    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die relativen Stabilitäten von Cycloalkanen (n=3 bis 8) wurden mittels semiempirischer (CNDO) undab initio MO SCF Berechnungen untersucht. Es wurde festgestellt, daß die Kompensation der steigenden Kernabstoßung durch Gewinn an elektronischer Energie bein=6 zu einem Maximum an Stabilität führt und daß das übliche qualitative Modell von Hybridisierungszuständen nicht zur Erklärung ausreichend ist. Die angewendeten Methoden, deren Grenzen und der Einfluß der gewählten Basissätze werden diskutiert.
    Notes: Abstract The relative stability of the cycloalkanesn=3 to 8 is investigated by means of semiempirical (CNDO) andab initio MO SCF calculations. It is found that the compensation of increasing nuclear repulsion by the gain of electronic energy reaches a maximum atn=6, leading thus to a maximum of stability forn=6, and that the usual qualitative models of hybridisation state, optimal bond angle and optimal hydrogen positions do not present sufficient explanations. The methods used, their limitations and basis set effects are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The major objective of this paper is to propose a new decomposition-aggregation framework for stability analysis of Lotka-Volterra equations employing the concept of vector Liapunov functions. Both the disjoint and the overlapping decompositions are introduced to increase flexibility in constructing Liapunov functions for the overall system. Our second objective is to consider the Lotka-Volterra equations under structural perturbations, and derive conditions under which a positive equilibrium is connectively stable. Both objectives of this paper are directed towards a better understanding of the intricate interplay between stability and complexity in the context of robustness of model ecosystems represented by Lotka-Volterra equations. Only stability of equilibria in models with constant parameters is considered here. Nonequilibrium analysis of models with nonlinear time-varying parameters is the subject of a companion paper.

    Notes: Abstract A model for the sterile insect release method of pest control in which the target species is under predatory or parasitic regulation is analyzed. The equations are nondimensionalized and the rescaled parameters are interpreted. There are four types of equilibria, whose existence and stability depend on which of ten regions of parameter space contain the rescaled parameters, and in turn give minimal release rates to achieve eradication of the pest. In at least one region, Hopf bifurcation theory shows the existence of limit cycles, but they are found to be unstable. In addition, the optimal release rate to minimize a total cost functional for pest control by the sterile release method is studied. Both approaches show that when predation accounts for a large fraction of the natural deaths, the necessary release rate and total cost are higher than for weak predation. If the predators are removed without being replaced by any other source of mortality, the cost rises in all cases but rises much more dramatically for cases with strong predation. A definite danger of the sterile release method when some predatory control exists is that the predators are frequently driven extinct before the prey, so that the target species could explode to much higher levels and be more difficult to eradicate again after the sterile release is terminated.

    Notes: Abstract A discrete time genetics model is developed for populations that are undergoing selection due to infectious disease. It is assumed that the generation time of the host and infectious agent are non-synchronous and that only the host population is evolving. Two classes of epidemic processes are considered. The first class is for infectious agents that confer immunity following infection, while the second class is for those that do not confer immunity. The necessary and sufficient conditions are found in order for the disease to persist in a stable polymorphic host population. These conditions are shown to depend on the density of susceptibles, the selection coefficients, and the severity and class of the disease process.

    Notes: Abstract A general predator-prey model is considered in which the predator population is assumed to have an age structure which significantly affects its fecundity. The model equations are derived from the general McKendrick equations for age structured populations. The existence, stability and destabilization of equilibria are studied as they depend on the prey's natural carrying capacity and the maturation periodm of the predator. The main result of the paper is that for a broad class of maturation functions positive equilibria are either unstable for smallm or are destabilized asm decreases to zero. This is in contrast to the usual rule of thumb that increasing (not decreasing) delays in growth rate responses cause instabilities.

First we study the stability of nonconstant stationary solutions of this equation under Neumann boundary conditions. It is shown that any nonconstant stationary solution (if it exists) is unstable if a xx⩽0 for all xε[0, 1], and conversely ifa xx〉0 for some xε[0, 1], there exists a stable nonconstant stationary solution. Next we study the stability of stationary solutions under Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider two types of stationary solutions, i.e., a solution u 0(x) which satisfies u 0 x≠0 for all xε[0, 1] (type I) and a solution u 0(x) which satisfies u 0x = 0 at two or more points in [0, 1] (type II). It is shown that any stationary solution of type I [type II] is stable [unstable] if a xx ⩾0 [a xx ⩽0] for all xε[0, 1]. Conversely, there exists an unstable [a stable] stationary solution of type I [type II] if a xx 〈0 [a xx 〉0] for some xε[0, 1].

    Notes: Abstract The Volterra-Lotka predator-prey equations are modified so that the predator's ability to utilize the prey varies in proportion to the average number of encounters between the two species in the past. The behavior of this adaptive system is then described in terms of three parameters — the carrying capacity of the prey, the relative death rate of the predator, and the predator's memoryspan. The most stable situation is shown to occur when the carrying capacity of the prey is large, the predator's death rate is close to zero, and the predator is able to adapt quickly to changing levels of prey density.

    Notes: Abstract Human stretch reflexes (SRs) are often too weak and ineffectual to provide adequate postural regulation or rhythmic movement boosting (e.g. in ankle pushoff at the end of stance phase in fast running). Recent improvements in methods of artificially enhancing skeletomotor responses, especially in therapeutic regimens, should not be widely employed until the clonus-resisting stability properties of SRs are better understood. We formulate an idealized linear servo model of a segmentally-mediated SR system which includes the often ignored electromechanical coupling delay. For typical closed-loop (delay/gain) ratios, the model is shown to be unstable for all values of loop gain when operating as a position servo, but maximally stable when operating as a velocity servo. We claim that the velocity servo or one of its nonlinear relatives is a better model for some well studied SRs than, e.g., Houk's stiff muscle hypothesis. We also present evidence that even feeble and quickly saturating monosynaptic postural servos are always unstable if operated as pure position regulators.

    Notes: Abstract Linear perturbation theory is used to examine the stability of steady-state distributions of marine phytoplankton in the presence of a mean current with shear. Solutions are obtained for the general initial-value problem and it is found that all distributions are asymptotically stable so long as the rate of shear is greater than the local production.     Notes: Summary The time derivatives of prey and predator populations are assumed to satisfy a set of inequalities, instead of a precise differential equation, reflecting an uncertain environmental and/or lack of knowledge by the modeler. A system of differential equations is found whose solution gives the boundary of a persistent set, which is positive flow invariant for any system satisfying the inequalities. Conditions are given for the persistent set to be bounded away from both axes, which show that resonance effects cannot drive either predator or prey to extinction if that does not happen for an autonomous system satisfying the inequalities. In general predator-prey systems are more persistent when there is strong asymptotic stability, when there is correlation between prey and predator dynamics, when the effect of perturbations is density dependent, and are more persistent under perturbations of the prey than of the predator.

    Notes: Summary The most significant and important interactions in 2, and 3-year sorghum zonal trials were location x year, cultivar x location and cultivar x location x year. Cultivar x year interaction was significant in one out of four ecologic zones used in the trials. The variance components were relatively small with the second order interaction variance component larger than the first order types involving cultivars. Environmental variance was the largest in all four zones. Computations on theoretical standard error of cultivar means suggest that six replications, eight locations and four years is an ideal testing procedure in the Northern Guinea Savanna, while in the Sudan Savanna, the combination is better with four replications, eight locations and three years. The true value or performance of a variety is most effectively obtained by increasing the number of years, while increasing number of replications is the least effective.

    Notes: Summary There were significant differences between hybrids for number of bunches (NB), mean bunch weight (MBW) and fresh fruit bunch yield (FFB). For the hybrid population as a whole, significant hybrid X year (environment) effects were also observed for the two yield components and for yield per se. The linear component of the hybrid X year effect was also significant. There were highly significant and positive correlations between FFB, NB and MBW hybrid means and the regression co-efficients of the hybrid means on the environmental index. There were no significant associations between these means and mean square deviations from regression (s2d) for these traits.

    Notes: Abstract The essence of the contradiction between traditional ecological complexity-stability hypothesis and recent theoretical results is clarified. The distinction between resilience and resistance is stressed. The possibilities of field verification of May's model are discussed. No satisfactory method for estimation of connectance and mean interaction strength in plant communities has been found. Relation between these parameters and stability in real communities remains an open question. The relation between connectance and stability (resilience) in purely competitive model communities is more complicated than May's rule predicts. The certain value of connectance having been achieved, stability increases with increasing connectance. We assessed the positive relation between species diversity and resistance, and negative relation between species diversity and resilience in plant communities during old-field succession in xeric habitat. But there is no causal relationship between species diversity and both kinds of stability. Resistance and resilience of the plant communities studied were determined primarily by life history strategies of constituent species. The results are interpreted in terms of Grimes' life history strategies and imply the validity of Gleasonian, population-centered explanation of community phenomena.

    Notes: Summary Vegetation dynamics after fire was studied in six communities in Bas-Languedoc (Southern France). 47 plots were observed by means of a permanent transect for ten years. In the first part, we describe floristic richness, species fugacity and the way by which, the ‘terminal’ community (as defined by the last observation) appears. The dynamics of all these communities follows a simple and general model: floristic richness reaches its maximum during the first two years after a fire, then decreases and becomes stable. Fugacity follows a similar model, whereas the mergence of the ‘terminal’ community is rapid: one year after fire 70% of the plots have already acquired 75% of the species of the ‘terminal’ community. There is no succession (in the general sense of the word), but a progressive reappearance of the species belonging to the original community. In the second part, we study floristic similarities between our plots and corresponding associations as described in literature. It appears that after a fire the floristic diversity of the landscape remains high; while the communities rapidly reach a relative maturity. In the study area fire seems to be a rather superficial phenomenon; it does not lead to an important modification of the community dynamics, because probably the most frequent species in Bas-Languedoc developed adaptations to withstand fire.

    Notes: Abstract Multivariate models based independently on the floristic and environmental attributes of sample quadrats from an escarpment woodland, were constructed. They were used to interpret the ecology of plant species distribution and to investigate the size structure of tree populations. Site instability, soil water status, and past management and grazing pressure were found to exert major influences on the composition and structure of the woodland. It is suggested that early mortality associated with site instability, plays an important role in maintaining the floristic diversity of vascular plants in the woodland ground flora, by increasing the frequency of tree replacement. This may have the effect of preventing canopy closure and any associated, detrimental effects of low light intensities. The relevance of the work of the conservation management of escarpment woods in Northern Ireland is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Root anchorage is discussed with a view to determining the optimum use of root material for enhanced stability. Field observations were made on Sitka spruce root systems while lateral forces were applied to the stem with a winch to pull the tree over. Measurements included the applied force, angles of inclination, soil and root movement, timing of the sound of root breakage using buried microphones, weight and shape of the root-soil plate and damage to the roots. Components of anchorage include the dimensions and mass of the root-soil plate levered from the ground by the displaced stem, and tensile strength of roots and soil beneath the plate; root and soil tensile strength and root/soil resistance on the windward perimeter; and on the lee side the stiffness of the hinge at the fulcrum. Strength properties of roots and soil are reviewed. Models devised for landslip are extended to consider behaviour under tension, of roots singly and in groups, and the concept is developed of a ‘critical rooting density’ at which root/soil resistance exceeds soil strength, giving rise to the characteric root-soil plate on uprooted trees. The lee side part of the root-soil plate acts as a cantilevered beam and determines the distance of the fulcrum from the tree. Physical laws defining the reduced stiffness of beams as a result of subdivision, indicate the importance of the number/size distribution of roots and weakening effects of branching. On the windward side upward movement of the root-soil plate causes sequential breakage of soil and roots. Under an increasing applied load, failure occurs in parts of the soil-root system before the maximum force for uprooting is achieved. A preliminary approach is made to modelling where the changing contributions of the components of anchorage are allowed for throughout the uprooting process.

    Notes: Synopsis The structure of assemblages of fish on small patch reefs was experimentally investigated by totally denuding three experimental reefs, and following their ‘recovery’ and concomitant changes in three control reefs by subsequent visual censusing. Experimental treatment had no significant effect on the number of fish or species subsequently present, nor on the faunal composition of the assemblages. However, all assemblages, both control and experimental, exhibited significant change in structure through the 28 month period they were followed. Such assemblages thus appear to have low constancy, or stability, but high resilience. The results conform to those of previous small-scale, or artificial reef studies, and are compatible with a view emphasising the role of variability in recruitment in determining the structure of reef fish assemblages.

    Notes: Synopsis In January 1977, a record breaking cold spell caused fish kills at Big Pine Key, Florida. Census data collected before and after the cold spell from a series of model reefs constructed in 1975 showed a significant drop in mean number of reef fish species and individuals. Following this disturbance, high recruitment of juveniles occurred, presumably due to reduced competition, predation, or a combination of these. Model and natural patch reef communities examined the summer following the cold spell (1977) were significantly different from those examined the summer before (1976) and the second summer following the cold spell (1978). During the summer of 1977, a significantly smaller mean fish size and a significantly greater mean number of species and individuals were observed. Increased species richness following the cold spell is consistent with the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. Contrary to some theoretical predictions, results suggest reef fish communities are highly resilient to some regional disturbance.

The influence of the relaxation time of the perturbations is neglected. It is shown that plane Couette flow will become unstable independently of Reynolds number ifd(κN)/dκ 〉 4ηη d holds. Here areκ the rate of shear velocity,N the first normal stress coefficient,η the viscosity andη d the differential viscosity (η d =dτ/dκ). The same criterion holds also for plane Poiseuille flow with the data taken at the wall. In this case the eigenfunctions are oscillating in a very thin layer near the wall and decaying very rapidly in the inner region of the flow field.

    Notes: Abstract The stability analysis for sheet stretching recently presented by Minoshima and White for Newtonian fluids is repeated for non-Newtonian fluids. For that purpose a constitutive law for nearly extensional flow is derived which, apart from a restriction to short memory of the fluid, is generally valid. Using this constitutive law the result found by Minoshima and White is generalized. Application of the general result to a Maxwell-type fluid shows that the elasticity of the fluid has a stabilizing influence.

    Notes: A comprehensive study is presented regarding the numerical stability of the simple and common forward Euler explicit integration technique combined with some common finite difference spatial discretizations applied to the advection-diffusion equation. One-dimensional results are obtained using both the matrix method (for several boundary conditions) and the classical von Neumann method of stability analysis and arguments presented showing that the latter is generally to be preferred, regardless of the type of boundary conditions. The less-well-known Godunov-Ryabenkii theory is also applied for a particular (Robin) boundary condition. After verifying portions of the one-dimensional theory with some numerical results, the stabilities of the two- and three-dimensional equations are addressed using the von Neumann method and results presented in the form of a new stability theorem. Extension of a useful scheme from one dimension, where the pure advection limit is known variously as Leith's method or a Lax-Wendroff method, to many dimensions via finite elements is also addressed and some stability results presented.

    Notes: The perturbation equations which characterize the stability of flow over a rotating infinite disk are derived via strict order of magnitude analysis. These equations contain viscous terms not considered by Stuart,1 curvature and Coriolis terms not considered by Brown,2 and axial velocity terms not considered by Kobayashi et al.3 The strategy for reducing the problem to an algebraic system is Galerkin's method with B-spline discretization. In comparison with the Poiseuille flow solutions of Orszag,4 the method is shown to perform well without placing undue demands on computing capability. Critical values of Reynolds number, wave length, vortex orientation and number of spiral vortices calculated by the present method compare favourably with experimental data of Kobayashi et al.

    Description: En el presente trabajo se estudiaron los cambios de los componentes volátiles de un concentrado de sabor limón para preparar bebidas de limón durante 6 meses de conservación a 40 ºC. Se identificaron 44 compuestos aislados mediante microextracción en fase sólida del espacio de cabeza en combinación con la cromatografía de gases- espectrometría de masas. El limoneno, γ-terpineno, acetato de citronelilo, acetato de nerilo y acetato de geranilo, disminuyeron su contenido significativamente, mientras que el 1,4-cineol, 1,8-cineol, p-cimeno, p-cimeneno, p-menta-1,3- dien-8-ol, α-terpineol, trans-α-bergamoteno, ar-curcumeno, (E,E)-α-farneseno y β-bisaboleno la incrementaron. El neral y geranial parecen disminuir su contenido, pero estos cambios no explican todo el aumento en las concentraciones de p-cimeno y p-cimeneno. El incremento de p-cimeno puede ser explicado por la degradación del γ-terpineno, que está presente en mayor proporción que el citral.
    Description: In this paper, the changes of major volatile compounds of a lemon concentrate for preparing lemon-flavored drink were studied. A total of 44 volatile compounds from a lemon beverage were isolated by means of headspace-solid phase microextraction and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, many of them significantly changed by the storage for 6 months at 40ºC. Limonene, γ-terpinene, citronellyl acetate, neryl acetate and geranyl acetate were significantly decreased by storage; while 1,4-cineole, 1,8-cineole, p-cymene, p-cymenene, p-mentha-1,3-dien-8-ol, α-terpineol, trans-α- bergamotene, ar-curcumene, (E,E)-α-farnesene and β- bisabolene were increased. Neral and geranial seem to decrease their concentrations, but their changes do not explain all the increment of p-cymene and p-cymenene. The increase of p- cymene could also be explained by the degradation of γ- terpinene, which is present in greater amount than citral.

    Description: The temporal response of the length of a partially mixed estuary to changes in freshwater discharge Qf and tidal amplitude UT is studied using a 108-day time series collected along the length of the Hudson River estuary in the spring and summer of 2004 and a long-term (13.4 yr) record of Qf, UT, and near-surface salinity. When Qf was moderately high, the tidally averaged length of the estuary L5, here defined as the distance from the mouth to the up-estuary location where the vertically averaged salinity is 5 psu, fluctuated by more than 47 km over the spring–neap cycle, ranging from 28 to 〉75 km. During low flow periods, L5 varied very little over the spring–neap cycle and approached a steady length. The response is quantified and compared to predictions of a linearized model derived from the global estuarine salt balance. The model is forced by fluctuations in Qf and UT relative to average discharge Qo and tidal amplitude UTo and predicts the linear response time scale τ and the steady-state length Lo for average forcing. Two vertical mixing schemes are considered, in which 1) mixing is proportional to UT and 2) dependence of mixing on stratification is also parameterized. Based on least squares fits between L5 and estuary length predicted by the model, estimated τ varied by an order of magnitude from a period of high average discharge (Qo = 750 m3 s−1, τ = 4.2 days) to a period of low discharge (Qo = 170 m3 s−1, τ = 40.4 days). Over the range of observed discharge, Lo Qo−0.30±0.03, consistent with the theoretical scaling for an estuary whose landward salt flux is driven by vertical estuarine exchange circulation. Estimated τ was proportional to the discharge advection time scale (LoA/Qo, where A is the cross-sectional area of the estuary). However, τ was 3–4 times larger than the theoretical prediction. The model with stratification-dependent mixing predicted variations in L5 with higher skill than the model with mixing proportional to UT. This model provides insight into the time-dependent response of a partially stratified estuary to changes in forcing and explains the strong dependence of the amplitude of the spring–neap response on freshwater discharge. However, the utility of the linear model is limited because it assumes a uniform channel, and because the underlying dynamics are nonlinear, and the forcing Qf and UT can undergo large amplitude variations. River discharge, in particular, can vary by over an order of magnitude over time scales comparable to or shorter than the response time scale of the estuary.

    Description: Five ice-tethered profilers (ITPs), deployed between 2004 and 2006, have provided detailed potential temperature θ and salinity S profiles from 21 anticyclonic eddy encounters in the central Canada Basin of the Arctic Ocean. The 12–35-m-thick eddies have center depths between 42 and 69 m in the Arctic halocline, and are shallower and less dense than the majority of eddies observed previously in the central Canada Basin. They are characterized by anomalously cold θ and low stratification, and have horizontal scales on the order of, or less than, the Rossby radius of deformation (about 10 km). Maximum azimuthal speeds estimated from dynamic heights (assuming cyclogeostrophic balance) are between 9 and 26 cm s−1, an order of magnitude larger than typical ambient flow speeds in the central basin. Eddy θ–S and potential vorticity properties, as well as horizontal and vertical scales, are consistent with their formation by instability of a surface front at about 80°N that appears in historical CTD and expendable CTD (XCTD) measurements. This would suggest eddy lifetimes longer than 6 months. While the baroclinic instability of boundary currents cannot be ruled out as a generation mechanism, it is less likely since deeper eddies that would originate from the deeper-reaching boundary flows are not observed in the survey region.

    Description: In the 1D linearized shallow water equations, the Courant number should be 〈 0.5 for stability in the original Leapfrog (LF) scheme. Here, we propose using the time-averaged heights in the pressure gradient force in the momentum equations. The stability analysis shows that the new scheme is neutral when Courant number 〈1. The scheme is 2nd order accurate in both time and space. It does not require iterations and can be easily applied in 2D or 3D wave equations. The numerical simulations for 2-D linearized shallow water equations are consistent with those obtained from a 2-time-step semi-implicit scheme.

    Description: The influences of precipitation on water mass transformation and the strength of the meridional overturning circulation in marginal seas are studied using theoretical and idealized numerical models. Nondimensional equations are developed for the temperature and salinity anomalies of deep convective water masses, making explicit their dependence on both geometric parameters such as basin area, sill depth, and latitude, as well as on the strength of atmospheric forcing. In addition to the properties of the convective water, the theory also predicts the magnitude of precipitation required to shut down deep convection and switch the circulation into the haline mode. High-resolution numerical model calculations compare well with the theory for the properties of the convective water mass, the strength of the meridional overturning circulation, and also the shutdown of deep convection. However, the numerical model also shows that, for precipitation levels that exceed this critical threshold, the circulation retains downwelling and northward heat transport, even in the absence of deep convection.
