    Abstract: The pace of change in academia is ever increasing, which makes it difficult for anyone to stay up to date with what may be the right long-term strategy, or even the next step in mastering a PhD or to secure a fruitful academic career. Academic mentoring has proved to be helpful to many young researchers in difficult situations and mentoring programmes have been launched at many universities. In its most basic meaning, mentoring is a goal-oriented off-line conversation between a more experienced (mentor) and a less experienced (mentee) person with the objective to empower the mentee to make important work-related decisions. The first chapter of the book offers an introduction to academic mentoring and provides an overview of what academic mentoring entails. In the following chapters, important topics are discussed that may come up in mentoring conversations. These include scientific thinking, doctoral studies, behaviour and disappointments, scientific storytelling, teaching, scientific presentations, early career years, research cooperation, job applications and basic data management. The discussions in each of these chapters were designed with a view to provide food for thought and to invite self-reflection as well as continued discussions with peers and mentors. The book is written in a highly accessible style whilst restricting each chapter to the most essential information so that reading them can be accommodated in any busy schedule. It is not limited to any particular university or geographic region, since the author has worked in a number of different countries and encountered many different academic cultures. The text is also a useful handbook and reference to go with mentoring programmes.

    Abstract: Whatever are your beliefs, background, education, political views or interests, one thing is sure: this book will engage you, teach you something new, and more importantly make you to re-think deeply about critical aspects of your daily-life, including sex, love, food, physical activities, diseases, work and stress, and how you see and deal with other people, other animals, and the planet in general. Indeed, it focuses on topics that have fascinated people from all places and historical periods since times immemorial: Why are we here? What is the meaning of life? Are we progressing, and will we thrive?     Abstract: National Science Foundation (NSF) is a unique federal agency because it supports scientific research financially, but does not engage in scientific work itself. Its history is known only in part because the NSF is a vibrant, expanding, and living entity that makes the final telling of its story impossible.     Abstract: This edited volume is a compilation of 30 articles discussing what constitutes food for health and longevity. The aim is to provide up-to-date information, insights, and future tendencies in the ongoing scientific research about nutritional components, food habits and dietary patterns in different cultures. The health-sustaining and health-promoting effects of food are certainly founded in its overall composition of macronutrients and micronutrients.     Abstract: Social and natural science knowledge can help us understand, evaluate, and intervene in the world, e.g., for the continuation of cultural heritage, for positively influencing land use, and for societal (notably sustainable) development, as shown in the twenty-four research studies in this book (about territory in multiple countries). Knowledge useful for sustaining cultural heritage linked with land use, and promoting development, may include contemporary science, or may be more traditional and informal knowledge. Knowledge may be primarily practical, (sometimes business-related, sometimes technological, part of local customs, household-centered, etc.) Knowledge may be displayed in traditional preparation of food, or in traditional farming and cattle-breeding; or in advanced genetics. These twenty-four research studies communicate knowledge useful for commerce, governance, science, and cultural exchange. Worldwide, but also at local and regional levels, cultural heritage is closely associated with land use (e.g., rural and, increasingly, urban culture and land). Changes need to be studied historically, to appreciate past and present, and to reach actively for a better future (which conserves some values rooted in the past). Food and drink, travel and tourism, cities (modest or expansive), country-sides, landscapes (agricultural, forested, urban, or other), vividly experienced, can fascinate and delight. Through attention to cultural heritage, humans can compare and contrast very different, even very distant locales, motivating both pilgrimages far away from home, and love of one’s own more nearby surroundings, our homelands, or neighboring places. But societal development may also generate unease about possible dangers to, and losses of valuable aspects of cultural heritage, dangers and losses about land quality, and associated phenomena of innumerable sorts: wars, cultural decline, food insecurity, and so on. Such factors also figure in the analyses in this book.
