Notes: Abstract X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to study the surface reaction of Zn3P2 single crystals. The spectra of crystals exposed to H2, O2, CO2, O2+H2O or CO2+H2O during a four week period were compared to the spectra of as-grown or in UHV scraped samples. For samples contaminated with the wet gases O2+H2O and CO2+H2O additional phosphorus core levels together with a shift of the zinc core levels were observed. For crystals exposed to atmosphere during several months no phosphorus could be detected on the gasgrown surface, whereas the stochiometry of Zn3P2 was maintained within the bulk. Crystals with scraped surfaces showed no moisture sensitivity. No surface contamination was also detected for Zn3P2 crystals deposited with up to 1000 L H2O or exposed to atmosphere during 30 min.

Notes: Abstract Experiments on the ablation of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with 300 fs uv excimer laser pulses at 248 nm are reported for the first time. With these ultrashort pulses, ablation can be done at fluences up to five times lower than the threshold fluence for 16 ns ablation of PMMA, and the surface morphology is improved, also for several other materials. A model for ablation is proposed, assuming a non-constant absorption coefficient αeff depending on the degree of incubation of the irradiated material and the intensity of the incoming excimer laser pulse. The agreement between our model and our experimental observations is excellent for 16 ns excimer laser pulses, also predicting perfectly the shape of a pulse transmitted through a thin PMMA sample under high fluence irradiation. Qualitative agreement for 300 fs excimer laser pulses is obtained so far.

Notes: Abstract Excimer laser (248 nm, 15 ns) photoablation products from the polymers PMMA and polystyrene are directly observed using picosecond uv laser (290 nm, 1 ps) ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. Species heavier than the monomer masses are detected, which cannot be attributed to simple direct fragments of the polymer chains, but rather show the importance of fast chemistry and/or photochemistry during the ablation process.

Notes: Abstract In this article, we will summarize the kinetic models for nitrogen dissociation on Fe {111} and will present new data on the adsorption mechanism for the π-bonded α-N2 state, which was identified as the immediate precursor for dissociation. Our results reveal that adsorption into the α state can occur via the more weakly bonded γ state, but also by direct impact from the gas phase. The sticking coefficient via the γ state precursor depends directly on its concentration, and therefore depends on the temperature of the substrate and the gas pressure. Contrary to our previous estimates, the kinetic parameters for precursor mediated adsorption into the α state in the limit of zero coveragecannot explain the high temperature dissociation probability. The direct channel from the gas phase into the α state needs to be included to explain the experimental results. We also discuss the stabilization of γ-N2 by preadsorbed α-N2, i.e. an attractive interaction between alike molecules but in different bonding configurations.

Notes: Abstract Molecular, or static, secondary ion mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) is applied to the detection of organic molecules in amorphous titanium carbide films. The presence of such organic clusters is thought to stabilize the amorphous phase to higher temperatures (〉1000°C) and greater thicknesses. The high corrosion resistance properties of the TiC deposits are also attributed to the inclusion of such molecular entities. The processes whereby these molecular entities in the films are transformed into secondary ions during SIMS analysis are also investigated. It is shown that the dominant ionization mechanisms in this case are electron and momentum transfer.

Notes: Abstract Chemical etching of single-crystalline (100)Si induced by pulsed laser irradiation at 308, 423, and 583 nm has been investigated as a function of the laser fluence and C12 pressure. Without laser-induced surface melting, etching requires Cl radicals which are produced only at laser wavelengths below 500 nm. With low laser fluences (Φ(308 nm)〈100 mJ/cm2) etching is non-thermal and based on direct interactions between photocarriers and Cl radicals. For fluences which induce surface melting (Φ(308 nm)〉440 mJ/cm2) etching is thermally activated. In the intermediate region both thermal and non-thermal mechanisms contribute to the etch rate.

Notes: Abstract Having studied free silver clusters by quantum chemical calculations we now present a method to take into account the influence of a silver halide surface on adsorbed silver clusters. The model for the surface will be a silver halide cluster as frozen crystal section. The interactions are discussed in detail; a new bromide pseudopotential may be of special interest. Results with this method will be given in subsequent papers.

Notes: Abstract The adsorption of Ag+ and Ag on a (100) AgBr surface is investigated. Interstitial subsurface sites and incomplete surfaces (with ledges and kinks) are also considered. Equilibrium geometries, adsorption energies and ionization potentials have been calculated. Migration of neutral Ag on the surface and crystal growth of AgBr are discussed, and a comparison with other theoretical results is given.
