der Entstehung des Deutschen Kaiserreiches bis kurz nach dessen Ende (1871–1919) und wird im Jubiläumsjahr 2021 mit einer zweibändigen Ausgabe gewürdigt. Band 1 vermittelt einen Überblick über Biografisches und liefert eine Bestandsaufnahme ihres politischen Wirkens.

    Description: The Russian Revolution of 1917, which in reality consisted of several uprisings, forms the caesura between the »long« 19th and the »short« 20th century and ushered in the so-called »Age of Extremes« (Eric Hobsbawm). Many who had believed in the success of the revolution were bitterly disappointed by the actual developments. Once again, a revolution had not been able to achieve what many had expected, even longed for. The revolutionary uprising of February 1917 ended with its corruption in October of the same year. On the basis of an analytical comparative model, Frank Jacob addresses the question of the process of this corruption and shows whether it was due to an inevitable development of events or rather to the will to power of a few.
    Description: Die Russische Revolution von 1917, die in Wirklichkeit aus mehreren Erhebungen bestand, bildet die Zäsur zwischen »langem« 19. und »kurzem« 20. Jahrhundert und leitete das sogenannte »Zeitalter der Extreme« (Eric Hobsbawm) ein. Viele, die an den Erfolg der Revolution geglaubt hatten, wurden von den tatsächlichen Entwicklungen bitter enttäuscht. Wieder einmal war eine Revolution nicht dazu in der Lage gewesen, das zu erreichen, was von vielen erwartet, ja herbeigesehnt wurde. Die revolutionäre Erhebung des Februar 1917 endete mit ihrer Korrumpierung im Oktober desselben Jahres. Frank Jacob widmet sich auf Basis eines analytischen Vergleichsmodells der Frage nach dem Prozess dieser Korrumpierung und zeigt, ob diese einer zwangsläufigen Entwicklung der Ereignisse oder vielmehr dem Machtwillen einiger weniger geschuldet war.

    Description: Without Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, our image of Rosa Luxemburg would be completely different today. In the 1920s, the couple worked together on the estate of the murdered politician, which made it possible to produce the first edition of her works. Later, when Frölich and Wolfstein had fled from the National Socialists into exile in France, one of the earliest and at the same time most authentic biographies of Luxemburg (Rosa Luxemburg: Gedanke und Tat) was written by both of them in 1939 under Frölich's name, which was fed by this rich store of knowledge. But who were Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, who seem almost forgotten today? Their own political careers each started in the SPD before World War I, led them through the anti-war camp to the founding congress of the KPD (Communist Party). While Frölich was elected to the Reichstag, Wolfstein sat in the Prussian Landtag. Out of anti-Stalinist conviction, they left the KPD and eventually became co-founders of the SAP (Socialist Workers' Party), which they headed before fleeing. But they returned to Germany... Riccardo Altieri illustrates in a very readable way the result of his research of several years into a double biography from the point of view of network history. Only by consulting international sources from Wolfstein's and Frölich's network could the study come into being at all, since the protagonists had not left a closed estate due to the persecution during the Nazi era.

Nevertheless, they symbolize, as it were, a fear of human degeneration. The particular human-animal relationship is the subject of this cultural history. Frank Jacob explains what role apes played for the self-perception of humans and how they were and are understood as humanoid animals, for example as objects in research and popular media.     Description: In the digital age, we often encounter analog photographs as things that – after having been stored away, lost, or even thrown away – are (re)found. The fascination with such found photographs is reflected in a striking way in contemporary essay and documentary film. Found photo films are an essayistic documentary form that has emerged since the turn of the millennium: Films that work with left-behind, rescued, or found convolutions of photographic images, collecting, selecting, and placing them in a new context. They stand in a field of tension between popular aestheticization and re-auratization of analog media in the course of digitalization as well as a long tradition of cinematically reflecting the materiality and mediality of film by working with photography and found footage. Charlotte Praetorius explores such appropriations of analog photographs through a corpus of international films: How do filmmakers relate to photographic found footage? How do the narratives and the narrativity of photography and history intertwine? How is the photographic material arranged and staged? And how can the relationships between different media and materials be grasped? In doing so, Praetorius is also concerned with taking the forms of documentary and essayistic film seriously as a medium for reflecting on (media) history and at the same time also critically questioning them.

    Description: In recent years, new forms of public self-documentation have become popular on social media platforms and especially through so-called influencers, forming their own media cultural microcosm. Even though YouTube has become emblematic of this cultural technique, media self-documentations are also formative for other services such as Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat. Robert Dörre understands the emergence of these self-designs as an aesthetic practice and traces the media-historical shifts that public self-documentation has experienced on the Internet. In order to make these specific aesthetics, rituals, motifs, and economies accessible to media cultural studies, the work approaches the phenomenon from five perspectives: The reception as authentic self, the self as part of social media, the self as brand, the serial self, and the self as amateur and artist.

The dispute in the »Metal on Metal« (German: »Metall auf Metall«) case between the music group Kraftwerk and the composer Moses Pelham even occupied the European Court of Justice in 2019. It shows that copyright has become a socially contentious issue that has pushed its way out of the niche of the artistic sphere and into the everyday lives of almost everyone. This process has not gone unnoticed by academia, and yet academia is only just beginning to understand the implications and effects of this copyright expansion in more detail. Sociologist Georg Fischer provides the first empirical study of sampling in music that explicitly examines the impact of German copyright law on creative practice. He shows the abundance and diversity of creative circumvention strategies that have spread and taken root in the shadow of copyright law – and with which artists necessarily limit their own visibility as well as the aesthetic complexity and monetary exploitation of their works.
