Etna earthquake, southern Italy. Scientific Data, 7(1), 42, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-020-0383-0
    Publication Date: 2024-06-22
Description: We provide a database of the coseismic surface ruptures produced by the 26 December 2018 Mw 4.9 earthquake that struck the eastern flank of Mt. Etna (southern Italy), the largest active volcano in Europe. Despite its small size, this shallow earthquake caused an impressive system of coseismic surface ruptures extending about 8.5 km, along the trace of the NNW-trending active Fiandaca Fault. We performed detailed field surveys were performed in the epicentral region to describe the ruptures geometry and kinematics. These exhibit a dominant right-oblique sense of slip with coseismic displacement peaks of 0.35 m. The Fiandaca Fault is part of a complex active faults system affecting the eastern flank of Mt. Etna. Its seismic history indicates a prominent surface-faulting potential, so our study is essential for unravelling the seismotectonics of shallow earthquakes in volcanic settings, and contributes updating empirical scaling laws relating moderate-sized earthquakes and surface faulting. The collected observations have been parsed and organized in a concise database consisting of 874 homogeneous georeferenced records. The main features describing the coseismic ruptures are the following: ID, time of sample collection, location (latitude, longitude, elevation), type of rupture, type of affected substratum, attitude (dip angle, dip direction, strike), surface offset (opening, throw, strike slip, net slip), kinematics, slip vector attitude, width of the deformation zone.

Description: Contribution of different molecular categories, H/Cwa and O/Cwa elemental ratios, aromaticity index (Aimodwa) and double bond equivalents (DBEwa) and indices of degradation (Ideg) and lability (MLBwl; Ibioprod). The contribution of each molecular category is expressed as a percentage of the total formulas in each sample obtained after normalization. Molecular formulas were additionally associated with different molecular categories because less than 6% of the DOM has been identified on a molecular level. Molecular categories are defined as follow: 1) condensed aromatics, with an AImod ≥ 0.67 (Koch and Dittmar, 2006, doi:10.1002/rcm.2386) was separated in 3 different subgroups, either 〈15 (condensed aromatics 〈15C), or ≥15 (condensed aromatics ≥15C) C atoms both without heteroatoms, or containing heteroelements (condensed aromatics-CHOx); 2) polyphenols, with an AImod 〉0.5 but 〈0.67; 3) highly unsaturated formulas, with an AImod 〈0.5, H/C 〈1.5; 4) formulas of unsaturated aliphatics, with an 1.5〈 H/C 〈2, O/C 〈0.9, N = 0; 5) saturated fatty acids, with an H/C 〉2, O/C 〈0.9 and with either no heteroatoms (sat. fatty acids) or with heteroatoms (sat. fatty acids-CHOx); 6) formulas of sugars, with an O/C 〉0.9 and with either no (sugars) or with heteroatoms (sugars-CHOx) and 7)unsaturated with N (unsaturated-N) molecular formulas, with 1.5 〈 H/C 〈2, O/C 〈 0.9 and N 〉0. Additionally, polyphenols, highly unsaturated and unsaturated aliphatics were further separated in oxygen rich (-O-rich) and oxygen poor (-O-poor) if the element ratio O/C was 〉 0.5 or 〈 0.5 respectively.

In:  Supplement to: Ceccopieri, Milena; Carreira, Renato S; Wagener, Angela L R; Hefter, Jens; Mollenhauer, Gesine (2018): On the application of alkenone- and GDGT-based temperature proxies in the south-eastern Brazilian continental margin. Organic Geochemistry, 126, 43-56, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.orggeochem.2018.10.009

Description: The applicability of two organic geochemical proxies (UK'37 based on alkenones and TEXH86 based on glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers) for ocean temperatures was investigated on a regional scale in the SE Brazilian continental margin (Campos Basin) using 53 core-top sediments. In 71% of the samples for UK'37 and 85% for TEXH86, the estimated annual mean sea surface temperature (SST) is comparable to the climatological annual mean data, with deviations within the calibration error. The surface TEXH86 estimates reflects the surface mixed layer, while the depth-integrated (0-200 m) TEXH86 estimates showed better agreement with temperatures at 100-200 mdepth. In addition, the SST-UK'37 results were more consistent (73% of the samples) using a winter calibration rather than an annual mean calibration. This seasonal effect might be ascribed to an increase in the abundance of haptophytes in the region during the winter. Exceptions to these general trends were observed for both proxies as a strong cold bias in reconstructed temperature in a few samples in the southern portion of the studied region, which may be related to (i) a predominant subsurface habitat of Thaumarchaeota combined with enhanced primary production and flux of particles during upwelling and (ii) alkenones being laterally transported from adjacent colder waters. Effects of river input of terrestrially sourced GDGTs on TEXH86 are not evident. Overall, our findings show that UK'37 and TEXH86 are suitable temperature proxies for paleoclimate studies at a regional scale in the SE Brazilian continental margin, but on a local scale the effects of upwelling must be taken in consideration.
