Notes: Abstract Time-of-flight (TOF) diagnostics have been applied to study the interaction of CO2 laser pulses with multilayers of D2O, CH3OH, CH3F, CCl4, and C6H5CHO condensed on different substrates (Ge, Ag, SiO2). Maxwellian TOF distributions were fitted to the measured distributions. The TOF temperatures and the desorption yields show the same spectral features as do the respective ir absorption spectra. This indicates resonant heating by wavelength-dependent excitation of internal modes of the condensed molecules. Semilog plots of the desorption yield versus reciprocal TOF temperature exhibit Arrhenius behavior, as expected for a thermally activated process.

Notes: Abstract X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to study the surface reaction of Zn3P2 single crystals. The spectra of crystals exposed to H2, O2, CO2, O2+H2O or CO2+H2O during a four week period were compared to the spectra of as-grown or in UHV scraped samples. For samples contaminated with the wet gases O2+H2O and CO2+H2O additional phosphorus core levels together with a shift of the zinc core levels were observed. For crystals exposed to atmosphere during several months no phosphorus could be detected on the gasgrown surface, whereas the stochiometry of Zn3P2 was maintained within the bulk. Crystals with scraped surfaces showed no moisture sensitivity. No surface contamination was also detected for Zn3P2 crystals deposited with up to 1000 L H2O or exposed to atmosphere during 30 min.

Notes: Abstract Experiments on the ablation of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with 300 fs uv excimer laser pulses at 248 nm are reported for the first time. With these ultrashort pulses, ablation can be done at fluences up to five times lower than the threshold fluence for 16 ns ablation of PMMA, and the surface morphology is improved, also for several other materials. A model for ablation is proposed, assuming a non-constant absorption coefficient αeff depending on the degree of incubation of the irradiated material and the intensity of the incoming excimer laser pulse. The agreement between our model and our experimental observations is excellent for 16 ns excimer laser pulses, also predicting perfectly the shape of a pulse transmitted through a thin PMMA sample under high fluence irradiation. Qualitative agreement for 300 fs excimer laser pulses is obtained so far.

Notes: Abstract The IRMPD of Si2F6 by a CO2 TEA laser was applied to isotopically selective CVD of silicon. A white film, probably consisting of polymers of SiF2, was deposited on a metal foil during the irradiation of natural Si2F6 with the laser radiation at 951.19 cm−1 and about 1.5 J cm−2. Upon heating, the film became dark brown, evolving SiF4. The30Si content was found to be as high as about 20%.

Notes: Abstract The deposition of lead film on quartz substrates by photolysing tetraethyl lead vapor with a laser is reported. The dependence of the deposition rate on the pressure of tetraethyl lead, on the light intensity and on the pressure of the buffer gas is measured. Deposition phenomena at low light intensity are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The fluorescence properties of dye molecules (rhodamine 6G and erythrosin) adsorbed on pure glass surfaces and on silver islands films are investigated by cw and picosecond time-resolved methods. On pure glass surfaces we observe concentration quenching below a critical intermolecular distance (reduction of the fluorescence power per molecule as well as shortened and non-exponential fluorescence decay). On silver islands films the shortening in fluorescence lifetime is more drastic and is nearly independent of the intermolecular distance. This behavior suggests an electrodynamic interaction between dye monomers and plasmons in the metal particles, modified by a damping influence of dye dimers.

Notes: Abstract Excimer laser (248 nm, 15 ns) photoablation products from the polymers PMMA and polystyrene are directly observed using picosecond uv laser (290 nm, 1 ps) ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. Species heavier than the monomer masses are detected, which cannot be attributed to simple direct fragments of the polymer chains, but rather show the importance of fast chemistry and/or photochemistry during the ablation process.

Notes: Abstract Model calculations on laser-induced photolytic gas-phase processing have shown that the concentrations of photogenerated species and the reaction rates depend not only on the electronic properties of precursor molecules and on the wavelength and intensity of the laser excitation, but also on the size of the laser focus, the type of the substrate material and, significantly, on the material and geometry of the reaction chamber. In particular, it has been demonstrated that a dependence of the reaction rate,W, on the radius of the laser beam on the substrate surface,w o, according toW∝w 0 −n cannot be employed, in general, in a simple way to separate adsorbed-phase and gas-phase contributions to the reaction rate as claimed in previous investigations. Even in pure photolytic gas-phase processing, the exponentn can vary within the range 0〈n〈=2, depending on the various different parameters and material properties.

Notes: Abstract The photoablation of polyimid was studied by time-resolved photography during the excimer laser pulse at 308 nm. Photographs showing successive instants of the formation of the etched craters demonstrate the fast-moving air-polymer interface. It is demonstrated experimentally that the polymer ablates layer by layer during the evolution of the UV laser pulse.
