    Description: Although catchment storage is an intrinsic control on the rainfall-runoff response of streams, direct measurement remains a major challenge. Coupled models that integrate long-term hydrometric and isotope tracer data are useful tools that can provide insights into the dynamics of catchment storage and the volumes of water involved. In this study, we use a tracer-aided hydrological model to characterize catchment storage as a dynamic control on system function related to streamflow generation, which also allows direct estimation of the non-stationarity of water ages. We show that in a wet Scottish upland catchment dominated by runoff generation from riparian peats (histosols) with high water storage, non-stationarity in water age distributions are only clearly detectable during more extreme wet and dry periods. This is explained by the frequency and longevity of hydrological connectivity and the associated relative importance of flow paths contributing younger or older waters to the stream. Generally, these saturated riparian soils represent large mixing zones that buffer the time variance of water age and integrate catchment-scale partial mixing processes. Although storage simulations depend on model performance, which is influenced by input variability and the degree of isotopic damping in the stream, a longer-term storage analysis of this model indicates a system which is only sensitive to more extreme hydroclimatic variability.     Description: We demonstrate enhanced hydrogen generation rates at high pH using colloidal cadmium sulphide nanorods decorated with Pt nanoparticles. We introduce a simplified procedure for the decoration and subsequent hydrogen generation, reducing both the number of working steps and the materials costs. Different Pt precursor concentrations were tested to reveal the optimal conditions for the efficient hydrogen evolution. A sharp increase in hydrogen evolution rates was measured at pH 13 and above, a condition at which the surface charge transfer was efficiently mediated by the formation of hydroxyl radicals and further consumption by the sacrificial triethanolamine hole scavenger.

    Description: We give an algorithm which produces a unique element of the Clifford group on n qubits ( C n ) from an integer 0 ≤ i 〈 C n (the number of elements in the group). The algorithm involves O ( n 3 ) operations and provides, in addition to a canonical mapping from the integers to group elements g , a factorization of g into a sequence of at most 4 n symplectic transvections. The algorithm can be used to efficiently select random elements of C n which are often useful in quantum information theory and quantum computation. We also give an algorithm for the inverse map, indexing a group element in time O ( n 3 ).

    Description: ABSTRACT A reactive transport modeling framework is presented that allows simultaneous assessment of groundwater flow, water quality evolution including δ 13 C, and 14 C activity or “age”. Through application of this framework, simulated 14 C activities can be directly compared with measured 14 C activities. This bypasses the need for interpretation of a 14 C age prior to flow simulation through factoring out processes other than radioactive decay, which typically involves simplifying assumptions regarding spatial and temporal variability in reactions, flow, and mixing. The utility of the approach is demonstrated for an aquifer system with spatially variable carbonate mineral distribution, multiple organic carbon sources, and transient boundary conditions for 14 C activity in the recharge water. In this case the simulated 14 C age was shown to be relatively insensitive to isotopic fractionation during DOC oxidation and variations in assumed DOC degradation behaviour. We demonstrate that the model allows quantitative testing of hypotheses regarding controls on groundwater age and water quality evolution for all three carbon isotopes. The approach also facilitates incorporation of multiple environmental tracers and combination with parameter optimization techniques. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

    Description: Water scarcity is likely to increase in the coming years, making improvements in irrigation efficiency increasingly important. An emerging technology that promises to increase irrigation efficiency substantially is a wireless irrigation sensor network that uploads sensor data into irrigation management software, creating an integrated system that allows real-time monitoring and control of moisture status that has been shown in experimental settings to reduce irrigation costs, lower plant loss rates, shorten production times, decrease pesticide application, and increase yield, quality, and profit. We use an original survey to investigate likely initial acceptance, ceiling adoption rates, and profitability of this new sensor network technology in the nursery and greenhouse industry. We find that adoption rates for a base system and demand for expansion components are decreasing in price, as expected. The price elasticity of the probability of adoption suggests that sensor networks are likely to diffuse at a rate somewhat greater than that of drip irrigation. Adoption rates for a base system and demand for expansion components are increasing in specialization in ornamental production: Growers earning greater shares of revenue from greenhouse and nursery operations are willing to pay more for a base system and are willing to purchase larger numbers of expansion components at any given price. We estimate that growers who are willing to purchase a sensor network expect investment in this technology to generate significant profit, consistent with findings from experimental studies.     Description: Glass–ceramic tubes were developed from Bayan Obo tailings and fly ash by the centrifugal method. This paper investigates the corrosion rate of the glass–ceramics exposed to hydrochloric acid solution. The leaching concentration of cations into the solution is analyzed by ICP. XRD analysis and Raman spectra were used for identifying the phase transformation of corrosion reactions. The changes in morphological and chemical composition were investigated using SEM combined with EDS. The results revealed that the formed corrosion layer was amorphous phase. It was also indicated that Fe 2 O 3 and CaF 2 exerted some negative effect on the corrosion resistance in HCl solution.

    Description: In the present work, we redefine and generalize the action principle for dissipative systems proposed by Riewe by fixing the mathematical inconsistencies present in the original approach. In order to formulate a quadratic Lagrangian for non-conservative systems, the Lagrangian functions proposed depend on mixed integer order and fractional order derivatives. As examples, we formulate a quadratic Lagrangian for a particle under a frictional force proportional to the velocity and to the classical problem of an accelerated point charge.

    Description: We consider a very natural generalization of quantum theory by letting the dimension of the Bloch ball be not necessarily three. We analyze bipartite state spaces where each of the components has a d -dimensional Euclidean ball as state space. In addition to this, we impose two very natural assumptions: the continuity and reversibility of dynamics and the possibility of characterizing bipartite states by local measurements. We classify all these bipartite state spaces and prove that, except for the quantum two-qubit state space, none of them contains entangled states. Equivalently, in any of these non-quantum theories, interacting dynamics is impossible. This result reveals that “existence of entanglement” is the requirement with minimal logical content which singles out quantum theory from our family of theories.

    Description: A covariant algorithm for deriving the conserved quantities for natural Hamiltonian systems is combined with the non-relativistic framework of Eisenhart, and of Duval, in which the classical trajectories arise as geodesics in a higher dimensional space-time, realized by Brinkmann manifolds. Conserved quantities which are polynomial in the momenta can be built using time-dependent conformal Killing tensors with flux. The latter are associated with terms proportional to the Hamiltonian in the lower dimensional theory and with spectrum generating algebras for higher dimensional quantities of order 1 and 2 in the momenta. Illustrations of the general theory include the Runge-Lenz vector for planetary motion with a time-dependent gravitational constant G ( t ), motion in a time-dependent electromagnetic field of a certain form, quantum dots, the Hénon-Heiles and Holt systems, respectively, providing us with Killing tensors of rank that ranges from one to six.

    Description: Herein, we report on the crystal structures of Nb 2 AlC and TiNbAlC—actual composition (Ti 0.45 ,Nb 0.55 ) 2 AlC—compounds determined from Rietveld analysis of neutron diffraction patterns in the 300–1173 K temperature range. The average linear thermal expansion coefficients of a Nb 2 AlC sample in the a and c directions are, respectively, 7.9(5) × 10 −6 and 7.7(5) × 10 −6  K −1 on one neutron diffractometer and 7.3(3) × 10 −6 and 7.0(2) × 10 −6  K −1 on a second diffractometer. The respective values for the (Ti 0.45 ,Nb 0.55 ) 2 AlC composition—only tested on one diffractometer—are 8.5(3) × 10 −6 and 7.5(5) × 10 −6  K −1 . These values are relatively low compared to other MAX phases. Like other MAX phases, however, the atomic displacement parameters (APDs) show that the Al atoms vibrate with higher amplitudes than the Ti and C atoms, and more along the basal planes than normal to them. When the predictions of the APDs obtained from density functional theory are compared to the experimental results, good quantitative agreement is found for the Al atoms. In case of the Nb and C atoms, the agreement was more qualitative.

    Description: In this study, lithium disilicate (LS 2 ) glass samples with different particle sizes ranging from less than 105 to 850 μm were prepared. These specimens were inserted in a Pt-Rh DSC crucible and heated to 850°C at different rates (ϕ = 0.5–30 K/min) to identify their crystallization peaks. The activation energies for the overall crystallization ( E ) and the Avrami coefficient ( n ) were evaluated using different nonisothermal models. Specifically, n was evaluated using the Augis–Benett model and the Ozawa method, and E was evaluated using the Kissinger and Ligero methods. As expected, the coarse particles mainly crystallized in the volume, while surface crystallization was predominant in the samples with particle sizes of less than 350 μm. This result was confirmed through SEM analysis of the double stage heat-treated samples. In contrast with previous studies, our results demonstrated that the activation energy decreased as the particle size increased. In addition, no clear correlation between the peak intensity (δ T p ) and the particle size was observed.

    Description: Knots are commonly found in molecular chains such as DNA and proteins, and they have been considered to be useful models for structural analysis of these molecules. One interested quantity is the minimum number of monomers necessary to realize a molecular knot. The minimum lattice length Len( K ) of a knot K indicates the minimum length necessary to construct K in the cubic lattice. Another important quantity in physical knot theory is the ropelength which is one of the knot energies measuring the complexity of knot conformation. The minimum ropelength Rop( K ) is the minimum length of an ideally flexible rope necessary to tie a given knot K . Much effort has been invested in the research project for finding upper bounds on both quantities in terms of the minimum crossing number c ( K ) of the knot. It is known that Len( K ) and Rop( K ) lie between O ( c ( K ) 3 4 ) and O( c ( K )[ln ( c ( K ))] 5 ), but unknown yet whether any family of knots has superlinear growth. In this paper, we focus on 2-bridge knots and links. Linear growth upper bounds on the minimum lattice length and minimum ropelength for nontrivial 2-bridge knots or links are presented as Len( K ) ⩽ 8 c ( K ) + 2 and Rop( K ) ⩽ 11.39 c ( K ) + 12.37.

    Description: We construct a spectral triple for the C * -algebra of continuous functions on the space of p -adic integers by using a rooted tree obtained from coarse-grained approximation of the space, and the forward derivative on the tree. Additionally, we verify that our spectral triple satisfies the properties of a compact spectral metric space, and we show that the metric on the space of p -adic integers induced by the spectral triple is equivalent to the usual p -adic metric.

    Description: We consider the 3-body problem in 3-dimensional spaces of nonzero constant Gaussian curvature and study the relationship between the masses of the Lagrangian relative equilibria, which are orbits that form a rigidly rotating equilateral triangle at all times. There are three classes of Lagrangian relative equilibria in 3-dimensional spaces of constant nonzero curvature: positive elliptic and positive elliptic-elliptic, on 3-spheres, and negative elliptic, on hyperbolic 3-spheres. We prove that all these Lagrangian relative equilibria exist only for equal values of the masses.

    Description: Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is a candidate for on-site manufacturing as its characteristics of energy source and powder-based fabrication process are suitable for use with in situ material. The feasibility of using lunar regolith simulant to create objects with SLM process is investigated in this study. The process parameters are optimized and multiple objects are fabricated. A qualitative chemical analysis is carried out with scanning electron microscopy using energy-dispersive X-ray emission. Lastly, properties such as particle size distribution, particle shape, and crystal structure of the lunar simulant powder as well as the crystallinity and hardness of the fabricated objects are investigated.

    Description: This technical note presents a useful methodology for studying how the variance of hydraulic and/or reactive attributes of an aquifer are linked to the multi-scaled and hierarchical sedimentary architecture of the aquifer. A new recursive equation is derived which quantitatively describes how the variance is related to sedimentary facies defined at all scales across an entire stratal hierarchy. As compared to prior published equations that emphasize differences in means among facies populations within a hierarchical level, it emphasizes differences across levels. Because of the hierarchical relationships among the terms of the equation, we find it to be useful for conducting a holistic analysis of the relative contributions to the variance arising from all facies types defined across all scales. The methodology is demonstrated using appropriate field data, and is shown to be useful in defining parsimonious classification systems.

    Description: Recently, water-gated organic field-effect transistors (WGOFET) have been intensively studied for their application in the biological field. Surprisingly, a very limited number of conjugated polymers have been reported so far. Here, we systematically explore a series of polythiophene derivatives, presenting different alkyl side chains lengths and orientation, and characterized by various morphologies: comparative evaluation of their performances allows highlighting the critical role played by alkyl side chains, which significantly affects the polymer/water interface capacitance. Reported results provide useful guidelines towards further development of WGOFETs and represent a step forward in the understanding of the polymer/water interface phenomena.

    Description: Soft magnetic alloys at the nanoscale level have long generated a vivid interest as candidate materials for technological and biomedical purposes. Consequently, controlling the structure of bimetallic nanoparticles in order to optimize their magnetic properties, such as high magnetization and low coercivity, can significantly boost their potential for related applications. However, traditional synthesis methods stumble upon the long standing challenge of developing true nanoalloys with effective control over morphology and stability against oxidation. Herein, we report on a single-step approach to the gas phase synthesis of soft magnetic bimetallic iron aluminide nanoparticles, using a versatile co-sputter inert gas condensation technique. This method allowed for precise morphological control of the particles; they consisted of an alloy iron aluminide crystalline core (DO 3 phase) and an alumina shell, which reduced inter-particle interactions and also prevented further oxidation and segregation of the bimetallic core. Remarkably, the as-deposited alloy nanoparticles show interesting soft magnetic properties, in that they combine a high saturation magnetization (170 emu/g) and low coercivity (less than 20 Oe) at room temperature. Additional functionality is tenable by modifying the surface of the particles with a polymer, to ensure their good colloidal dispersion in aqueous environments.

    Description: Lattice resolved and quantitative compositional characterizations of the microstructure in TiCrAlN wear resistant coatings emerging at elevated temperatures are performed to address the spinodal decomposition into nanometer-sized coherent cubic TiCr- and Al-rich domains. The domains coarsen during annealing and at 1100 °C, the Al-rich domains include a metastable cubic Al(Cr)N phase containing 9 at. % Cr and a stable hexagonal AlN phase containing less than 1 at. % Cr. The cubic and the hexagonal phases form strained semi-coherent interfaces with each other.

    Description: ABSTRACT A primary concern for geologic carbon storage is the potential for leakage of stored carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into the shallow subsurface where it could degrade the quality of groundwater and surface water. In order to predict and mitigate the potentially negative impacts of CO 2 leakage, it is important to understand the physical processes that CO 2 will undergo as it moves through naturally heterogeneous porous media formations. Previous studies have shown that heterogeneity can enhance the evolution of gas phase CO 2 in some cases, but the conditions under which this occurs have not yet been quantitatively defined, nor tested through laboratory experiments. This study quantitatively investigates the effects of geologic heterogeneity on the process of gas phase CO 2 evolution in shallow aquifers through an extensive set of experiments conducted in a column that was packed with layers of various test sands. Soil moisture sensors were utilized to observe the formation of gas phase near the porous media interfaces. Results indicate that the conditions under which heterogeneity controls gas phase evolution can be successfully predicted through analysis of simple parameters, including the dissolved CO 2 concentration in the flowing water, the distance between the heterogeneity and the leakage location, and some fundamental properties of the porous media. Results also show that interfaces where a less permeable material overlies a more permeable material affect gas phase evolution more significantly than interfaces with the opposite layering.

    Description: Multi-indexed Jacobi polynomials are defined by the Wronskian of four types of eigenfunctions of the Pöschl-Teller Hamiltonian. We give a correspondence between multi-indexed Jacobi polynomials and pairs of Maya diagrams, and we show that any multi-indexed Jacobi polynomial is essentially equal to some multi-indexed Jacobi polynomial of two types of eigenfunction. As an application, we show a Wronskian-type formula of some special eigenstates of the deformed Pöschl-Teller Hamiltonian.

    Description: We present a novel derivation of both the Minkowski metric and Lorentz transformations from the consistent quantification of a causally ordered set of events with respect to an embedded observer. Unlike past derivations, which have relied on assumptions such as the existence of a 4-dimensional manifold, symmetries of space-time, or the constant speed of light, we demonstrate that these now familiar mathematics can be derived as the unique means to consistently quantify a network of events. This suggests that space-time need not be physical, but instead the mathematics of space and time emerges as the unique way in which an observer can consistently quantify events and their relationships to one another. The result is a potential foundation for emergent space-time.

The main aim of this paper is to provide new examples of braided T -category in the sense of Turaev [“Crossed group-categories,” Arabian J. Sci. Eng., Sect. C33(2C), 483–503 (2008)]. For this purpose, we first introduce a class of new categories MHYD H H ( A , B ) of ( A , B )-Yetter-Drinfeld Hom-modules with A , B ∈ A u t m H H ( H ) . Then we construct a category M H Y D ( H ) = { MHYD H H ( A , B ) } ( A , B ) ∈ G and show that such category forms a new braided T -category, generalizing the main constructions by Panaite and Staic [“Generalized (anti) Yetter-Drinfel'd modules as components of a braided T-category,” Isr. J. Math.158, 349–366 (2007)]. Finally, we compute an explicit new example of such braided T -categories.

    Description: The geometry of the Lie algebroid generalized tangent bundle of a generalized Lie algebroid is developed. Formulas of Ricci type and identities of Cartan and Bianchi type are presented. Introducing the notion of geodesic of a mechanical ρ , η -system with respect to a ( ρ , η )-spray, the Berwald ( ρ , η )-derivative operator, and its mixed curvature, we obtain main results to conceptualize the Weyl’s method in this general framework. Finally, we obtain two new results of Weyl type for the geometry of mechanical ρ , η -systems. In this way, it is proved that the projectively related sprays first have the same geodesics rather to an increasing parameter transformation and second their Berwald derivatives verify a respective relation.

    Description: Fluvial sediment loads are frequently calculated with rating curves fit to measured sediment transport rates. Rating curves are often treated as statistical representations in which the fitted parameters have little or no physical meaning. Such models, however, may produce large errors when extrapolation is needed, and they provide no insight into the sediment transport process. It is shown that log-linear least squares, the usual method for fitting rating curves, does not generally produce physically meaningful parameter values. In addition, it cannot accommodate data that include zero-transport samples. Alternative fitting methods based non-linear least squares and on maximum likelihood parameter estimation are described and evaluated. The maximum likelihood approach is shown to fit synthetic data better than linear or non-linear least squares, and to perform well with data that include zero-transport samples. In contrast, non-linear least squares methods produce large errors in the parameter estimates when zero-transport samples are present or when the variance structure of the data is incorrectly specified. Analyses with fractional bedload data from a mountain stream suggest that bedload transport rates are gamma distributed, that the arrivals of bedload particles in a sampler conform to a Poisson distribution, and that the variance of non-zero samples can be expressed as a power function of the mean. Preliminary physical interpretations of variations in the rating curve parameters fit to fractional bedload data with the maximum likelihood method are proposed, and their relation to some previous interpretations of rating curve parameters are briefly discussed.     Description: SrLn 2 Al 2 O 7 (Ln = La, Nd, Sm) ceramics belonging to Ruddlesden–Popper phase with n  =   2 in space group I 4 /mmm have been prepared by a standard solid-state reaction process. Their crystal structure refinement and infrared reflection spectra analysis have been carried out to investigate the correlations among the crystal structure, polar phonon modes, and microwave dielectric characteristics. Heavy deviations of cation–oxygen bonds in (Sr,Ln)O 12 , (Sr,Ln)O 9 , and AlO 6 polyhedra are observed, and the deviations significantly affect the microwave dielectric characteristics of the present ceramics. The polar phonon modes with lower frequencies due to translation vibration of Sr/La ions against the AlO 6 octahedron give the primary contribution to dielectric constant and intrinsic dielectric loss at microwave frequencies. The calculated Q  ×  f value is significantly larger than the measured one, and this result is very obvious for SrLa 2 Al 2 O 7 ceramics where the calculated one (130,300 GHz) is about 2 times of the measured one (68,800 GHz).

    Description: In this letter, 2-μm Pb 0.97 La 0.02 (Zr 0.75 Sn 0.18 Ti 0.07 )O 3 antiferroelectric thick film with tetragonal structure was prepared. The effects of operating electric field, temperature, and frequency on the thermal–electrical energy harvesting capacity of the film were studied by using the Olsen cycle. The results demonstrated that giant energy harvesting effect could be realized in the antiferroelectric thick film. The maximum harvestable energy density per cycle of the film was about 7.8 J/cm 3 at 1 kHz, which was the largest reported value to date. The corresponding energy harvesting efficiency was 0.53%. Moreover, the film had a low leakage current density (about 7.3 × 10 −7 and 3.9 × 10 −5  A/cm 2 at 25 and 200°C, respectively), which was favorable for its application in the devices of the thermal–electrical energy harvesting.

    Description: Discharged energy properties of PbO–SrO–Na 2 O–Nb 2 O 5 –SiO 2 glass-ceramics with crystallization time from 1 to 1000 min were investigated by measuring their hysteresis loops (described as quasi-static measuring method) and pulse-discharge current-time curves (described as dynamic measuring method). The results show the same trend for both measuring methods: With the increment of crystallization time, the discharged energy density increases gradually, while the energy efficiency decreases. The highest energy efficiencies were obtained in the sample with crystallization time of 1 min, which are 96.3% and 82.4%, corresponding quasi-static and dynamic measurement, respectively. The reduction of energy efficiency with crystallization time is attributed to combined effect of ferroelectric polarization and interfacial polarization, and part of the corresponding energy could not release in the pulse-discharge process.

    Description: The Pöschl-Teller (PT) potential occupies a privileged place among the anharmonic oscillator potentials due to its applications from quantum mechanics to diatomic molecules. For this potential, a polynomial su (1, 1) algebra has been constructed previously. So far, the coherent states (CSs) associated with this algebra have never appeared. In this paper, we construct the coherent states of the Barut-Girardello coherent states (BG-CSs) type for the PT potentials, which have received less attention in the scientific literature. We obtain these CSs and demonstrate that they fulfil all conditions required by the coherent state. The Mandel parameter for the pure BG-CSs and Husimi’s and P-quasi distributions (for the mixed-thermal states) is also presented. Finally, the exponential form of the BG-CSs for the PT potential has been presented and enabled us to build Perelomov type CSs for the PT potential. We point out that the BG-CSs and the Perelomov type coherent states (PCSs) are related via Laplace transform.

    Description: We reformulate dimensional regularization as a regularization method in position space and show that it can be used to give a closed expression for the renormalized time-ordered products as solutions to the induction scheme of Epstein-Glaser. This closed expression, which we call the Epstein-Glaser Forest Formula, is analogous to Zimmermann’s Forest Formula for BPH renormalization. For scalar fields, the resulting renormalization method is always applicable, we compute several examples. We also analyze the Hopf algebraic aspects of the combinatorics. Our starting point is the Main Theorem of Renormalization of Stora and Popineau and the arising renormalization group as originally defined by Stückelberg and Petermann.

    Description: This work is motivated by a quite general question: Under which circumstances are the capacities of information transmission systems continuous? The research is explicitly carried out on finite arbitrarily varying quantum channels (AVQCs). We give an explicit example that answers the recent question whether the transmission of messages over AVQCs can benefit from assistance by distribution of randomness between the legitimate sender and receiver in the affirmative. The specific class of channels introduced in that example is then extended to show that the unassisted capacity does have discontinuity points, while it is known that the randomness-assisted capacity is always continuous in the channel. We characterize the discontinuity points and prove that the unassisted capacity is always continuous around its positivity points. After having established shared randomness as an important resource, we quantify the interplay between the distribution of finite amounts of randomness between the legitimate sender and receiver, the (nonzero) probability of a decoding error with respect to the average error criterion and the number of messages that can be sent over a finite number of channel uses. We relate our results to the entanglement transmission capacities of finite AVQCs, where the role of shared randomness is not yet well understood, and give a new sufficient criterion for the entanglement transmission capacity with randomness assistance to vanish.

    Description: Nanocrystals of Mg-MOF-74 have been immobilized into the mesopores of SBA-15 rods to fabricate Mg-MOF-74@SBA-15 hybrid materials. To furnish such composites, a relatively simple synthetic strategy has been adopted by direct dispersion of the metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors in SBA-15 matrix to prepare the hybrid materials in situ . The hybrid materials have been characterized using powder X-ray diffraction and several spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, which suggest growth of the MOF nanocrystals inside the SBA-15 mesopores and the composites exhibit characteristics of both the components. N 2 adsorption isotherms at 77 K reveal that the composites contain additional mesopores, compared to only micropores of pristine MOF nanocrystals. In addition to such combination of both micro and mesoporosity, the composites also demonstrate significant CO 2 adsorption at room temperature.

    Description: Transition metal ion-chelating ordered mesoporous carbon (TM-OMC) materials were recently shown to be efficient polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) catalysts. The structure and properties of these catalysts are largely different from conventional catalyst materials, thus rendering membrane electrode assembly (MEA) preparation parameters developed for conventional catalysts not useful for applications of TM-OMC catalysts. This necessitates development of a methodology to incorporate TM-OMC catalysts in the MEA. Here, an efficient method for MEA preparation using TM-OMC catalyst materials for PEMFC is developed including effects of catalyst/ionomer loading and catalyst/ionomer-mixing and application procedures. An optimized protocol for MEA preparation using TM-OMC catalysts is described.

    Description: A Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 TiO 3 –ZnO–B 2 O 3 composite ink was prepared and used for the manufacturing of fully inkjet-printed metal-insulator-metal varactors. The dielectric thick films were co-fired with printed silver electrodes at 850°C and show a fine grained microstructure. The films have a relative permittivity of ε r  = 129 and a dielectric loss of tan δ = 0.043 at f  =   3 GHz. Printed varactors with different dielectric film thickness were prepared. The characterization of the printed structures and 3D electromagnetic simulations of the layout reveal the strong influence of electrode inductance and fringing effects on the properties of the components. The printed varactors reach tunabilities between 14.4% and 16.4% by applying a tuning field of 5 V/μm. To demonstrate the capability of the inkjet printing process for the preparation of tunable microwave devices, a fully inkjet-printed phase shifter was fabricated. It is based on seven pairs of the printed varactors and reaches a phase shift of 180° and a figure of merit of 19°/dB at 3.4 GHz.

    Description: New lead-free perovskite solid solution ceramics of (1  − x )( Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 ) TiO 3 – x Ba ( Ni 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) O 3 [(1− x )BNT– x BNN, x  =   0.02–0.06) were prepared and their dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and electromechanical properties were investigated as a function of the BNN content. The X-ray diffraction results indicated that the addition of BNN has induced a morphotropic phase transformation from rhombohedral to pseudocubic symmetry approximately at x  =   0.045, accompanying an evolution of dielectric relaxor behavior as characterized by enhanced dielectric diffuseness and frequency dispersion. In the proximity of the ferroelectric rhombohedral and pseudocubic phase coexistence zone, the x  =   0.045 ceramics exhibited optimal piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling properties of d 33 ~121 pC/N and k p ~0.27 owing to decreased energy barriers for polarization switching. However, further addition of BNN could cause a decrease in freezing temperatures of polar nanoregions till the coexistence of nonergodic and ergodic relaxor phases occurred near room temperature, especially for the x  =   0.05 sample which has negligible negative strains and thus show the maximum electrostrain of 0.3% under an external electric field of 7 kV/mm, but almost vanished piezoelectric properties. This was attributed to the fact that the induced long-range ferroelectric order could reversibly switch back to its original ergodic state upon removal of external electric fields.

    Description: Light transmission in polycrystalline magnesium fluoride was studied as a function of the mean grain size at different wavelengths. The mean grain size was varied by annealing hot-pressed billets in argon atmosphere at temperatures ranging from 600°C to 800°C for 1 h. The grain-size and grain-orientation distributions were characterized by electron back scatter diffraction. The scattering coefficients were calculated from the in-line transmittance measured at various wavelengths. The scattering coefficient of polycrystalline magnesium fluoride increased linearly with the mean grain size and inversely with the square of the wavelength of light. It is shown that these trends are consistent with theoretical models based on both a limiting form of the Raleigh–Gans–Debye (RGD) theory of particle scattering and light retardation theories that take refractive index variations along the light path. Quantitative predictions of the theories are, however, subject to uncertainly due to the restrictive assumptions made in the theories and difficulties in representing the microstructure in the theoretical models. In particular, grain-size distribution has a significant influence on the scattering coefficient calculated using particle scattering models.

    Description: Determining the absolute chronology of ceramic artifacts has significant implications for archeological and historical research. Wilson, Hall et al . recently suggested a new technique for direct absolute dating of archeological ceramics based on a moisture-induced chemical reaction, called rehydroxylation (RHX) dating. RHX dating proceeds by measuring the mass of chemically combined water in the ceramics in the form of OH hydroxyls, and the mass gain rate at the Effective Lifetime Temperature (ELT) that the ceramics experienced over its lifetime. To date, ELT determinations have been based on estimates of the ceramic's lifetime temperature history; taking into account weather and climate data and the depth at which the artifact was found. The uncertainty in determining the ELT can be a major component of the overall dating uncertainty. Here, we propose an alternative method which relies minimally on weather and climate data, and provides more precise determinations of the ELT and the ceramic age . The proposed method (SAS: Same Age Samples) involves a minimum of four measurements of the RHX mass gain rate constant for two ceramic samples of the same age at two temperatures. We show via simulations that the proposed SAS method can determine the ELT with a precision of 0.2 K which is comparable to the best ELT determination based on lifetime temperature history, and also comparable to available microbalance temperature resolutions of around 0.1 K. The corresponding percent age error is then 1.4%, or 43 yr for a 3000-yr-old ceramic. The proposed SAS method should be tested with ceramic samples of different ages, whose ELT are well-known.

    Description: Glasses in the Na 2 O–CaO–SrO–ZnO–SiO 2 system have previously been investigated for suitability as a reagent in Al-free glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs). These materials have many properties that offer potential in orthopedics. However, their applicability has been limited, to date, because of their poor strength. This study was undertaken with the aim of increasing the mechanical properties of a series of these Zn-based GPC glasses by doping with nitrogen to give overall compositions of: 10Na 2 O–10CaO–20SrO–20ZnO–(40−3 x )SiO 2 – x Si 3 N 4 ( x is the no. of moles of Si 3 N 4 ). The density, glass-transition temperature, hardness, and elastic modulus of each glass were found to increase fairly linearly with nitrogen content. Indentation fracture resistance also increases with nitrogen content according to a power law relationship. These increases are consistent with the incorporation of N into the glass structure in threefold coordination with silicon resulting in extra cross-linking of the glass network. This was confirmed using 29 Si MAS-NMR which showed that an increasing number of Q 2 units and some Q 3 units with extra bridging anions are formed as nitrogen content increases at the expense of Q 1 units. A small proportion of Zn ions are found to be in tetrahedral coordination in the base oxide glass and the proportion of these increases with the presence of nitrogen.

    Description: The development of devices able to detect and record ion fluxes is a crucial point in order to understand the mechanisms that regulate communication and life of organisms. Here, we take advantage of the combined electronic and ionic conduction properties of a conducting polymer to develop a hybrid organic/living device with a three-terminal configuration, using the Physarum polycephalum Cell (PPC) slime mould as a living bio-electrolyte. An over-oxidation process induces a conductivity switch in the polymer, due to the ionic flux taking place at the PPC/polymer interface. This behaviour endows a current-depending memory effect to the device.

Colloidal solutions of hercynite nanoparticles were synthesized in three different liquids by ablation using 532-nm output of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser with three laser fluencies. Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used for the characterization of these nanoparticles. The nanoparticles obtained were of spherical shapes with cubic crystalline structure. It was observed that the laser fluence and liquid media could affect the morphology and size of hercynite nanoparticles.

    Description: We consider the general open system problem of a charged quantum oscillator confined in a harmonic trap, whose frequency can be arbitrarily modulated in time, that interacts with both an incoherent quantized (blackbody) radiation field and with an arbitrary coherent laser field. We assume that the oscillator is initially in thermodynamic equilibrium with its environment, a non-factorized initial density matrix of the system and the environment, and that at t = 0 the modulation of the frequency, the coupling to the incoherent and the coherent radiation are switched on. The subsequent dynamics, induced by the presence of the blackbody radiation, the laser field, and the frequency modulation, is studied in the framework of the influence functional approach. This approach allows incorporating, in analytic closed formulae , the non-Markovian character of the oscillator-environment interaction at any temperature as well the non-Markovian character of the blackbody radiation and its zero-point fluctuations. Expressions for the time evolution of the covariance matrix elements of the quantum fluctuations and the reduced density-operator are obtained.

    Description: This paper presents the results of a comprehensive model-based analysis of a uranyl [U(VI)] tracer test conducted at the U.S. DOE Hanford 300 Area (300A) IFRC. Despite the highly complex field conditions the numerical three-dimensional multi-component reactive transport model was able to capture most of the spatiotemporal variations of the observed U(VI) concentrations. A multi-model analysis was performed to interrogate the relative importance of various processes and factors for controlling field-scale reactive transport during the uranyl tracer test. The results indicate that multi-rate sorption/desorption, surface complexation reactions, and initial concentrations were the most important processes and factors controlling U(VI) migration. On the other hand, cation exchange reactions, the choice of the surface complexation model, and dual-domain mass transfer processes played less important roles under the prevailing field-test condition. Further analysis of the modeling results demonstrates that these findings are conditioned to the relatively stable groundwater chemistry and the selected length of the field experimental duration (16 days). The model analysis also revealed the crucial role of the intraborehole flow that occurred within the long-screened monitoring wells and thus affected both field measurements and simulated U(VI) concentrations as a combined effect of aquifer heterogeneity and dynamic flow conditions. This study provides the first highly data-constrained uranium transport simulations under highly dynamic flow conditions. It illustrates the value of reactive transport modeling for elucidating the relative importance of individual processes in controlling uranium transport under specific field-scale conditions.

    Description: The dynamics of drying processes from porous media are critically influenced by the intensity of an adjacent free flow and by processes at the interface between free flow and the porous medium. In this paper, the influence of hydraulic properties of a porous medium and of the interaction between fluids and porous medium on the drying dynamics during the capillary-flow dominated stage-1 and transition to the diffusion-dominated stage-2 are studied using a coupled free-flow - porous-medium flow model on the REV scale. We present a detailed model concept that considers mass balance equations, an energy balance equation and the coupling to the adjacent free flow. Key microscale processes are identified and incorporated in the macroscale description of the evaporation process. Own experimental results are used to illustrate main features of the modeling framework. We demonstrate that the use of a homogeneous distribution of soil parameters without consideration of pore-scale induced nonlinearities in the numerical simulations results in a rather constant drying rate in stage-1, which was not observed for the high evaporative demand in the experiments. To account for the dependency of the drying rate on the surface moisture content, special conditions based on the work of Haghighi et al. [2013] and Schlünder [1988] are analyzed for their applicability on the REV scale. Typical features of a drying process, such as different stages of the drying rate, could be reproduced.

    Description: Making useful predictions in ungauged basins is an incredibly difficult task given the limitations of hydrologic models to represent physical processes appropriately across the heterogeneity within and among different catchments. Here, we introduce a new method for this challenge, Bayes empirical Bayes, that allows for the statistical pooling of information from multiple donor catchments and provides the ability to transfer parametric distributions rather than single parameter sets to the ungauged catchment. Further, the methodology provides an efficient framework with which to formally assess predictive uncertainty at the ungauged catchment. We investigated the utility of the methodology under both synthetic and real data conditions, and with respect to its sensitivity to the number and quality of the donor catchments used. This study highlighted the ability of the hierarchical Bayes empirical Bayes approach to produce expected outcomes in both the synthetic and real data applications. The method was found to be sensitive to the quality (hydrologic similarity) of the donor catchments used. Results were less sensitive to the number of donor catchments, but indicated that predictive uncertainty was best constrained with larger numbers of donor catchments (but still adequate with fewer donors)

    Description: Autumn is a season of dynamic change in forest streams of the northeastern USA due to effects of leaf fall on both hydrology and biogeochemistry. Few studies have explored how interactions of biogeochemical transformations, various nitrogen sources, and catchment flowpaths affect stream nitrogen variation during autumn. To provide more information on this critical period, we studied 1) the timing, duration, and magnitude of changes to stream nitrate, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and ammonium concentrations; 2) changes in nitrate sources and cycling; and 3) source areas of the landscape that most influence stream nitrogen. We collected samples at higher temporal resolution for a longer duration than typical studies of stream nitrogen during autumn. This sampling scheme encompassed the patterns and extremes that occurred during baseflow and stormflow events of autumn. Baseflow nitrate concentrations decreased by an order of magnitude from 5.4 to 0.7 μmol L -1 during the week when most leaves fell from deciduous trees. Changes to rates of biogeochemical transformations during autumn baseflow explained the low nitrate concentrations; in-stream transformations retained up to 72% of the nitrate that entered a stream reach. A decrease of in-stream nitrification coupled with assimilatory nitrate uptake was a primary factor in the seasonal nitrate decline. The period of low nitrate concentrations ended with a storm event in which stream nitrate concentrations increased by 25 fold. In the ensuing weeks, stormflow nitrate concentrations progressively decreased over closely-spaced, yet similarly sized events. Most stormflow nitrate originated from nitrification in near-stream areas with occasional, large inputs of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate, which has rarely been reported for non-snowmelt events. A maximum input of 33% unprocessed atmospheric nitrate to the stream occurred during one event. The large inputs of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate show direct and rapid effects on forest streams that may be widespread, although undocumented, throughout nitrogen-polluted temperate forests. In contrast to a week-long nitrate decline during peak autumn litterfall, baseflow DON concentrations increased after leaf fall and remained high for two months. Dissolved organic nitrogen was hydrologically flushed to the stream from riparian soils during stormflow. In contrast to distinct seasonal changes in baseflow nitrate and DON concentrations, ammonium concentrations were typically at or below detection limit, similar to the rest of the year. Our findings reveal couplings among catchment flow paths, nutrient sources and transformations that control seasonal extremes of stream nitrogen in forested landscapes.

    Description: During the recent years there has been an increasing interest in multivariate frequency analysis of hydrological variables, e.g. those describing extreme events like rainfall, floods or droughts. The multivariate analysis provides a better understanding of the phenomena under investigation and an additional insight about the interrelationships between the different variables (e.g. peak, volume and duration of the flood), exploiting the complete structure of the problem and making a full use of the available data. However, while the developments on multivariate analysis of hydrological data has produced a large body of literature, a clear assessment of the use of these methods in the design and risk assessment of hydraulic structures is still a matter of debate. In the present work we illustrate a general, structure-based framework for the design and/or risk assessment of hydraulic structures in a bivariate environment; we also compare it to recently proposed methods which are based on the assumption of hydrological design events (as is customary in the univariate context). For illustration purposes, both the structure-based and the design event-based approaches are applied to the design of an idealized structure, thus exploring the differences among the methods as function of the parameters involved. Our work highlights that the return period of structure failure in a multivariate environment strictly depends on the particular structure under design, and in most cases the design of an hydraulic structure cannot be based on a single, hydrological multivariate design event. This acts as a warning for practitioners against the use of design methods based on single hydrological events, as usually done in the context of univariate hydrology, thus neglecting the interplay between the structure and the hydrological loads acting on it.

    Description: Phosphorus (P) is one of the major limiting nutrient in many freshwater ecosystems. During the last decade, attention has been focused on the fluxes of suspended sediment and particulate P through freshwater drainage systems because of severe eutrophication effects in aquatic ecosystems. Hence, the analysis and prediction of phosphorus and sediment dynamics constitutes an important element for ecological conservation and restoration of freshwater ecosystems. In that sense, the development ofa suitable prediction model is justified and the present work is devoted to the validation and application of a predictive Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP) uptake and sedimentation models, to a real riparian system of the middle Ebro river floodplain. Both models are coupled to a fully distributed 2D shallow water flow numerical model. The SRP uptake model is validated using data from three field experiments. The model predictions show a good accuracy for SRP concentration, where the linear regressions between measured and calculated of the three experiments were significant ( r 2  ≥ 0.62; p  ≤ 0.05), and a Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (E) that ranged from 0.54 to 0.62. The sedimentation model is validated using field data collected during 2 real flooding events within the same river reach. The comparison between calculated and measured sediment deposition showed a significant linear regression ( p  ≤ 0.05; r 2  = 0.97) and an E that ranged from 0.63 to 0.78. Subsequently, the complete model that includes flow dynamics, solute transport, SRP uptake and sedimentation is used to simulate and analyze floodplain sediment deposition, river nutrient contribution and SRP uptake. According to this analysis, the main SRP uptake process appears to be the sediment sorption. The analysis also reveals the presence of a lateral gradient of hydrological connectivity that decreases with distance from the river, and controls the river matter contribution to the floodplain.     Description: The inherent effects of global sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies on hydrological cycle and vegetation cover complicate the structure of tropical climate at the regional scale. Assessing hydrological processes related to climate forcing is important in Central America because it is surrounded by both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and two continental landmasses. In this study, the use of high-resolution remote sensing imagery in wavelet analysis helps identify nonstationary characteristics of hydrological and ecological responses. The wavelet-based empirical orthogonal function (WEOF) further reflects the nonlinear relationship between the Atlantic and Pacific SST and the greenness of a pristine forested site in Panama, La Amistad International Park. Integrated WEOF and descriptive statistics for data analysis reveal a higher temporal variability in terrestrial precipitation relative to in-situ land surface temperature and its probable effects on the presence of dry periods. Such teleconnection signals of SST were identified as a driving force of decline in tropical forest greenness during dry periods. The results of our remote sensing-based wavelet analysis showed intrannual high frequency and biennial to triennial low frequency signals between enhanced vegetation index (EVI)/precipitation datasets and SST indices in both Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A spatiotemporal priority search further confirmed the importance of the effects of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) over terrestrial responses in the selected study site. Coincidence of the effect of ENSO teleconnection patterns on precipitation and vegetation suggest possible impacts of El Niño-associated droughts in Central America, accompanied by reduced rainfall, especially during the first months of rainy season (June, July and August), and decline in vegetation cover during the dry season (March and April).     Description: Proliferation of evapotranspiration (ET) products warrants comparison of these products. The study objective was to assess uncertainty in ET output from four land surface models (LSMs), Noah, Mosaic, VIC, and SAC in NLDAS-2, two remote sensing-based products, MODIS and AVHRR, and GRACE-inferred ET from a water budget with precipitation from PRISM, monitored runoff, and total water storage change (TWSC) from GRACE satellites. The three cornered hat method, which does not require a priori knowledge of the true ET value, was used to estimate ET uncertainties. In addition, TWSC or total water storage anomaly (TWSA) from GRACE was compared with water budget estimates of TWSC from a flux-based approach or TWSA from a storage-based approach. The analyses were conducted using data from three regions (humid – arid) in the South Central US as case studies. Uncertainties in ET are lowest in LSM ET (~5 mm/month), moderate in MODIS- or AVHRR-based ET (10 – 15 mm/month), and highest in GRACE-inferred ET (20 – 30 mm/month). There is a tradeoff between spatial resolution and uncertainty, with lower uncertainty in the coarser-resolution LSM ET (~14 km) relative to higher uncertainty in the finer-resolution (~ 1 ‒ 8 km) RS ET. Root-mean-square (RMS) of uncertainties in water budget estimates of TWSC is about half of RMS of uncertainties in GRACE-derived TWSC for each of the regions. Future ET estimation should consider a hybrid approach that integrates strengths of LSMs and satellite-based products to constrain uncertainties.

    Description: It is well documented that deforestation results in an increase in landslide frequency due to the control that forest roots have on slope stability. The loss of forest vegetation leads to a reduction in soil cohesion and a decrease in the shear strength of the soil profile. As a result, the slope becomes more susceptible to landsliding and the return time of landslides decreases. When a landslide removes the soil profile, there may not be adequate time for seedlings to grow and enhance soil stability. In this study, we investigate whether bistable dynamics emerge from the interaction of forest vegetation with the formation and accumulation of colluvial deposits in soil-mantled landscapes. To that end, we develop deterministic and stochastic models of landslide occurrence with a dynamic vegetation component. Results show that bistability exists for the deterministic case for both steep and shallow hollows under event and supply limited conditions. However, for the stochastic case, the randomness of landslide occurrence largely changed the states of the system such that the system only exhibited one stable state, which was the fully vegetated condition. Examining different management practices under stochastic conditions showed that the system eventually recovered; however, management practices influenced the recovery time of the forest. Thus, different management practices could render the land in a state of low vegetation over economically significant time periods.

    Description: Seepage flux from ephemeral streams can be an important component of the water balance in arid and semi-arid regions. An emerging technique for quantifying this flux involves the measurement and simulation of a flood wave as it moves along an initially dry channel. This study investigates the usefulness of including surface water and groundwater data to improve model calibration when using this technique. We trialed this approach using a controlled flow event along a 1387 m reach of artificial stream channel. Observations were then simulated using a numerical model that combines the diffusion wave approximation of the Saint-Vénant equations for streamflow routing, with Philips’ infiltration equation and the groundwater flow equation. Model estimates of seepage flux for the upstream segments of the study reach, where streambed hydraulic conductivities were approximately 10 1 m d -1 , were on the order of 10 -4 m 3 d -1 m -2 . In the downstream segments, streambed hydraulic conductivities were generally much lower but highly variable (~10 -3 – 10 -7 m d -1 ). The Latin Hypercube Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis showed that the flood front timing, surface water stage, groundwater heads and the predicted stream flow seepage were most influenced by specific yield. Furthermore, inclusion of groundwater data resulted in a higher estimate of total seepage estimates than if the flood front timing were used alone.

    Description: This paper evaluates the IBIS land surface model using daily soil moisture data over a three-year period (2005–2007) at a semi-arid site in southeastern Australia, the Stanley catchment, using the Monte-Carlo GLUE approach. The model was satisfactorily calibrated for both the surface 30 cm and full profile 90 cm. However, full-profile calibration was not as good as that for the surface, which results from some deficiencies in the evapotranspiration component in IBIS. Relatively small differences in simulated soil moisture were associated with large discrepancies in the predictions of surface runoff, drainage and evapotranspiration. We conclude that while land surface schemes may be effective at simulating heat fluxes they may be ineffective for prediction of hydrology unless the soil moisture is accurately estimated. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the soil moisture simulations were most sensitive to soil parameters, and the wilting point was the most identifiable parameter. Significant interactions existed between three soils parameters: porosity, saturated hydraulic conductivity and Campbell “b” exponent so they could not be identified independent of each other. There were no significant differences in parameter sensitivity and interaction for different hydroclimatic years. Even though the data record contained a very dry year and another year with a very large rainfall event, this indicated that the soil model could be calibrated without the data needing to explore the extreme range of dry and wet conditions. IBIS was much less sensitive to vegetation parameters. The leaf area index (LAI) could affect the mean of daily soil moisture time series when LAI 〈 1, while the variance of the soil moisture time series was sensitive to LAI 〉 1. IBIS was insensitive to the Jackson rooting parameter, suggesting that the effect of the rooting depth distribution on predictions of hydrology was insignificant.     Description: We present a probabilistic sediment cascade model to simulate sediment transfer in a mountain basin (Illgraben, Switzerland) where sediment is produced by hillslope landslides and rockfalls and exported out of the basin by debris flows and floods. The model conceptualizes the fluvial system as a spatially lumped cascade of connected reservoirs representing hillslope and channel storages where sediment goes through cycles of storage and remobilization by surface runoff. The model includes all relevant hydrological processes that lead to runoff formation in an Alpine basin, such as precipitation, snow accumulation, snow melt, evapotranspiration, and soil water storage. Although the processes of sediment transfer and debris flow generation are described in a simplified manner, the model produces complex sediment discharge behavior which is driven by the availability of sediment and antecedent wetness conditions (system memory) as well as the triggering potential (climatic forcing). The observed probability distribution of debris flow volumes and their seasonality in 2000-2009 are reproduced. The stochasticity of hillslope sediment input is important for reproducing realistic sediment storage variability, although many details of the hillslope landslide triggering procedures are filtered out by the sediment transfer system. The model allows us to explicitly quantify the division into transport and supply-limited sediment discharge events. We show that debris flows may be generated for a wide range of rainfall intensities because of variable antecedent basin wetness and snowmelt contribution to runoff, which helps to understand the limitations of methods based on a single rainfall threshold for debris flow initiation in Alpine basins.

    Description: This study presents a thermodynamic analysis to predict the type of initial, amorphous oxide overgrowth (i.e., am - Al 2 O 3 or am - SiO 2 ) on bare Al – Si alloy substrates. This analysis have taken into account the energies associated with both its interfaces (interface between the Al – Si alloy substrate and the thin oxide film and interface between the thin oxide film and vacuum) along with the bulk Gibbs free energy of oxide formation. This developed analysis is then applied for various parameters, such as, Si alloying element content at the substrate/oxide interface, the growth temperature, the oxide film thickness (up to 1 nm), and various low-index crystallographic surfaces of the substrate. It is found that am - SiO 2 overgrowth is thermodynamically preferred for a combination of lower oxide film thickness, lower growth temperature, and lower Si alloying content at the alloy/oxide interface. This is because of the overcompensation of the lower energies of both the interfaces over the bulk Gibbs free energy. Furthermore, it is found that for all cases, am - Al 2 O 3 forms a more stable interface with Al – Si alloy than am - SiO 2.

After sintering at 950°C and pressure exertion of 300MPa for 2 h, a transmittance of 10–25% was achieved in the visible region, through a thickness of 0.75 mm. Microstructure investigations indicated the average grain size was around 42.7 μm, with no obvious pores observed on the fracture surface. The X-ray luminescence spectra, decay time, and thermoluminescence spectra were measured, and the results of the ceramics were similar to its corresponding single crystals, which proved it to be a promising scintillation material.

    Description: Characterizing the complex geometries and the heterogeneity of the deposits in meandering river systems is a long-standing issue for the 3D modeling of alluvial formations. Such deposits are important sources of accessible groundwater in alluvial aquifers throughout the world and also play a major role as hydrocarbons reservoirs. In this paper we present a method to generate meandering river centerlines that are stochastic, geologically realistic, connected and conditioned to local observations or global geomorphological characteristics. The method is based on fast 1D multiple-point statistics in a transformed curvilinear domain: the succession in directions observed in a real world meandering river (the analog) is considered as statistical model for multiple-point statistics simulation. The integration of local data is accomplished by an inverse procedure ensuring that the channels pass through a given set of locations while conserving the high-order spatial characteristics of an analog. The methodology is applied on seven real world case studies. This work demonstrates the flexibility and the applicability of multiple-point statistics outside the standard paradigm that considers the simulation of a 2D or 3D variable with spatial coordinates.

    Description: Large asymmetric bedforms commonly develop in rivers. The turbulence associated with flow separation that develops over their steep lee side is responsible for the form shear stress which can represent a substantial part of total shear stress in rivers. This paper uses the Delft3D modeling system to investigate the effects of bedform geometry and forcing conditions on flow separation length and associated turbulence, and bedform shear stress over angle-of-repose (30° lee side angle) bedforms. The model was validated with laboratory measurements that showed sufficient agreement to be used for a systematic analysis. The influence of flow velocity, bed roughness, relative height (bedform height / water depth) and aspect ratio (bedform height / length) on the variations of the normalized length of the flow separation zone, the extent of the wake region (where the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) was more than 70% of the maximum TKE), the average TKE within the wake region and the form shear stress were investigated. Form shear stress was found not to scale with the size of the flow separation zone but to be related to the product of the normalized extent of the wake region (extent of the wake region / extent of water body above the bedform) and the average TKE within the wake region. The results add to understanding of the hydrodynamics of bedforms and may be used for the development of better parameterizations of small-scale processes for application in large-scale studies.

    Description: We explore the bankfull width ( W bf ) vs. drainage area ( A da ) relationship across a range of climatic and geologic environments, and ask (1) is the relationship between ln ( W bf ) and ln ( A da ) best described by a linear function and (2) can a reliable relationship be developed for predicting W bf with A da as the only independent variable. The principal dataset for this study was compiled from regional curve studies and other reports that represent 1,018 sites (1 m ≤ W bf ≤ 110 m and 0.50 km 2 ≤ A da ≤ 22,000 km 2 ) in the continental U.S. Two additional datasets were used for validation. After dividing the data into small-, medium-, and large-size basins which, respectfully, correspond to A da 〈 4.95 km 2 , 4.95 km 2 ≤ A da 〈 337 km 2 , and A da ≥ 337 km 2 , regression lines from each dataset were compared using one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). A second ANCOVA was performed to determine if mean annual precipitation ( P ) is an extraneous factor in the W bf vs. A da relationship. The ANCOVA results reveal that using A da alone does not yield a reliable W bf vs. A da relationship that is applicable across a wide range of environments and that P is a significant extraneous factor in the relationship. Considering data for very small basins ( A da ≤ 0.49 km 2 ) and very large basins ( A da ≥ 1.0×10 5 km 2 ) we conclude that a two-segment linear model is the most probable form of the ln ( W bf ) vs. ln ( A da ) relationship. This study provides useful information for building complex multivariate models for predicting W bf .

    Description: This paper deals with the asymptotic behavior of the first Bloch eigenvalue in a heterogeneous medium with a high contrast ɛ Y -periodic conductivity. When the conductivity is bounded in L 1 and the constant of the Poincaré-Wirtinger weighted by the conductivity is very small with respect to ɛ −2 , the first Bloch eigenvalue converges as ɛ → 0 to a limit which preserves the second-order expansion with respect to the Bloch parameter. In dimension two the expansion of the limit can be improved until the fourth-order under the same hypotheses. On the contrary, in dimension three a fibers reinforced medium combined with a L 1 -unbounded conductivity leads us to a discontinuity of the limit first Bloch eigenvalue as the Bloch parameter tends to zero but remains not orthogonal to the direction of the fibers. Therefore, the high contrast conductivity of the microstructure induces an anomalous effect, since for a given low-contrast conductivity the first Bloch eigenvalue is known to be analytic with respect to the Bloch parameter around zero.

    Description: The effect of direct integration of PZT into LTCC by sintering on its polarization behavior is studied. Due to the typically small thermal expansion of PZT, compressive stresses are expected after cooling, which should promote poling. However, measurements show a strongly reduced remanent polarization compared to free PZT. Analysis of thermal expansion reveals that thermal shrinkage of the PZT is larger than that of LTCC. The impact of this finding on the poling behavior is simulated for the LTCC/PZT module, confirming the experimental observations and allowing for conclusions concerning the suitability of the PZT for integration into LTCC structures.

    Description: Over the past few decades ground water has become an essential commodity due to increased demand as a result of growing population, industrialization, urbanization etc. The water supply situation is expected to become more severe in the future because of continued unsustainable water use and projected change in hydro-meteorological parameters due to climate change. This study is based on the integrated approach of Remote Sensing (RS), Geographical Information System (GIS) and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) techniques to determine the most important contributing factors that affect the ground water resources and to delineate the ground water potential zones. Ten thematic layers viz. geomorphology, geology, soil, topographic elevation (DEM), land use/land cover, drainage density, lineament density, proximity of surface water bodies, surface temperature and post-monsoon ground water depth were considered for the present study. These thematic layers were selected for ground water prospecting based on literature, discussion with the experts of Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Government of India, field observations, geophysical investigation and multivariate techniques. The thematic layers and their features were assigned suitable weights on the Saaty's scale according to their relative significance for ground water occurrence. The assigned weights of the layers and their features were normalized by using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and eigenvector method. Finally, the selected thematic maps were integrated using weighted linear combination method to create the final ground water potential zone map. The final output map shows different zones of ground water potential, viz., very good (16%), good (35%), moderate (28%) low (17%) and very low (2.1%). The ground water potential zone map was finally validated using the discharge and ground water depth data from 28 and 98 pumping wells respectively which showed good correlation.     Description: Bank erosion is the main source of suspended sediment (SS) and diffuse total phosphorus (TP) in many lowland catchments. This study compared a physically based sediment routing method (Physical method), which distinguishes between stream bed and bank erosion, with the original sediment routing method (Original method) within the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) version 2009, for simulating SS and TP losses from a lowland catchment. A SWAT model was set up for the lowland River Odense catchment in Denmark and calibrated against observed stream flow and phosphate (PO 4 ) loads. Based on an initial calibration of hydrological and PO 4 parameters, the SWAT model with the Original method (Original model) and the SWAT model with the Physical method (Physical model) were calibrated separately against observed SS and TP loads. The SWAT model simulated daily stream flow well, but underestimated PO 4 loads. The Physical model simulated daily SS and TP better than the Original model. The simulated contribution of bank erosion to SS in the Physical model (99%) was close to the estimated contribution from in-situ erosion measurements (90-94%).     Description: This paper focuses on surface-subsurface water exchange in a steep coarse-bedded stream with step-pool morphology. We use both flume experiments and numerical modelling to investigate the influence of stream discharge, channel slope and sediment hydraulic conductivity on hyporheic exchange. The model step-pool reach, whose topography is scaled from a natural river, consists of 3 step-pool units with 0.1 m step heights, discharges ranging between base and over bankfull flows (scaled values of 0.3-4.5 L/s) and slopes of 4 and 8%. Results indicate that the deepest hyporheic flow occurs with the steeper slope and at moderate discharges and downwelling fluxes at the base of steps are highest at the largest stream discharges. In contrast to pool-riffle morphology, these findings show that steep slopes cause deeper surface-subsurface exchanges than gentle slopes. Numerical simulation results show that the portion of the hyporheic zone influenced by surface water temperature increases with sediment hydraulic conductivity. These experiments and numerical simulations emphasize the importance of topography, sediment permeability and roughness elements along the channel surface in governing the locations and magnitude of downwelling fluxes and hyporheic exchange. Our results show that hyporheic zones in these steep streams are thicker than previously expected by extending the results from streams with pool-riffle bed forms.     Description: Recent studies show that multimodel combinations improve hydroclimatic predictions by reducing model uncertainty. Given that climate forecasts are available from multiple climate models, which could be ingested with multiple watershed models, what is the best strategy to reduce the uncertainty in streamflow forecasts? To address this question, we consider three possible strategies: (1) reduce the input uncertainty first by combining climate models and then use the multimodel climate forecasts with multiple watershed models (MM-P) (2) ingest the individual climate forecasts (without multimodel combination) with various watershed models and then combine the streamflow predictions that arise from all possible combinations of climate and watershed models (MM-Q)(3) combine the streamflow forecasts obtained from multiple watershed models based on strategy (1) to develop a single streamflow prediction that reduces uncertainty in both climate forecasts and watershed models (MM-PQ) . For this purpose, we consider synthetic schemes that generate streamflow and climate forecasts, for comparing the performance of three strategies with the true streamflow generated by a given hydrologic model. Results from the synthetic study show that reducing input uncertainty first ( MM-P ) by combining climate forecasts results in reduced error in predicting the true streamflow compared to the error of multimodel streamflow forecasts obtained by combining streamflow forecasts from all-possible combination of individual climate model with various hydrologic models ( MM-Q ). Since the true hydrologic model structure is unknown, it is desirable to consider MM-PQ as an alternate choice that reduces both input uncertainty and hydrologic model uncertainty. Application on two watersheds in NC also indicates that reducing the input uncertainty first is critical before reducing the hydrologic model uncertainty.

    Description: The understanding of reasons leading to non-uniqueness of soil erosion susceptibility is still inadequate, yet indispensable for establishing general relations between runoff volume and sediment yield. To obtain relevant insights, we performed a series of numerical simulations with a detailed hydrodynamic model using synthetic storms of varying intensity, duration, and lag time between events as representations of different hydrologic response conditions in a zero-order catchment. The design targeted to generate surface flow and ‘perturb’ soil substrate by a first rainfall event, creating a set of initial conditions in terms of flow and deposited sediment prior to the onset of a subsequent rainfall event. Due to the differential effect of (re)detachment and (re)entrainment processes on soil particles of varying sizes, the deposited sediment mass formed shielding layer. One of the essential results is that unless the initial condition of flow and sediment is identical, the same volume of runoff can generate different total sediment yields and their variation can reach up to ~200%. The effect is attributed to two major conflicting effects exerted by the deposited ‘initialization’ (soil antecedent condition) sediment mass: erosion enhancement, because of supply of highly erodible sediment, and erosion impediment, because of constrain on the availability of lighter particles by heavier sediment. Consistently with this inference, long-term simulations with continuous rainfall show that a peculiar feature of sediment yield series is the existence of maximum before the steady-state is reached. The two characteristic time scales, the time to peak and the time to steady-state, separate three characteristic periods that correspond to flow-limited, source-limited, and steady-state regimes. These time scales are log-linearly and negatively related to the spatially averaged Shields parameter: the smaller the rainfall input and the heavier a given particle is, the larger the two scales are. The results provide insights on how the existence of shield operates on erosion processes, possibly implying that accurate short-term predictions of geomorphic events from headwater areas may never become a tractable problem: the latter would require a detailed spatial characterization of particle size distribution prior to precipitation events.

    Description: Aquifer hydraulic properties such as hydraulic conductivity ( K ) are ubiquitously heterogeneous and typically only a statistical characterization can be sought. Additionally statistical anisotropy at typical characterization scales is the rule. Thus, regardless of the processes governing solute transport at the local (pore) scale, transport becomes non-Fickian. Mass-transfer models provide an efficient tool that reproduces observed anomalous transport; in some cases though, these models lack predictability as model parameters cannot readily be connected to the physical properties of aquifers. In this study we focus on a multi-rate mass-transfer model (MRMT), and in particular the apparent capacity coefficient (β), which is a strong indicator of the potential of immobile zones to capture moving solute. We aim to find if the choice of an apparent β can be phenomenologically related to measures of statistical anisotropy. We analyzed an ensemble of random simulations of three-dimensional log-transformed multi-Gaussian permeability fields with stationary anisotropic correlation under convergent flow conditions. It was found that apparent β also displays an anisotropic behavior, physically controlled by the aquifer directional connectivity, which in turn is controlled by the anisotropic correlation model. A high hydraulic connectivity results in large β values. These results provide new insights into the practical use of mass-transfer models for predictive purposes.

    Description: Sintered nanoceramics of Pr -doped lanthanum hafnate, La 2 Hf 2 O 7 : Pr , were prepared by means of a high-pressure sintering technique using nanopowders made by Pechini method. Structure, morphology, and spectroscopic properties of the ceramics compared to the starting powder are presented and discussed. Emission and excitation spectra recorded at room temperature as well as at 7 K using synchrotron radiation are presented together with results of luminescence kinetics measurements. In ceramics, at 7 K, the Pr 3+ luminescence from 3 P 0 (blue-green, green, and red region) and 1 D 2 (red) levels is accompanied by a broad-band emission located in the 380–530 nm range of wavelengths, whereas powders gives only the Pr 3+ -related luminescence. Depending on the excitation wavelength, the broad-band emission maximum moves between 430 and 470 nm indicating superposition of at least two components. In sintered nanoceramics, the lifetimes of Pr 3+ emissions from 3 P 0 and 1 D 2 levels were by 10%–20% shorter compared to the powder. The existence of different luminescence centers was proved by the selective emission decays examination. The fast 5 d → 4 f luminescence of Pr 3+ was not observed from either of the two types of La 2 Hf 2 O 7 :Pr materials.

    Description: In this paper, an operational algorithm is proposed for the mapping of surface moisture over the northern and central parts of Tunisia, in North Africa. A change detection approach is applied, using 160 multi-incidence Envisat ASAR Wide Swath images acquired in the horizontal polarization over a 7-year period. Parameterization of this algorithm is considered for three classes of vegetation cover density (NDVI〈0.25, 0.25〈NDVI〈0.5 and NDVI〉0.5), retrieved from SPOT-VGT decadal images. A relative soil moisture index, ranging between 0 (for the driest surfaces) and 1 (for saturated soils), is proposed for each date, with a resolution of 1 km. The retrieved soil moistures are validated by means of ground measurements based on continuous thetaprobe measurements, as well as low resolution (25 km) ERS and ASCAT soil moisture products from the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). A qualitative relationship between spatio-temporal variations of moisture and precipitation is also discussed.

    Description: In the present paper, we build a combinatorial invariant, called the “spectral monodromy” from the spectrum of a single (non-self-adjoint) h -pseudodifferential operator with two degrees of freedom in the semi-classical limit. Our inspiration comes from the quantum monodromy defined for the joint spectrum of an integrable system of n commuting self-adjoint h -pseudodifferential operators, given by S. Vu Ngoc [“Quantum monodromy in integrable systems,” Commun. Math. Phys.203(2), 465–479 (1999)]. The first simple case that we treat in this work is a normal operator. In this case, the discrete spectrum can be identified with the joint spectrum of an integrable quantum system. The second more complex case we propose is a small perturbation of a self-adjoint operator with a classical integrability property. We show that the discrete spectrum (in a small band around the real axis) also has a combinatorial monodromy. The main difficulty in this case is that we do not know the description of the spectrum everywhere, but only in a Cantor type set. In addition, we also show that the corresponding monodromy can be identified with the classical monodromy, defined by J. Duistermaat [“On global action-angle coordinates,” Commun. Pure Appl. Math.33(6), 687–706 (1980)].

    Description: The objective of this analysis is to demonstrate the feasibility of using a composite L2 SMOS soil moisture product for determining drought conditions by taking advantage of its spatial and temporal resolution. The work investigates the potential relationships between soil moisture anomalies and two drought indices, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), both calculated on a ten-day basis. As the two drought indices can be applied to different time scales for precipitation series, the influence of time scale on the drought definition is also studied. The anomalies were calculated both for the in situ soil moisture by REMEDHUS (Soil Moisture Measurement Stations Network, Spain) and from the SMOS L2 soil moisture product. In general, in situ anomalies exhibit higher correlation coefficients for the drought indices than those of SMOS, except for the shortest time scale. As expected, the short-term remotely sensed anomalies have a high response to precipitation events. This effect may be due to the greater sensitivity of SMOS data to rainfall, as well as to the spatial averaged nature of its observations. The optimal time scale was one month for the SMOS values and ranged between 30 and 50 days for the in situ values. The use of evapotranspiration in the calculation of the indices did not improve the description of the anomalies. The relationship between indices and soil moisture conditions provides encouraging results. Indeed, this method generates preliminary but valuable insights for future satellite products.     Description: We study Killing tensors in the context of warped products and apply the results to the problem of orthogonal separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This work is motivated primarily by the case of spaces of constant curvature where warped products are abundant. We first characterize Killing tensors which have a natural algebraic decomposition in warped products. We then apply this result to show how one can obtain the Killing-Stäckel space (KS-space) for separable coordinate systems decomposable in warped products. This result in combination with Benenti's theory for constructing the KS-space of certain special separable coordinates can be used to obtain the KS-space for all orthogonal separable coordinates found by Kalnins and Miller in Riemannian spaces of constant curvature. Next we characterize when a natural Hamiltonian is separable in coordinates decomposable in a warped product by showing that the conditions originally given by Benenti can be reduced. Finally, we use this characterization and concircular tensors (a special type of torsionless conformal Killing tensor) to develop a general algorithm to determine when a natural Hamiltonian is separable in a special class of separable coordinates which include all orthogonal separable coordinates in spaces of constant curvature.

    Description: TiO 2 -doped NiFe 2 O 4 samples were prepared via ball-milling and two-step sintering processes. Besides NiFe 2 O 4 phase, two new phases, NiTiO 3 and Fe 2 TiO 5 , formed in TiO 2 -doped samples. The temperature of sintering onset for 1.0 wt% TiO 2 -doped samples is 230°C lower than that of undoped samples. Early-stage synthesis process of TiO 2 -doped NiFe 2 O 4 ceramics is controlled by grain boundary diffusion mechanism. Increasing TiO 2 content from 0 to 1.0 wt%, the apparent activation energy decreased from 813.919 KJ/mol to 639.361 KJ/mol. The values of relative density and bending strength reached their maximum value with 1.0 wt% TiO 2 . Saturation magnetization, residual magnetization ratio and coercivity decrease with increasing TiO 2 content.

    Description: This article demonstrates the energy harvesting capabilities of bulk lead-free ferroelectric materials using Olsen cycle. Lead-free compositions K[(Nb 0.90 Ta 0.10 ) 0.99 Mn 0.01 ]O 3 (KNTM) and 0.5Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0 . 8 )O 3 -0.5(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3 (BZT-50BCT) have been explored for their energy harvesting capabilities. Further, we studied the variation in energy density over wide range of applied temperature and electric field. The maximum harness-able energy density for KNTM and BZT-50BCT compositions are found to be 629 J/L (629 kJ/m 3 ) and 87 J/L (87 kJ/m 3 ), respectively. This estimated energy density, obtained for the bulk samples, is comparable with the highest energy density reported to-date (888 J/L for lanthanum-doped lead zirconate titanate (8/65/35 PLZT) thick films).

    Description: Remote estimation of river discharge from river width variations is an intriguing method for gauging rivers without conventional measurements. Entirely cloud-free imagery of an entire river reach is often rare, but partial coverage is more frequent. Discharge is estimated from spatially discontinuous imagery via construction of multiple width-discharge rating curves within a 62 km reach of the Tanana River, Alaska. The resulting discharge error is as low as 6.7% RMSE. Imagery covering 〈20% of the study reach can be used. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

    Description: Zirconium diboride–based ceramics were studied to explore the effects of high secondary phase content and the relative merits of silicon carbide and zirconium carbide. Densification and grain growth were not influenced by heating rate or composition. Hardness increased with silicon carbide or zirconium carbide content from 18 to 26GPa and 18 to 21.5GPa respectively. Flexural strength was controlled by grain size and mode of crack propagation, and maximized at 380MPa at 20wt% silicon carbide and 590 MPa at 50wt% zirconium carbide. Zirconium carbide enhanced flexural strength better, due to its smaller coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch with zirconium diboride.

    Description: Using the association of low-cost screen-printing technology with the sacrificial layer method, the feasibility of totally released piezoelectric thick-film microceramics of gold-electroded PZT type is studied. After the deposition of the sacrificial layer on an alumina substrate and subsequent printing and drying of gold/PZT/gold layers, the final firing is performed at low temperature. This is followed by the releasing step of the Au/PZT/Au in a diluted acidic solution. Impedance analysis shows that the electrical properties and electromechanical coefficients of poled PZT thick films are still lower than those of PZT ceramics. This result is correlated with the high porosity rate of the PZT layer. However, these piezoelectric microceramics present desirable electromechanical behavior and can therefore be used as dynamic-mode sensors or as actuators to generate vibrations in a structure on which they are bonded. Moreover, the successful fabrication and the electromechanical impedance (EMI) levels obtained on a metallic structure suggest possible structural health monitoring applications of these screen-printed PZT microceramics.

    Description: We study the propagation of ultra-short short solitons in a cubic nonlinear medium modeled by nonlinear Maxwell's equations with stochastic variations of media. We consider three cases: variations of (a) the dispersion, (b) the phase velocity, (c) the nonlinear coefficient. Using a modified multi-scale expansion for stochastic systems, we derive new stochastic generalizations of the short pulse equation that approximate the solutions of stochastic nonlinear Maxwell's equations. Numerical simulations show that soliton solutions of the short pulse equation propagate stably in stochastic nonlinear Maxwell's equations and that the generalized stochastic short pulse equations approximate the solutions to the stochastic Maxwell's equations over the distances under consideration. This holds for both a pathwise comparison of the stochastic equations as well as for a comparison of the resulting probability densities.

    Description: We study spectral asymptotics for a large class of differential operators on an open subset of R d with finite volume. This class includes the Dirichlet Laplacian, the fractional Laplacian, and also fractional differential operators with non-homogeneous symbols. Based on a sharp estimate for the sum of the eigenvalues we establish the first term of the semiclassical asymptotics. This generalizes Weyl's law for the Laplace operator.

    Description: We have investigated the electromechanical response of potassium sodium niobate ( K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 or KNN) thick films. The high-field strain hysteresis loops and weak-field converse piezoelectric d 33 coefficient of the films were measured and compared with those of KNN bulk ceramics under the same electric field conditions. The converse d 33 values of the thick films and bulk ceramics were equal to 82.5 and 138 pm/V, respectively, at 0.4 kV/mm. The fundamental difference between the piezoelectric response of the KNN films and the ceramics was studied in terms of the effective (“clamped”) piezoelectric d 33 coefficient. The reduction in the piezoelectric d 33 coefficient of the KNN films, resulting from the clamping by the substrate, was compared to lead-based ferroelectric thick films, including Pb ( Zr , Ti ) O 3 (PZT) and (1 −  x ) Pb ( Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) O 3 − x PbTiO 3 (PMN-PT). We propose a possible explanation, based on the particular elastic properties of KNN, for the small relative difference observed between the “clamped” and “unclamped” (“bulk”) d 33 of KNN, in comparison with lead-based systems.

    Description: The present paper is devoted to the scattering theory of a class of continuum Schrödinger operators with deterministic sparse potentials. We first establish the limiting absorption principle for both modified free resolvents and modified perturbed resolvents. This actually is a weak form of the classical limiting absorption principle. We then prove the existence and completeness of local wave operators, which, in particular, imply the existence of wave operators. Under additional assumptions on the sparse potential, we prove the completeness of wave operators. In the context of continuum Schrödinger operators with sparse potentials, this paper gives the first proof of the completeness of wave operators.

    Description: We consider C -graded vertex algebras , which are vertex algebras V with a C -grading such that V is an admissible V -module generated by “lowest weight vectors.” We show that such vertex algebras have a “good” representation theory in the sense that there is a Zhu algebra A ( V ) and a bijection between simple admissible V -modules and simple A ( V )-modules. We also consider pseudo vertex operator algebras (PVOAs), which are C -graded vertex algebras with a conformal vector such that the homogeneous subspaces of V are generalized eigenspaces for L (0); essentially, these are VOAs that lack any semisimplicity or integrality assumptions on L (0). As a motivating example, we show that deformation of the conformal structure (conformal flow) of a strongly regular VOA (e.g., a lattice theory, or Wess-Zumino-Witten model) is a path in a space whose points are PVOAs.

    Description: Following the lines of the recent paper of J.-P. Gazeau and F. H. Szafraniec [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.44, 495201 (2011)], we construct here three types of coherent states, related to the Hermite polynomials in a complex variable which are orthogonal with respect to a non-rotationally invariant measure. We investigate relations between these coherent states and obtain the relationship between them and the squeezed states of quantum optics. We also obtain a second realization of the canonical coherent states in the Bargmann space of analytic functions, in terms of a squeezed basis. All this is done in the flavor of the classical approach of V. Bargmann [Commun. Pure Appl. Math.14, 187 (1961)].

    Description: Using the momentum-space approach, we obtain bound states for multiple Dirac-δ wells in the framework of space-fractional quantum mechanics. Introducing first an attractive Dirac-comb potential, i.e., Dirac comb with strength − g ( g 〉 0), in the space-fractional Schrödinger equation we show that the problem of obtaining eigenenergies of a system with N Dirac-δ wells can be reduced to a problem of obtaining the eigenvalues of an N × N matrix. As an illustration we use the present matrix formulation to derive expressions satisfied by the bound-state energies of N = 1, 2, 3 delta wells. We also obtain the corresponding wave functions and express them in terms of Fox's H -function.
