Description / Table of Contents: Chapter 1 Introduction -- Chapter 2 Unconventional functions of transcription factors -- GAGA transcription factor -- Heterochromatin protein 1 -- Retinoblastoma protein -- STAT -- ATF-2 -- NF-kB -- Chapter 3 STAT and HP1, in their unconventional roles, promote longevity and protect against DNA damage and cancer -- STAT and HP1 promote longevity -- STAT and HP1 protect against DNA damage -- Increased levels of STAT and HP1 hinder carcinogenesis in a mouse xenograft model -- Chapter 4 The possible biological significance of transcription factors’ unconventional functions -- The epigenome -- Processes in the cell nucleus -- Future Work.
Abstract: This SpringerBrief explores unconventional functions of eight different transcription factors and concludes with a discussion of their biological significance and impact, including effects on processes within the cell nucleaus during development and in adult organisms. Chapter One details unconventional functions of the transcription factors GAGA, HP1, Rb, STAT, ATF-2 and NF-kB. Surprisingly, all of these transcription factors can be found in association with heterochromatin as well as euchromatin, and in some cases unconventional functions have been demonstrated for these heterochromatin-associated factors. Chapter Two focuses on the unconventional functions of STAT and HP1 and discusses their roles in the promotion of longevity, and in protection from cancer and DNA damage. Chapter Three explores the biological significance of the findings presented in the first two chapters and considers how global changes in the epigenome brought about by factors such as STAT and HP1 might affect processes within the cell nucleus during development and in adult organisms. This succinct yet thorough SpringerBrief is essential for researchers studying epigenetics, and to instructors of the subject. It should also appeal to people interested in the control of gene transcription and other processes in the cell nucleus, and to those interested in development.

Abstract: Under the name of Frontotemporal Dementias (FTD) numerous hereditary and sporadic disorders are listed. FTD may take away speech and language, social skills and ethical judgement, wishes and will, empathy and emotions; it may also impair motor functions. FTD may affect men and women in midlife or during old age leading to the demolition of the uniqueness of the human mind. In the last decade of the 20th century and in the first two decades of the 21st century, progress in the understanding of clinical, neuropathological, biochemical, and genetic aspects of FTD has accelerated. The novel awareness about FTD has directed young generations of researchers toward the study of this complex group of disorders. This Volume has been formulated with the participation of some of the leading scientists who have contributed to the development of knowledge in the clinical and basic science arenas. It captures the current central elements that are relevant to an up-to-date understanding of causes and pathogenesis of multiple forms of FTD. The volume is an opus that represents a distillation of the work of many scientists and addresses the current directions in the study of one of the most complex groups of diseases. In view of its structure, the book could also be used as a textbook, that offers both a broad and deep analysis of major areas in FTD. This book, planned by the International Society for Frontotemporal Dementias, is distinctive as it opens a window to a wide landscape about the biology of FTD. Thus, the book represents a moment of reflection on the present state of our knowledge of FTD and a collective vision toward scientific progress. The authors of each chapter share their knowledge and vision aimed at reducing the suffering which is caused by FTD.

Abstract: This informative book discusses the latest research on the risk factors and therapeutics in dementia. WHO calls dementia a public health priority. Dementia manifests as a group of symptoms associated with decline in memory or other thinking skills and is severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. It occurs frequently among elderly people, but it is not necessarily part of the normal aging process. The book has been divided into two broad sections. The first section reviews the risk factors involved in developing dementia, including various medical conditions, lifestyle choices, as well as genetics. The latter section describes various therapeutic interventions in dementia. Although there is no known cure for dementia, this book underlines the current treatment strategies that could momentarily reduce the symptoms and improve the quality of life of the patients. This book highlights the global effort to find better ways to halt the progression of dementia and develop novel therapeutic strategies. The book would be an interesting read for advanced graduate students and researchers working in the field of neuroscience, genetics, and medicine. It will generate good interest to neurologists, psychiatrists, geriatricians, cardiologists, internal medicine practitioners, epidemiologist, and public health workers.

Abstract: This book discusses the different regulatory pathways for Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products implemented by national agencies in North and South America, Europe and Asia and by international bodies in the effort of international harmonization. This book represents an update of the first edition, as it covers regulatory novelties and accumulated experience in the regions already addressed. In addition, this new edition offers a wider international perspective: new chapters are included covering Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products regulations in India, Malaysia, Spain and Thailand, the European Pharmacopoeia texts for gene therapy medicinal products as well as international harmonization programs. Each chapter, authored by experts from various regulatory bodies throughout the international community, walks the reader through the applications of nonclinical research to translational clinical research to licensure and therapeutic use of these innovative products. More specifically, each chapter offers insights into fundamental considerations that are essential for developers of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products in the areas of product quality, pharmacology and toxicology, clinical trial design and HTA pathways, as well as pertinent ‘must-know’ guidelines and regulations. Regulatory Aspects of Gene Therapy and Cell Therapy Products: a Global Perspective is part of the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy sub-series of the highly successful Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology series. It is essential reading for graduate students, clinicians, and researchers interested in gene and cell therapy and the regulation of pharmaceuticals.

This book reviews the emerging role of microRNAs in cerebral ischemia, providing comprehensive details of the links between this small RNA molecule and ischemic stroke, the more prevalent of the two main types of stroke. The chapters address questions relating to microRNA’s function in various pathological features of stroke, like oxidative stress, excitotoxicity and cell death, as well as its role as a biomarker and diagnostic agent, and the current therapeutic interventions. Further, the book highlights the latest research on how miRNAs contribute to neuroregeneration following stroke, discussing the myriad computational tools and databases used in miRNA research, and decsribes how how miRNA modulates other cerebrovascular diseases. The book concludes with fresh insights into the effect of long non-coding RNA in cerebral ischemia.
