    Description: Rosa Luxemburg was one of the most important intellectuals of the »long« 19th century, and her work in politics and within the European labor movement was extremely manifold. She understood socialism – especially to the displeasure of the Bolsheviks – as a unity of political and social freedoms. For this reason, she remains a figure of identification to this day, and her writings have an unbroken relevance. Luxemburg’s multifaceted life spanned from the birth of the German Empire to shortly after its end (1871–1919) and will be honored in a two-volume edition in the anniversary year 2021. Volume 1 provides an overview of her biography and takes stock of her political activities.

Jahrhunderts und ihr Wirken in der Politik sowie innerhalb der europäischen Arbeiterbewegung äußerst facettenreich. Sozialismus verstand sie – zum Unmut der deutschen Kaisertreuen ebenso wie der russischen Bolschewiki – als Einheit von politischen und sozialen Freiheiten. Bis heute ist sie deshalb eine Identifikationsfigur, ihre Schriften besitzen eine ungebrochene Aktualität. Luxemburgs vielgestaltiges Leben reichte von der Entstehung des Deutschen Kaiserreiches bis kurz nach dessen Ende (1871–1919) und wird im Jubiläumsjahr 2021 mit einer zweibändigen Ausgabe gewürdigt. Band 1 vermittelt einen Überblick über Biografisches und liefert eine Bestandsaufnahme ihres politischen Wirkens.

    Description: The Russian Revolution of 1917, which in reality consisted of several uprisings, forms the caesura between the »long« 19th and the »short« 20th century and ushered in the so-called »Age of Extremes« (Eric Hobsbawm). Many who had believed in the success of the revolution were bitterly disappointed by the actual developments. Once again, a revolution had not been able to achieve what many had expected, even longed for. The revolutionary uprising of February 1917 ended with its corruption in October of the same year. On the basis of an analytical comparative model, Frank Jacob addresses the question of the process of this corruption and shows whether it was due to an inevitable development of events or rather to the will to power of a few.
    Description: Die Russische Revolution von 1917, die in Wirklichkeit aus mehreren Erhebungen bestand, bildet die Zäsur zwischen »langem« 19. und »kurzem« 20. Jahrhundert und leitete das sogenannte »Zeitalter der Extreme« (Eric Hobsbawm) ein. Viele, die an den Erfolg der Revolution geglaubt hatten, wurden von den tatsächlichen Entwicklungen bitter enttäuscht. Wieder einmal war eine Revolution nicht dazu in der Lage gewesen, das zu erreichen, was von vielen erwartet, ja herbeigesehnt wurde. Die revolutionäre Erhebung des Februar 1917 endete mit ihrer Korrumpierung im Oktober desselben Jahres. Frank Jacob widmet sich auf Basis eines analytischen Vergleichsmodells der Frage nach dem Prozess dieser Korrumpierung und zeigt, ob diese einer zwangsläufigen Entwicklung der Ereignisse oder vielmehr dem Machtwillen einiger weniger geschuldet war.

    Description: Without Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, our image of Rosa Luxemburg would be completely different today. In the 1920s, the couple worked together on the estate of the murdered politician, which made it possible to produce the first edition of her works. Later, when Frölich and Wolfstein had fled from the National Socialists into exile in France, one of the earliest and at the same time most authentic biographies of Luxemburg (Rosa Luxemburg: Gedanke und Tat) was written by both of them in 1939 under Frölich's name, which was fed by this rich store of knowledge. But who were Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, who seem almost forgotten today? Their own political careers each started in the SPD before World War I, led them through the anti-war camp to the founding congress of the KPD (Communist Party). While Frölich was elected to the Reichstag, Wolfstein sat in the Prussian Landtag. Out of anti-Stalinist conviction, they left the KPD and eventually became co-founders of the SAP (Socialist Workers' Party), which they headed before fleeing. But they returned to Germany... Riccardo Altieri illustrates in a very readable way the result of his research of several years into a double biography from the point of view of network history. Only by consulting international sources from Wolfstein's and Frölich's network could the study come into being at all, since the protagonists had not left a closed estate due to the persecution during the Nazi era.

    Description: The record books of the Order of Golden Fleece are the main source for the history of this important order of knighthood, which has been existing from the 15th century up to the present time. The here presented 4th record book covers the activities of the Order between 1477 and 1480 with the magnificent assembly in Bruges in spring 1478 as its climax: The Habsburgs Maximilian I as new Duke of Burgundy was installed as the new sovereign of the Order, symbolizing the beginning of a new era in the crisis-shaken Duchy of Burgundy. The volume contains the edition of the complete text (in 15th century French) with detailed commentary (in German) and a calendar of short abstracts of the letters issued by the Order or addressed to it. The edition of the record book with their exact details concerning the location of the meetings, participants, agenda, resolutions, elections and ceremonies present a hitherto unstudied source of the history of Order. The book also offers an interesting view of the critical period within the history of the Duchy Burgundy, in that because it also deals with questions of identity, social control as well as of loyalty and felony.
    Description: Das 4. Protokollbuch des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies berichtet in französischer Sprache über die Aktivitäten des Ordens zwischen 1477 und 1480. Höhepunkt dabei ist das prachtvolle Fest in Brügge im Frühjahr 1478: Hier wurde der neue Herzog von Burgund, der Habsburger Maximilian I., zum neuen Souverän eingesetzt, womit der Beginn einer neuen Ära im krisengeschüttelten Burgund symbolisiert werden sollte. Mit den präzisen Angaben über Ort der Versammlungen, Teilnehmer, Tagesordnungspunkte, Beschlüsse, Neuwahlen und Zeremonien bietet die Edition der Protokolle nicht nur eine bisher unbeachtete Quelle zur Ordensgeschichte, sondern eröffnet auch einen interessanten Blick auf die kritische Zeit Burgunds, denn sie berichten auch von Identität, Sozialkontrolle sowie von Treue und Verrat.

Erstmals wird hier ein Überblick über die im Staatsarchiv der Russischen Föderation in Moskau vorhandene Offene Serie der Befehle der Sowjetischen Militäradministration des Landes Brandenburg – SMAB – gegeben. Einleitend erfolgen quellenkritische und institutionsgeschichtliche Untersuchungen zur Thematik. Den Hauptteil bildet das Inventar der von der Verwaltung der SMAB zwischen 1945 und 1949 erlassenen Offenen Befehle. Auf Interesse dürfte ebenfalls die Übersicht über die von der SMAB erlassenen «Anweisungen» stoßen.

    Description: Dieses Buch ist ein Versuch des Entgegenkommens und der Aufnahme eines Dialogs der Erinnerungen. Es geht dabei um die Menschen, die seit Jahrhunderten auf polnischem Boden gelebt hatten, die zur Schatzkammer der polnischen Kultur einen gewaltigen Beitrag geleistet hatten und die die deutsche Besatzungsmacht vernichtet hatte. Es ist eine kritische Abrechnung mit der Geschichte der polnisch-jüdischen Beziehungen in der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs und nach dessen Ende, mit der polnischen Politik gegenüber dem Holocaust und mit der Erinnerung an diesen. Die Autoren vertreten verschiedene wissenschaftliche Disziplinen; sie stellen die Evolution der Erinnerungskultur der Polen dar und führen die Leser durch die Zeit der Existenz der Volksrepublik Polen (1945-1989) sowie des demokratischen Polen seit 1990. In diesem Buch begegnen sich erfahrene Autoren und Vertreter der jungen Generation, die sich mit dem Problem der Schuld, ihrer Verdrängung und der Ausfüllung der weißen Flecken der Geschichte auseinandersetzen und eine eigene Sprache für die Interpretation der Vergangenheit suchen. Sie analysieren die verschiedenen Träger der Erinnerung an die Juden (u. a. Museen, Filme und die schöne Literatur). Das Buch setzt ein Zeichen für eine neue Empfindsamkeit für die Vergangenheit und deren Bedeutung für das Verständnis der Gegenwart.
