    Description: Dataset: PIPA Benthic Data
Description: This dataset includes percent cover of benthic functional groups in the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA). Percent cover of reef-building coral was quantified using photoquadrat transects conducted during 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2018 following standard Pacific coral reef monitoring protocols. Areas of study include: Phoenix Islands, Kiribati. Kanton Island (2.8 S, 171.6 W), Rawaki Island (3.7 S 170.7 W), Nikumaroro Island (4.7 S, 174.5 W), Orona Island (4.5 S, 172.2 W). These data were published in Fox et al., 2021 (DOI: 10.1029/2021GRL094128). Description: Dataset: Exudate Uptake Incubations - Macronutrient Data
Description: Incubation experiments were conducted in St. John, US Virgin Islands to investigate the composition of exudates released from different species of benthic organisms, and the response of reef seawater microbial communities to mixed exudates released from different species and to specific metabolites. Exudates were collected from the stony coral Porites astreoides, and the octocoral Gorgonia ventalina after an 8 hour incubation. Reef seawater microbial communities were incubated separately in the presence of exudates from P. astreoides and G. ventalina for 48 hours and samples were collected to monitor changes in macronutrient concentrations. For a complete list of measurements, refer to the full dataset description in the supplemental file 'Dataset_description.pdf'. Description: Dataset: Exudate Uptake Incubations - Microbial Abundances (Flow Cytometry)
Reef seawater microbial communities were incubated separately in the presence of exudates from P. astreoides and G. ventalina for 48 hours and samples were collected to monitor changes in microbial abundance via flow cytometry and microbial community composition via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Complementary Targeted and Untargeted metabolomic data from these incubation experiments is available on the MetaboLights database under accession number MTBLS2855. Description: Dataset: Metabolite Uptake Incubations - Microbial Abundances (Flow Cytometry)
Description: Pre-filtered reef seawater microbial communities collected from Lameshur Bay, U.S. Virgin Islands were incubated separately in the presence of the individual metabolites riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and caffeine for 24 hours and samples were collected to monitor changes in microbial community composition using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and microbial abundances using flow cytometry. Targeted metabolomic data from these incubations is available on the MetaboLights database under accession number MTBLS3286. Description: Dataset: Share Your Thoughts
Description: Oceanographic data, when well-documented and stewarded toward preservation, have the potential to accelerate new science and facilitate our understanding of complex natural systems. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) is funded by the NSF to document and manage marine biological, chemical, physical, and biogeochemical data, ensuring their discovery and access, and facilitating their reuse. The task of curating and providing access to research data is a collaborative process, with associated actors and critical activities occurring throughout the data’s life cycle. BCO-DMO supports all phases of the data life cycle and works closely with investigators to ensure open access of well-documented project data and information. Supporting this curation process is a flexible cyberinfrastructure that provides the means for data submission, discovery, and access; ultimately enabling reuse. Based upon community feedback, this infrastructure is undergoing evaluation and improvement to better meet oceanographic research needs. This poster will introduce the repository and describe some of the strategic enhancements coming to BCO-DMO, and presents an opportunity for you to provide feedback on enhancements yet to come. We invite you to think about your own research workflow of searching and accessing new data for research, and to provide your feedback through the poster’s interactive sections. Your input can help BCO-DMO improve its service to the research community. For a complete list of measurements, refer to the full dataset description in the supplemental file 'Dataset_description.pdf'.
