Description: A selection has been made of methods, devices, and techniques developed in the field of photography during implementation of space and nuclear research projects. These items include many adaptations, variations, and modifications to standard hardware and practice, and should prove interesting to both amateur and professional photographers and photographic technicians. This compilation is divided into two sections. The first section presents techniques and devices that have been found useful in making photolab work simpler, more productive, and higher in quality. Section two deals with modifications to and special applications for existing photographic equipment.

Description: Various devices and techniques are described for testing hardware and components in four special environments: low temperature, high temperature, high pressure, and vibration. Items ranging from an automatic calibrator for pressure transducers to a fixture for testing the susceptibility of materials to ignition by electric spark are included.

Description: A wide variety of the natural resources of earth and man's management of them will be studied by an initial group of foreign and domestic scientists tentatively chosen by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to analyze data to be gathered by two earth-orbiting spacecraft. The spacecraft are the first Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-A) and the manned Skylab which will carry an Earth Resources Experiment Package (EREP). In the United States, the initial experiments will study the feasibility of remote sensing from a satellite in gathering information on ecological problems. The objective of both ERTS and EREP aboard Skylab is to obtain multispectral images of the surface of the earth with high resolution remote sensors and to process and distribute the images to scientific users in a wide variety of disciplines. The ERTS-A, EREP, and Skylab systems are described and their operation is discussed.

Description: The function of the altimeter is to provide precise measurements of Apollo vehicle height above known positions on the lunar surface. A short duration light pulse from the laser is directed through a telescope in a narrow beam to the lunar surface. A portion of the light is reflected by the moon back to the altimeter where it is intercepted by a receiving telescope and relayed to a detector. The time from the moment when the light pulse leaves the laser until its return, which is measured with the aid of a quartz crystal controlled clock oscillator, is a measure for the altitude.

Description: High energy astrophysical observations will be conducted primarily from the Small Astronomy Satellites (SAS) and the High Energy Astronomy Observatories (HEAO). The first satellite (SAS A) will carry a set of collimated proportional counters to conduct a high sensitivity, high spatial resolution, all sky survey for X-ray sources. The objective of SAS B will be to search for celestial gamma-ray sources and regions and to measure the flux and energy spectrum of any sources located. A wire grid digitized spark chamber will be the prime detection instrument. The instrumentation of SAS C will consist of modulation collimators, slot collimators, and proportional counters.
