Notes: Stanford University, situated in California's Silicon Valley, is in a prime location to both study the emerging new media as well as to incorporate it into the academic programs. This opportunity arises at the same moment that Stanford is encouraging intellectual explorations across all disciplines on the campus. The Media-X project promotes collaborative efforts, not only on campus but between the Institution and the larger Silicon Valley community, exploring new opportunities in research, teaching and professional scholarship, as well as the implications for the Core Curriculum in the "new" liberal arts of the 21st century and beyond - Ed.

Notes: We discuss beneficial uses of imaging technologies in higher education that advance social justice. Misuse and ineffectiveness of shared decision making, specifically as related to power relationships and the redistribution of decision-making authority, are addressed through the development of technologically delivered experiential simulations (ES). We outline ways in which ES can change higher education preparation programs to meet and adapt to the challenges of the future. ES entails using computer technology to modify a person's appearance and thereby evoking an atypical response from an audience. The key to our proposal, however, is having the person with the modified persona learn lessons pertinent to democratic cultures and social justice from their experience of immersion in that response.

Notes: This paper addresses the persisting problem of stagnant productivity in the education sector and its contribution to escalating costs. An approach to improving learning productivity is proposed which emphasizes the integration of ICT, service learning, experiential learning, and cooperative learning. Thus, the fundamental theme of this paper is to link these four learning domains as a basic strategy to improve the quality and productivity of education and at the same time to reduce costs or limit cost increases. The advances in ICT and the concomitant "death of distance" greatly strengthen the potential for teachers to become facilitators to organize creative autonomous learning in diverse settings. Concrete examples are described from diverse cultural settings such as South Africa, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Chile, Japan, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Oregon. The paper concludes by offering a number of specific recommendations to improve learning productivity.

Notes: In this article I argue that teacher educators must prepare future classroom teachers to bridge innovation, digital and performance divides so that they are supported to develop new pedagogy that incorporates technology to increase student performance. In most of the teacher licensure programs at the University of Minnesota, where I direct its Ed-U-Tech project, a Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) grant, we are working towards these ends. In particular, I describe the eTIP Cases, an instructional tool that others and I have created to develop preservice teachers' technology integration abilities. These instructional cases are powered by IMMEX software, which provides embedded assessment capabilities. It is felt that the learning environments created by these cases and the response they demand help preservice teachers to develop the instructional planning and decision-making skills necessary to bridge innovation, digital and performance divides in K12 schools.

Notes: Invention arises from creativity, while innovation arises from invention. Innovation is not the last step in this sequence; innovations must be implemented through small and large changes in organizational practices before they can become operationally successful. The comparatively higher frequency and wider distribution of this process defines an innovation society and its economy. This article proposes a focus on the individual as the first beneficiary of preparatory and on-the-job-services to help evolve innovation societies for coping with five major "divides" currently driving the unequal distribution of global opportunity. To this end, the article proposes developing personal capital through role evolution, rehearsal, and assessment processes supported by "virtual" selves.

Notes: The thrust of this essay is that there is an increasing emphasis on the capabilities graduates need to have. We live in a changing, complex world and so post-secondary programs need to equip students with the capacity to adapt their learning into working in a variety of new situations. Planning for the unknown is always tricky and needs to be done with care. Using technology in designing post-secondary programs provides new opportunities but also adds another layer of complexity. Four aspects considered essential are: defining what we are asking students to ultimately achieve (graduate capabilities); designing at both program and course levels; working together in teams (the complexity demands that); and obtaining evidence that we are on the right track.

Notes: Advances in technology provide valuable opportunities for furthering the goals and methods of education. In this paper, we argue that, unfortunately, many of these opportunities are not seized because of restrictive conceptions of education that constrain teachers to viewing the educational mission primarily in terms of providing instruction. Adopting a pedagogical stance on this issue leads us to a fundamental rethink of how technology can and should be used. From this reconsideration, we conclude that using technology predominantly to provide access to learning content is a misguided use of technology. Technology is rendered more powerful for learning objectives when it is used to support learning-by-doing. Technological advancement on its own does not lead to better education. Pedagogical guidance is vital if technology is to be productive for human learning.

Notes: Many academics prefer to think of education as "work" rather than "fun". As a result, motivation in higher education rarely comes from the process itself. The author predicts this will change as the generation raised on the engagement of games no longer accepts the historical but unnecessary separation of fun and learning. The author offers the games world as an example of the process itself being motivating to the user. He ascribes this to "gameplay", the techniques used by game designers to keep players engaged. The author suggests several ways to bring the motivation of gameplay into education, and predicts that gameplay will eventually become the criterion by which students choose their courses.

Notes: One of the defining characteristics of higher education is the expectation that undergraduates will exercise some responsibility for the management of their learning. In the UK and elsewhere student self-managed learning has become more salient due to resource constraints and the increasing emphasis on equipping students with what they need to become lifelong learners. At the same time, as a result of widening access policies, developments in compulsory education systems and changing lifestyles, undergraduates appear less well prepared to cope with the demands of self-managed learning than might have been the case in the past. The problem is further compounded by the diversity of view amongst academic staff concerning the extent and nature of the support, which they should provide in this respect. Although the need for support will vary between institutions, all are faced, to a greater or lesser extent, with the challenge of ensuring that their learning and teaching strategies take account of the contingencies of self-managed learning

Notes: This paper projects a positive future for America and the globe within an emerging "innovation economy". The innovation economy is supported by knowledge workers and by emerging innovation workers. The authors offer examples in support of an innovation economy, stressing the development and application of strategic capital in selected areas: education; culture; the individual; society; and technology. The authors suggest that education services take the lead through a new "prospective" service mission. Prospective education would undertake continuous strategic projections and mine the most promising of these. Both services would help support the innovation economy and its innovative individuals and organizations.

Notes: Although online learning in American higher education is growing rapidly, online degree and certificate programs are usually either general or career-oriented. Notably lacking are fully online bachelor degree programs in the traditional liberal "arts and sciences" disciplines; a recent research inquiry found only a very few such programs are currently available. The availability of fully online degree programs is important for providing maximum access to education for geographically dispersed, highly mobile, and other learners. Available programs in liberal arts disciplines may also be an indicator of online learning as a well-regarded degree pathway. There may be several possible explanations for the current lack of these programs, such as lack of market demand, logistical obstacles, and greater focus on blended learning delivery approaches. Despite current obstacles, rising demand for online courses, increased partnership ventures, and other factors suggest an emerging market which will result in greater future availability for such programs.

Notes: As student self-managed learning becomes an increasingly significant element of campus-based higher education courses, so action is required to ensure that academic staff are primed to deal with the challenges involved. Reconciling the needs and inclinations of students with the capabilities and disposition of academic staff in this respect is not for the faint-hearted. It calls for an active and sensitive leadership that is prepared to endorse revised understandings of academic development and academic discretion and to put in place measures designed to bring about their realisation.

Notes: Presents the results of an Internet survey of all the humanities faculties in Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands and the UK and of a review of the international debate both on sustainability in general and education for sustainability in particular. Argues for a complex, transdisciplinary and broad approach to education for sustainability (EfS). Such an approach has to acknowledge the relative relevance of education within contemporary society, along with other "educators" such as the media, the economy and the shadow curriculum of institutional practice. It has to be fully aware of the reasons and the extent of the unsustainability of our current situation, but it also has to sketch out what a sustainable society might mean. Only on this basis can we then develop effective and sensible proposals for EfS. Ends with ten practical strategies to further EfS in higher education institutions.

Notes: Discusses the extent to which environmental management is considered a mainstream business activity within Australian and New Zealand universities. Describes how a survey instrument was used to collect data on environmental programs, their resourcing and control processes, and the level of community involvement in their development and ongoing management. These indicators of mainstreaming are discussed and particular reference is made to the Australian National University (ANU) and its experience with mainstreaming environmental management. The survey data indicate that in the majority of the surveyed institutions, environmental management cannot be considered a mainstream business activity. To aid universities in assessing their progress towards mainstreaming, a conceptual framework is presented and a model of organisational change is discussed.

Notes: The Design for the Environment Multimedia Implementation Project - demi - links design and sustainability information in a Web-based resource and was set up in response to a number of UK Government reports which highlighted the dearth of knowledge and activity about sustainability in higher education design courses across the country. This paper details the design and development of demi, discussing its content, structure and educational potential. Also included is an investigation of design and sustainability pedagogy, which discusses the importance to the demi Web-resource of a sustainability (rather than design) context and an exploration of the possible transferability of the demi structure to other disciplines, promoting practical and widespread action in education for sustainability.

Notes: This article observes how, in today's common building practice, design practitioners seldom utilize the expertise of researchers in building-related fields. The lack of the collaboration may be due as much to the "applicability gap" between research and practice as to the lack of a clearly defined role of researchers in building design. Most institutions' research groups and facilities planning offices are generally not set up to collaborate with the design and engineering professionals. This study, however, found design teams' collaboration with academic and research institutions to be instrumental in the successful development and implementation of technological innovations in architectural projects. It discusses the findings and provides partnership strategies between the institutions, as large-building owners, and the building professionals, as design providers.

Notes: The paper describes how, in the first few weeks of each semester, the architecture students and faculty at Philadelphia University participate in a Survivor Competition. Inspired by the campy show where contestants battle the elements and each other for a million dollars, Survivor Studio pits teams of design students and faculty against each other to accumulate points in a variety of physical, intellectual and design challenges. Geared towards heightening the students' respect for natural systems, understanding of indigenous cultures and the poetic potential for sustainable technologies, the challenges attempt to develop relationships with the students' non-design studio curriculum. This included a game show on the history of architecture, the reading and interpretation of a novel called Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit, and a research documentation project focused on sustainable architecture and technologies developed by indigenous cultures. Physical challenges included scavenger hunts around campus that highlighted strategy, teamwork and knowledge/sensitivity to local environments. The main challenge for the students was to design a small community that could sustain the team without food or power or any supplies for one year. It elaborates on the ideas, pedagogical concepts, teaching strategies and eventual results of the Survivor Studio as a vehicle for exploring new and innovative ways to activate students' imagination, energy and innate knowledge about sustainable design.

Notes: Universities and colleges, as societal educational institutions, have relatively recently attempted to begin to upgrade their multiple relationships with their natural environments, as have other institutions. However, "greening" initiatives of higher education institutions appear to have received far less attention in various bodies of academic literature than have the environmental policies and practices of these other institutions. This article highlights four US universities' "campus ecology" projects, initially characterizing major elements of each, using a common organizational effectiveness model which has been widely employed in organization-related academic fields.

Notes: This paper introduces a new distance learning course, "Working with our environment: technology for a sustainable future". An inter-disciplinary team within the Technology Faculty of the Open University developed this undergraduate course, which enrols over 1,500 students per year. One of the overall course aims is to help students understand how the use of technology to meet human material needs contributes to environmental effects. The process of producing this course, its philosophy, aims and design will be briefly discussed. At the start of the course a lifestyle environmental assessment activity, called EcoCal, is integrated within students' study materials. The activity enables students to assess the main impacts on the environment arising from their own households' consumption of transport, energy, food and water and production of waste. Through the use either of a printed questionnaire or publicly available software students can calculate their "ecological footprints" and then consider and model the effects of changes to their lifestyles. Through the combination of undertaking this activity and submitting an appropriate assignment, students are encouraged to think critically and creatively about their personal and household impacts on the environment and how these might be reduced. At the end of the course students are surveyed to explore whether their attitudes and behaviour have changed.

Notes: At present, an historical conjuncture of separate and essential unrelated developments concerning environmental management are occurring in South Africa. These include the issues of standards assurance, certification of environmental practitioners and the development of curricula for a professional science degree at a tertiary level. All these are occurring in the context of a rapidly expanding job market into which graduates with widely varying educational standards and practical competence are entering. This paper reports on a survey of professionals in environmental impact assessment and environmental management in South Africa which elicited opinions on the quality and appropriateness of professional training. It seeks to inform debate concerning these topics and to highlight limitations in the structure and content of contemporary education. It is argued that there is little standardization across curricula and that the core competencies as recognized by professionals are frequently being neglected.

Notes: Colleges and universities that adopt the attractive but abstract goal of sustainability are intellectually honest only if they go on to devise operational approaches to meet that goal. Improved environmental performance is laudable, but may or may not be equivalent to sustainability. This paper proposes and discusses five areas in which college and university performance can be definitely linked with sustainability: energy use, water use, use of land, purchase of products and treatment of them at the end of their useful lives, and emissions to air, water, and land. For each, a quantitative target can be defined and defended. Colleges and universities that meet these targets can legitimately call themselves "sustainable".

Notes: This article is written by the chairman and a panel member of the UK Benchmarking Group in Earth Science, Environmental Science and Environmental Studies. In it we have discussed the broad "purpose" of benchmarking and the timescale and remit afforded to the group. As far as the benchmark statement itself is concerned, we have reviewed the statement section by section concentrating especially both on the rationale underpinning each section and the way in which the statement may be used for the purpose of academic review. Finally, we have looked briefly at the process of academic review itself, in so far as it is understood at the moment. Although we are confident that the Benchmarking Group as a whole would agree with the vast majority of this article, nonetheless it must be seen as representing only our own views.

Notes: This article focuses on attempts to introduce elements of sustainable development education into the curriculum of one of the largest Russian universities. At St Petersburg State University, compulsory courses relevant to sustainable development have been introduced or modified in 14 faculties out of 20 during the last decade. Examples of environmentally oriented projects within and outside the university are given. The authors touch upon the state of affairs in higher education in Russia, and write about sustainable development in a wider sense, beyond the environmental context. Sustainable development in education for Russia is one of the most important prerequisites for sustainable development in society. A model for reforming the system of national higher education is given to illustrate possible ways of achieving sustainability in education.

Notes: Presents a case study of an interdisciplinary, graduate-level seminar on the topic of international and business sector differences in approaches to sustainable development. The importance of the course is that it mixed culture, business and environmental sciences in a study of sustainability. The pedagogical structure of the course was designed to enable students to learn necessary skills for interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and cross-business sector communication about environmental issues through their participation in the course. Discusses course design specifics and presents results of a student survey about the effectiveness of the course. Overall, students did find participation in the course helpful for improving their ability to communicate about environmental issues across disciplines, cultures, and industries. Students also highlighted several key cultural aspects that contribute to the different ways in which countries and businesses within them respond to environmental issues.

Notes: For 11 years, the Division of Applied Science, University of Paderborn, has offered a four-year undergraduate technical environmental protection course. More than 500 graduates have completed the programme so far. By means of regular surveys, the job situations of the graduates are evaluated, and feedback about the strengths and weaknesses of the education is requested. In addition, the faculty members keep in close contact with potential employers by supervising students during their professional practical training and by joint projects. The results of this exchange of information and ideas with respect to the professional situation and perspective are described.

Notes: Support for environmental research has a long tradition at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. A new funding priority establishes a new substantive priority area - sustainable management. The purpose is to develop strategies and solutions for sustainable management and test them in real life through cooperation between research institutions, industry and consumers. The results of 18 collaborative projects should help to exploit the potential for sustainable management in the private sectors, set new priorities in research on business management and initiate standardisation processes towards sustainable management. A support process has to pass the results of the projects as well as their implications for sustainable management on to potential users. The research projects altogether cover four priority areas; namely, information technology instruments, controlling instruments, planning instruments and communication instruments.

Notes: The paper describes Emory University's campus self-guided walking tour, a pleasant activity that heightens environmental awareness and builds a stronger connection to place. Brochures present ten sites and facts about forests and water (including damage from storm surges, erosion, and invasive species), the built environment (including new "green" building efforts), and campus history (including architectural strategies, past faculty activism, and commitments by campus administrators). The tour highlights trade-offs and tensions among issues and teaches by raising questions. Issues of health, natural beauty, campus growth, and quality of life are also presented. Guided introductions to the tour seem to be most effective, though the brochure is also powerful used alone. A fun activity for a group, the walking tour builds community and awakens interest among those not otherwise engaged in environmental activities.

Notes: This article contributes to an emerging dialogue about how we can accelerate progress towards institutionalizing a commitment to campus environmental sustainability throughout the university sector. It seeks to utilize progress made to date, in the field of "greening" universities, looking deeply into these experiences, to learn from them and to start revealing how they may inform us to move into the realm of widespread institutional transformation. It presents a range of insights, lessons learned and preferred approaches emerging from seven years of implementing campus environmental programs in universities both in Australia and the USA. Many of these ideas have been further informed during a Churchill Fellowship, spent investigating campus environment initiatives in over 30 universities in Europe and the USA. To assist in giving further weight to the material presented, it draws upon the work of a various authors of organizational change, leadership and management publications. The subject-matter is wide-ranging as it is intended as a starting-point for the reader to pick and choose ideas that may warrant further investigation in their own university context. Even though many of the ideas presented need further exploration and development, in their current state they may prove of some value to the reader as a catalyst for a different level of institutional analysis.

Notes: Sustainable health care combines three key factors: quality patient care, fiscally responsible budgeting and minimizing environmental impact. Although pollution is well understood as a health problem, US health planners have not fully recognized the need to reduce health-care pollution. Minimizing health-care pollution, moreover, requires reducing the throughput of energy and materials. Ultimately, sustaining healthy ecosystems requires that health-care material and energy utilization be limited. However, traditional conceptions of health-care ethics maintain a philosophy of rescue that makes limiting life-saving resources, except at a patient's request, morally worrisome. Moreover, the media image of health care as technologically intensive, together with the common medical view that nature is the enemy, render suspect philosophical perspectives respectful of Earth's limits. Nevertheless, academic medical centers have advantages as sites for pursuing sustainability: students often uphold environmental ideals, a public health perspective, and an interest in providing services universally; basic biomedical research on campus permits innovative research combining health and environmental considerations; opportunities exist for including environmental concerns in health professional education; some academic medical centers have already stated environmental criteria for purchasing contracts; and health-care professionals and institutions are increasingly addressing such environmental concerns as mercury use, latex allergies, dioxin pollution, and waste volume. To address these challenges, a visioning process is proposed, designed to formulate a practical plan by means of public, local, and professional participation in the process of articulating creative and morally sound proposals for change.

Notes: The Philippines is one of the signatories to the historic Agenda 21 and was noted to be among the first countries to establish a National Council for Sustainable Development. Ten years after Rio, global society is again confronted with the question of whether sustainable development as a concept, philosophy and practice has improved the lives of peoples in different countries and cultures. This article attempts to discuss initiatives through which tertiary education has helped bring about sustainable development in the Philippines. It posits that for sustainable development to happen it must take root in the consciousness and cultures of society, a task in which education plays a very important part. The article discusses the efforts of two national networks for environmental education, the Environmental Education Network of the Philippines, Inc. (EENP) and the Philippine Association of Tertiary Level Educational Institutions in Environmental Protection and Management (PATLEPAM), which advocate for the integration of sustainable development in school curricula as well as in campus administration and organizational culture. It also includes the pioneering efforts of one institution, Miriam College, to integrate environmental education in its programs as part of its mission and commitment to become a genuine "steward of creation".

Notes: The paper refers to a "beautifying and landscaping the university campus" competition held in June 2001 to improve the learning and working environment of the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong. One of the proposed themes in the form of an education trail, which aims to provide a better understanding of the principles and operations of renewable energy in solar, wind, hydro, wave, geothermal and biomass, is to be illustrated as a case study at the city centre campus of the Polytechnic University. The same facility will also serve as an invaluable resource for teaching, applied research as well as community education on renewable energy. It discusses the objectives and tentative strategies in the design of this education trail.

Notes: This article focuses on the need for universities, as teaching and research organisations, to recognise and act upon a more culturally inclusive interpretation of "sustainable development" and "sustainability". It argues for the valuing of indigenous worldviews as a means of achieving a more holistic and interdisciplinary way of thinking about the Earth as the home of all people and as a complement to the beliefs of Western science and rational objective thinking. At a more personal level, it challenges readers, especially academics, to re-examine their own ways of thinking and knowing for the sake of creating sustainable futures that are inclusive in its processes, contexts and outcomes.

Notes: It is higher education's responsibility to continuously challenge and critique value and knowledge claims that have prescriptive tendencies. Part of this responsibility lies in engaging students in socio-scientific disputes. The ill-defined nature of sustainability manifests itself in such disputes when conflicting values, norms, interests, and reality constructions meet. This makes sustainability - its need for contextualization and the debate surrounding it - pivotal for higher education. It offers an opportunity for reflection on the mission of our universities and colleges, but also a chance to enhance the quality of the learning process. This paper explores both the overarching goals and process of higher education from an emancipatory view and with regard to sustainability.

Notes: This paper explores issues related to the choice of goals and approaches for advancing sustainability in higher education through research. The paper argues that the diverse nature of the questions, issues and problems facing advocates of sustainability in higher education requires a willingness to adopt an eclectic approach to the choice of research methodologies or paradigms. The views of reality and knowledge embedded in alternative research paradigms - empirical analytical, interpretive, critical, and poststructural paradigms - are summarised briefly. The relevance of the four paradigms is illustrated by taking two issues of sustainability in higher education and exploring how they would be addressed by each one. The two issues are: campus catering services and integrating the principles of the Earth Charter into an engineering degree program. The paper concludes by reviewing the debate over whether this eclectic position is consistent with the goals of advancing sustainability in higher education.

Notes: This article describes initiatives at the University of Costa Rica, which, in combination with national programs, have strengthened the country's commitment to sustainable development over the past 15 years. It discusses the university's role in defining a national perspective on sustainability starting in 1987, as well as the evolution of the university's Programa Institucional de Sostenibilidad y Paz (PRINSOPAZ) from being university focused to joining with the Earth Council to promote the Earth Charter both nationally and internationally.

Notes: This paper analyzes recent efforts to measure sustainability in higher education across institutions. The benefits of cross-institutional assessments include: identifying and benchmarking leaders and best practices; communicating common goals, experiences, and methods; and providing a directional tool to measure progress toward the concept of a "sustainable campus". Ideal assessment tools identify the most important attributes of a sustainable campus, are calculable and comparable, measure more than eco-efficiency, assess processes and motivations and are comprehensible to multiple stakeholders. The 11 cross-institutional assessment tools reviewed in this paper vary in terms of stage of development and closeness to the "ideal tool". These tools reveal (through their structure and content) the following critical parameters to achieving sustainability in higher education: decreasing throughput; pursuing incremental and systemic change simultaneously; including sustainability education as a central part of curricula; and engaging in cross-functional and cross-institutional efforts.
