Notes: Summary The elastic properties of Poly-4-methylpentene-1 around the melt transition have been studied by Brillouin spectroscopy. A discontinuous change of the sound velocity is observed in the melting region of 10 K indicating a rather discontinuous melting and formation of spherulites with sharp boundaries. Another result is that practically the final elastic properties of the spherulites appear already during their formation.

Notes: Cathodic deposition of paint (CDP) is Well introduced for the industrial coating of primers onto steel since nearly two decades. Epoxy resins provide optimum results. There is an increasing demand to apply the same technique for aluminium, especially for mixed constructions Fe/Al in motor car bodies. However, this metal may be attacked by the OH--ions, generated by the cathodic electrolysis of water according to: H2O + e- → ½ H2 + OH-. The Al2O3 · xH2O protecting layer may dissolve slowly as aluminate and Al-metal then reacts rapidly with water to generate the threefold volume of hydrogen under the reestablishment of the oxide layer. Thus, the overall reaction for this cathodic corrosion of Al is given by: Al + 2H2O + e- → AlO2- + 2H2.It can be foreseen, that the changes at the phase boundary Al, AlOOH/paint and the accumulation of hydrolysed aluminate in the coating may influence, among other, the corrosion protection behavior of the paint layers. A systematic study of the influence of four different industrial epoxy resins from BASF Lacks & Farben AG (1)-(4) with their individual pigment systems, the one for paint (3) to be free of lead silicate, was undertaken. Seven different aluminium (alloy) substrates were employed. Their pretreatment modes were mostly due to zincphosphatation. Three standard corrosion tests for conventional corrosion, (CC) and one for filiform corrosion (FFC) were employed and evaluated, as usual. The accelerated open air corrosion test lasted 360 days.It was found, that for CC the corrosion protection capability was predominantly influenced by the resin, and it decreased in the following order: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ (4) 〉 (2) 〉 (1),\,(3). $$\end{document}The effect of the substrate was not very pronounced, but a relative optimum could be seen with Al Mg 0.4 Si 1.2-chromate pretreatment and Bonazinc 2000® and with Al Mg 1.5 Si 0.5 Cu 4.0-chromate pretreatment (with one exception). The ranking for FFC changed to: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ (2) 〉 (3) 〉 〉 (1),\,(4), $$\end{document}, and zincphosphated Al Mg 3 was superior over all the other substrates. The analytically determined rate of cathodic corrosion for unpigmented paints did not correlate to these results, and this may be indicative for specific pigment effects. In conclusion, this systematic study reveals, on the basis of practical systems and corrosion test methods, a way for the optimization of CDP on aluminium.

Notes: Abstract. Laser ablation with femtosecond pulses (130 fs, wavelength 800 nm, repetition rate 2 Hz) was compared with nanosecond-pulse ablation (10 ns, wavelength 266 nm, repetition rate 2.5 Hz) of bariumalumoborosilicate glass in air using the direct focusing technique. Different ablation thresholds and heat-affected zones were observed. The lateral and vertical machining precision was evaluated. Single nanosecond laser pulses in the far UV resulted in a bubble or a circular hole in the centre of the illuminated spot, depending on the applied fluence. The ablation behaviour in the case of near-IR femtosecond pulses contrasted to this. Bubble formation was not detected. It needed repeated pulses at the same spot to modify the surface until material removal could be observed (incubation). Cavity dimensions of less than the beam diameter were achieved in this case.

Description / Table of Contents: Possibilities and Consequences of Lightweight Design - Examples of the Operating Strength of Frontaxles-, Steering Systems- and Drive ComponentsThe aim of extensive weight reductions in car construction leads on the one hand to the increasingly exploiting use of traditional materials, and on the other to the use of lighter materials. This trend can be detected in body and trim features, but also in running gear, steering systems and drive components. When choosing alternative materials it should be borne in mind that alongside the often many-sided aspects of function and reliability, economy frequently has a decisive influence. In this paper the dynamic and static test rig results from parts made of different materials are described and compared: control arm, steering shaft, conrod and prop shaft.

Notes: Abstract A reinvestigation of the single phase aggregate model (SPAM) of Ward applied to the elastic properties of uniaxially oriented polymers is presented. It is shown that the Voigt and the Reuss orientation average of elastic constants can be represented as a linear transformation in a 5-dimensional vector space. The corresponding transformation matrix can be diagonalized, showing that the eigenvalues of this transformation are the orientation parametersP 0 =1,P 2 andP 4 . Taking advantage of this representation an easy test of applicability of the SPAM is proposed. Possibilities to evaluate the SPAM parameters are reviewed.

Notes: Abstract General aspects of high performance Brillouin spectroscopy in polymers using special scattering geometries such as 90A-scattenng geometry are discussed. Technical improvements are reported resulting in absolute accuracies up to 0.05 % for sound velocity determination. A method of data analysis is presented delivering simultaneously the complete set of elastic stiffness constants. The influence of birefringence on the Brillouin line shifts in anisotropic polymeric systems is estimated and techniques to reduce this influence are proposed. The determination of the principal refractive indices by Brillouin spectroscopy is discussed. Furthermore, a quantityD X , which is sensitive to hypersonic relaxation processes, is introduced.

Notes: The empirical equation, 1/ti = AeEi/RT, which expresses the exponential dependence of the reciprocal of crystallization induction time, ti, has been analyzed and shown to be equivalent to the nucleation rate equations derived earlier in Part III (1). Consequently we have used the ti measurements obtained earlier by Krueger and Yeh to calculate not only the nucleation rate enhancements but also the melting point elevations, the relative crystal thickness changes and molecular coil extension ratios of shear-crystallization polyethylene. It is shown that polyethylene when crystallized between 129 and 131°C at shear rates between 1.56 and 9.70 sec-1 can have melting point increases of 4.2 to 7.2°C and crystal thickness decreases of 20 to 25 percent, when compared to those crystallized at 130°C in the quiescent state. The predicted “coil” extension in the melt just prior to shear-induced crystallization ranges between 21 and 36 percent. The results of these analyses as well as those on nucleation rates of polyethylene oxide are discussed in detail.

Notes: Abstract High resolution Brillouin spectroscopy (BS) has been used to investigate elastic and optical properties of uniaxially drawn samples of polycarbonate (PC). The results are discussed in the framework of the single phase aggregate model (SPAM) of Ward. According to a recently developed evaluation technique, the SPAM parameters of PC are determined, resulting in the following elastic constants of the structural units:c 33 0 =33 GPa,c 11 0 =7 GPa,c 13 0 =9.7 GPa,c 44 0 =1.4 GPa, andc 66 0 =1 GPa. A nearly quadratic dependence of the orientation parameterP 4 onP 3 results, which can be explained by a modified pseudoaffine deformation scheme.

Notes: Summary Riemann polar/normal coordinates are the constituents to generate the oblique azimuthal projection of geodesic type, here applied to the “reference” ellipsoid of revolution (biaxial ellipsoid).Firstly we constitute a minimal atlas of the biaxial ellipsoid built on {ellipsoidal longitude, ellipsoidal latitude} and {metalongitude, metalatitude}. TheDarboux equations of a 1-dimensional submanifold (curve) in a 2-dimensional manifold (biaxial ellipsoid) are reviewed, in particular to represent geodetic curvature, geodetic torsion and normal curvature in terms of elements of the first and second fundamental form as well as theChristoffel symbols. The notion of ageodesic anda geodesic circle is given and illustrated by two examples. The system of twosecond order ordinary differential equations of ageodesic (“Lagrange portrait”) is presented in contrast to the system of twothird order ordinary differential equations of ageodesic circle (Proofs are collected inAppendix A andB). A precise definition of theRiemann mapping/mapping of geodesics into the local tangent space/tangent plane has been found.Secondly we computeRiemann polar/normal coordinates for the biaxial ellipsoid, both in theLagrange portrait (“Legendre series”) and in theHamilton portrait (“Lie series”).Thirdly we have succeeded in a detailed deformation analysis/Tissot distortion analysis of theRiemann mapping. The eigenvalues — the eigenvectors of the Cauchy-Green deformation tensor by means of ageneral eigenvalue-eigenvector problem have been computed inTable 3.1 andTable 3.2 (Λ1, Λ2 = 1) illustrated inFigures 3.1, 3.2 and3.3. Table 3.3 contains the representation ofmaximum angular distortion of theRiemann mapping. Fourthly an elaborate global distortion analysis with respect toconformal Gauβ-Krüger, parallel Soldner andgeodesic Riemann coordinates based upon theAiry total deformation (energy) measure is presented in a corollary and numerically tested inTable 4.1. In a local strip [-l E,l E] = [-2°, +2°], [b S,b N] = [-2°, +2°]Riemann normal coordinates generate the smallest distortion, next are theparallel Soldner coordinates; the largest distortion by far is met by theconformal Gauβ-Krüger coordinates. Thus it can be concluded that for mapping of local areas of the biaxial ellipsoid surface the oblique azimuthal projection of geodesic type/Riemann polar/normal coordinates has to be favored with respect to others.

Notes: Abstract Uniaxially stretched samples of PMMA were investigated by Brillouin Spectroscopy (BS). From the velocity of hypersound we could determine most of the elastic constants. Using a recently developed analysis [1] it is demonstrated that the properties of this polymer can be well described by the aggregate model. This result offers the possibility of mapping the mechanical properties by birefringence measurements. The dependence of the fourth momentP 4 on the second momentP 2 is identical with that determined for PC [2] and follows, in the measured range, that of an affine orientational state. Nevertheless, the dependence on the stretching ratio differs for different molecular weights. Thus the partition of the deformation into an orientational and an elongational contribution, as has been proposed [3], seems to be well founded. The partition depends on the stretching conditions.
