Mit ihren gewaltigen Wassermassen und Strömungen bestimmen sie maßgeblich in Wechselwirkung mit der Atmosphäre das Klima der Erde. Ohne die Meere wäre die Erdgeschichte ganz anders verlaufen. Selbst die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung Europas ist dem Wärmetransport des Nordatlantischen Strömungssystems zu verdanken. Seit Beginn der Industrialisierung verändert der Mensch durch den Verbrauch fossiler Energieträger die chemische Zusammensetzung der Atmosphäre und verstärkt damit den natürlichen Treibhauseffekt, was eine Erwärmung der unteren Atmosphäre und der Erdoberfläche einschließlich des oberen Ozeans zur Folge hat. Dies führt zur Schrumpfung der Fläche des arktischen Meereises, was die globale Erderwärmung weiter verstärkt, da sich die Erdalbedo verringert. Die Gletscher schmelzen. Das Schmelzwasser und die Ausdehnung des Meerwassers aufgrund der Erwärmung führen zum Meeresspiegelanstieg, der gefährliche Höhe erreichen wird, wenn Klimaschutz nicht konsequent betrieben wird. Fast ein Drittel der Weltbevölkerung lebt in Küstennähe und viele müssten in der Zukunft weichen, wenn die CO2-Emission nicht gemindert wird. Nicht nur große Teile der Niederlande, sondern auch weite Teile der deutschen Küste würden bei Stürmen unter Wasser geraten, wären da nicht die nach und nach zu Bollwerken mutierten Seedeiche und die Sperrwerke an den Flüssen. Ungleich gefährdeter sind da die Bewohner tropischer, von Wirbelstürmen heimgesuchter Küsten, die ohne Deich den Fluten ausgeliefert sind. Durch die Aufnahme des CO2 sinkt der pH-Wert des Meerwassers, was für viele Meeresorganismen - vor allem die Kalk bildenden Tiere - wie Korallen, Muscheln und viele Planktonalgen schädlich ist. Mit diesen und anderen Folgen für Pflanzen, Tiere und Menschen befassen sich rund 100 Experten im vorliegenden Buch. Die Beiträge sind leicht verständlich geschrieben.
