    Notes: The existence of high-density, nearly-structureless bedrock buried by relatively low-density sediments makes gravity prospecting a very informative technique for bedrock-topography studies of the northern Appalachian Plateaus. Locating bedrock exposures and using available well data reduces the area of the gravity search. Depths to bedrock from wells correlate excellently with depths from gravity anomalies. The minimum anomaly detected was 0·18 milligal, corresponding to a depth of approximately 40 feet.

    Notes: A comparative study was undertaken on the decay rates of three bacterial types (S. typhimurium, E. coli and S. faecalis), an enterovirus (poliovirus type 1) and a bacterial phage (f2) in ground water maintained under laboratory conditions. Except for f2 phage, all the microorganisms tested were relatively stable in ground water. S. faecalis survived best among all the bacteria tested and its decay rate was similar to that of poliovirus type 1.Under field conditions, bacterial indicators were also found to be stable in the ground-water environment. The decay rate for fecal streptococci was lower than for fecal or total coliforms in the shallow wells.

    Notes: A technique has been developed for the determination of the exchangeable cation population of calcareous sandy material with cation exchange capacities of less than 1 meq/100 g. The technique involves the addition of exchange salt in the dry state to samples of porous media using original pore water as the exchange salt solvent. In applying this technique to samples from below the water table, the amount of pore water available for reaction is reduced by centrifuging in the field to bring the moisture content close to field capacity values. By utilizing the minimum amount of pore water, interferences during the exchange process due to calcite precipitation or dissolution are minimized. The extent of calcite dissolution or precipitation that occurs can be appraised by measuring alkalinity or total carbon on the pore water before and after addition of the exchange salt. Three salts, NH4C1, CsCl and LiCl were tested for their suitability for this technique. CsCl was found to be preferable because of its low tendency to dissolve carbonate and the preference of Cs+ on exchange sites.Application of the method to a field site in southern Ontario yielded a value of 0.51 ± 0·09 meq/100 g over 15 samples for the cation exchange capacity of a near surface glaciofluvial sand deposit. It is believed that this technique could be applied with reasonable accuracy and reproducibility to materials with exchange capacities of as low as 0·1 meq/100 g.

    Notes: The upconing of the salt-water interface in an unconfined coastal aquifer due to water withdrawal by an infiltration gallery is analyzed numerically based on the variational formulation of the problem. Sometimes in coastal areas, from the point of view of safe withdrawal of water on a long-term basis, the use of an infiltration gallery is found to be feasible in preventing severe upconing of the interface that would have resulted from heavy pumpage by a vertical well. The numerical procedure presented here is capable of delineating profiles of the free surface and interface along with the length of the outflow face and quantity of freshwater flow to the sea. Full consideration of the nonlinear boundary conditions on the free surface and interface is included for a steady flow towards a gallery in both isotropic and anisotropic aquifers. The extent of upconing of the interface under different operating conditions of the gallery for different aquifer geometries has been studied. A general understanding of the flow phenomenon in the vicinity of the gallery has been established. The results of the analysis can be used to plan a water withdrawal scheme without causing contamination by salt water.

    Notes: The streambed-leakage factor ranged from 0.11 to 1.68 million gallons per day per acre per foot of head loss. Most values for the streambed infiltration rate and the streambed-leakage factor for six tests before 1970 were higher than for six tests in 1976–79, suggesting a change in streambed permeability in the intervening time.A well field to serve a government-owned uranium enrichment facility, consisting initially of 4 wells, later increased to 15 wells, was designed to yield up to 20 million gallons per day. The wells are on a line parallel to the river at distances from the stream ranging from 122 to 330 feet. Distance between wells ranges from 190 to 303 feet. Specific capacities of the wells, based on 24-hour acceptance tests, ranged from 63 to 147 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown and averaged 100 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. By late Summer of 1976, pumpage from all 15 wells ranged from 12 to 15 million gallons per day. Drawdown was about as expected, based on design criteria developed from the aquifer tests, except that pumping levels were lower than expected in the Fall and Winter of 1976–77, resulting from low streamflow and low river temperature.

    Notes: Vast deposits of oil shale are contained in the Piceance basin in northwestern Colorado. The basin may contain as much as 40 million acre-feet of stored water associated with these deposits, much of which may have to be drained for mining. Yet, most analyses of watersupply for oil-shale development have focused on surface water with only brief mention of ground water.This study used a synthetic streamflow model to investigate the effects of using conservative estimates of ground water on the required active storage capacity of a hypothetical reservoir on the White River. Results of the study indicate that use of ground water from mine drainage and/or auxiliary wells may have a significant impact on the size and timing of surface-water reservoirs. Thus, ground water may be an important source of supply, particularly during early development of an oil-shale industry. The study results strongly suggest that further investigations are needed on the physical availability of ground water as well as the institutional, legal and waterquality constraints on its use.

    Notes: Egypt is presently involved in a comprehensive program of land reclamation. Surface water has already been exhausted in meeting the urgent needs of agricultural expansion. If irrigation efficiency were increased, large amounts of surface water would be saved. However, this entails complex social, technical and political problems outside the scope of this paper. Ground-water development has priority over increasing irrigation efficiency (which would take a longer time).This paper deals with identification of the intruded salt-water wedge in the huge artesian Delta aquifer. The case is unique because most of this aquifer is invaded by salt water, and the major portion of its annual ground-water recharge is derived from the direct seepage from the Nile River and the huge net of irrigation canals serving about 3 million acres (∼ 11,561 km2) of fertile land, as well as the infiltration of excess irrigation water. The annual overall ground-water recharge to the aquifer was estimated as 6·40 km3/yr as explained later.Methods of salt-water control and various techniques of water resources management are discussed in this paper. Because of the great variation in the depth of the aquifer, two unconventional methods for identifying the salt-water wedge are also presented.

    Notes: A numerical model of flow and transport in the vicinity of Price's Landfill and the Atlantic City public water-supply wells is used to estimate the extent of the existing contamination problem. Model parameters such as boundary conditions, pumping rates, permeability, and dispersivity are varied to demonstrate the sensitivity of the model to these quantities. A historical simulation of the past ten years of contamination is obtained and two schemes for remediation of the contamination problem are compared. In the light of this work, additional data requirements are revealed.

    Notes: Ion-exchange high performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet absorption detection is shown to be a rapid and sensitive method for analysis of some common anions in water. Sensitivity of measurement is approximately 50 ppb for NO−2, NO−3, Br−, I−, and SCN− while Cl− has a detection limit in the one to ten ppm range. Chromatograms require 8 to 13 minutes to complete. Analyses are performed on either of two stationary phases (Whatman SAX 10 μm or Brownlee anion exchange) depending on the anions of interest in the analysis and their interferences.

    Notes: Vertical electrical soundings using DC resistivity methods have been completed along over 60 miles of survey lines in southwest Florida. The resistivity soundings were obtained in order to outline major hydrogeologic features as part of a regional hydrogeologic investigation covering approximately 400 square miles. The two significant hydrogeologic features which can be effectively mapped on a regional scale by DC methods are the presence of shallow, high resistivity limestones associated with late Tertiary reef complexes, and the approximate depth to waters with TDS concentrations well above the potable water limits. The reef limestones commonly exhibit very high transmissivities and are potential sites for ground-water development. The approximate thickness of potable waters allows resource investigations to be limited to the most promising areas and a rough assessment of the total resource to be made for long-term planning. The interpretation and mapping of the resistivity section is accomplished through published resistivity inversion and computer graphics programs. This automated data processing produces resistivity maps and sections without requiring extensive geophysical training of the interpreter. The automatic interpretations compare well with more traditional master curve interpretation procedures, and have the same limitations with equivalence of solutions and geologic correlation, but are produced with considerably less effort.

    Notes: Entrenchment and subsequent filling of a glacial valley have led to localization of iron-enriched ground water in the Silurian carbonate aquifer at the Vistron plant, Lima, Ohio. All production wells are open exclusively to the carbonate aquifer. Water from the saturated glacial deposits of relatively low permeability and high ironcontent is drawn laterally into the more permeable carbonate aquifer containing water with relatively low concentrations of iron. Wells closest to the saturated glacial deposits yield water with iron concentrations greater than 1.4 milligrams per liter. These wells, in the southwestern part of the site, apparently form a sink preventing iron-enriched water from migrating into other pumping wells in the central and northern parts of the area.Iron concentrations have not increased in individual wells between 1971 and 1981. They are not expected to increase in the central and northern wells as long as about 20% of the plant's ground water is withdrawn from at least two of the southwestern wells.

    Notes: Nitrate-N concentrations during the Summers of 1980 and 1981 exceeded 10 mg/1 in 68 of the 164 ground-water samples collected from a shallow water-table aquifer underlying a sand plain near Alliston, Ontario. Three extensive zones of nitrate contamination were associated with major potato-growing areas on the sand plain. Nitrate concentrations were positively correlated with both the percentage area of heavily fertilized crops (potatoes, corn, sod and asparagus) and nitrogen fertilizer application rates in the vicinity of ground-water sampling sites. Chloride levels in ground water exhibited a positive association with KCl fertilizer application rates. Ground water under potato fields had relatively consistent C1/NO3-N ratios despite considerable variations in nitrate-N and chloride concentrations. Ground water with a low nitrate content was found beneath forest and permanent pasture. These data suggest that the use of commercial nitrogen fertilizer is a major source of nitrate in the aquifer.

    Notes: Three simplistic models are developed for evaluating the transport of organic pollutants through soil to ground water. The models consider mobility and first-order degradation. The first calculates linear sorption/desorption of the pollutant and first-order degradation without considering dispersion. The second is similar to the first but also considers dispersion. The third considers nonlinear sorption following a Freundlich equation and first-order degradation but does not consider dispersion. The models are compared to field data for the pesticides aldicarb and DDT. The models projected a lower mobility for DDT than was observed in the field.

    Notes: Darcy's equation and unsaturated-flow theory are used to calculate flow through earth linings that are placed in ponds or channels to reduce seepage. The procedure utilizes the relation between unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and pressure head of the underlying material as calculated from the measured saturated hydraulic conductivity and the relation between water content and pressure head. The method enables the selection of the liner (thickness and hydraulic conductivity) that will keep seepage below a certain maximum limit. Since the hydraulic conductivity of clays is affected by the cationic composition and the salt concentration of the soil solution, the chemical composition of the liquid moving through the liner must be taken into account. This applies also to other chemicals, including solvents and other organic compounds that may be in the water. Travel times of water from the surface impoundment to the underlying ground water are calculated from the seepage rate and the corresponding water content in the vadose zone. Accumulation of solids (mine tailings, for example) can further reduce the seepage from the pond. Proper design of waste-water ponds also requires analysis of the response of the underlying ground water (mound buildup) and the movement of pollutants in the vadose zone and aquifer. In view of the high costs of earth liners, prediction of the seepage is necessary to make sure that the selected lining material, the thickness of the liner itself, and the method of construction will produce the desired results.

    Notes: A multidimensional, finite-difference model for ground-water flow and heat transport is used to analyze the thermal energy storage experiment conducted by Auburn University in Mobile, Alabama. The experiment consisted of three stages–namely, injection, storage and recovery occurring for 80, 51 and 41 days, respectively. This application demonstrates the validation evidence that the model adequately and accurately simulates the field experiment. The numerical model includes the effects of: hydraulic anisotropy, thermal convection and conduction, and heat loss to the adjacent confining strata. Observed aquifer isotherms at the end of each stage are compared with predicted values on a cylindrical grid situated about the well. The degree of vertical discretization used in the model is shown to impact the predicted temperature profiles at each stage, but has minimal effect on the recovery water temperature.

    Notes: The majority of well fields in the river region in the Netherlands, where anaerobic water is withdrawn from the shallow aquifer, have problems with well clogging. In order to test the supposition that sulfate-reducing bacteria play a role in this clogging process, sulfate-reducing bacteria in water from wells on well fields with and without the occurrence of clogging were enumerated. In water withdrawn from nonclogging wells, the Most Probable Number of sulfate-reducing bacteria averaged 5 per 100 ml, whereas in wells subject to clogging, the number averaged 25 per 100 ml. A statistical analysis by Wilcoxon's order test confirmed that a significant difference exists between the numbers of sulfate-reducing bacteria in clogging and nonclogging wells. The mechanism whereby sulfate-reducing bacteria contribute towards this type of well clogging is as yet unclear.

    Notes: The Kansas Geological Survey is pursuing an effort to automate some of the more common methods of aquifer pumping-test analysis. This paper discusses the results of work done on the leaky artesian aquifer as defined by Hantush and Jacob (1955). The paper covers the basic theory of the aquifer type, the numerical solution of the leaky artesian-well function, and the methodology of achieving the “best fit” parameters in the least squares' sense. Several data sets are used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed technique. These examples indicate the generally satisfactory results produced by the automated analysis documented here.The algorithm has good convergence properties. Initial estimates for the aquifer parameters may vary by about three orders of magnitude above or below the correct values. For typical data sets the rms fitting error should be less than a few tenths of a foot. If this is not the case, one is probably not dealing with a simple leaky aquifer. This method of pumping-test analysis does not eliminate the role of an experienced hydrologist to define the local hydrogeology and aquifer type. However, once the decision is made as to which aquifer configuration is being observed, this program will, in a quick and unbiased fashion, give an accurate assessment of the leaky-aquifer parameters within the limits of the theoretical approximations and the data quality.

    Notes: In the design of ground-water heat pump systems the quantitative analysis of heat transport and heat storage is of great interest. A unified finite element approach to the transient nonlinear heat transport and heat storage problem is presented. The theory presented includes nonlinear physical properties and boundary conditions, coupled conductive and convective heat flow, freezing (phase change), and time-dependent heat input and output. The given theory is applied to two problems. The first problem is a transient study during a few years of heat storage in saturated clay. A pure conductive theory is used due to the small amount of convective water flow in clay. The second problem deals with transient heat transport in an aquifer according to coupled conduction-convection theory on a one-dimensional model problem.

    Notes: The principal water-bearing units (in descending stratigraphie order) in Pipeline Canyon are the alluvium, the Dilco Coal Member of the Crevasse Canyon Formation, the Torrivio Sandstone Member of the Gallup Formation, and the Upper and Lower Gallup Sandstones. Presently, the alluvium is recharged by a perennial, southward-flowing stream sustained by mine dewatering discharge in addition to natural precipitation and runoff. Localized infiltration has created ground-water mounds in the alluvium. Artesian conditions may exist in sandstone units which are adjacent and hydraulically connected to the alluvium in these areas. Basement faults have produced the Fort Wingate and Pipeline Canyon lineaments which intersect in the area of investigation. Fault-related fracturing of the sandstones allows for significant ground-water recharge via the overlying alluvium. Flow in the sedimentary formations is generally to the northeast, while the alluvial system flows to the southwest. The natural water quality for the aquifers in the area is dominated by sodium and sulfate ions. However, complete characterization of the natural water quality is complex because of ground-water contamination by acidic tailings fluids from a local uranium mill.

    Notes: Two earthfill sections of Wallace Dam on the Oconee River near Eatonton, Georgia were constructed with vertical drainage filters (chimney drains) in a clay fill zone. In order to evaluate the performance of the filter in the west dike of Wallace Dam, the finite element Galerkin method was utilized in formulating a numerical model to study the steady-state saturated-unsaturated seepage characteristics through the earth dam. The resulting model is applied to Station 58+00 of the west dike of Wallace Dam. Numerical results for the four cases analyzed in this study describe the location of the zero pressure isobar and total hydraulic head values ranging from 425 feet (130 m) to 365 feet (111 m). Model results indicate a maximum seepage velocity of 2.62 feet per day (0.80 m/day) using a saturated horizontal hydraulic conductivity of 0.283 foot per day (8.64 cm/day). A maximum seepage rate is calculated to be 0.266 cubic foot per second (7.52 × 10−3 m3/sec). Analysis of the hydrostatic uplift forces along the base of the dam indicates an average pressure head reduction of 51 feet (16 m) from the upstream to the downstream side of the dam. Comparison of local seepage velocities to the critical seepage velocity upstream of the filter and inside the filter indicate a factor of safety against piping (a factor of safety against a quick condition arising in the soil) ranging from 0.3 to 3.7.

    Notes: The ground-water observation well network in many parts of Kansas has been developed and expanded through the years without serious attempt to determine the adequacy of the network for any specified purpose or to assess its cost effectiveness. This study was undertaken to examine the existing well network in northwest Kansas and to determine the arrangement that offers the most satisfactory accuracy for the purpose of monitoring it. To achieve this goal, we have employed the theory of regionalized variables to estimate the amount of spatial variability of the water table. The error analysis produced by universal kriging indicates that a significant reduction in the number of wells could be achieved by employing a regular 4-mile (6.4-km) network, without affecting the present level of accuracy. It also indicates that it is not practical to reduce the estimation error in the water-table surface uniformly throughout the region because to do so would increase the cost of monitoring wells drastically. For example, reducing the presently existing error by 50 percent throughout the area would require 16 times more wells than the currently existing well network.

    Notes: In river basins where aquifers are closely interrelated with a stream, large-scale ground-water development can lower water tables near the stream and diminish stream flows. Junior surface right holders are adversely affected. A digital computer simulation of the hydrologic-economic system on the lower South Platte River in Colorado is employed to study economic impacts of two water management policies. Open access management is found to yield high income benefits but imposes substantial costs on surface-water users when water supplies are limited. Incorporation of ground water into the appropriation system can help avoid the losses to surface-water users, but greatly reduces the income of ground-water users.

    Notes: Basalts are a major source of ground water throughout the Columbia River Plateau region of the Pacific Northwest. Development and management of ground water in these basalts are complicated by the spatial variability of the hydrologic characteristics of the deep, stratified lava flows, but new irrigation developments and municipal and industrial water needs are placing increasingly larger demands on the ground-water resource. Water management decisions are aided by individual basin studies that contribute to greater understanding of the regional ground-water system. A distributed-system multiple-storage model for the Deschutes River Basin, Oregon, reveals the magnitude of spatial differences in ground-water recharge, storage, and discharge for this watershed. Input-output analysis elucidates the functional characteristics of the basin groundwater system, and it identifies the presence and magnitude of interbasin linkages in the ground-water system. Implementation of ground-water development strategies based on storage and transmission characteristics simulated by the model demonstrates that basin or regional perspectives are necessary to fully utilize ground-water storage in basalts.

    Notes: Increased activity in the fields of ground-water geology and hydrology has focused attention on the academic preparations required of a geologist or engineer planning to enter the field of ground water. In an effort to improve understanding of the educational facilities available in the United States and Canada, the Research Committee of the Technical Division of the National Water Well Association is periodically inquiring into the status of these facilities.To arrive at a better understanding of the formal course work in ground water, a seven-item questionnaire was circulated to appropriate educational institutions in May 1960. A report, “Educational and Academic Research Facilities in Ground-Water Geology and Hydrology in the United States and Canada”, was published in May 1961 summarizing the information obtained from returned questionnaires. A similar survey was made in May 1963 to obtain data on advancements in educational facilities in ground water since 1960.This report, a contribution of the Technical Division of NWWA, is based on questionnaires completed in 1963 and provides statistical data on university and college facilities in the field of ground water. Detailed information is presented on 1) course work, 2) textbooks, 3) degrees granted, 4) descriptions of departments offering course work, 5) course instructors and 6) student training and employment. Recent advancements in educational facilities are summarized. It is hoped that the statistical and descriptive information embodied in this report will provide a suitable background for those who wish to assess the adequacy of available educational facilities in ground-water geology and hydrology.

In a special reverse circulation rig, the percussion bit, consisting of a tube with external welded blades, slides up and down on the outside of the hollow drill pipes, while the hollow drill pipes remain still.     Notes: Predictions of where and how a fluid waste may travel from disposal site to the water table require detailed information on the physical characteristics, location, and extent of all pervious and impervious materials in the unsaturated zone. Principles concerning the flow system in the unsaturated zone indicate the importance of choice of disposal technique in predicting the time required for the fluid waste to traverse the distance to the water table. With appropriate data on the location, extent, and physical properties of water-bearing materials and on the boundaries of the saturated zone flow system, it is possible to analyze the relative merits of a variety of waste disposal techniques and to describe the probable consequences of each. Environments of consolidated rocks, such as granites, sandstones, and limestones, pose problems in addition to those related to unconsolidated or granular porous media in defining the fluid-flow regimes that involve joint patterns, fracture patterns, solutional openings, and the rock structure.The consequences of ground-water contamination can be just as damaging to water users as the pollution of surface streams. In fact it can be argued that the consequences are far more damaging because they persist over much longer periods of time after the contaminating source has been eliminated. It would appear prudent, therefore, to guard against contamination of the ground-water resource in the first instance, rather than to engage in long expensive rehabilitation measures after the damage has been done.In 1960 Graham Walton presented data concerning contamination, by sewage or other man-made wastes, of surface and underground waters. The circumstances attending the reported incidents of contamination, especially those involving ground-water supplies, have aided materially in the choice of a few principles and ideas that will identify the role of some significant hydrologic factors in the underground movement of fluid wastes.Walton's discussion of ground-water contamination refers often to physical settings into which fluid wastes are discharged at or near the land surface into cesspools, tile-drain fields, and holding ponds.     Notes: Future water-level declines in deep sandstone wells penetrating the Cambrian-Ordovician Aquifer, the most highly developed aquifer for large ground-water supplies in the Chicago region, are considered. The Cambrian-Ordovician Aquifer is encountered at an average depth of about 500 feet below the land surface at Chicago; it has an average thickness of 1000 feet and is composed chiefly of sandstones and dolomites. Recharge is received from overlying glacial deposits in areas averaging 47 miles west of Chicago and from leakage through a shale confining bed.Geohydrologic conditions are simulated by a model aquifer, i. e., a semi-infinite rectilinear strip of sandstones and dolomites 84 miles wide and 1000 feet thick. The model aquifer is bounded by a recharge boundary 47 miles west of Chicago and by two intersecting barrier boundaries 37 miles east and 60 miles south of Chicago, and is overlain by a confining bed consisting mostly of shale averaging 200 feet thick. The hydraulic properties of the model aquifer and its confining bed, the image-well theory, and appropriate ground-water formulas are used to construct a mathematical model which provides a means of evaluating the practical sustained yield of the aquifer and predicting future water-level declines. Records of past pumpage and water levels establish the validity of this mechanism as a model of the response of the aquifer to heavy pumping.Pumpage from deep sandstone wells concentrated in six pumping centers has increased from 200,000 gallons per day (gpd) in 1864 to 96.5 millions of gallons per day (mgd) in 1961. As a result of heavy pumping, water levels in deep sandstone wells declined more than 650 feet at Chicago between 1864 and 1961.The maximum amount of water that can be continually withdrawn from existing pumping centers without creating critical water levels or exceeding recharge is estimated to be about 46 mgd. Withdrawals from the Cambrian-Ordovician Aquifer have exceeded the practical sustained yield since 1959. It is estimated that about 65 mgd could be obtained by shifting one existing pumping center toward the west and by adding 2 new pumping centers north and northwest of Chicago.Unless lake water is made available to those areas with short supply a pumpage increase from 96.5 mgd in 1961 to 243 mgd in 2010 can be expected. Using this pumpage increase and taking into consideration dewatering of portions of upper units of the aquifer, declines in nonpumping water levels that may be expected between 1963 and 2010 at existing pumping centers were computed by using the mathematical model.Pumping water levels in most pumping centers will be at critical stages a few feet above the top of the lowermost and most productive unit of the aquifer by 2010.

    Notes: Ground-water flow models developed for the flow systems around Bass Lake and Nepco Lake, Wisconsin, show that models can be useful tools for estimating lake seepage rates. A two-dimensional profile model for Bass Lake illustrates that the ratio of horizontal to vertical hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer around the lake is related to both the magnitude of vertical hydraulic gradients near the lake and the distribution of seepage from the lake as a function of distance from shore. The model also shows that it is important to know the vertical hydraulic conductivity of littoral lake-bed sediments to estimate lake seepage rates.A three-dimensional model constructed for an unusual ground-water flow system around Nepco Lake provides a more realistic simulation of the flow system than does a comparable two-dimensional model. Both models were useful for identifying additional data that could be used to quantify the ground-water portion of the lake's water budget more accurately. It is suggested that a combination of two-and/or three-dimensional models could be used to estimate seepage rates at many lakes for which sufficient data exist.

    Notes: A digital model of a buried channel aquifer contaminated by hydrocarbons is used to evaluate development alternatives. The response to ground-water pumping is critical because the hydrocarbons cause taste and odor problems. The source of contamination is an abandoned pit used to dispose of coal tar residues from an old coal-gas plant. The hydrocarbon residues overflowed the pit, migrated a short distance and seeped into flood plain soils. The downward movement of the hydrocarbons stopped at the water table but some dissolved into the ground water. Three general approaches taken to evaluate management alternatives include: (1) regulation of pumping of the city wells and of drawdown, and recovery periods are considered and the model stressed with various pumping rates and times; (2) construction of a pumping trough barrier is considered and a hypothetical control well is simulated; (3) new well field developments in various locations are considered. Results suggest that there is no way to prevent movement of contaminants to the well field. The only feasible solution is the removal of coal tar residues from the source area and construction of a pumping trough barrier.

    Notes: Increased attention is being directed toward the investigation of tight zones in relation to the storage and disposal of hazardous wastes. Shut-in tests, slug tests, and pressure-slug tests are being used at the proposed Waste Isolation Pilot Plant site, located in southeastern New Mexico, to evaluate the fluid-transmitting properties of several zones above the proposed repository zone. Apparatus used to conduct these tests includes a pressure-transducer system connected to a recording device at the land surface. All three testing methods were used in various combinations to obtain values for the hydraulic properties of the test zones. Multiple testing on the same zone produced similar results. Transmissivities determined by these tests range from 0.00001 to 10 feet squared per day (.000001 to 1 meter squared per day).

    Notes: Organic solvents, including 1,1,1-trichloroethane at concentrations up to 40,000 ppb, were detected in the Old Bridge aquifer under an industrial plant in South Brunswick Township, New Jersey. A hydrogeologic investigation defined the ground-water flow system and a plume of contamination which extended, at a concentration of at least 100 ppb, for a distance of about 1000 feet down-gradient of the plant. A contamination abatement system was designed and installed to prevent this plume from reaching a municipal well located about 2500 feet from the site. The system includes seven extraction wells and a water treatment facility. The locations of the extraction wells and their combined pumping rate were determined in part by a computer simulation of the aquifer, which was subsequently checked by a 20-day pumping test of the system. The on-site treatment facility uses two cooling towers in series to air-strip the volatile organics, and two infiltration ponds to return the treated water to the aquifer. The abatement system has been operating for about 10 months. Ground-water monitoring results show that the plume is now significantly smaller and less concentrated than before the abatement system was installed. It is projected that in several years the aquifer will be largely decontaminated.

    Notes: Pumpage from shallow aquifers, primarily dolomite bedrock, in northeastern Illinois has exceeded estimates of ground-water recharge in extensive areas creating concern that ground-water recharge estimates are too low. Pumpage increased 92 percent during the period 1966-1978 and was 61.7 million gallons per day (2.33 × 108 liters/day) during 1978. During the period 1966-1979 water level declines exceeded 30 feet (9.14 meters) in some areas. Based on a ground-water budget study, it was determined that recharge estimates were in the right order of magnitude and pumpage in excess of recharge was balanced by water taken out of storage from the shallow aquifers. A specific yield of 0.017 was determined for the dolomite bedrock aquifer based on the ground-water budget study.

    Notes: Thirty-three wells and two springs yielding high chloride water from granitic rocks define a northwesttrending lineament, which extends for 60 miles (100 km) along the western Sierra Nevada foothills of Fresno and Madera Counties. Geochemical evidence indicates that many of the constituents in this water are marine connate in origin. However, the connate water has been strongly diluted with meteoric water. The connate water is believed to have been derived from Paleozoic and early Mesozoic marine clastic rocks (now metamorphosed) in the Sierra Nevada. The lineament marks the location where marine connate water has migrated upward from these rocks along an eastward-dipping fault zone. A capping of granitic rocks has enhanced the persistence of this connate water for millions of years. The lineament may be structurally related to the Oakhurst-Fine Gold fault zone, which it parallels for approximately 15 miles (25 km). There is a remarkable correlation in the Oakhurst area between wells yielding high-chloride water and fracture trends determined from aerial photographs. High chloride ground water is present only in topographically low areas, where little flushing by meteoric water has been possible.

    Notes: The major water-bearing units in the Houston district are the Chicot and Evangeline aquifer systems. Both systems consist of discontinuous layers of unconsolidated sand (aquifers) separated by clay layers.Extensive pumping has caused large declines of potentiometric surfaces in and around Houston. The declines have caused both the compaction of clay layers, which has resulted in land-surface subsidence, and the movement of salt water towards Houston.During the early 1960's, an electric analog model of the district was made. The model simulated water-level declines; but more importantly, the model indicated that the available data and conceptual model of the hydrologic system, consisting of two aquifers, were not totally adequate to allow simulation of the ground-water systems.During the early 1970's, a second electric analog was built. The second model used new data and a conceptual model consisting of two aquifer systems simulated water-level declines quite accurately, but the model was unable to accurately simulate the spatial distribution of water yielded from clay storage.A digital model was then developed during 1979 to simulate the hydrology of the district. The digital model used five layers and accurately simulated the hydraulic heads in both aquifer systems and land-surface subsidence.

    Notes: The geochemistry of a very permeable ground-water system containing calcium sulfate was studied to determine the present rate of dissolution. An estimate was made of the chemical composition of water recharging the system and the difference between that estimate and the composition of the ground water in the system was used to determine the minimum amount of calcium sulfate being dissolved under existing hydrologic conditions. This result was used, with published data on rates of calcium-sulfate dissolution, to determine the effective surface area involved in solution processes. Results indicate that flow in this system is through large solution openings, which are growing larger at a rate of a few tens of millimeters per year.

    Notes: Enjebi Island on Enewetak Atoll has been the site of extensive hydrological, geological and geophysical studies. Tidal lag, tidal efficiency and water levels have been measured in 24 wells ranging in depth from one m to 90 m (3–290 ft). Hydraulic conductivity has been measured both on laboratory samples and by aquifer testing in the field. Theoretical ground-water tidal responses have been calculated using a model based on horizontal propagation of tidal signals. Comparison of field observations and model results indicates that the observed results are not consistent with horizontal tidal propagation and that the hydraulics of the system are probably controlled by vertical coupling between the unconsolidated surface aquifer and an underlying aquifer of more permeable limestone. Results from other islands of Enewetak, Bikini and Kwajelein Atolls are comparable, and suggest that vertical transport between layered aquifers is an important feature of atoll ground-water hydrology at least throughout the northern Marshall Islands.

    Notes: In an investigation of the hydrogeology of bedrock valley fills in northeastern Wisconsin, it was determined that the yield and spatial distribution of glacial aquifers are controlled by bedrock topography and glacial geology. Lithologic control for identification and classification of aquifer units was obtained from several hundred drillers' logs calibrated by auger borings and interviews. Transmissivities of drift aquifers calculated from specific capacity tests using Jacob's equation agree well with estimates made from lithologic logs. Seismic refraction and gravity surveys were coupled with well log data to derive a bedrock elevation map. Vertical variability maps calculated from the lithologic logs show that bedrock topography strongly influences the distribution and character of glacial units, and clearly delineate the two glacial aquifer types present, valley and morainal units. Morainal units parallel the Late Wisconsin end moraine trends, while valley units are perpendicular to the moraines. The morainal units are small ice-contact features such as kames, fans, and deltas. The valley units are stream deposits and may have been deposited subglacially. Valley aquifers are the most productive units. Using lithologic and geophysical data, and statistical analysis, a predictive depositional model can be proposed. This conceptual model allows knowledge of bedrock topography to be coupled with glacial geology to predict the spatial distribution of glacial aquifers.

    Notes: The Tucson, Arizona, metropolitan area has 450,000 inhabitants and is expected to have nearly 800,000 inhabitants by the year 2000. Tucson is totally dependent on ground water drawn from two basin aquifer systems for its water supplies, as are agricultural, mineral and industrial operations in the area.Municipal, agricultural, mineral and industrial ground-water withdrawals in the two basins amount to some 376,000 acre-feet per year (AFY). Dependable ground-water supplies in the two basins amounts to about 80,000 AFY. Thus, the two aquifer systems are overdrafted by approximately 296,000 AFY, 80 percent of which is by irrigation agriculture.In Arizona, ground water belongs to the owner of the land overlying the aquifer. To ensure adequate ground-water supplies, the City of Tucson has been purchasing and retiring farmlands in one of the basins. However, litigation that reached the Arizona Supreme Court led the Court to rule that the City could pump only 2.4 AFY per acre of farmland retired. The City has retired about 12,000 acres in the basin and in 1978 withdrew some 20,000 AFY of ground water for municipal use.Retiring these farmlands to secure water rights impacts on area economy and creates weed problems for farmers who own land near the retired lands. The City of Tucson budgets about $50,000 annually for weed control.A possible alternative to retiring farmlands and to cultivating crops that require heavy irrigation is cultivating arid-adapted vegetation that has economic potential. Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is a shrub native to the Sonoran Desert that appears to be an economically viable arid-land crop. It needs about 1.5 AFY per acre compared with traditional crops grown in the Southwest that have average needs of 4 AFY or more.The economic value of jojoba is based on the oil extracted from its seeds. It is a unique, unsaturated oil composed of nonglyceride esters consisting almost entirely of straight-chain acids and alcohols. Such oils are difficult to synthesize in commercial quantities, and the only known natural source is the sperm whale, an endangered species.If farmers in the basin cultivated jojoba, water use could be reduced by about 2.5 AFY per acre, from 4 AFY per acre for traditional crops to 1.5 AFY for jojoba. Even if the City of Tucson had to subsidize farmers at a rate of $40 per acre for the 10 years it takes jojoba to produce economically feasible yields, the City would save more than 50 percent of the cost to purchase and retire farmlands and still be able to draw water from the basin for municipal uses.This dual use of water in the basin would permit agriculture to continue its contribution to area economy while the City could continue meeting its water needs by piping water out of the basin into the metropolitan area. However, implementing this plan would require changing Arizona ground-water laws.

    Notes: Few studies have been performed on the occurrence of enterovirus contamination of ground water. In this study, 99 ground-water samples were examined for the presence of enteroviruses, total bacteria, fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococci by standard methods. Enteroviruses were isolated from 20% of the samples. Viruses were isolated from 12 samples which contained no detectable fecal organisms per 100 ml. No statistical correlation between presence of virus and bacteriological indicators could be determined. The widespread failure of current bacteriological standards to indicate the presence of potentially pathogenic enteroviruses in ground water is an area of concern that requires more study.

    Notes: Illinois aquifers furnish approximately 233 mgd (10.2 m3/s) of water to 677 public-water supplies outside the six-county area of northeastern Illinois. Ground water is usually obtained from sand-and-gravel deposits in the glacial drift or from limestone or sandstone formations in the underlying bedrock. The most favorable ground-water conditions are found in the northern third and the southern tip of the State, while, elsewhere, major aquifers are sand-and-gravel deposits of the Mississippi, Illinois, buried Mahomet, Wabash, Ohio, Kaskaskia, and Embarrass valleys.A brief review was made of data and information in the State Water Survey files for each public ground-water supply, and an assessment was given as adequate, marginal, or deficient, in terms of present demands. Twenty-four supplies were studied in greater detail, including calculations of aquifer sustained yields. The study indicated that 39 supplies were marginal and four were judged deficient in meeting current demands. The majority of the marginal and deficient supplies are located in the central third of the State; but so are most of the supplies (outside of north-eastern Illinois).The study represents the first of a three-part plan to: (1) define problem areas and determine priorities for studies in greater detail, (2) conduct regional studies, including test drilling, in problem areas to determine how great the water resource is, and (3) determine the water resource alternatives available to public ground-water supplies that are found to be inadequate.

    Notes: An industrial waste liquid containing organonitrile compounds and nitrate ion has been injected into the lower limestone of the Floridan aquifer near Pensacola, Florida since June 1975. Chemical analyses of water from monitor wells and backflow from the injection well indicate that organic carbon compounds are converted to CO2 and nitrate is converted to N2. These transformations are caused by bacteria immediately after injection, and are virtually completed within 100 m of the injection well. The zone near the injection well behaves like an anaerobic filter with nitrate respiring bacteria dominating the microbial flora in this zone.Sodium thiocyanate contained in the waste is unaltered during passage through the injection zone and is used to detect the degree of mixing of injected waste liquid with native water at a monitor well 312 m (712 ft) from the injection well. The dispersivity of the injection zone was calculated to be 10 m (33 ft). Analyses of samples from the monitor well indicate 80 percent reduction in chemical oxygen demand and virtually complete loss of organonitriles and nitrate from the waste liquid during passage from the injection well to the monitor well. Bacterial densities were much lower at the monitor well than in backflow from the injection well.

    Notes: Abstract. This investigation was to determine whether data on irrigation-well registration forms as reported by well drillers can be used in hydrologic studies. Transmissivity maps were prepared for Hamilton County, Nebraska using only specific capacity values computed from yield and drawdown data, as reported on irrigation well-registration forms. On one map each control point was the mean of the transmissivity values calculated for all wells in a section. On a second map each control point was the mean of the means for four contiguous sections sharing a common corner. The second map was similar to that of a previously prepared map based on control point values computed from specific capacities of selected wells, test hole logs, and geologic interpretations. These results suggest that reported registration data for a given area have a normal population distribution. In situations where individual data are unverified the data base can be treated as samples of a population where the mean of the means of several samples for adjacent areas is representative of actual field conditions.

    Notes: Chemical and isotopic analyses were made of water from wells in and downgradient from a landfill to determine chemical and isotopic effects of generation and migration of leachate on ground water. The distribution and wide concentration range of oxygen and methane permit the delineation of an anaerobic zone, a regional oxygenated zone and an intermediate zone. The ratio of reduced nitrogen to nitrate indicates location of reducing fronts as the leachate migrates. The pH of the native ground water is low (≥5.0) primarily because of the low pH of rainfall and the lack of calcareous or other soluble minerals in the aquifer material. The pH is higher (∼6.6) in the leachate because of generation of carbon dioxide, ammonia, and methane. The native ground water has a low TDS (80 mg/l) while the leachate has an average TDS of 2800 mg/l and is primarily a NaHCO3 type water. Sulfate concentrations are extremely low and H2S was not detected.We suggest that a major source of cations may be their exchange from the clays by the ammonium generated in the leachate. High concentrations of Fe and Mn are attributed to a source in the refuse but more important to reduction of oxide cements and coatings resulting from degradation of organic matter. The main source of bicarbonate is from organic degradation with minimal CO2 from the soil zone. At one landfill site 52% of the total alkalinity is attributed to organic compounds, mainly organic acid anions. The δ13C of bicarbonate in the leachate is exceedingly heavy (+18.400/00) which results from fractionation during the formation of methane. The 10 per mil deuterium enrichment of water may be due to decomposition of deuterium-enriched compounds and bacterial processes that preferentially consume the lighter hydrogen isotope.

    Notes: Rapid fissure flow has been recognised as an important factor in understanding the hydraulic behaviour of the Lincolnshire Limestone aquifer of eastern England. A study of the hydrogeology of a Lincolnshire Limestone spring-fed catchment enables three zones of discharge to be defined, based on their relative elevation along the valley floor. Comparison of the discharge characteristics of each zone reveals the existence of rapid ground-water flow associated with a discrete fissure system. Comparison of spring discharges and ground-water storage during a period of “high,”“low” and “typical” recharge enables a conceptual flow model of the aquifer to be constructed. A two-layered model is proposed, in which the secondary zone (upper unit) is characterised by higher transmissivity and lower storativity than the primary zone (lower unit). In addition, there is evidence of a rapid increase in transmissivity with water-table elevation in the secondary zone. The areal distribution of the secondary zone is associated with a net work dry valleys. The spatial distribution of the two zones is explained by geological structure, lithological variations and the post-glacial history of the area. A two-layered model is developed with these concepts in mind in order to simulate the spring discharges. Once proven, the model can be integreated with the regional hydrogeology and incorporated into existing digital models of the aquifer.

    Notes: Abstract. An evaluation was made of the usefulness of the gamma-ray logger in delineating glacial-drift and bedrock stratigraphy in southwestern Ohio. The logger was useful in delineating gross stratigraphic units in a glacial outwash aquifer. The gamma log also provided a clearer indication of the clay content of sand and gravel units than did the driller's log.On the uplands, away from the valleys filled with glacial outwash, the logger could not be used to locate the thin, poorly-sorted, interstadial sand and gravel deposits between thicker till sheets. It could, however, be used to distinguish formational contacts in the upper Cincinnatian Series.

    Notes: Injection of waste liquids into Florida's subsurface is physically feasible in many places but should be accompanied by monitoring of the waste-receiving aquifer system in addition to the injection facility. Monitoring of the interaction of factors including hydrogeologic conditions, well construction, waste volumes and characteristics, and potable-water sources is desirable to assure that fresh-water resources are not being adversely affected. An effective aquifer-system monitoring program includes on-site wells located close to an injection well and open to the next-higher permeable stratum, satellite wells located hundreds to several thousands of feet from an injection well and open to the receiving aquifer, and regional wells located miles from individual injection wells and open to the receiving aquifer. An extensive aquifer-system monitoring program associated with two waste-injection facilities near Pensacola, Florida, has provided data which have aided hydrologists to understand the aquifer system's response to the injection and, accordingly, to evaluate the potential for affecting the area's fresh-water resources.

    Notes: Overexploitation of ground water in Krishni-Hindon interstream region (Lat. 29°05′N-29°29′N and Long. 77°19′E-77°32′E) in Uttar Pradesh, India, prompted us to carry out aquifer modeling studies. The area lies in Gangetic alluvial plain. The interconnections in the phreatic aquifer and the lower semiconfined aquifer led to the assumption of a single-story aquifer for which an R-C analog model was constructed.The input-output quantities in the model have been simulated using current/voltage generators and current sinks which are appropriately programmed in time-domain with the help of wave-form synthesizers for a realistic representation of the field system.The model study shows that the aquifer can sustain the present output rate of 200 mcm/year without much damage to the ground-water regime. In another scheme, an annual increase of 5% in exploitation rate, shows deleterious effects on the aquifer. Decreased rainfall/ droughts would worsen the situation.The influence of hydraulic connectivity between the aquifer and the Krishni-Hindon river system is quite significant. If the present exploitation rate were to continue for 20 years, the annual inflow to the aquifer from rivers is estimated to increase by about 36.0 mem.More hydrogeological data is required for further validation and refinement of the model.

    Notes: Generally, the 208 planning approach is deficient in a number of ways. Its origin lies in Public Law 92-500, which focuses on protection of surface water and special uses of water for fish, wildlife, and recreation. Little ground water is used for these purposes. Nonpoint sources have not been defined in terms that have hydrogeologic significance. Local and State regulatory agencies have often been unsuccessful in controlling ground-water pollution, yet the 208 approach tends to disregard the reasons for this situation. The reasons for ground-water pollution in an area must be understood before meaningful control measures can be enacted. These include both technical and institutional problems.Planners are placed in the forefront of many 208 programs at the local level and often their backgrounds are inadequate in ground water. There is a great lack of ground-water professionals in regulatory agencies involved, particularly in the Southwest. This deficiency is paramount at high levels and in many regional offices of EPA. There are no provisions in the approach to insure that qualified ground-water geologists or hydrologists will be involved. Academic training in ground water is presently oriented toward ground-water development and not pollution. Lastly, public participation is greatly limited by the general lack of knowledge regarding ground water and its pollution.Successful 208 programs in terms of ground water have been enacted when ground-water professionals have had major roles. Changes are necessary in the academic training of ground-water geologists and hydrologists. The public must be educated concerning the long-term consequences of ground-water pollution. Lastly, ground-water professionals must assume the leadership in ground-water protection.

    Notes: It is herein submitted that the nearly universal phrase “shall not cause pollution of the ground waters and surface waters” written into the State regulations for waste disposal operations not only refutes a sound technical alternative, but is impractical, uneconomical and often unworkable.It is a fact that all ground waters are not created equal, as governed by certain irrefutable physical laws including the water budget equation and Darcy's Law which states that the quantity of ground water available is subject to wide variation from location to location. While an aquifer is a relative term, major, minor and nonaquifers can be identified within a given geographic area with respect to cost-effective ground-water resource development. Likewise, the natural quality of ground water is also a significant variable with certain parameters often exceeding drinking-water standards. The land application of wastes overlying the ground waters of an area should, therefore, also be subject to a certain degree of flexibility for prudent management of both the waste operation and the ground-water resources.Numerous investigations and empirical data can be cited to substantiate the fact that many wastes and their associated leachates can be safely assimilated into the environment with reliance on attenuation and controlled degradation of ground water by utilization of a mixing zone or zone of renovation with a specified distance from a disposal operation. As increased emphasis is placed on the land disposal/management of wastes/residuals and as the cost of these operations continue to mount, it is strongly recommended that controlled ground-water degradation be utilized in those areas where a “true” ground-water resource does not exist. Protection of such a “true” ground-water resource is obviously necessary as our demands for a potable water supply also continue to grow.

    Notes: Ground-water computer models are, certainly, toys which provide intellectual stimulation. They can be useful tools for advancement of the ground-water profession, but I believe that they have been blown out of proportion and that this might cause irreparable damage to our profession.It is important to see where computer models fit into the ground-water problem-solving process. I believe that ground-water computer programs are simply a complicated “turn the crank” tool for making projections. They're one type of tool out of several which requires aquifer and confining bed characteristics to facilitate making projections. A second approach for making projections involves the direct extrapolation or manipulation of data which does not require transmissivity, storage coefficient, leakance, and other interpreted characteristics. Further, I believe that the collection and evaluation of data are of greater importance than the projection methods and/or tools in arriving at answers.Advantages of ground-water computer models include: speedy analyses once a program is working, ability to handle many parameters, and utilization of a large data base. The disadvantages include: use of computer models as end goals, tendency for misapplications, time-consuming setup, a waste of time and money in some cases, and diversion of human talent from useful ground-water work.

    Notes: While it is true that waterborne diseases are still with us, and probably always will be, we cannot classify them as a current threat in the sense that they were 100 years ago. The discovery that chlorine would disinfect water supplies removed these diseases from a “current threat” category to the “historical lesson” category. We are not faced with unknowns which we are unable to attack. We have only to look at what others have done to protect themselves and follow the same or improved practices.If the record of waterborne outbreaks in public water supplies in this country from the end of World War II up to the present is examined, it will be found that all are caused by breakdowns in disinfection procedures or carelessness. The record is replete with statements such as “improper disinfection after repair,”“breakdown or lack of disinfecting equipment,”“back siphonage,” and other similar statements all pointing to failure to follow practices which the history of water treatment has shown to be necessary for protection against waterborne disease. Carelessness allows recurrence of disease outbreaks. If the lessons of history were followed, the conquest of waterborne disease transmission by public water systems could be complete.

    Notes: The increasing use of ground water and its true role as a source of water supplies in the United States have sometimes been interpreted incorrectly. The total use of ground water has indeed increased tremendously during the last 20 years (by almost 80%), but so has the total use of water (over 70%). And ground water is still far from being a primary source of water supplies. In 1975, only 20% of the total amount of water withdrawn in the United States for various uses came from ground-water sources.Statistical analysis of ground-water data for the period 1950-1975 has shown that the ground-water usage is changing only very slowly. Relation of ground-water use to total water use expressed in percent was used as an indicator of changes of ground-water use patterns. This percentage has not changed significantly, and it has fluctuated around 19%. In 1975, only 6 States used more ground water than surface water for their water supplies, and in 23 States ground-water use was less than 10% of total use. Even more unfavorable is the magnitude of change in ratio of ground-water use relative to total water use. From 1955 to 1975 only 13 States show an increase in the ratio. In 28 States the ratio has decreased, and in 7 it has remained the same.

    Notes: An objective view of the need for ground-water quality standards requires that an individual recognize the value that ground water contributes to the water supply needs of our nation. A vast number of people living in rural areas and a large number of communities are dependent upon ground water as their sole source of water for domestic, industrial, commercial, and agricultural needs.This large use and dependency upon ground water dictates that these resources are valuable and must be protected for both present day and future uses. There are many examples where present methods of disposal of wastes generated in America have not been satisfactory from an environmental standpoint, with an exception of projects where disposal sites have been properly designed, operated, and managed for protection of the ground water.One possible solution for ground-water protection is the establishment of ground-water quality standards. The purpose of such standards is to protect the public health and welfare and maintain the quality of ground waters in all usable aquifers for individual, public, industrial, and agricultural water supplies. A legal basis must exist and the prescribed steps must be followed as dictated by the rule making process. The primary aim of such standards is to prevent the degradation of ground waters such as they will not become a public health hazard or harm the users of the ground water.The backbone of such a standard rests on the completion of a hydrogeological study which is necessary to determine background water quality information, set up the monitoring program and outline sampling to determine when water quality changes are taking place and what is a significant change.

    Notes: Half the population depends on ground water for domestic uses. Use is increasing 25 percent per decade. Ground water is generally used with little or no treatment.Some persons would transfer the discharge of our waste products from contaminated surface streams to the land and thus relatively clean ground waters.No standards exist that protect ground-water quality. Research necessary to give assurance that natural interaction of waste water and soils will remove, to acceptable levels, potentially harmful contaminants, organic and inorganic, that permeate today's waste streams and today's health concerns, has not been done.Success reports on land treatment of waste water have a not evaluated deterioration of ground water from organic contamination. Most waste waters contain synthetic organics in varying concentrations. EPA recommends their reduction in drinking water to the lowest possible level.Most instances of ground-water contamination have been discovered after drinking water is contaminated. Unless the public is willing to treat ground water as it does water from surface streams, greater control of land disposal practices must be exercised. Current practice does not indicate the necessary controls are contemplated or recognized. It follows that the widespread use of the land treatment alternative is, in reality, an accident waiting to happen.

Separate regulatory activities mandated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Clean Water Act must be carefully coordinated if they are to be effective.The current implementation efforts within the agency are being framed in view of our major principles which will be the focus of public comment in the months ahead. These principles are:First, the administration of the related programs will be a cooperative effort involving Federal, State and local governments, all of which must participate in formulating the program if it is to be effective.Second, the focus of the programs will be on the prevention of contamination rather than on its treatment at the point of withdrawal.Third, the applicable standards will be based primarily on technology rather than ambient ground-water quality considerations since the effects of discharges upon ambient quality are complex, difficult to predict, and of long duration.Fourth, there is a need to balance environmental protection, energy development and continued economic prosperity objectives so that the resulting programs fully protect public health while being realistically implementable.All of us—government, industry and citizens, through acts of commission or omission—have contributed to the potential problem. We must work together if we are to get on with the important task of protecting the quality of the Nation's ground-water resources.

    Notes: An exact expression is derived for the optimal spacing between interfering wells in a rectangular well field in an ideal confined aquifer. A simple, practical method for determining the optimal spacing is presented. The optimal spacing is shown to be substantially different from the spacing determined by use of the Theis formulation. The economic savings resulting from use of the revised approach are evaluated and found to be considerable, especially when the number of wells is large and the transmissivity of the aquifer low.

    Notes: Hydraulic conductivity studies of a consolidated pozzolanic material indicate that heat-shrinkable tubing can be utilized to encase cylinders for use in a permeameter. The materials required for encasement of a sample include: heat-shrinkable tubing, hose clamps, polyvinyl chloride discs, glass tubing, and an electric oven. The procedure requires that the assembled PVC discs, filters, shrinkable tubing, and sample be placed on a support stand in an electric oven for three to four minutes at a temperature between 450–500° F. Upon removal from the oven, hose clamps are placed around each PVC disc. The method has several advantages. It saves time and expenses over conventional methods such as pneumatic pressurized core holders or triaxial testing units and preserves the original interstitial bore spaces of the sample.
