Beschreibung: The data processing system for the Helios experiment 6, measuring energetic charged particles of solar, planetary and galactic origin in the inner solar system, is described. The aim of this experiment is to extend knowledge on origin and propagation of cosmic rays. The different programs for data reduction, analysis, presentation, and scientific evaluation are described as well as hardware and software of the data processing equipment. A chronological presentation of the data processing operation is given. Procedures and methods for data analysis which were developed can be used with minor modifications for analysis of other space research experiments.

Beschreibung: It is demonstrated that interstellar dust grains forward-scatter far-ultraviolet radiation extremely strongly: the value of the Henyey-Greenstein scattering parameter g at 1425 A is shown to be at least 0.75; the actual value is very likely greater than 0.9. Also, observations of the Virgo cluster of galaxies sets a limit of tau greater than 2 x 10 to the 25th sec on the lifetime of 17-20 ev/C-squared heavy neutrinos, if such neutrinos are responsible for the gravitational binding of the cluster.

Beschreibung: Cosmological and astrophysical implications of large scale fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background are discussed, with attention given to galaxy formation. Angular anisotropies are mentioned as yielding information on the matter distribution during early epochs, characterized by inhomogeneities which persist on large scales. Factors such as the curvature of the universe and the hypothesis of massive neutrinos with m more than 30 eV affect the observed anomalies, which can be traced backwards to determine the source of nonlinear structures. Neutrino rest masses of less than a few eV imply isothermal fluctuations in the initial conditions, while gaseous fragmentation of adiabatic pancakes does provide a basis for an acceptable galaxy formation and clustering scenario. However, the primordial isothermal fluctuations fit well with observational constraints imposed by a neutrino-dominated universe.

Beschreibung: Galactic cosmic rays represent samples of matter from areas outside the solar system. New information regarding the elemental composition of cosmic rays has been obtained in connection with the French-Danish experiment on HEA0-3 and recent balloon experiments. The energy dependence of the source composition is considered along with a comparison of cosmic ray and solar system abundances, and the N-14 source abundance. Attention is given to cosmic ray clocks and the Mn-54 problem, advances concerning cross section measurements, and cosmic ray isotopes. The considered new observations suggest that cosmic ray elemental abundance differences from the solar system continue to be ordered by atomic parameters such as first ionization potential, at least up through Z equals 40. The isotopic composition of the cosmic ray source is found to be unlike that of the solar system.

Beschreibung: The instrumentation and results from the Heavy Nuclei experiment on the HEAO 3 satellite are described. Six independently analyzed dual-gap ionization chambers measured the energy loss of the cosmic rays while a Cerenkov counter with 8 independently analyzed photomultipliers viewed two sheets of Pilot 425 plastic in a white box. Trajectories of the cosmic ray nuclei were determined in multiwire ionization hodoscopes. Variations in abundances were observed to be imperfectly ordered in terms of the first ionization potential, and volatility was also ruled out as the controlling factor. A predicted drop in abundance after Ba-56 was found, along with another sharp fall above Pb-82. Only one actinide-type event was detected during the 14 mos of viewing, a result consistent with other findings but which testifies against r-process formation.

Beschreibung: Results from the cosmic ray isotope experiment on board the HEAO 3 satellite are reviewed, noting their impact on astrophysics. The gamma ray telescope comprised 5 Cerenkov detectors and a flash tube hodoscope with 4 trays, and collected data on 7 million events in the energy range 0.7-20 GeV/nucleon during the 1.6 yr mission duration. Three ranges of momentum were detected, and it was found that the ratios of secondary to primary species decreased steeply with increasing energy. A progressive steepening of the energy dependence of abundance ratios from Al/Si and K/Fe was observed, which has been interpreted as a progressive decrease of the amount of primary component from Al to Na and K. The secondary to primary ratios are accounted for with an exponential pathlength distribution from Fe down to Na and N. Comparisons are made of elemental abundances in cosmic ray sources, the local galactic environment, and the solar energetic particle composition. The data is noted to be compatible with a model of an injection of cosmic ray particles by stellar flares in a two-stage acceleration process.

Beschreibung: Large arrays of CR-39 plastic track detectors are being used at various depths in the atmosphere to study energetic, highly ionizing particles. The first measurements are made of the energy spectra of He and Li nuclei at mountain altitude (603 g/sq cm) and the first observations of relativistic heavy nuclei (Z/beta greater than or equal to 12; Z ranging from 8 to 14) at subsonic aircraft altitude (186 g/sq cm). A 95 percent CL upper limit of 0.4/sq m-yr was determined for the flux at 603 g/sq cm of particles with Z/beta greater than or equal to 30 and of monopoles with velocity as low as 0.01 c.

Beschreibung: The analysis of the interactions of heavy cosmic ray nuclei in nuclear emulsion exposed over Texas is continued, with 500 interactions of nuclei of E greater than 1.5 GeV/nucleon added. In this paper the experimental data correlating meson production with fragmentation of the projectile and target nuclei are given. These data, combined with earlier results, are also used to reexamine the problem of the mean free path of secondary fragments. Using the same techniques of analysis used for the accelerator ions, evidence is found for anomalously short mean free paths of secondary fragments in the first centimeter after production.

Beschreibung: Upstream 50-200 keV proton events were observed simultaneously by the low energy proton detectors on ISEE-3 and IMP-8, and the gradient from the spin averaged fluxes at the two spacecraft was calculated. The dependence of that gradient upon the angular distributions at IMP-8 was investigated as well as the distance from IMP-8 to the bow shock. The pitch angle distributions are narrow at ISEE-3 and wide and often pancake-shaped at IMP-8 with a peak near 90 degrees. This implies the existence of a weak scattering region about 5-15 earth radii upstream of the earth's bow shock.

Beschreibung: The present investigation represents a summary of a comprehensive analysis of the same subject conducted by Roelof et al. (1981). It is pointed out that the tandem earth-Jupiter trajectories of the Voyager 1/2 spacecraft, combined with baseline measurements from the earth-orbiting IMP 7/8 spacecraft, provide the first opportunity for unambiguously separating latitude from radial or field-aligned effects in galactic cosmic ray gradients. Attention is given to the method of data analysis, and the separation of field-aligned and latitudinal gradients. It is found that latitudinal gradients approximately equal to or greater than 1 percent per deg in the cosmic ray intensity were a common feature of the interplanetary medium between 1 and 5 AU in 1977-78. Except in the most disturbed periods, cosmic ray intensities are well-ordered in field-aligned structures.
