Notes: Abstract Based on the experimental data of strain-stress relation of single crystal and the complexity of polycrystal deformation, a calculating model is proposed and the calculating program is designed. Finally, the tensile deformation of the bicrystal aluminium specimen is simulated by means of the crystal elasto-plastic finite element method. The strain-stress curve of tension, the details of the slip deformation and the stress distribution are obtained. So the effect of the region near grain boundary is shown obviously.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with the computational methods for limit analysis of plane strain problems. The finite element mathematical programming formula (FE-MPF) for determining the upper bound load multiplier established by the authors earlier is adopted and modified for plane strain problems. The penalty method is used to impose the incompressibility constraint. The FE-MPF is solved by a direct iteration procedure without the need of a searching process. This algorithm is not sensitive to the volumetric locking effect. And it can be easily extended to the limit analysis of three dimensional problems. The results of numerical examples are satisfactory and show the stable convergency of the present algorithm.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with two mixed plate-bending elements with shear strain interpolations, a quadrilateral element and an 8-node serendipity-type element based on discussions on the element proposed in Ref.[1]. The shear strains and inner-forces in the natural coordinates are interpolated in an element and then transformed into Cartesian coordinates in accordance with covariant and contravariant tensor transformations, respectively. The quadrilateral element coincides with the element in Ref.[1] when it is rectangular. Numerical examples show that the two new elements are free from shear locking and spurious kinematic modes under regular and irregular meshes and have the advantages of being insensitive to element distortion and able to give fairly accurate results.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a generalized variational principle with two-field variables is derived from the Reissner principle of elasticity in the curvilinear coordinates of a revolution shell, based on which, a new kind of mixed elements with independent transverse rotations is formulated for revolution shells subjected to harmonic external loads. The resultant-stress interpolations are carefully selected so that the shear part of the element stiffness contains the Kirchhoff hypothesis for thin shells and element stiffness matrices have correct ranks. The elements are free from shear locking and spurious kinematic modes. Numerical examples show that the new elements have good generality and high accuracy for thin and moderately-thick revolution shells.

Notes: Abstract A mixed method of arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian boundary element and finite element method (ALE-BE-FE method) is proposed for solving fluid-structure impact problems, in which the effect of structural deformation due to hydrodynamic pressure is taken into account. In addition, this method also enables us to analyze the influence of nonlinear free surface conditions on the impact response. Two numerical examples of an impacting cylinder and an impacting wedge into an initially calm water treated as 2-D problems are presented. It shows that the proposed method is effective to obtain a fluid-structure impact solution.

Notes: Abstract Two sets of trial functions with different variables are constructed for the admissible space of the finite element analysis. The trial functions satisfy the equilibrium differential equation inside elements, while the deflections and rotations on the edges of the elements are approximated by the Peano hierarchical interpolation functions. Then, a generalized variational principle is applied to set up the p-version hybrid analytical finite element method for plate bending problems. The accuracy of finite element computation can be improved by increasing the order of the interpolation polynomials with fixed mesh. In the finite element formulation, to obtain the stiffness matrices and the load vectors, it is only necessary to perform quadrature over the edges of the elements. These matrices and vectors possess an embedding structure. The conformability between the elements can be controlled automatically.

Notes: Abstract The stochastic finite element method (SFEM) based on the local, averages of random fields, which was proposed in [5], is now generalized to analyze the structures with several correlated random parameters. The covariance matrix of the local averages of a random vector field is derived. The SFEM based on the local averages of random vector fields is formulated. The numerical examples show that the generalized SFEM preserves the advantages of the original one, i. e., rapid convergence, good accuracy and insensitivity to the correlation structures of random parameters.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents some test and analysis results for a spot welded joint subjected to tensile and alternate load. The effect of sheet rigidity on the tensile strength and fatigue life of the spot welded joint is studied by using the stress intensity factorsK I,K II,K III and an “effective stress intensity factor” Kϕθmax calculated by the finite element method for crack around the nugget. The results show that the “effective stress intensity factor” Kϕθmax is an essential parameter for estimating the fatigue life of the spot welded joint.

Notes: Abstract A simple and efficient numerical procedure for mixed mode fracture of quasibrittle materials is shown: This technique predicts crack trajectories as well as load-displacement or load-CMOD responses. The model is based on the cohesive crack concept and uses the local mode I approach. Numerical results agree quite well with three experimental sets of mixed mode fracture of concrete beams; one from Arrea and Ingraffea, another from García, Gettu and Carol and from a nonproportional loading by the authors. In constrast to more sophisticated models, this method offers two major advantages: it requires only material properties measured by standardized methods and it can easily be implemented with general multipurpose finite element codes.

Notes: Abstract Moving contact problems in a viscoelastic body with a rigidindentor are often seen in an industrial field. An evaluation of thetime-temperature-dependent stress and strain behavior around a contactregion is required in order to make clear the fundamental mechanism ofthe local fracture and wear on the contact surface of the viscoelasticbody under moving loads with dry friction. No analyses have yet beenpublished about the stress/strain of the viscoelastic moving contactproblem with the dry friction using both an experimental and a numericalmethod. The authors discuss an experimental and a numerical model forthe analysis of not only the viscoelastic stress and strain, but alsodeformations, taking into consideration the dry friction. Animage-processing-aided photoviscoelastic technique is applied foranalyzing the principal stress and strain behavior near the contactregion. Also, a two-dimensional plane stress model which consists of aviscoelastic strip and a rigid sliding cylinder is adopted in a finiteelement analysis of the same problem. The time-dependent stress andstrain and the coefficient of dry friction are successfully evaluated byexperimental and numerical methods.
