Description: The Building Services and Energy Efficiency (BSEE) Conference is an event that has become traditional in the world of civil engineering, since 1990. The main organizer is the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services. Every year, the conference presents issues of new scientific research as well as the companies' needs for creating new organizational solutions. The BSEE Conference covers all scientific and technological aspects of civil engineering and building services field: energy efficiency, building services, computer-aided design, and engineering, computational fluid dynamics, building services performance analysis, building services monitoring and management, heat and mass transfer, lighting systems, energy storage, renewable energy, enhancing sustainability and resilience of building services, numerical analysis in civil engineering, BIM. The building services and equipment have become essential elements in the construction of buildings to ensure the conditions of interior comfort. In a fast-evolving society, information is an essential element for the progress of economic-social activities, and the Conference of Building Services and Energy Efficiency represent the place where the exchange of information and ideas for the sustainable development of the built environment and its facilities takes place. The BSEE Conference accepts review articles, original scientific articles, and cases from the field of civil engineering and building services – mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and materials. All papers in BSEE Conference are first peer-reviewed and only accepted articles that have not yet appeared in a printed or electronic issue are published.

Description: Adhesive abilities of insects, spiders and reptiles have inspired researchers for a long time. All these organisms show outstanding performance, particularly for force, adhesion and climbing abilities, relative to their size and weight. Scientists have focused on the gecko’s adhesive paw system and climbing abilities. Its adhesion mechanism has been an important topic of research for nearly 150 years. However, certain phenomena of geckos are still not fully understood and represent today the main challenge in several scientific discussions that aim to better understand their adhesive ability. The manuscript deals with the influence of surface roughness on the gecko’s adhesion on the inverted surface of Poly(methyl meth-acrylate) (PMMA) and glass, of PMMA with different surface roughness, on the gecko’s maximum normal adhesive force. In general, the adhesive structure and mechanism of an animal could be connected to the micro-structured roughness of natural substrata (e.g. plant surfaces) in the natural environment. This manuscript focuses on the nanometer scale, which is involved in everything from gecko spatulae to the waxy nanotubules of the lotus leaf, to the fibroin protein materials that constitute spider silks. In general, spider silks display superior mechanical properties, but only in the last few decades, researchers investigated various types of silks and evaluated their very different mechanical properties. The dragline and the flag silks (or radial and circumferential) of orb weaving spiders have been characterized in scientific literature while, to our knowledge, few studies have been conducted on bundles, which connect the cocoons of Meta menardi to the ceiling of caves.

Description: Sand, clay and rock have to be excavated for a variety of purposes, such as dredging, trenching, mining (including deep sea mining), drilling, tunnel boring and many other applications. Many excavations take place on dry land, but they are also frequently required in completely saturated conditions, and the methods necessary to accomplish them consequently vary widely. This book provides an overview of cutting theories. It begins with a generic model, valid for all types of soil (sand, clay and rock), and continues with the specifics of dry sand, water-saturated sand, clay, atmospheric rock and hyperbaric rock. Small blade angles and large blade angles are discussed for each soil type, and for each case considered the equations/model for cutting forces, power and specific energy are given. With models verified by laboratory research, principally from the Delft University of Technology, and data from other recognized sources, this book will prove an invaluable reference for anybody whose work involves major excavations of any kind.

Description: Herbicide resistance has become an important constraint on modern agricultural practices. An alarming increase in weed biotypes that are resistant to herbicides has also been reported. Opportunity exists for a novel weed management technology, which is also compatible with no-till agricultural practices. Microwave heating can kill both emerged weed plants and weed seeds in the soil. When the intensity of the microwave fields is moderate, plants, which have already emerged, are susceptible to microwave treatment. If the microwave field is intense enough, very rapid volumetric heating and some thermal runaway in the plant structures cause micro-steam explosions in the plant cells, which rupture the plant structures, leading to death. Soil treatment requires significantly more energy however, there are secondary benefits for crops growing in microwave treated soil. These include: significant reduction of the dormant weed seed bank significant reduction of nematode populations significant reduction of fungal populations better availability of indigenous nitrogen for the plants more rapid humification and significant increases in crop growth and yield. Microwave weed management and soil treatment is not restricted by weather conditions therefore, the technology may offer some timeliness and environmental benefits, which are yet to be quantified in a cropping system.
