Notes: Abstract The Herbst corpuscle, found only in birds, is one of the morphologically distinct types of lamellated sensory nerve endings. Its response properties were studied electrophysiologically in anesthetized pigeons by recording from: (A) afferents emerging from single Herbst corpuscles located in the interosseous region of the shank, (B) from vibration-sensitive cells found in the dorsal root ganglia near the lumbosacral enlargement of the spinal cord, and (C) from nerve fibers dissected out of the sciatic nerve. Vibration-sensitive cells in the dorsal root ganglia and in sciatic nerve fibers exhibited properties that were very similar to those found at the Herbst corpuscle itself. All three recording approaches indicated that Herbst corpuscles are vibration-sensitive mechano-receptors with broad bandpass tuning curves. With all approaches, the lowest threshold always fell in the frequency range between 400 and 800 Hz. The value of the threshold, however, varied with the method, being as low as 0.08 μm with method C and as high as 1 μm with method A. Regardless of method, these neurons exhibited no spontaneous activity, and their firing displayed a special sensory coding pattern at high stimulus amplitude: the nerve impulses were phase locked to the stimulus cycle, exhibiting a 1:1 relationship with it up to a frequency of 500 Hz. Comparison of these data with prior behavioral data suggests that the Herbst corpuscle peripheral mechanoreceptors are part of a vibratory sensory system which acts as a warning device, given attentive behavior.

Notes: Abstract The SIRENE macroseismic database has been utilized to draw isoseismal maps for the 140 best-documented French earthquakes, characterized by epicentral intensities of at least V (MSK) and located in all parts of the country. A study of focal depths derived from available local intensity data using an intensity versus distance decay law (Sponheuer) shows that the focal depths of most of the events considered do not exceed about 10 km. Their distribution correlates fairly well with regional dynamic geology features. A relationship is then computed between magnitude, intensity and focal distance, based on 73 instrumenta]ly recorded earthquakes (M L between 3.3 and 6.3) and on 217 mean radius values (from 2 to 380 km) for isoseismals of intensity VIII to III (MSK). This relationship is applied to historical earthquakes contained in the database SIRENE which are characterised by their intensity only. These results are used in the evaluation as well deterministic as probabilistic of the seismic hazard on the national territory.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the 12 October 1992 Cairo earthquake relates to the spatial geometry of the northern Egyptian fault systems. A box-counting algorithm was used, in a focused down approach (from regional to local scales) to analyze the fractal dimensions of the existing faults. The results indicate that these faults display fractal geometries that are self-similar over two to three orders of magnitude. It is shown that the northwest-southeast (Northern Red Sea) trending fault system has the lowest fractal dimension value. Coincidentally, this fault trend is the one that the fault plane solution shows to be active.

Notes: Abstract A study involving a collaborative effort between American and Mexican social scientists was made of the individual and organizational response to the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City. Our general findings only about the activities of organizations are summarized under five general themes: (1) the massive and complex organizational response was decentralized, (2) resources for organizational actions were not problematical but there were difficulties in their quick and effective use, (3) the dominant organizational behavior was emergent rather than traditional, (4) organizational personnel carried out their work and occupational roles, and (5) there was changes in disaster planning of organizations as a result of the disaster. Both practical and theoretical implications of our research findings are noted.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this paper is to define the macroseismic field of the 5 May 1990 Potenza earthquake, analysing about 3000 questionnaire forms together with the results of the direct inquiries carried out in the field. The study evidences the seismic vulnerability of the Potenza district and of the whole of southern Italy in general, due to the low resistance characteristics of the old constructions and a lack of seismic prevention. Besides, geomorphological failure increases hazardous situations at the earthquake's occurrence. This earthquake provided a good test for checking and improving the ING macroseismic data collection procedures.

Notes: Abstract This paper gives macroseismic and instrumental data on the 17 August 1983 Kamchatka earthquake which occurred in the center of the Kamchatka Gulf bend at a depth of 98 km with an epicentral intensity of VI–VII (MSK-64 scale), energy class 15, and magnitude MLH = 6.9. The focal mechanism represents a thrust along the inclined surface across the strike of the Kamchatka Gulf coastal line. The Primary-wave seismic moment M 0 is 6.3 × 1019 Nm, the Rayleigh wave M 0 is 1.6 × 1019 Nm, and the stress drop is 2.5 MPa. Copies of displacement and acceleration records are presented and the temporal and spatial distribution of the aftershocks is analyzed.

Notes: Abstract The new procedure of earthquake hazard evaluation developed by Kijko and Sellevoll is tested and applied for the border region of Czechoslovakia and Poland. The new method differs from the conventional approach. It incorporates the uncertainty of earthquake magnitudes, and accepts mixed data containing only large historical events and recent, complete catalogues. Seismic hazard has been calculated for nine regions determined in the border area. In the investigated area, data of historical catalogues are uncertain or, in many cases, the epicentral intensities are unknown. Thus, a number of assumptions have to be adopted in data preparation of catalogues since the year 1200. The calculated values of parameters b in the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-intensity relation as well as the return periods, seem to be reasonable and are generally confirmed by the results obtained from catalogues for the last 80–130 years.

Notes: Abstract A radon concentration measurement survey was carried out in Ecuador using the SSNTD technique. The data analysis shows a definite radon anomaly prior to March 6, 1987;M=6.9 earthquake. Anomalies found before October 18 and October 28th mild earthquakes in 1986 could be correlated with these events. Other anomalies that we cannot correlate with any geophysical event were also found.
