Beschreibung: Experience using ESRI Geodatabase allowed to centralize in one place the many spatial, geological and seismological data contained in the databases produced in recent years by INGV and other institutions. Inspired by the USGS reports made to characterize the most important earthquakes, it was thought to create synthesis and quick reference tools of this information in relation to a seismic event that occurred on Italian territory. The result is the idea of "framing" the location of an earthquake not only in its territorial context, but extending it to other useful information derived from INGV databases and studies. The aim of GEOSIS Earthquake Report is precisely to frame a seismic event in 5 topics into a A3 cartography report: territorial framework, seismic classification, seismic hazards, historical seismicity, recent seismic activity. The utility of Earthquake Report has been highlighted especially during a seismic emergency as a tool for quick summary and easy to read of the different seismological and seismotectonic characteristics of the area affected by the earthquake. Just at those situations, however, has been pointed out the weak point of this report: their static nature. In fact it is coming out of the need to have an application that could dynamically be updated during a seismic sequence and which provides the user the ability to create custom scenarios. It was then developed GEOSIS web, the evolution of GEOSIS Earthquake Reports on the Web. GEOSIS web turns the cartography report into a webGIS application that allows users to create the 5 default views, or create different scenarios with the layers of geographic database. In addition GEOSIS web is not centered on a single seismic event but it has the opportunity to manage the last 20 events recorded by the National Seismic Network with magnitude (ML) greater than or equal to 2.0, updated in near real time.

Beschreibung: The MW 8.8 mega-thrust earthquake and tsunami that occurred on February 27, 2010, offshore Maule region, Chile, was not unexpected. A clearly identified seismic gap existed in an area where tectonic loading has been accumulating since the great 1835 earthquake experienced and described by Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. Here we jointly invert tsunami and geodetic data (InSAR, GPS, land-level changes), to derive a robust model for the co-seismic slip distribution and induced co-seismic stress changes, and compare them to past earthquakes and the pre-seismic locking distribution. We aim to assess if the Maule earthquake has filled the Darwin gap, decreasing the probability of a future shock . We find that the main slip patch is located to the north of the gap, overlapping the rupture zone of the MW 8.0 1928 earthquake, and that a secondary concentration of slip occurred to the south; the Darwin gap was only partially filled and a zone of high pre-seismic locking remains unbroken. This observation is not consistent with the assumption that distributions of seismic rupture might be correlated with pre-seismic locking, potentially allowing the anticipation of slip distributions in seismic gaps. Moreover, increased stress on this unbroken patch might have increased the probability of another major to great earthquake there in the near future.

Beschreibung: The individuation of areas that are more likely to be affected by new events in volcanic regions is of fundamental relevance for the mitigation of the possible consequences, both in terms of loss of human life and material properties. Here, we describe a methodology for defining flexible high-detail lava-hazard maps and a technique for the validation of the results obtained. The methodology relies on: (i) an accurate analysis of the past behavior of the volcano; (ii) a new version of the SCIARA model for lava-flow simulation (based on the macroscopic cellular automata paradigm); and (iii) high-performance parallel computing for increasing computational efficiency. The new release of the SCIARA model introduces a Bingham-like rheology as part of the minimization algorithm of the differences for the determination of outflows from a generic cell, and an improved approach to lava cooling. The method is here applied to Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe, and applications to landuse planning and hazard mitigation are presented.

Beschreibung: Improving lava flow hazard assessment is one of the most important and challenging fields of volcanology, and has an immediate and practical impact on society. Here, we present a methodology for the quantitative assessment of lava flow hazards based on a combination of field data, numerical simulations and probability analyses. With the extensive data available on historic eruptions of Mt. Etna, going back over 2000 years, it has been possible to construct two hazard maps, one for flank and the other for summit eruptions, allowing a quantitative analysis of the most likely future courses of lava flows. The effective use of hazard maps of Etna may help in minimizing the damage from volcanic eruptions through correct land use in densely urbanized area with a population of almost one million people. Although this study was conducted on Mt. Etna, the approach used is designed to be applicable to other volcanic areas.

Beschreibung: In this work we give information on the characteristics of the Italian National Seismic Network and on the seismicity and main seismic sequences in Italy during 2008. During that year the Italian National Seismic Network localized 6969 events in Italy and neighboring areas, with an apparent minimum magnitude of completeness ML of 2.1. The entire Italian Seismic Bulletin 2008 was obtained using signals from 279 stations belonging to the INGV Italian National Seismic Network and to other local and regional networks, all with real-time connection to the Centro Nazionale Terremoti in Rome. Some evidences confirm the presence of a certain percentage of events due to anthropic activity (explosions), erroneously interpreted as earthquakes of lowmagnitude. We identify 14 areas with the presence of explosions due to surfacemining activity, generating events with ML not exceeding 2.2.
