Notes: Abstract In this paper we consider the problem of establishing the number of solutions to the complementarity problem. For the case when the Jacobian of the mapping has all principal minors negative, and satisfies a condition at infinity, we prove that the problem has either 0, 1, 2 or 3 solutions. We also show that when the Jacobian has all principal minors positive, and satisfies a condition at infinity, the problem has a unique solution.

Notes: Abstract The several published methods for mapping a dual solution estimate to a primal solution estimate in posynomial geometric programming provide no criteria for deciding how much deviation from primal feasibility, or discrepancy between the primal and dual objective function values, should be permitted before the primal solution estimate is accepted by the designer. This paper presents a new and simple dual-to-primal conversion method that uses the cost coefficients to provide a sound economic criterion for determining when to accept a primal solution estimate. The primal solution estimate generated is the exact solution to a modified primal obtained from the given primal by modifying the cost coefficients, with the exponent matrix left unchanged. The method is shown to have desirable properties when coupled with a convergent dual algorithm.

Notes: Abstract We consider the problem of cost allocation among users of a minimum cost spanning tree network. It is formulated as a cooperative game in characteristic function form, referred to as a minimum cost spanning tree (m.c.s.t.) game. We show that the core of a m.c.s.t. game is never empty. In fact, a point in the core can be read directly from any minimum cost spanning tree graph associated with the problem. For m.c.s.t. games with efficient coalition structures we define and construct m.c.s.t. games on the components of the structure. We show that the core and the nucleolus of the original game are the cartesian products of the cores and the nucleoli, respectively, of the induced games on the components of the efficient coalition structure.

Notes: Abstract An algorithm is presented for computing equilibria in a linear monetary economy, that is, an exchange economy in which all individuals have linear utility functions and in which goods are bought and sold only in exchange for money. The algorithm computes the equilibrium prices by solving a finite sequence of linear programming problems.

Notes: Abstract In a recent paper M.C. Cheng proposed new criteria for the simplex algorithm which guarantee that (i) a nonbasic variable of a basic feasible solution will remain nonbasic in an optimal basic solution, (ii) a basic variable of a basic solution will remain basic in an optimal basic solution. This comment gives (i) a slight generalization of the first result and (ii) a counterexample to the second proposition.

Notes: Abstract We survey some recent developments in duality theory with the idea of explaining and unifying certain basic duality results in both nonlinear and integer programming. The idea of replacing dual variables (prices) by price functions, suggested by Everett and developed by Gould, is coupled with an appropriate dual problem with the consequence that many of the results resemble those used in linear programming. The dual problem adopted has a (traditional) economic interpretation and dual feasibility then provides a simple alternative to concepts such as conjugate functions or subdifferentials used in the study of optimality. In addition we attempt to make precise the relationship between primal, dual and saddlepoint results in both the traditional Lagrangean and the more general duality theories and to see the implications of passing from prices to price functions. Finally, and perhaps surprisingly, it appears that all the standard algorithms terminate by constructing primal and dual feasible solutions of equal value, i.e., by satisfying generalised optimality conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A generalization of the concept of a divided difference operator introduced by J. W. Schmidt is derived. The inclusion of solutions by certain Regula-falsi-methods realized by a well known approximation of the Jacobian matrix, which is no divided difference operator in the sense of Schmidt but a realization of this generalization, is proved.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract An algorithm is proposed for computation of the exponential of a matrixX which uses the well known continued fraction expansion of tanhX. ForX essentially-nonnegative the following is proved: In interval arithmetic the algorithm is feasible, numerically convergent and bound conserving; after possibly a few initial steps it gives alternatively lower and upper bounds to the exact result.

Notes: Abstract LetF:X→Y be an order-convex operator, whereX, Y are partially ordered Banach spaces. Two related methods for the solution ofF(x)=0 are discussed, one of which has been studied by Pasquali (see [2]) and the other by Wolfe [12]. Existence-convergence theorems for the methods are given, and these are illustrated with the aid of example. Some remarks are also made on a method due to Traub [7] which has also been discussed by Wolfe [12].

Notes: Abstract Given a basic pseudo-random number generator which returns uniformly distributed samplesU from the interval (0, 1) and a statistical distribution as defined by its distribution functionF(x). Then the inversion methodX←F −1 (U) produces samples fromF(x). A procedure is developed which prepares “guide tables” in order to facilitate this inversion so that sampling becomes efficient for arbitraryF(x). For discrete distributions these tables are small and easy to set up, and the resulting sampling algorithm compares well with known general methods. Continuous distributions require longer set-up times and more space for tables. These are prepared using given probability densitiesf(x). The method can cope with “reasonable”f(x) including most cases which are commonly encountered in statistics. The reported computational experience, on Poisson, Normal, Gamma and Cauchy distributions, indicates that our general routine is almost as fast as the best known sampling algorithms which were specially designed for these distributions.

Notes: Abstract A Cauchy type singular integral equation of the first kind can be numerically solved either directly, through the use of a Gaussian numerical integration rule, or by reduction to an equivalent Fredholm integral equation of the second kind, where the Nyström method is applicable. In this note it is proved that under appropriate but reasonable conditions the expressions of the unknown function of the integral equation, resulting from the natural interpolation formulae of the direct method, as well as of the Nyström method, are identical along the whole integration interval.

Notes: Abstract The use of algebraic eigenvalues to approximate the eigenvalues of Sturm-Liouville operators is known to be satisfactory only when approximations to the fundamental and the first few harmonics are required. In this paper, we show how the asymptotic error associated with related but simpler Sturm-Liouville operators can be used to correct certain classes of algebraic eigenvalues to yield uniformly valid approximations.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die RaumkurveL werde implizit durch das nichtlineare (n, n+1)-SystemH(u)=0 definiert.
Notes: Abstract Let the space curveL be defined implicitly by the (n, n+1) nonlinear systemH(u)=0. A new direct Newton-like method for computing turning points ofL is described that requires per step only the evaluation of one Jacobian and 5 function values ofH. Moreover, a linear system of dimensionn+1 with 4 different right hand sides has to be solved per step. Under suitable conditions the method is shown to converge locally withQ-order two if a certain discretization stepsize is appropriately chosen. Two numerical examples confirm the theoretical results.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an algorithm for the minimization of a nonlinear objective function subject to nonlinear inequality and equality constraints. The proposed method has the two distinguishing properties that, under weak assumptions, it converges to a Kuhn-Tucker point for the problem and under somewhat stronger assumptions, the rate of convergence is quadratic. The method is similar to a recent method proposed by Rosen in that it begins by using a penalty function approach to generate a point in a neighborhood of the optimum and then switches to Robinson's method. The new method has two new features not shared by Rosen's method. First, a correct choice of penalty function parameters is constructed automatically, thus guaranteeing global convergence to a stationary point. Second, the linearly constrained subproblems solved by the Robinson method normally contain linear inequality constraints while for the method presented here, only linear equality constraints are required. That is, in a certain sense, the new method “knows” which of the linear inequality constraints will be active in the subproblems. The subproblems may thus be solved in an especially efficient manner. Preliminary computational results are presented.

Notes: Abstract In this paper it is demonstrated how the probabilistic concept of a stopping time in a random process may be used to generate an iterative method for solving a system of linear equations. Actually all known iterative approximation methods for solving linear equations are generated by various choices of a stopping time e. g. the point and block Jacobi methods, the point and block Gauss-Seidel Methods and overrelaxation methods are covered. The probabilistic approach offers—in a natural way—the possibility of adapting the solution technique to the special structure of the problem. Moreover, posterior bounds for the solution are constructed, which lead to faster convergence of the approximations than with usual prior bounds.

In general, the speed of convergence is accelerated in this way. Starting from a different point of view the same problem has been treated recently in [5].

Notes: Abstract A simple but efficient method to obtain accurate solutions of a system of nonlinear equations with a singular Jacobian at the solution is presented. This is achieved by enlarging the system to a higher dimensional one whose solution in question is isolated. Thus it can be computed e. g. by Newton's method, which is locally at least quadratically convergent and selfcorrecting, so that high accuracy is attainable.

Notes: Abstract In addition to the integers, the real and complex numbers, the real segments (intervals) and complex segments as well as vectors and matrices over all of these comprise the fundamental data types in computation. We extendFORTRAN so that it accepts operands and operators for all of these types as primitives in expressions. We briefly review the spaces corresponding to these data types and the definitions of the arithmetic operations in their computer representable subsets. Then we give a general description of the language extension including the additional basic external functions and intrinsic functions for the new data types. Following this we give the syntax for the extended language in the form of easily traceable syntax diagrams. Comments on the semantics are also included.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract For nonlinear SOR-methods (Newton-SOR-methods) we discuss the problem how to get asymptotic optimal relaxation parameters ω(v). Here the matrix of the linear system at each step of iteration has not to be consistently ordered, we only assume symmetry and definitness. Our parameters are easy to compute and fixed for all steps. As an example nonlinear elliptic differential equations and their numerical solution by the finite element method or classical difference approximation are considered.

In this note, we show thatE (C)=0(n) for algorithms that use a “throw-away” pre-processing step whenf is bounded away from 0 and ∞ on any nondegenerate rectangle ofR 2.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Direkte Methoden zur Lösung von singulären Integralgleichungen vom Cauchy-Typus (S. I. G.) beruhen auf der Gaussschen Regel für numerische Integration, wobei die S. I. G. durch Anwendung der resultierenden Funktionalgleichung an geeignet gewählten Kollokationspunkten auf ein lineares Gleichungssystem reduziert wird.
Notes: Abstract Direct methods for solving Cauchy-type singular integral equations (S.I.E.) are based on Gauss numerical integration rule [1] where the S.I.E. is reduced to a linear system of equations by applying the resulting functional equation at properly selected collocation points. The equivalence of this formulation with the one based on the Lagrange interpolatory approximation of the unknown function was shown in the paper. Indirect methods for the solution of S. I. E. may be obtained after a reduction of it to an equivalent Fredholm integral equation and an application of the same numerical technique to the latter. It was shown in this paper that both methods are equivalent in the sense that they give the same numerical results. Using these results the error estimate and the convergence of the methods was established.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bekanntlich erfordert die Berechung des Produkts zweier komplexer ZahlenX+iY undU+iV genau 3 reellem/d.
Notes: abstract It is well-known that the product of two complex numbersX+iY andU+iV requires exactly 3 realm/d. We study the algebraic complexity of several other operations from the repertoire of complex arithmetic. We show, for instance, that complex inversion requires exactly 4m/d and that general complex division requires at least 5m/d. For the latter problem an upperbound of 6m/d is known, leaving some speculation as to its precise complexity. The proofs illustrate several criteria which may be of more general use in assessing the complexity of concrete sets of rational functions.

Notes: Abstract Sometimes computational errors are easy to understand once all the uses, as an operand, of each computed value are known. Directed graphs provide a notational device for displaying these dependencies. Simple graph arguments show that gradual underflow improves the performance of certain computational procedures but not others. (Some procedures require deeper analysis.) Here we use graph arguments to show that if computer arithmetic is augmented with a “denormal zero”, then errors from gradual underflow are always comparable to the uncertainty due to rounding error, though the comparison involves a factor that can grow exponentially with the number of arithmetic operations. Thus for procedures where existence of a denormal zero is unnecessary and the exponential growth is impossible, gradual underflow diminishes the noise from underflow to a level that can safely be ignored.

Notes: Abstract An automatic quadrature algorithm especially designed for double integration of functions with some form of singular behaviour on the boundary of the integration region is described, and its FORTRAN code is presented. The algorithm is based on the use of the product trapezoidal rule, after a non-linear transformation of the integrand in both variables renders a new integrand function whose derivatives vanish on the (transformed) boundary. Numerical results demonstrate the ability of the algorithm to obtain high accuracies in dealing automatically with pathological singularities of non-specific types.

Notes: Summary Today's mixed integer programming software packages are still not sophisticated enough to be treated as black boxes. Their efficiency can be augmented considerably by a deep knowledge of their functioning and the degrees of freedom they offer to the user. This paper describes at first the choices of the underlying branch and bound method in seven representative MIP-systems and demonstrates their usage, their profitability and their catches at illustrative examples. An account follows of the procedures and administrative facilities of commercial MIP-modules as far as they are submitted to user influence. An outlook is given on future developments, which can further improve the acceptance and the performance of MIP-software. Finally, some effort assessment criteria are proposed, which help judging the amount of work ahead before and at different stages during the solution process.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ziel der Personalplanung ist ein besserer Ausgleich zwischen Personalbedarf und -Verfügbarkeit.
Notes: Summary The purpose of manpower planning is to get a better matching between manpowerrequirement and manpower availability. The difficult part of manpower planning is to get reliable forecasts for future manpower requirement. It is important, therefore, to know what information one needs about the future to make good decisions now. How detailed should our knowledge of future manpower requirement be and of how far in the future? The last point is directly related to the problem of the planning horizon. This problem is investigated in this paper for a hierarchical manpower system with two grades, recruitment at the bottom and a promotion policy formulated in the grade-age (number of years in grade one). There is a goal on the total content of the system and a goal on the content of the second level. These goals may be interpreted as the future requirements. The penalties for deviations from the goals are assumed to be proportional to these deviations. The only way to control the system is by recruitment. For the case where all employees have the same career pattern one can get rather general results since this problem is almost equivalent to the case with only one grade. For the more general case it is only possible to get planning horizon results if conditions are added on the penalty functions and the goal patterns. The general two-level case appears to be equivalent to the production-smoothing problem without inventory with a lower bound on the difference between the hiring in two subsequent periods.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A focal point in the application of layout-planning methods lies in the planning of management and production in industrial companies. An enormous number of EDP-supported layout-planning systems have been developed for this purpose, the efficiency of which differs greatly from system to system. The purpose of this survey is to describe the present level of EDP-supported layout-planning. To that end, a general definition of the problem is given, and a record of the requirements for layout-planning in administration and production is being developed. The discussion of the present level of efficiency results from these requirement criteria. This survey closes with some points of emphasis that should be considered in future development projects.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers non-cooperative two-person zero-sum undiscounted stochastic games with finite state and action spaces. It is assumed that one player governs the transition rules. We give a linear programming algorithm and show, that an optimal solution to this program corresponds to the value of the game and to optimal stationary strategies for both players. Moreover, this linear programming formulation results in an existence proof of the value and of optimal stationary strategies for both players.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract MARKAL is a linear programming model of the energy supply used by the International Energy Agency for a long term technology evaluation to save oil. As a multi-period model, it covers a planning period of 40 years for all important sectors and technical processes within the energy economy. The model applications to the energy supplies of most industrialized western countries justify a certain scepticism about the chances for a substantial oil saving in the future.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Sampling methods taken for the yearly inventory can lead to important savings. Besides the statistical method the problems of application are discussed: The special organization of the company, the processing by EDP, the way to introduce the procedure etc. The paper is based on the original data of a company for electrical engineering. The sampling method for the inventory has been analysed since 1976; it is now used for the yearly inventory of nine stocks.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this paper by the means of duality-correspondences it is proved that the optimal value of the linear and linear-convex program is a lower semi-continuous function of the data (i.e. the matrix, the right side and the objective function), if the rank of certain matrices is constant. No conditions about boundedness or compactness of the constrained set and the set of optimal solutions are needed. It follows for a wide class of linear programs easily, that the set of optimal solutions depends continuously on the data.

Notes: Summary This paper describes the competition between oil, gas, coal, nuclear, hydro and geothermal energy, using today's technologies to satisfy Western world demand. This world is divided into 4 regions. The 1973–2000 time interval is broken down into 16 periods. At each period, producer and consumer equipments serve as constraints of a LP model which optimizes supply and demand in each region. The resulting equilibrium prices of primary resources and end-products induce modifications in the producer and consumer equipments of the following periods and the optimization process begins again.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The paper describes the application of numerical methods and OR models in the design, implementation and control of hardware configurations, computer networks and software projects for the use of data processing managers. Besides well known models like queuing network models of computer systems or the round robin model for time sharing systems models for actual questions like accounting and price policy, program and file allocation, software reliability or data security budgeting are discussed.

Notes: Summary In this paper we consider several variants of the standard successive-approximation method for (semi) Markov decision processes with unbounded rewards. Wessels and van Nunen have shown that a class of variants can be generated by randomized stopping times, where the probability of “stopping” the process at timen is independent of the actions taken up to timen. In this paper we allow the stopping time to depend on the actions as well as the states. This makes it possible to extend the class of solution techniques in such a way that properties of the reward and transition structure depending on the actions can be exploited in the development of appropriate successive-approximation methods. For a special actions-dependent stopping time the corresponding algorithm possesses the so-called “equal-row-sum” property, which can be used, for example, to transform semi-Markov decision processes into ordinary Markov decision processes. Moreover, the equal-row-sum transformation allows for good extrapolation to upper and lower bounds and elimination of non-optimal actions.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Calculating the net interest of bonds with fixed rate of interest is usually done by approximation. With the definition of “net interest” in mind, a method of determining the exact value by iteration with proven good convergence is described in this paper. Beginning with the simple case of a bond with a single date of maturity, payment of interest once a year and a running period of an integer number of years, the examination is extended to cover more than one payments of interest a year, non integer number of years until maturity and the particulars of serial bonds. The commonly used approximations are used because of their simple application, but it is shown that these sometimes cause markable errors. Therefore it is recommended to use the described alternative approximation with much less deviation.

Notes: Abstract A method is described for globally minimizing concave functions over convex sets whose defining constraints may be nonlinear. The algorithm generates linear programs whose solutions minimize the convex envelope of the original function over successively tighter polytopes enclosing the feasible region. The algorithm does not involve cuts of the feasible region, requires only simplex pivot operations and univariate search computations to be performed, allows the objective function to be lower semicontinuous and nonseparable, and is guaranteed to converge to the global solution. Computational aspects of the algorithm are discussed.

Notes: Abstract In the past decade various complementary pivoting algorithms have been developed to search for fixed points of certain functions and point to set maps. All these methods generate a sequence of simplexes which are ‘shrinking’ to a point. This paper proposes a new method for shrinking the simplexes. It is shown that under certain conditions, the function whose fixed point is sought may be used to control this shrinking process. A computational method for implementing these ideas is also suggested and several examples are solved using this approach.

Notes: Abstract Given a graphG = (V, E), leta S, S ∈ L, be the edge set incidence vectors of its nontrivial connected subgraphs. The extreme points ofℬ = {x ∈ R E: asx ≤ |V(S)| - |S|, S ∈ L} are shown to be integer 0/± 1 and characterized. They are the alternating vectorsb k, k ∈ K, ofG. WhenG is a tree, the extreme points ofB ≥ 0,b kx ≤ 1,k ∈ K} are shown to be the connected vectors ofG together with the origin. For the four LP's associated withℬ andA, good algorithms are given and total dual integrality ofℬ andA proven.

Notes: Abstract Since the original work of Dantzig and Wolfe in 1960, the idea of decomposition has persisted as an attractive approach to large-scale linear programming. However, empirical experience reported in the literature over the years has not been encouraging enough to stimulate practical application. Recent experiments indicate that much improvement is possible through advanced implementations and careful selection of computational strategies. This paper describes such an effort based on state-of-the-art, modular linear programming software (IBM's MPSX/370).

Notes: Abstract A new variable dimension simplicial algorithm for the computation of solutions of systems of nonlinear equations or the computation of fixed points is presented. It uses the restrart technique of Merrill to improve the accuracy of the solution. The algorithm is shown to converge quadratically under certain conditions. The algorithm should be efficient and relatively easy to implement.

Notes: Abstract Without using the l.p. duality theorem, we give a new and direct proof that Hoffman's lattice polyhedra, polyhedra from problems of Edmonds and Giles, and others, are integer. These polyhedra are intersections of more simple polyhedra such that every vertex of the initial polyhedron is a vertex of some simple polyhedron. In many cases encountered in combinatorics the simple polyhedra have a totally unimodular constraint matrix. This implies that all vertices of the initial polyhedron are integral. The proof is based on a theorem on submodular functions, which was not known earlier. The method of this paper can be applied to the consideration of the matching polyhedron.

Notes: Abstract This paper treats entropy constrained linear programs from modelling as well as computational aspects. The optimal solutions to linear programs with one additional entropy constraint are expressed in terms of Lagrange-multipliers. Conditions for uniqueness are given. Sensitivity and duality are studied. The Newton—Kantorovich method is used to obtain a locally convergent iterative procedure. Related problems based on maximum entropy or minimum information are discussed.

Notes: Abstract In an earlier paper we introduced an algorithm for approximating a fixed point of a mapping on the product space of unit simplices. Ideas of that paper are used to construct a class of triangulations ofR n. More precisely, for somek, 1 ≤k ≤ n, and positive integersm 1 ⋯ , mk with sumn, a triangulation ofR n is obtained by triangulating the cells which are formed by taking the product of given triangulations ofR mj, j = 1, ⋯ ,k. The triangulation of each cell will be defined in relation to an arbitrarily chosen pointv inR n, being the starting point of the algorithm. Fork = n we obtain theK′ triangulation originally due to Todd. Each element of the class can be used to find a simplex which approximates a fixed point of a mapping onR n by generating a unique path of adjacent simplices of variable dimension starting with the pointv. We also give convergence conditions. It is indicated how in casek = n a connected set of fixed points can be generated. Moreover, we give some computational experience.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a parametric linear complementarity technique for the computation of equilibrium prices in a single commodity spatial model. We first reformulate the model as a linear complementarity problem and then apply the parametric principal pivoting algorithm for its solution. This reformulation leads to the study of an “arc—arc weighted adjacency matrix” associated with a simple digraph having weights on the nodes. Several basic properties of such a matrix are derived. Using these properties, we show how the parametric principal pivoting algorithm can be greatly simplified in this application. Finally, we report some computational experience with the proposed technique for solving some large problems.

Notes: Abstract We consider the problem of routing vehicles stationed at a central facility (depot) to supply customers with known demands, in such a way as to minimize the total distance travelled. The problem is referred to as the vehicle routing problem (VRP) and is a generalization of the multiple travelling salesman problem that has many practical applications. We present tree search algorithms for the exact solution of the VRP incorporating lower bounds computed from (i) shortest spanningk-degree centre tree (k-DCT), and (ii)q-routes. The final algorithms also include problem reduction and dominance tests. Computational results are presented for a number of problems derived from the literature. The results show that the bounds derived from theq-routes are superior to those fromk-DCT and that VRPs of up to about 25 customers can be solved exactly.

Notes: Abstract We propose a new algorithm for the classical assignment problem. The algorithm resembles in some ways the Hungarian method but differs substantially in other respects. The average computational complexity of an efficient implementation of the algorithm seems to be considerably better than the one of the Hungarian method. In a large number of randomly generated problems the algorithm has consistently outperformed an efficiently coded version of the Hungarian method by a broad margin. The factor of improvement increases with the problem dimensionN and reaches an order of magnitude forN equal to several hundreds.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we demonstrate that the Van de Panne—Whinston symmetric simplex method when applied to a certain implicit formulation of a quadratic program generates the same sequence of primal feasible vectors as does the Von Hohenbalken simplicial decomposition algorithm specialized to the same program. Such an equivalence of the two algorithms extends earlier results for a least-distance program due to Cottle—Djang.

Notes: Abstract In this paper the so-called Broyden's boundedθ-class of methods is considered. It contains as a subclass Broyden's restrictedθ-class of methods, in which the updating matrices retain symmetry and positive definiteness. These iteration methods are used for solving unconstrained minimization problems of the following form: $$f(\hat x) = \min _{x \in R^n } f(x)$$ It is assumed that the step-size coefficientτ k = 1 in each iteration and the functionalf : R n → R1 satisfies the standard assumptions, viz.f is twice continuously differentiable and the Hessian matrix is uniformly positive definite and bounded (there exist constantsm, M 〉 0 such that m∥y∥2 ⩽ 〈y, $$m\parallel y\parallel ^2 \leqslant \left\langle {y,f(\hat x)\left. y \right\rangle } \right. \leqslant M\parallel y\parallel ^2 $$ for ally ∈ R n) and satisfies a Lipschitz-like condition at the optimal point $$\hat x$$ , the gradient vanishes at $$\hat x$$ Under these assumptions the local convergence of Broyden's methods is proved. Furthermore, the Q-superlinear convergence is shown.

Notes: Abstract The vertex packing problem for a given graph is to find a maximum number of vertices no two of which are joined by an edge. The weighted version of this problem is to find a vertex packingP such that the sum of the individual vertex weights is maximum. LetG be the family of graphs whose longest odd cycle is of length not greater than 2K + 1, whereK is any non-negative integer independent of the number (denoted byn) of vertices in the graph. We present an O(n 2K+1) algorithm for the maximum weighted vertex packing problem for graphs inG ≥ 1. A by-product of this algorithm is an algorithm for piecing together maximum weighted packings on blocks to find maximum weighted packings on graphs that contain more than one block. We also give an O(n 2K+3) algorithm for testing membership inG

Notes: Abstract This paper studies an optimization problem in which the objective function can not be completely given in closed form. In particular, we assume that some part of the objective function must be computed by an approximation process. This paper develops a technique for solving a class of such problems. Examples demonstrating the technique and problem areas in which it has been successfully applied are also given.

Notes: Abstract We present an algorithm for minimax optimization that combines LP methods and quasi-Newton methods. The quasi-Newton algorithm is used only if an irregular solution is detected, in which case second-order derivative information is needed in order to obtain a fast final rate of convergence. We prove that the algorithm can converge only to a stationary point and that normally the final rate of convergence will be either quadratic or superlinear. The performance is illustrated through some numerical examples.

Notes: Abstract This paper builds upon the relationship between the objective function of a semi-infinite linear program and its constraints to identify a class of semi-infinite linear programs which do not have a duality gap. The key idea is to guarantee the approximation of the primal program by a sequence of linear programs where thenth approximating program is to minimize the objective function subject to the firstn constraints. The paper goes on to show that any program not in the identified class can be linearly perturbed into it with the optimal value of the perturbed program converging to the optimal value of the original program. The results are then extended to the case when an uncountable number of constraints are present by reducing this case to the countable case.

Notes: Abstract Recently a duality theory for integer programming has been developed. Here we examine some of the economic implications of this theory, in particular the necessity of using price functions in place of prices, and the possibility of carrying out sensitivity analysis of optimal solutions. In addition we consider the form of price functions that are generated by known algorithms for integer programming.
