Description / Table of Contents: Although the search for oil and gas in Europe, particularly in the North Sea, has been very successful, it has become progressively more difficult and costly in recent years. The need for continuing exploration success in finding accumulations of hydrocarbons has created a climate which favours the use of modern scientific and technological methods and techniques. Amongst these is petroleum geochemistry. Applications of petroleum geochemistry (integrated with petroleum geology) in petroleum exploration has drastically changed in recent years from a post-mortem science to a widely accepted exploration predictive tool.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume contains papers presented at the Geological Society on March 25th and 26th 1981, plus three additional contributions by researchers who were unable to be present at the meeting. The meeting brought together earth scientists with interests in geomorphology, geochemistry, pedology, sedimentology and applied geology. The multidisciplinary approach to the study of residual deposits is reflected in the 25 chapters of this book, which are arranged in four main groups: Weathering processes (chapters 1-3); Kaolinites, laterites and bauxites (chapters 4-11); Red beds (chapters 12-14); Duricrusts: calcretes, silcretes and gypcretes (chapters 15-25). The last two chapters of the book deal with karst related fluorite-baryte deposits, and Cenozoic pedogenesis and landform develop- ment in south-east England. Description / Table of Contents: Plate tectonics has significantly broadened our view of the dynamics of continental evolution, involving both the processes currently active at the surface and those extending deep into the interior of the Earth. Seismic anisotropy provides some of the most diagnostic evidence for mapping past and present deformation of the entire crustmantle system. This volume contains papers presented originally at an international workshop at the Chateau of Trest in the Czech Republic in 1996. This workshop brought together geophysicists and geologists who work in the field of observational and theoretical seismology, mineral and rock physics, gravity studies and geodynamic modelling. Topics include large-scale anisotropy of the Earth's mantle, mantle heterogeneity vs. anisotropy 3-D velocity and density structures and inferences on mantle dynamics, mineral and rock physics studies, and mathematical aspects of complex wave propagation.

Description / Table of Contents: One of the largest uncertainties in determining the effect of CFC’s on stratospheric ozone has been the magnitude of the trends in the altitude region between 15 and 20 km. In the 1994 WMO-UNEP ozone assessment, SAGE was reported as giving trends up to -0± 8% per decade at northern mid-latitudes, while the ozonesonde stations gave a trend of -± 3% per decade. In 1996 the SPARC panel on Understanding Ozone Trends and the International Ozone Commission decided to collaborate, under the auspices of the World Climate Research Programme and the World Meteorological Organisation, on a study to carefully re-evaluate the ground-based and satellite data to resolve this discrepancy. The philosophy of the study was similar to that of the International Ozone Trends Panel of 1988 which addressed the total ozone measurements. The published literature was not simply reviewed, but a critical re-analysis and interpretation of the vertical profiles of ozone was performed. One of the principal aims of the report was to determine if there was sufficient confidence in the long-term measurement systems to use them for accurate determination of ozone trends in the stratosphere and troposphere. A major purpose of the study was to validate the quality of the data including quantification of the errors and to determine if there were any limitations in altitude or latitude. The report is divided into three main chapters. Chapter 1 contains a description of how the various instruments work, and how ozone concentrations are calculated from the raw measurement. Particular attention is paid to the true vertical resolution of each instrument’s measurement and to its long term calibration drift as well as to its precision and accuracy. Chapter 2 assesses how well the various measurements agree through a series of rigorous data comparisons. Traditional techniques based on zonal averages and on close matches in time and space are augmented by new techniques which classify the air mass according to its dynamic history. Chapter 3 discusses and uses the various methods available for calculating trends, as well as investigating how well the causes of the trends can be determined by statistical approaches.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume contains 18 papers from 8 countries dealing with different aspects of triggered and induced seismicity. In situ observations of the phenomenon include examples of seismicity due to reservoirs, hard-rock mines, coal mines, mine collapses, brine production caverns, fluid injections, and geothermal hot-dry-rock projects. High-frequency acoustic emission studies from laboratory experiments and hard-rock mines have also been reported. Besides providing case studies of previously unavailable observations of seismicity, the present volume contains investigations of the causes and source mechanism of seismic events, determination of source parameters, seismic hazard as related to the design of support systems for underground openings and procedures for closure of brine production caverns, and the use of seismic and non-destructive techniques in assessing rock damage, measuring dynamic elastic moduli and detecting discontinuities. This collection of papers provides an excellent indication of the state of the art, recent developments and outstanding challenges facing scientists and engineers in understanding the causes and alleviating the effects of induced seismicity.

The reported cases include seismicity due to hard-rock mines, coal mines, underground research facilities for nuclear waste disposal, water injections, reservoirs, acquifers and oil fields. This volume provides case studies of previously unavailable observations of this phenomenon, investigations of the cause and source mechanism of seismic events, studies of source location distributions, determinations of seismic source parameters, cases of the use of such parameters in assessing rockburst hazard in mines, and measurements of velocity an attenuation properties of rock masses. The present collection of papers provides an excellent indication of the current state of the art and new developments in this area of research.
