    Properties of Stark Resonant States in Exactly Solvable Systems (2015)

    Beschreibung: Properties of Stark resonant states are studied in two exactly solvable systems. These resonances are shown to form a biorthogonal system with respect to a pairing defined by a contour integral that selects states with outgoing wave boundary conditions. Analytic expressions are derived for the pseudonorm, dipole moment, and coupling matrix elements which relate systems with different strengths of the external field. All results are based on explicit calculations made possible by a newly designed integration method for combinations of Airy functions representing resonant eigenstates. Generalizations for one-dimensional systems with short-range potentials are presented, and relations are identified which are likely to hold in systems with three spatial dimensions.

    Transcriptional Activation of p53 during Cold Induced Torpor in the 13-Lined Ground Squirrel Ictidomys tridecemlineatus (2015)

    Beschreibung: The transcription factor p53 is located at the centre of multiple pathways relating the cellular response to stress. Commonly known as a tumor suppressor, it is responsible for initiating diverse actions to protect the integrity of the genome, ranging from cell cycle arrest to apoptosis. This study investigated the regulation of p53 protein in hibernating 13-lined ground squirrel Ictidomys tridecemlineatus during multiple stages of the torpor-arousal cycle. Transcript and protein levels of p53 were both elevated in the skeletal muscle during early and late torpor stages of the hibernation cycle. Nuclear localization of p53 was also increased during late torpor, and this is associated with an increase in its DNA binding activity and expression of p53 transcriptional targets p21CIP, gadd45α, and 14-3-3σ. The increase in p53 transcriptional activity appears to be independent of its phosphorylation at Ser-15, Ser-46, and Ser-392, consistent with an absence of checkpoint kinase activation during torpor. Sequence analysis revealed unique amino acid substitutions in the ground squirrel p53 protein, which may contribute to an increase in protein stability compared to nonhibernators. Overall, the study results provided evidences for a potential role of p53 in the protection of the skeletal muscle during torpor.

    Comparative In Vitro Binding Studies of TiCl2(dpme)2, Ti(ada)2(bzac)2, and TiCl2(bzac)(bpme) Titanium Complexes with Calf-Thymus DNA (2015)

    Beschreibung: The binding of TiCl2(dpme)2 (1), (dpme = 6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine), Ti(ada)2(bzac)2 (2), (ada = adamantylamine; bzac = benzoylacetone), and TiCl2(bzac)(bpme) (3), (bpme = 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyrdine) with calf thymus (ct) DNA has been studied by UV-visible spectroscopy, thermal denaturation, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. In UV-visible study complexes 1, 2, and 3 showed red, blue, and red shifts, respectively, upon the addition of ct-DNA along with a significant hyperchromism. The intrinsic binding constants () calculated from UV-visible absorption studies were 2.3 × 103 M−1, 3.3 × 103 M−1 and, 7.1 × 103 M−1 for complexes 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The change in melting temperature (Δ) was calculated to be 2-3°C for each complex. Circular dichroism (CD) study showed blue shift for complex 2 and red shift for complexes 1 and 3 along with rise in molecular ellipticity upon the addition of complexes. Results suggest a binding mode of complex 2 different than 1 and 3.

    Investigation of Imbalanced Activated Carbon Electrode Supercapacitors (2015)

    Beschreibung: Imbalanced supercapacitor was constructed by using various ratio of activated carbon (AC) of positive to negative electrode. The electrochemical behavior of imbalanced supercapacitor was investigated using 1.0 M spiro-(1,1′)-bipyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate electrolyte in propylene carbonate. The results showed that there are some factors that influenced the imbalanced supercapacitor with different AC ratio of positive to negative electrode, the utilization of AC, electrode potential distribution, and life cycle. The imbalanced supercapacitor with an AC weight ratio of 80 : 120 of positive to negative electrode has an average potential distribution in each electrode, and it revealed the best electrochemical performance: specific capacitor was 39.6 Fg−1, while the charge-discharge efficiency was 97.2% after 2000 life cycle tests.

    Characteristics of Pepsin-Solubilised Collagen from the Skin of Splendid Squid (Loligo formosana) (2015)

    Beschreibung: Pepsin-solubilised collagen from the skin of splendid squid (SC) was isolated, partially purified by salt precipitation and dialysis prior to characterisation. The yield of SC was 75.3% (dry weight basis). SC with high purity was obtained as shown by the distinct UV absorption peak at 232 nm and high hydroxyproline content. Total sugar content of SC was 4.70% (dry weight basis), which was higher than that of collagen from calf skin (CC) (1.45% dry weight basis) (). Based on SDS-PAGE and elution profile, SC might contain the mixed types of collagen (type SQ-I and type SQ-II), in which α- and β-chains were the major components. SC was rich in glycine and had high content of imino acids (189 residues/1000 residues). The degradation induced by chymotrypsin and lysyl endopeptidase was more pronounced in CC, compared with SC. The maximum transition temperature () of SC was 34.1°C, which was about 7°C lower than that of CC. Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that the triple-helical structure of SC was predominant with the copresence of carbohydrate moieties. Therefore, the skin of splendid squid, a byproduct from squid processing, can be an alternative source for collagen production.

    A Mathematical Method for Eliminating Spin Losses in Toroidal Traction Drives (2015)

    Beschreibung: The efficiency of the original Toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT) is limited due to the spin losses caused by the different speed distribution in the contact area. To overcome this drawback, this paper replaces the original working surface with a new surface derived from a differential equation and proposes a novel Logarithmic CVT. Equations and ranges of the transmission ratio range, half-cone-angle, and conformity ratio, which are essential geometrical parameters of the Logarithmic CVT, are derived. A set of geometrical parameters is further recommended. With such geometrical parameters, the transmission ratio range of the Logarithmic CVT is as wide as that of the Half-Toroidal CVT. The two types of CVTs are compared with each other in terms of efficiency based on a widely accepted computational model. The results show that efficiency of the Logarithmic CVT is higher than that of Half-Toroidal CVT except for some particular situations because of the thrust bearing losses.

    Markerless Augmented Reality via Stereo Video See-Through Head-Mounted Display Device (2015)

    Beschreibung: Conventionally, the camera localization for augmented reality (AR) relies on detecting a known pattern within the captured images. In this study, a markerless AR scheme has been designed based on a Stereo Video See-Through Head-Mounted Display (HMD) device. The proposed markerless AR scheme can be utilized for medical applications such as training, telementoring, or preoperative explanation. Firstly, a virtual model for AR visualization is aligned to the target in physical space by an improved Iterative Closest Point (ICP) based surface registration algorithm, with the target surface structure reconstructed by a stereo camera pair; then, a markerless AR camera localization method is designed based on the Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi (KLT) feature tracking algorithm and the Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) correction algorithm. Our AR camera localization method is shown to be better than the traditional marker-based and sensor-based AR environment. The demonstration system was evaluated with a plastic dummy head and the display result is satisfactory for a multiple-view observation.

    Canards Existence in FitzHugh-Nagumo and Hodgkin-Huxley Neuronal Models (2015)

    Beschreibung: In a previous paper we have proposed a new method for proving the existence of “canard solutions” for three- and four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems with only one fast variable which improves the methods used until now. The aim of this work is to extend this method to the case of four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems with two slow and two fast variables. This method enables stating a unique generic condition for the existence of “canard solutions” for such four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems which is based on the stability of folded singularities (pseudo singular points in this case) of the normalized slow dynamics deduced from a well-known property of linear algebra. This unique generic condition is identical to that provided in previous works. Application of this method to the famous coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo equations and to the Hodgkin-Huxley model enables showing the existence of “canard solutions” in such systems.

    Bilevel Programming Model of Private Capital Investment in Urban Public Transportation: Case Study of Jinan City (2015)

    Beschreibung: Increasing public transportation subsidies have created fiscal pressures for governments. To ease this financial pressure, Chinese government strongly encourages private capital investment in public transportation. However, previous private capital investments in public transportation operations have largely failed, mainly due to low ticket fares that cannot support sustainable operations. To address this issue, several previous research projects have developed methods to facilitate private capital investment. The majority of the research focuses on qualitative analysis and value for money analysis. Our research proposed a new method of private capital investment in public transportation operations based on the concept of “passenger value.” The feasibility of the proposed method of private investment was analyzed quantitatively by constructing a bilevel programming model. The model was verified based on a sample analysis of Jinan city traffic. Results showed that effective private capital investment increases the total societal benefit from the public transportation system and additionally that the investment method considering “passenger value” is superior to the traditional one. A quantitative tool was provided by the model to evaluate private capital investment effects, design investment policies, and develop further research.

    Discrete-Time Orthogonal Spline Collocation Method for One-Dimensional Sine-Gordon Equation (2015)

    Beschreibung: We present a discrete-time orthogonal spline collocation scheme for the one-dimensional sine-Gordon equation. This scheme uses Hermite basis functions to approximate the solution throughout the spatial domain on each time level. The convergence rate with order in norm and stability of the scheme are proved. Numerical results are presented and compared with analytical solutions to confirm the accuracy of the presented scheme.
