Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the advantages of using spreadsheets for problem specification and report generation in optimization projects. It summarizes some of the mathematical programming software which is compatible with popular spreadsheets. A small production planning problem is used to illustrate the steps in input and processing of the results. Two programs are compared in detail.

Notes: Abstract A stochastic model is developed describing a service system subject to inhomogeneous Poisson interruptions with age dependent interruption periods. By studying the probabilistic flow of the underlying multivariate Markov process, the Laplace transform of the effective service time is explicitly obtained. For general renewal interruptions, only the expected effective service time is derived. As an application, an optimal checkpoint policy is examined for database management. It is shown that an optimal policy maximizing the ergodic availability of the database is to implement a checkpoint as soon as the cumulative uptime of the database reaches a prespecified constantk *. A computational procedure is then developed for findingk * and numerical results are exhibited.

Notes: Abstract This paper provides a summary of some OR/MS software for microcomputers. Lists of packages in many management science techniques are included. A bibliography of other papers is also included. We also summarize the general features of packages in each category. Finally, we mention a few sources to help the reader keep up with the developments in this area.

Notes: Abstract Managing the volume of experimental and/or simulation data required for large-scale design studies can be a significant problem. This paper describes a method for dealing with this problem, using response surface methodology. The method involves (1) determining a summary parameterization of the response of the underlying process mechanism generating the data, in order to characterize this response in terms of a manageable set of performance measures, and (2) deriving a model of the data, in order to summarize the dependence of the performance measures on selected predictor or design variables. The method is illustrated by its application to a problem in vehicle collision research.

Notes: Abstract In commercial and administrative ADP it often happens that there is one large master file and many output files are to be made from this. One possible solution to avoid using the master file many times is to construct from it a few extraction files and from these compile the output files. In the following paper a method is described to define the extraction files and to optimize their contents by zero-one programming. An algorithm and an example are presented in a simplified case.

Notes: Abstract Data processing nowadays represents a considerable investment and it is important to use computers as efficiently as possible. Criteria separating the best alternative from other ones would be very useful. In this article we have tried to find some criteria for the optimization of register maintenance applying the simplest methods of operations research. In particular the use of a change register has been investigated.

Notes: Summary An anaerobic filter system with a volume of 11 l fed with wastewater from the Swiss sugar refinery in Frauenfeld was established on a laboratory scale. It provided a filter performance of over 8 kg COD·m−3·d−1 with an efficiency of at least 70%. A 600–1 pilot plant system in the factory gave a degradation efficiency of 70% when fed with 28 kg COD·m−3·d−1 and yielded 0.34 m3 methane/kg COD, demonstrating that the scaling-up of the anaerobic filter had been successful. The rapidly-varying concentrations of organic materials in the wasterwater required the constant control of the wastewater flow to the system. A control program was developed for a small computer using an empirical model simulating the operator. By varying the influx rate of the wastewater to the anaerobic filter the computer kept the system at an optimal organic load. The results obtained were equivalent to those obtained by permanent control of the system by an operator.

Notes: Abstract Neutronic calculations were performed to optimize the SENRI blanket in terms of energy multiplication as well as tritium breeding ratio. The blanket employs a thick (∼ 64-cm) Li layer as breeder/coolant. Three approaches were taken here to achieve the goal: (1) reduction of6Li in the lithium, (ii) replacement of the Li layer by a molten-salt (flibe) layer, and (iii) shipment of excess tritium to a nonbreeding blanket. It was found that the excess tritium produced in the SENRI blanket could be used effectively to obtain additional power by fueling a nonbreeding D-T reactor.

Notes: Abstract With the aid of a kinetic model, we have investigated how the adaptation between the various components of the tRNA cycle and the codon frequencies affects the rate of protein synthesis. Depending on the relative amounts of total tRNA, synthetase and ribosomes, the optimal correlations vary between a situation where all tRNA species are either present in equal amounts or are present in amounts proportional to the square-root of the corresponding codon frequencies, and a situation where the amounts of the different tRNA species present are linearly proportional to the codon frequencies.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the relationship between algorithm construction and optimal decision processes. We provide a sufficient condition, a linear ordering over the experiment set, for when we can efficiently use an optimization approach for selecting a decision strategy. We demonstrate the linear ordering condition within the context of the file search problem; however, any problem whose representation satisfies the linear ordering condition is amenable to the optimization approach.
