Description: New and lesser-known amphipods of hard substrates in the Delta area of the Netherlands (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Gammaridea) The distribution of 27 new and lesser-known amphipod species of sublittoral hard substrates in the Delta area in the southwest of The Netherlands is described. Data from literature on these species are scarce and/or not readily available. They are supplemented with results from recent investigations of mainly sublittoral hard substrates. Of the 22 marine species only nine occur offshore as well as inshore. The others seem to be restricted to inshore man-made coastline protections. This probably reflects the scarcity of hard substrates further offshore. Four invasive species were recorded in the brackish and freshwater part of the Delta area, two of them of pontocaspian origin.

Description: Distribution and ecology of the chironomid Glyptotendipes ospeli in the Netherlands (Diptera: Chironomidae) \nThis paper adresses the ecology, biology and distribution of the larvae of the chironomid Glyptotendipes ospeli Contreras-Lichtenberg, 1999. No information is available on the ecology and biology of the adults. Glyptotendipes ospeli was described in 1999 after larvae collected in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) had been reared to adults. There is only one record from outside the Netherlands: a larva collected in Pripyat River (Belarus). In the Netherlands, larvae of this species have so far been recorded on 36 localities. Locally it can be rather common. Most records originate from standing, medium-sized, shallow waters in cities, e.g. ponds in city parks. One quarter of the localities are more or less natural. A large proportion of the larvae was found on hard substrata like wooden sheetings of ponds, submerse natural wood and stones. On several occasions, moss animals (Bryozoa), most likely Plumatella species, were found here. Larvae of G. ospeli were seen in Plumatella colonies. Often there was much leaf litter on the bottom. The water in which the larvae were found is characterized by high conductivity, low levels of dissolved oxygen and a poor transparency. The saprobic valency and weight of the species were estimated at 2.55 and 3 respectively. It is possible that this species previously was overlooked and identified as G. pallens or G. glaucus.

Description: The ant Myrmica lobicornis new for the Netherlands (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) \nIn 2002 seven workers of Myrmica lobicornis were collected in the Ballo\xc3\xabrveld (province of Drenthe). It is the first record of this species in the Netherlands. During the finishing of this paper a female of Myrmica lobicornis was found in a pit fall from Bakkeveensterduinen (Friesland)(ac: 214 566, 18.iv-2-.v.2002)

Description: Otiorhynchus apenninus, a new weevil for the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) \nOtiorhynchus apenninus (= O. salicicola) is reported for the first time from the Netherlands. The species was collected in a garden at Hoofddorp (Noord-Holland), Rijswijk (Zuid-Holland) and in and around a garden at Heemstede (Noord-Holland). The species appeared to be present at the locality at Heemstede for several successive years, despite an attempt to eradicate it. We therefore conclude that O. apenninus must be considered as established in the Netherlands. Some data are presented on the European distribution and host plants of the species. Illustrations of the male and female genitalia are provided.

Description: The diggerwasp Passaloecus brevilabris new to the Dutch fauna (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) \nIn the summer of 2002 a new diggerwasp for the Netherlands was found by the author, north of Herkenbosch (province of Limburg) at the edge of a forest consisting mainly of pine Pinus sylvestris and oak Quercus robur. Females of Passaloecus brevilabris can be recognised by their truncated and fully haired clypeus in combination with a short labrum that lacks the small distal lobe which is present in most related species. The species is known from several European countries, ranging from Scandinavia to France, although only in small numbers.

Description: The pondskater Gerris lateralis in the Netherlands: wing polymorphism, identification, biology and distribution (Heteroptera: Gerridae) \nIn the Netherlands the pondskater Gerris lateralis is a rare species with a limited distribution. Moreover, a substantial number of records concern macropterous specimens, considered as migrants. Recent findings, however, indicate that the species is more common than suspected, mainly because of its hidden way of life in less accessible habitats such as swamps. The relatively young population discovered in the recently reclaimed polder Zuid-Flevoland showed a high frequency of the macropterous morph in comparison to the almost completely apterous populations on the \xe2\x80\x98old land\xe2\x80\x99. The current observations support the assumption that wing dimorphism in Gerris lateralis is genetically determined with dominancy of the apterous morph. The macropterous morph obviously is common enough to establish new populations.

Description: The genus Sphegina Meigen, 1822 in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) \nA survey of the genus Sphegina in the Netherlands is given. Some nomenclatural changes are indicated, which resulted in the following five species which are now known from the Netherlands: Sphegina clavata (Scopoli, 1763), Sphegina clunipes (Fall\xc3\xa9n, 1817), Sphegina elegans (Schummel, 1843), Sphegina sibirica Stackelberg, 1953 and Sphegina verecunda Collin, 1937. Some of the rarer species were confused with other species in the past or overlooked in the field. Several collections were re-examined and new records were gathered. This resulted in new distribution maps for the Dutch species and a description of the habitats.

Description: The springtail Lepidocyrtus paradoxus new to the Dutch fauna (Hexapoda: Collembola) \nLepidocyrtus paradoxus Uzel, 1890 is a central European springtail, which is recorded here as new to the Dutch fauna. The species was collected in high numbers on a site called the Sint Pietersberg (near Maastricht), a hill at the southern point of the province of Limburg. The location can be described as a meadow on calcareous soil with a short vegetation. Morphological characters that discriminate this species from other Lepidocyrtus-species in the Netherlands are illustrated. A description of the site, supported by photographs, is made and information on its occurrence in Europe is summarised. A list with accompanying species of Collembola caught on the same site is given.
