Abstract: This book compiles selected articles presented at the International Conference on Biotechnology & Biological Sciences, BIOSPECTRUM 2017, organized by the Department of Biotechnology, University of Engineering & Management, Kolkata. Focusing on biotechnology-based analysis and intervention to address certain human diseases, the book includes a holistic discourse on disease profiling, molecular level analysis of diseases, and non-invasive medical interventions. It features articles on non-invasive treatment of iron deficiency anemia with iron nanoparticles; novel diagnosis methods based on microarray data; analysis using machine learning techniques like artificial neural network for early detection and treatment of cancer; and drug discovery for preventing the growth of human leukemic cells. Further, the book sheds light on in silico drug design using lipopeptides, and identifying the binding sites for their corresponding ligands. Presenting the concepts of the design of potent and safe antimicrobial compounds to fight multi drug resistant pathogens, it also includes interesting reviews on the design and development of various non-invasive methods, such as multi NIR wavelength probes to identify the risk areas in the diabetic foot at an early stage; and a low-cost cochlear implant prototype designed and developed from commercial off the-shelf components to empower the hearing impaired. The book appeals to students, academics and researchers in a wide range of subject areas, including biotechnology, life sciences, medicine and cancer research.

Abstract: This book discusses the different regulatory pathways for Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products implemented by national agencies in North and South America, Europe and Asia and by international bodies in the effort of international harmonization. This book represents an update of the first edition, as it covers regulatory novelties and accumulated experience in the regions already addressed. In addition, this new edition offers a wider international perspective: new chapters are included covering Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products regulations in India, Malaysia, Spain and Thailand, the European Pharmacopoeia texts for gene therapy medicinal products as well as international harmonization programs. Each chapter, authored by experts from various regulatory bodies throughout the international community, walks the reader through the applications of nonclinical research to translational clinical research to licensure and therapeutic use of these innovative products. More specifically, each chapter offers insights into fundamental considerations that are essential for developers of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products in the areas of product quality, pharmacology and toxicology, clinical trial design and HTA pathways, as well as pertinent ‘must-know’ guidelines and regulations. Regulatory Aspects of Gene Therapy and Cell Therapy Products: a Global Perspective is part of the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy sub-series of the highly successful Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology series. It is essential reading for graduate students, clinicians, and researchers interested in gene and cell therapy and the regulation of pharmaceuticals.

Description / Table of Contents: Chapter 1 Introduction -- Chapter 2 Unconventional functions of transcription factors -- GAGA transcription factor -- Heterochromatin protein 1 -- Retinoblastoma protein -- STAT -- ATF-2 -- NF-kB -- Chapter 3 STAT and HP1, in their unconventional roles, promote longevity and protect against DNA damage and cancer -- STAT and HP1 promote longevity -- STAT and HP1 protect against DNA damage -- Increased levels of STAT and HP1 hinder carcinogenesis in a mouse xenograft model -- Chapter 4 The possible biological significance of transcription factors’ unconventional functions -- The epigenome -- Processes in the cell nucleus -- Future Work.
Abstract: This SpringerBrief explores unconventional functions of eight different transcription factors and concludes with a discussion of their biological significance and impact, including effects on processes within the cell nucleaus during development and in adult organisms. Chapter One details unconventional functions of the transcription factors GAGA, HP1, Rb, STAT, ATF-2 and NF-kB. Surprisingly, all of these transcription factors can be found in association with heterochromatin as well as euchromatin, and in some cases unconventional functions have been demonstrated for these heterochromatin-associated factors. Chapter Two focuses on the unconventional functions of STAT and HP1 and discusses their roles in the promotion of longevity, and in protection from cancer and DNA damage. Chapter Three explores the biological significance of the findings presented in the first two chapters and considers how global changes in the epigenome brought about by factors such as STAT and HP1 might affect processes within the cell nucleus during development and in adult organisms. This succinct yet thorough SpringerBrief is essential for researchers studying epigenetics, and to instructors of the subject. It should also appeal to people interested in the control of gene transcription and other processes in the cell nucleus, and to those interested in development.

Abstract: Can we move forward with the use of CRISPR in humans without a well-formed policy and ethical framework to support it? In this new book, neuroscientist Michael W. Nestor and philosopher Richard Wilson argue that the answer is a resounding “no.” Does an ethical and policy program need to be restrictive concerning the use of CRISPR in humans? Nestor and Wilson argue that, although the future of gene editing in humans is inevitable using CRISPR technologies, the scientific, policy, ethics, and clinical communities must work together to provide the necessary frameworks to help CRISPR flourish as an essential tool to treat human disease. To achieve the most inclusive, equitable, and ethically sound use of CRISPR in humans, the scientific/policy/clinical community must involve the most comprehensive set of stakeholders possible, including the lay public. This book sets a framework for shared understanding and discussion across disciplines with an appeal to scientists and non-scientists alike. The authors urge all stakeholders to engage in active dialogue about the appropriate context for using CRISPR and other gene-editing technologies in humans. It provides policy analysis and recommendations for assuring the most inclusive, equitable, and ethically sound use of CRISPR in humans, exploring its positive potential to treat mental disorders and the potential to induce other cognitive enhancements.
