Description: Estimates of Last Glacial Maximum annual mean seawater temperatures at 50 m depth. The temperature estimates are derived using the Modern Analogue Technique using the ForCenS synthesis (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.873570; https://doi.org/10.1038/sdata.2017.109) and World Ocean Atlas 1998 temperature (http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/oc5/woa98.html) for calibration. Dissimilarity to the core top data was calculated using the square-chord distance and the temperatures are the weighted averages of the 10 closest analogues. Estimates were averaged for sites where more than a single sample is available. The data contain a unique ID for each site, a core name, longitude and latitude, temperature in degree Celsius, the temperature anomaly with respect to the World Ocean Atlas climatology, an estimate of species turnover with respect to the nearest core top sample (Bray-Curtis dissimilarity), the number of data points and the uncertainty of the temperature estimate. This uncertainty considers spatial autocorrelation in the training set. It is reduced by the square root of n whenever multiple samples were available for a site.

Description: The δ13C composition of Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi and other Cibicidoides spp is an important tool to reconstruct past changes in the deep ocean carbon cycle. The species are expected to match the δ13C of ambient dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), although it has been recognised that substantial offsets can occur. I present a compilation of Late Holocene δ13C and δ18O data for named Cibicidoides species in combination with fully resolved carbonate chemistry at each core location, with the aim to test if variation in isotope composition is related to ambient carbonate saturation. Stable isotope data were pre-screened to remove sections with mixed glacial-Holocene Cibicidoides specimens. The resultant database contains δ13C and δ18O data for C. wuellerstorfi from 252 globally distributed core localities and 29 localities for other named Cibicidoides species. Oceanographic data were compiled from published 1° x 1° gridded data sets, including a global reconstruction of pre-industrial δ13C-DIC and δ18O of ocean water. The expected carbonate δ18O was calculated using an empirical temperature equation for inorganic calcite. Concentrations of dissolved carbonate species and saturation state were calculated as a function of depth, salinity, and temperature.

Description: This dataset includes the analyses of major elements (except Si), trace, and rare earth element concentrations of marine sediment samples collected with a multi-corer during CDisK-IV cruise. Samples were prepared and analyzed by Peter W. Crockford and Ann G. Dunlea at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). In trace-metal clean labs, samples were cooked in a heated acid cocktail (HNO3, HCl, HF) with later additions of H2O2 before being dried down and brought back up with HNO3 and H2O2 and diluted. Sample solutions were analyzed on a Thermo Fischer Scientific iCAP inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) in the WHOI Plasma Facility. Precision was determined by digesting two samples three times each. The average relative standard deviation of the two sets of triplicate analyses determined precision to be ~3%. The evaporation of HF causes loss of Si, so those concentrations are not reported.

Description: Fossil scleractinian corals were collected from the Galápagos platform in the East Equatorial Pacific (0°N, 90°E) on cruises MV1007 and NA064 from water depths between 419 and 650 m. Equatorial Atlantic corals (taxa Caryophyllia, Enallopsammia, Desmophyllum) were collected from a depth range of 749 to 2814 m during Cruise JC094 from Carter Seamount (9.2°N, 21.3°W), Knipovich Seamount (5.6°N, 26.9°W), Vema Fracture Zone (10.7°N, 44.6°W), Vayda Seamount (14.9°N, 48.2°W) and Gramberg Seamount (15.4°N, 51.1°W). Southern Ocean samples were obtained from Burdwood Bank (54.7°S, 62.2°W; taxa Caryophyllia, Balanophyllia, Flabellum, Desmophyllum) and Cape Horn (57.2°S, 67.1°W; taxa Caryophyllia, Balanophyllia, Flabellum) in the Subantarctic Zone and the Sars and Interim Seamounts in the Polar Front Zone (59.7°S, 68.8°W and 60.6°S, 66.0°W; taxa Caryophyllia, Desmophyllum) on cruises NBP0805 and NBP1103 in the Drake Passage. These proximal Sars and Interim sites are grouped as simply "Sars". The shallowest coral samples come from depths of 334 m on Burdwood Bank however the majority are from 700 to 1520 m, at water depths corresponding to modern Antarctic Intermediate Water. Corals recovered from the depth of 1012 m from Cape Horn and further south from Sars Seamount at depths of 695 to 1200 m are currently bathed in Upper Circumpolar Deep Water. Deeper samples at the Sars Seamount site sit within Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (1300 to 1750 m). We use published U-series dates for all samples (Burke and Robinson, 2012; Chen et al., 2020; Chen et al., 2015; Li et al., 2020; Margolin et al., 2014; Stewart et al., 2021). Reported age uncertainties are typically ±1% (2 SD). Whole "S1" septa and attached theca were taken from cup corals while whole calyxes were taken from branching specimens using a rotary cutting tool. This tool was further used to remove surficial oxide coatings and any chalky altered carbonate. Where sufficient sample material allowed, multiple sub-samples were measured to minimize microstructural bias (typically duplicates). Coral fragments were crushed and cleaned using warm 1% H2O2 (buffered in NH4OH) oxidative cleaning and a weak acid polish (0.0005 M HNO3). Samples were dissolved in 0.5 M HNO3 and analysed by ICP-MS to yield Li/Mg ratios. Repeat analysis of NIST RM 8301 (Coral) (n=19) yielded analytical precision of 〈± 1.5%. Coral Li/Mg was converted to temperature using a calibration applicable to all aragonitic corals (Li/Mg = 5.42 exp(−0.050×T(°C)); (Stewart et al., 2020). The quoted uncertainty on this calibration based on prediction intervals is ± 1.7 °C (1σ). This uncertainty is significantly reduced however at extremely low temperatures close to the freezing point of seawater (~ −2 °C). Corals could not survive in frozen seawater, therefore, where proxy estimated temperature falls below this minimum a value of −2 °C is reported instead. For Li/Mg averages of each coral sample and conversion to bottom water temperature, see the xlsx version of the dataset under Further details.

Description: Compiled marine radiocarbon data from the global ocean, derived from planktonic/benthic foraminifera and corals, spanning the last deglaciation, with associated calendar ages that are independently derived and/or are consistent with the Marine20 radiocarbon calibration curve. The data have been screened and include data flags pertaining to anomalous values (e.g. negative offsets relative to the contemporary atmosphere), low sedimentation rates 〈2 cm/kyr, and/or deviations from dominant regional-temporal trends. The data are further grouped by ocean basin, and according to their associated calendar ages as belonging to a succession of time slices across the last deglaciation: the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1), the Bolling-Allerod (BA), the Younger Dryas, the Early Holocene (7-11ka BP), and the late Holocene (〈6 ka BP).

Description: The dataset submitted provides a photo documentation on the preservation status of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma shells in sediments of two Arctic sediment cores (PS72/413-3 and PS2185-6). In the accompanying paper different preservation indices (PI_1-3) were introduced to describe the progressive diagenetic alteration from 1 to 3, and the documentation helps to understand how the shells were assigned to the different categories. The data set also serves as a guide for future shell-based work, showing differences between biologically precipitated shell and authigenic overgrowth. This dataset is the first comprehensive documentation that illustrates diagenitic calcite on N. pachyderma shells and as isolated sedimentary crystals at none-seepage sites in the Arctic. Furthermore, the shells and crystals that were used for radiocarbon dating and isotope analyses as shown in the accompanying paper are illustrated in respective documentary files.

Description: This dataset contains a compilation of planktic foraminiferal d18O from sediment cores spanning the last deglaciation in the Southern Ocean. The compilation includes 4610 data points from 64 individual records. The dataset includes the original reference for the data, the name of the sediment core, the latitude (°N), longitude (°E), and water depth (m) at which the sediment core was taken, the sediment depth at which the d18O analysis was conducted (cm), the age of the sediment at which the d18O analysis was conducted (ka, using the age model given in the original publication), the foraminiferal species on which the d18O analysis was conducted, the measured d18O value (VPDB). The sediment cores in the compilation span 20 – 70°S across the Southern Ocean. The individual d18O records cover the last 30 ka. The d18O data were measured on N. pachyderma (np), G. bulloides (gb), and G. ruber (gr).
