    Description: The concept of poetic justice is reinterpreted within the framework of cognitive literary theory and is understood as the reader's interpretation. This reinterpretation of the concept is demonstrated through Arthur Schnitzler's stories of betrayal, which realise a psychologising version of poetic justice typical of the turn of the century around 1900. Poetische Gerechtigkeit ist ein seit der Antike bekanntes und in der Aufklärung zum normativen Prinzip erhobenes Konzept, das in der Gegenwart weitgehend als obsolet abgetan wird und heute meist nur noch in populärliterarischen Werken präsent ist. Interpretationen, welche die poetische Gerechtigkeit verwerfen, operieren jedoch mit einem traditionellen, textorientierten Begriff und behandeln sie als Strukturelement des Plots. Im vorliegenden Buch wird das Konzept im kognitionstheoretischen Rahmen neu interpretiert und nicht mehr als Bestandteil der Handlung, sondern als Interpretation des Lesers verstanden, motiviert von verschiedenen kognitiven Dispositionen, wie z.B. dem ‚Rechtsgefühl‘, dem ‚Glauben an eine gerechte Welt‘ oder der ‚altruistischen Bestrafung‘. Diese Neuinterpretation wird anhand von Arthur Schnitzlers Verräter-Narrativen erprobt, in denen eine für die Zeit um 1900 typische psychologisierende Version von poetischer Gerechtigkeit rekonstruiert wird.

    Description: The Holy Scripture was used as a form of pre- and postbaptismal catechesis in early medieval Constantinople. This volume presents an examination of the theological content communicated to catechumens through the Bible, and also the role of Scripture in Christian families and in the school system of Constantinople. Die Heilige Schrift wurde zu einer Grundlage für die christliche Unterweisung in Konstantinopel, indem sie im Gottesdienst zu jedem Tauftermin sowie nach der Taufe eine Art der Katechese darstellte. Zudem galt die Bibel als eine Basis für Erziehungs- bzw. Bildungszwecke in Konstantinopel. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet aus theologischer Perspektive die etablierten Bibeltexte in der artifiziell zu verstehenden Zeitperiode zwischen dem 7. und dem 10. Jh., in der ein steigender Rekurs auf die patristische Schriftauslegung zu beobachten ist. Diese trug neben der Überlieferung des eindrücklichen theologischen Gehalts auch zur aktiven Einbettung der Schrift in liturgische Riten bei. Neben der Aufteilung der alttestamentlichen Perikopen fokussiert sich die vorliegende Untersuchung auf einige Evangeliumstexte, die sich als eine postbaptismale Katechese erwiesen. In einem abschließenden Beitrag wird die Rolle der Psalmen im Schulwesen und in den christlichen Familien untersucht.

    Description: This volume, now in its second and revised edition, deals with the legal status of the three Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - as a consequence of the illegality of the Soviet annexation in 1940-1991. It offers a detailed historical overview of the Soviet takeover of the Baltic States in 1939/1940 and analysis of international law as it was in force, also regionally and bilaterally, at the time. It examines the role of the continuity of the diplomatic representations of the Baltic States and other manifestations of the Western non-recognition of the Soviet annexation. Moreover, the book examines the nature of the restoration of the Baltic States in 1991 based on their State continuity claim. It also studies in detail questions such as borders, citizenship and reparation claims, and asks to what extent State continuity could or could not be restored in practice. Compared to the first edition, the text has been updated (for example, on developments regarding border treaties) but also more background references have been added on the history of the Baltic States, Soviet and post-Soviet Russian responses to the continuity claim of the Baltic States, etc. The book interprets the Soviet annexation and Baltic States' continuity case against the wider backdrop of developments in international law in the 20th century and argues that the outcome reflected important normative developments in international law, away from mere effectivity. The case of the Baltic States will be relevant for current and future cases of illegal annexation, following the threat and use of military force prohibited under international law.

    Description: The day after the epidemic broke out in Wuhan, Chinese people in France are already busy sending masks across borders and sharing media information; at the same time, a significant number of Chinese people are victims of racist attacks, insults and discrimination in France. Based on both quantitative and qualitative empirical data, this book reveals the new dynamics and interactions generated by the Covid-19 pandemic not only between different sub-groups of Chinese in France, but also between ethnic Chinese and their both countries: China and France. Verse and Transmutation: A Corpus of Middle English Alchemical Poetry identifies and investigates a corpus of twenty-one anonymous recipes for the philosophers’ stone dating from the fifteenth century. These were circulated and received in association with each other until the mid-seventeenth century, when a number of them appeared in Elias Ashmole’s Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum. These editions are the first to make this previously unidentified corpus available to researchers. The accompanying studies discover the complex histories of these alchemica, in plain and illuminated manuscripts, as anonyma and in attribution to famous authors, and in private and institutional, medical and academic book collections. Together, they offer novel insights into the role of alchemy and poetry in late medieval and early modern England.
