    Beschreibung: A radiometric measuring system is described for observing solar activity, atmospheric attenuation, and atmospheric emission. Two highly directional microwave antennas are mounted side by-side on an equatorial mount which tracks the sun. One antenna is aimed directly at the sun to provide a sun temperature, and the other antenna is aimed at a slight angle to the sun antenna to provide a sky temperature reference. Signals from the two antennas are compared in a radiometric detecting system and provide information concerning solar activity and atmospheric attenuation and emission.

    System for indicating direction of intruder aircraft (1973)

    Beschreibung: A pilot warning indicator system consisting of a flashing beacon, a detector, and an indicating panel is described. The detector responds to radiant energy from another aircraft's beacon by energizing particular signal lamps positioned in the periphery of the pilot's normal field of view. Since the positions of the energized lamps are related to the direction from which radiant energy is received by the detector, the pilot is apprised of the relative position of an intruder aircraft without any shift in visual fixation.

The display comprises a moving line or raster, on a cathode ray tube, which is disposed intermediate of two columns of lamps or intensifications on the cathode ray tube. The raster and lights are controlled in such a manner that pairs of lights define a line which is either tracked or chased by the raster in accordance with the relationship between the optimum and actual values of a monitored parameter.

    Laser altimeter for Apollo lunar orbit. (1971)

    Beschreibung: The function of the altimeter is to provide precise measurements of Apollo vehicle height above known positions on the lunar surface. A short duration light pulse from the laser is directed through a telescope in a narrow beam to the lunar surface. A portion of the light is reflected by the moon back to the altimeter where it is intercepted by a receiving telescope and relayed to a detector. The time from the moment when the light pulse leaves the laser until its return, which is measured with the aid of a quartz crystal controlled clock oscillator, is a measure for the altitude.

    Beschreibung: High energy astrophysical observations will be conducted primarily from the Small Astronomy Satellites (SAS) and the High Energy Astronomy Observatories (HEAO). The first satellite (SAS A) will carry a set of collimated proportional counters to conduct a high sensitivity, high spatial resolution, all sky survey for X-ray sources. The objective of SAS B will be to search for celestial gamma-ray sources and regions and to measure the flux and energy spectrum of any sources located. A wire grid digitized spark chamber will be the prime detection instrument. The instrumentation of SAS C will consist of modulation collimators, slot collimators, and proportional counters.

    Application of an electronic image analyzer to dimensional measurements from neutron radiographs (1973)

    Beschreibung: Means of obtaining improved dimensional measurements from neutron radiographs of nuclear fuel elements are discussed. The use of video-electronic image analysis relative to edge definition in radiographic images is described. Based on this study, an edge definition criterion is proposed for overcoming image unsharpness effects in taking accurate diametral measurements from radiographs. An electronic density slicing method for automatic edge definition is described. Results of measurements made with video micrometry are compared with scanning microdensitometer and micrometric physical measurements. An image quality indicator for estimating photographic and geometric unsharpness is described.
