    Description: Published on the occasion of Hubert Houben’s 70th birthday, this volume focuses on border crossings as one of the topics dear to the jubilarian. By starting from a concept of borders as a social construct, the authors look at selected cases of transcending spatial, cultural and legal boundaries in the Middle Ages. The resulting complexity and multi-perspectivity reflects different research methods and traditions, revealing a broad spectrum of possible approaches to the topic of border crossings.

Prendendo come punto di partenza un concetto di confine come costruzione sociale, le autrici e gli autori affrontano casi selezionati di scavalcamento di confini spaziali, culturali e legali durante il Medioevo. La complessità e la multiperspettività che ne derivano riflettono metodi e tradizioni di ricerca diversi, che insieme rivelano un ampio spettro di approcci possibili al tema dell’attraversamento dei confini.

    Description: Rosa Luxemburg was one of the most important intellectuals of the »long« 19th century, and her work in politics and within the European labor movement was extremely manifold. She understood socialism – especially to the displeasure of the Bolsheviks – as a unity of political and social freedoms. For this reason, she remains a figure of identification to this day, and her writings have an unbroken relevance. Luxemburg’s multifaceted life spanned from the birth of the German Empire to shortly after its end (1871–1919) and will be honored in a two-volume edition in the anniversary year 2021. Volume 1 provides an overview of her biography and takes stock of her political activities.

Jahrhunderts und ihr Wirken in der Politik sowie innerhalb der europäischen Arbeiterbewegung äußerst facettenreich. Sozialismus verstand sie – zum Unmut der deutschen Kaisertreuen ebenso wie der russischen Bolschewiki – als Einheit von politischen und sozialen Freiheiten. Bis heute ist sie deshalb eine Identifikationsfigur, ihre Schriften besitzen eine ungebrochene Aktualität. Luxemburgs vielgestaltiges Leben reichte von der Entstehung des Deutschen Kaiserreiches bis kurz nach dessen Ende (1871–1919) und wird im Jubiläumsjahr 2021 mit einer zweibändigen Ausgabe gewürdigt. Band 1 vermittelt einen Überblick über Biografisches und liefert eine Bestandsaufnahme ihres politischen Wirkens.

    Description: The Russian Revolution of 1917, which in reality consisted of several uprisings, forms the caesura between the »long« 19th and the »short« 20th century and ushered in the so-called »Age of Extremes« (Eric Hobsbawm). Many who had believed in the success of the revolution were bitterly disappointed by the actual developments. Once again, a revolution had not been able to achieve what many had expected, even longed for. The revolutionary uprising of February 1917 ended with its corruption in October of the same year. On the basis of an analytical comparative model, Frank Jacob addresses the question of the process of this corruption and shows whether it was due to an inevitable development of events or rather to the will to power of a few.
    Description: Die Russische Revolution von 1917, die in Wirklichkeit aus mehreren Erhebungen bestand, bildet die Zäsur zwischen »langem« 19. und »kurzem« 20. Jahrhundert und leitete das sogenannte »Zeitalter der Extreme« (Eric Hobsbawm) ein. Viele, die an den Erfolg der Revolution geglaubt hatten, wurden von den tatsächlichen Entwicklungen bitter enttäuscht. Wieder einmal war eine Revolution nicht dazu in der Lage gewesen, das zu erreichen, was von vielen erwartet, ja herbeigesehnt wurde. Die revolutionäre Erhebung des Februar 1917 endete mit ihrer Korrumpierung im Oktober desselben Jahres. Frank Jacob widmet sich auf Basis eines analytischen Vergleichsmodells der Frage nach dem Prozess dieser Korrumpierung und zeigt, ob diese einer zwangsläufigen Entwicklung der Ereignisse oder vielmehr dem Machtwillen einiger weniger geschuldet war.

    Description: Without Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, our image of Rosa Luxemburg would be completely different today. In the 1920s, the couple worked together on the estate of the murdered politician, which made it possible to produce the first edition of her works. Later, when Frölich and Wolfstein had fled from the National Socialists into exile in France, one of the earliest and at the same time most authentic biographies of Luxemburg (Rosa Luxemburg: Gedanke und Tat) was written by both of them in 1939 under Frölich's name, which was fed by this rich store of knowledge. But who were Rosi Wolfstein and Paul Frölich, who seem almost forgotten today? Their own political careers each started in the SPD before World War I, led them through the anti-war camp to the founding congress of the KPD (Communist Party). While Frölich was elected to the Reichstag, Wolfstein sat in the Prussian Landtag. Out of anti-Stalinist conviction, they left the KPD and eventually became co-founders of the SAP (Socialist Workers' Party), which they headed before fleeing. But they returned to Germany... Riccardo Altieri illustrates in a very readable way the result of his research of several years into a double biography from the point of view of network history. Only by consulting international sources from Wolfstein's and Frölich's network could the study come into being at all, since the protagonists had not left a closed estate due to the persecution during the Nazi era.

    Description: The book examines how the integration of local merchants in the south of France contributed to the commercial expansion of the cities of Marseille and Montpellier in the 12th and 13th centuries. The origin of the flourishing long-distance trade is not sought in the establishment of the Crusader states in the East, but instead is explored at its roots, the local trade cycles in the hinterland of the port cities. The book is built around micro-historical sketches about specific merchant families, merchant ships and trade privileges, thus revealing unknown connections and new perspectives. Mediterranean trade is described from the perspective of inland merchants, and trade with the Levant is seen from the perspective of Provençal and Catalan merchants who traded through foreign financial centres and under foreign flags. The book explores how the hinterland made the long-distance trade of Marseille and Montpellier possible in the first place by providing goods, capital and manpower.
    Description: Comment les réseaux de marchands du sud de la France ont-ils contribué à l’essor commercial de Marseille et de Montpellier aux xiie et xiiie siècles? Comment les villes de l’intérieur des terres, en fournissant des biens, des capitaux et des personnes, ont-elles permis l’expansion du commerce méditerranéen des grandes villes côtières? Dans cette étude, les fondements du commerce à longue distance sont non seulement expliqués par l’établissement des États croisés au Levant mais ils sont aussi explorés directement à leur source, à savoir les circuits commerciaux actifs dans l’arrière-pays, aux alentours des villes portuaires. Des analyses microhistoriques de familles marchandes, de navires marchands et de privilèges commerciaux spécifiques mettent en lumière des liens jusqu’alors inconnus entre les différents acteurs économiques, ouvrant ainsi de nouvelles perspectives sur le développement du commerce à longue distance dans le sud de la France au Moyen Âge.
    Description: Wie hat die Vernetzung lokaler südfranzösischer Kaufleute zum kommerziellen Aufschwung der Städte Marseille und Montpellier im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert beigetragen? Wie hat das Binnenland durch die Bereitstellung von Waren, Kapital und Menschen den expandierenden Mittelmeerhandel der größeren Küstenstädte ermöglicht? Der Ursprung des Fernhandels wird in dieser Studie nicht nur mit der Errichtung der Kreuzfahrerherrschaften im Osten erklärt, sondern direkt an seiner Wurzel erforscht, nämlich an den lokalen Handelskreisläufen im Hinterland der Hafenstädte. In mikrohistorischen Untersuchungen zu bestimmten Kaufmannsfamilien, Handelsschiffen und Handelsprivilegierungen werden bisher unbekannte Verbindungen zwischen den verschiedenen wirtschaftlichen Akteuren zum Vorschein gebracht und so neue Sichtweisen auf die Entwicklung des südfranzösischen Fernhandels im Mittelalter eröffnet.

    Description: Since the Middle Ages, next to churches the courts have been the most important employers of professional musicians. The important role of court music in European and particularly in German music history has not been reflected in the efforts made by musicological scholarship in the past. Although there are numerous studies on particular courts, comparative studies are still lacking. This publication documents the current state of research on the most important court chapels, as well as selected smaller aristocratic chapels in southern Germany during the eighteenth century.
    Description: Im 18. Jahrhundert waren die Fürstenhöfe neben den Kirchen die wichtigsten Träger des Musiklebens. Gemessen an der Bedeutung der Hofkapellen ist ihre Geschichte nur unzureichend erforscht. Es liegt zwar eine ganze Reihe von Spezialuntersuchungen zu einzelnen Höfen vor, doch fehlen nach wie vor vergleichende Untersuchungen. Die vorliegende Publikation dokumentiert den gegenwärtigen Stand der Forschung zu den wichtigsten Hofkapellen sowie zu ausgewählten kleineren Adelskapellen im süddeutschen Raum.

    Description: The Auerspergs [Turjaški] are among the rare noble families in the Slovenian territory with systematically preserved archives that date back to the Middle Ages. Most archival materials of the family, which was largely embedded in the framework of the Province of Carniola until the end of the 15th century, are presently kept in two private family archives: the Turjak Comital Fideicomiss Archives (Gräflich Auersperg'sches Fideikommisarchiv), first kept in the Turjak Castle until 1942 and now in the Carinthian Provincial Archives in Klagenfurt, and the Turjak Ducal Archives (Fürstlich Auersperg'sches Archiv), which were first moved to the Turjak Palace in Ljubljana and the Lower Austrian Lösensteinleiten Castle and finally ended up in the Viennese Haus-, Hof-, und Staatsarchiv.Turjaška knjiga listin 1 (1218–1400) [Turjak Book of Charters I (1218–1400)] contains 277 charters from the private archives of the Carniolan comital and ducal lines of the Auerspergs [Turjaški]. Published in their entirety, the charters are equipped with Slovenian regests and followed in the end by a comprehensive index of names and pictures of seals from the charters. With the publication of the Turjak charters, Slovenian historiography has gained an indispensable aid for the research of Slovenian medieval and modern history.
    Description: V Turjaški knjigi listin I (1218–1400) je objavljeno 277 listin iz zasebnih arhivov kranjske grofovske in knežje linije Turjaških (Auerspergov), ki so jih v sklopu grajskega arhiva do leta 1942 hranili na gradu Turjak, danes pa so shranjene izven slovenskega ozemlja. Listine so objavljene v celoti, opremljene so s slovenskimi regesti, ob koncu pa sledijo še obsežno imensko kazalo in slike pečatov z listin. Pripravljena izdaja turjaških listin sega do leta 1400 in je prvi del serije, v kateri bodo v končni fazi objavljene vse, tudi novoveške turjaške listine. Slovensko zgodovinopisje bo z objavo turjaških listin pridobilo nepogrešljiv pripomoček za raziskovanje slovenske srednjeveške in novoveške zgodovine.

    Description: The first Habsburg estates in Carniola were part of territorial acquisitions in eastern Alpine lands that the ascending dynasty obtained in the war with King Ottokar II of Bohemia towards the end of the thirteenth century and then gradually expanded. Even though the Habsburg dynastic territory had by the 1380s covered almost the entire Carniola, the economic base (landed property, which provided the provincial prince with regular income) was considerably limited. A sizeable portion of the territory was burdened by fiefs and pledges. The redemption of one of the vastest sets of pledged estates in the mid-1430s led to the emergence of account books for the following Carniolan fiscal properties: Kamnik, Gamberk, Goričane, Ig, Višnja Gora, Štatenberk, Novo mesto, Kostanjevica with offices Raka and Vivodina, Pazin, Završje, and Vranja. The account books serve as an extraordinary source for the economic history of the late Middle Ages, by also reflecting the turbulent period of the Habsburg European-wide ascendancy and Frederick’s war with the Counts of Celje. The volume constitutes a critical edition of the account books, with the accompanying discussion in the field of property, administrative and political history.
    Description: Zametki habsburške posesti na Kranjskem sodijo v sklop ozemeljskih pridobitev v vzhodnoalpskih deželah, ki jih je vzpenjajoča se dinastija iztržila iz bojev s češkim kraljem Otokarjem II. Přemyslom proti koncu 13. stoletja in so jih kasneje še razširili. Čeprav je v okvir habsburškega dinastičnega teritorija že v osemdesetih letih 14. stoletja spadal večji del kranjskega ozemlja, pa je bil gospodarski temelj (posest, ki je prinašala dohodke) bistveno manjši. Dobršen del ozemlja so bremenili fevdi in zastave. Ob sprostitvi enega od obsežnejših sklopov zastavljene posesti sredi tridesetih let 15. stoletja so nastali obračuni kranjskih komornih gospostev, in sicer za gospostva: Kamnik, Gamberk, Goričane, Ig, Višnja Gora, Štatenberk, Novo mesto, Kostanjevica z uradoma Raka in Vivodina, Pazin, Završje in Vranja. Obračuni predstavljajo izjemen vir za gospodarsko zgodovino poznega srednjega veka, obenem pa se v njih zrcali razgibano obdobje habsburškega evropskega vzpona in Friderikove vojne s celjskimi grofi. Knjiga prinaša tekstnokritično edicijo obračunov s spremljajočo uvodno razpravo s področja posestne, upravne in politične zgodovine.
