Description: Implementation by NASA of the South Pacific severe storm detection and warning system project for the Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) in Nadi, Fiji, is discussed. A description of the need and use of the system by the FMS, of data reception, of interactive computer techniques, of training, and of the benefits to be derived from implementation of the system is given. The project allows precise tracking of all South Pacific tropical cyclones with frequent high-resolution reception of both the Japanese GMS and the U.S. GOES-West visible and IR cloud images.

Description: A lightning mapper sensor was conceived for detecting and locating lightning over large areas of the earth's surface, taking into account also a measurement of the radiant energy and a recording of the time of lightning occurrence. The considered device will basically be a calibrated lightning imager. The type of information provided is currently not available on a large scale basis. By using the mapper, scientists will, for the first time, be able to study the electrosphere from scales on the order of the earth's diameter down to the size of individual storms (10 km). Attention is given to details regarding the sensor components, and questions of sensor performance.

Description: The cartographic products required to support science and planetary exploration during the next 10 years were assessed. Only major map series or first order maps needed to characterize the surface physiography of a planet or satellite were considered. Included in these considerations are maps needed as bases for plotting geologic, geophysical, and atmospheric phenomena and for planning future planetary exploration. These products consist of three types of maps: controlled photomosaics, shaded relief maps, and topographic contour maps.

Description: A measurement technique which continuously determines the wind vector on board an airliner during takeoff and landing is introduced. Its implementation is intended to deliver sufficient statistical background concerning low frequency wind changes in the atmospheric boundary layer and extended knowledge about deterministic wind shear modeling. The wind measurement scheme is described and the adaptation of apparatus onboard an A300 airbus is shown. Preliminary measurements made during level flight demonstrate the validity of the method.

Description: The results of observations of the Giacobini-Zinner comet on 25 and 31 October 1959 are presented. The magnitude of the comet was measured photoelectrically in two spectral regions. The radius is on the order of one kilometer. The photoelectric measurements of comets 1959b and 1957c were used to measure the abundances of the CN and C2 radicals and of solid particles in the heads.

Description: Techniques for remote sensing of particles, from cloud droplet to hailstone size, using optical and microwave frequencies are reviewed. The inherent variability of atmospheric particulates is examined to delineate conditions when the signal can give information to be effectively utilized in a forecasting context. The physical limitations resulting from the phase, size, orientation and concentration variability of the particulates are assessed.

Description: Dating by measurement of impact crater frequencies developed in the past years primarily on the basis of the data from the missions to the Moon and Mars. The method allows a good relative dating to be obtained and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn through photographic analyses. A cratering chronology was obtained for the period between the oldest Moon crust (4.3 to 4.4 billion years) to the present time which gives a good absolute dating of any areas of the Moon's surface.

Description: The process by which the landing site for the Viking lander spacecraft was certified is described. Soviet attempts to investigate Mars using the Mars class spacecraft are reviewed. Radar as a tool to study planetary surfaces is discussed. The launch and flight of Viking 1 are recounted. The challenges and success of soft landing of the Viking lander on the Martian surface are described.
