In:  Supplement to: Tang, Weiyi; Cassar, Nicolas (2019): Data‐Driven Modeling of the Distribution of Diazotrophs in the Global Ocean. Geophysical Research Letters, 46(21), 12258-12269, https://doi.org/10.1029/2019GL084376
    Publication Date: 2024-07-06
Description: We supplemented the dataset presented in Luo et al. (2012) "Database of diazotrophs in global ocean: abundance, biomass and nitrogen fixation rates" with measurements of nifH genes using qPCR from 17 additional publications. This addition represents a 141% and a 118% increase in the number of depth-integrated and volumetric data points compared to the database of Luo et al. (2012). This new database includes 223 (1428), 253 (1575), 226 (1424) and 144 (958) observations of depth-integrated (volumetric) abundances of Trichodesmium, UCYN-A, UCYN-B and Richelia, respectively. Based on the updated dataset, we applied a machine learning algorithm-random forest to estimate the nifH abundances of Trichodesmium, UCYN-A, UCYN-B and Richelia in the global ocean. The updated dataset of observed diazotroph nifH abundances, machine learning algorithms, codes and the modeled diazotroph nifH abundances in the global ocean are deposited here. 1. Diazotroph nifH abundances in the global ocean: observed diazotroph nifH abundances compiled from the literature 2. Diazotrophs_RF_models: random forest models built in MATLAB to estimate diazotroph abundances in the global ocean including "model_Tricho_tree", "model_UCYNA_tree", "model_UCYNB_tree", and "model_Richelia_tree" 3. Diazotrophs_RF_global_monthly: monthly average diazotroph abundances (nifH gene copies m-2) in the global ocean estimated by random forest models 4. diazotroph_abundances_prediction: MATLAB script file to predict diazotroph abundances using random forest models ("Diazotrophs_RF_models"), predictors ("predicotors_diazotrophs") and basin separation file ("basin_separation") 5. predictors_diazotrophs: predictors at monthly scale [1.lat; 2.lon; 3.month; 4.solar-flux; 5.wind; 6.sst; 7.sss; 8.log10(nitrate); 9.log10(phosphate); 10.log10(p*); 11.oxygen; 12.par; 13.mld; 14.par_mld; 15.log10(chl_a)); 16.iron] 6. basin_separation: a file used to denote and separate different ocean basins and land

Description: Marine phytoplankton are responsible for half of the global net primary production and perform multiple other ecological functions and services of the global ocean. These photosynthetic organisms comprise more than 4300 marine species, but their biogeographic patterns and the resulting species diversity are poorly known, mostly owing to severe data limitations. Here, we compile, synthesize, and harmonize marine phytoplankton occurrence data from the two largest biological occurrence archives (Ocean Biogeographic Information System; OBIS, and Global Biodiversity Information Facility; GBIF) and three recent data collections. The resulting PhytoBase data set contains over 1.36 million marine phytoplankton occurrence records (1.28 million at the level of species) for a total of 1704 species, spanning the principal groups of the Bacillariophyceae, Dinoflagellata, and Haptophyta as well as several other groups. This data compilation increases the amount of phytoplankton occurrence data available through the single largest contributing archive (OBIS) by 65%. Data span all ocean basins, latitudes and most seasons. Analyzing the oceanic inventory of sampled phytoplankton species richness at the broadest spatial scales possible, using a resampling procedure, we find that richness tends to saturate in the pantropics at ~93% of all species in our database, at ~64% in temperate waters, and at ~35% in the cold Northern Hemisphere, while the Southern Hemisphere remains underexplored. We provide metadata on the cruise, research institution, depth, and date for each occurrence record. Cell-counts for 193 763 records are also included. We strongly recommend consideration of global spatiotemporal biases in sampling intensity and varying taxonomic sampling scopes between research programs when analyzing the occurrence database. Including such information into statistical analysis tools, such as species distribution models, may serve to project the diversity, niches, and distribution of species in the contemporary and future ocean, opening the door for a quantification of macro-ecological phytoplankton patterns.

Description: This data set consists of analytical results from the HAWK Pyrolysis and TOC instrument for 161 bulk samples from Mesozoic to Cenozoic strata at 20 DSDP-ODP sites in the South Atlantic region, from the Weddell Sea in the south to the Demerara Rise in the north, and in the Mozambique Ridge. Based on a revised chronostratigraphic and paleoenvironment framework (Setoyama and Kanungo, submitted), our pyrolysis results, combined with data published by previous studies, allow us to identify seven Mesozoic source-rock intervals: two in the Southern South Atlantic (SA), one in the Central SA and four in the Equatorial SA. Furthermore, these data also provide an estimate of the source-rock potential and quality of the identified intervals, which are influenced by depositional environments. A significant portion of the pyrolysis data is affected by the mineral matrix effect (MME) that artificially lowers the estimated potential and quality of source rocks. Further analyses are therefore required to correct the MME and for the proper identification of organic matter to ensure the reliable determination of organofacies, thereby facilitating improved source rock system evaluation.

    Publication Date: 2024-07-06
Description: With reference to the starting questions and aims of this study the following results can be given: 1. Anthropogenic metal fragments and magnetic spherules, present in low concentrations only in the southeastern part of the island of Usedom, probably originate from ships in the harbour of Świnoujście. 2. The heavy mineral garnet in litoral sands is highly correlated with mass-specific magnetic susceptibility, therefore this method is suitable for the detection of placers at Usedom. 3. For spring 2017, lithoclast-rich sands at Ahlbeck indicate coast-parallel net transport from the next cliff with moraine material in a southeastern direction over a distance of several kilometers. 4. Studies in the recent litoral zone of the Island of Usedom demonstrate that by means of the parameters magnetic susceptibility, Munsell value, Mg and Si content of oxalate-solvable fraction, all of them determinable with relatively sparse amount of lab work, an attribution of coastal sands to the sedimentary environments: dunes, beach, fluvial-estuarine zone, is possible; this could help for the interpretation of quaternary sediment sequences with respect to shore distance in sediment cores where no bedding structures or fossils are preserved.
