    Description: The distribution of (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Co and Cd) concentrations were determined in surface marine sediments and coral reefs at Wadi El-Gemal in the Red Sea area. There were significant differences in concentrations of heavy metals in the marine sediments relative to the coral reefs. Some heavy metal concentrations in sediments and coral reefs in the study area are high compared to that in the impact areas of the Egyptian Red Sea coast. The results indicate that the high concentrations of heavy metals in marine sediments and coral reefs are particularly affected by the high contribution of terrigenous materials through the stream of Wadi El-Gemal. Generally, heavy metals concentration in the sediments decreased with increasing distance from the shoreline with the exception of Pb, which increased with increasing distance from the shoreline. On the other hand, Pb concentration in coral reefs is high compared to that in some sediment samples at Wadi El- Gemal area. The grain size, carbonate, organic matter, phosphorus and heavy metals distribution reflect marked changes in lithology, biological activities in the sea and land geology of the study area. Carbonate content mainly of biogenic origin varies from 5.7 –69.5% of the sediments. Organic matter contents of the sediments (1.7 to 6.5%) and phosphorus content (110 to 5097ppm) usually reflect significant terrigenous influences. On the other hand, heavy metals show an increasing tendency in the mud fraction of Wadi El-Gemal area. The present work reflects how much the marine sediments and coral reefs are influenced by natural impacts from this wadi. The collected data will be useful in management and suitable development of the area, beside being helpful as database in the future.

    Description: Spatial and temporal variability in the saprophytic (SB) and salt tolerant saprophytic (STSB) bacterial counts as well as total coliforms (TC), E. coli (EC) and fecal streptococci (FS) were investigated in the Egyptian surface coastal waters of Aqaba and Suez Gulfs as well as Red Sea. A total of 200 samples collected from 40 sites during January, March, May, July and September 2002 were investigated. Hydrographical parameters including water temperature (oC), salinity (S%o), dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH were also measured. According to the European and Egyptian current standards, out of 200 samples analyzed during 2002, 183 samples (91.5%) were accepted for marine recreational purposes. The obtained results indicated that water quality of the investigated coastal areas was generally affected by sewage disposal and (or) other anthropic influences. However in bathing and recreational areas, the water quality was mainly affected by the excessive human presence i.e. tourists-visitors and their recreational activities. In general, the final counts of all the investigated bacterial groups were found to be in good correlation with each other.

    Description: Scales reading and length frequency distribution were used for age determination and growth estimation of Boops boops (Bogue) stock of Western Mediterranean Coast of Egypt. Age determination using scale was done and the time of annulus formation was detected by the marginal increment index. Bhattacharya’s method was used for length frequency analysis. Both methods showed 6 age groups. ANOVA test revealed insignificant differences between both estimates of length at age results. Growth parameters estimated using length-at-age data from both methods confirming the age determination results. Growth performance index indicated high similarity between the two estimates. The results revealed the compatibility of length frequency distribution to scale reading for stock assessment studies of bogue stock in Western Mediterranean Coast of Egypt.

    Description: The sediment samples that are collected during R/V CHAIN 1975 cruise to the southeastern Mediterranean have been used to determine the major controls of metals’distribution. The sediment samples were analysed mineralogically, chemically and texturally. The parameters measured included carbonate minerals, total carbonate, organic carbon, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, chromium, lead, nickel, cobalt, vanadium, calcium, magnesium, strontium, sand, silt and clay. The statistical analysis of data showed that four major factors control the distribution of metals in sediments of the Nile cone; These are: Factor 1 terrigenous mud-calcareous sand; Factor 2 Aragonite mud-terrigenous sand; Factor 3 Algal sand; and Factor 4 Aragonite. The percentages of terrigenous sand, mud and calcareous components of the Nile cone sediments greatly affect the elements spatial distribution. In addition to that, minor controls such as precipitation and coprecipitation may affect the elemental distribution. The distributions of iron, manganese, copper, zinc, chromium, lead, nickel, cobalt, and vanadium are associated mainly with the terrigenous mud fraction of the sediment whereas, calcium and strontium are mainly related to calcareous sands. Iron, copper, cobalt, lead and vanadium are partially related to montmorillonite. Lead is associated with acid feldspars and chromium is mainly controlled by terrigenous sand. The distribution of calcium and strontium is controlled by the coarsecalcareous fraction of sediments. Magnesium and manganese are associate with algal sand. The aragonite and calcite minerals are forming the majority of carbonate mud, which controls partially the distribution of calcium, strontium, lead and copper.

    Description: The present study deals with the physical and chemical characteristics of the water of Abu Za'baal Ponds. Determination of physical parameters (air and water temperatures, transparency, electrical conductivity, salinity, total solids, total dissolved solids and total suspended solids) and chemical parameters (pH, DO, BOD, COD, HCO3 -, CO3 --, Cl- , SO4 --,Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, NO2-, NO3-, NH3, PO4--, TP and SiO2-) were carried out to identify the nature and quality of the water of Abu Za'baal Ponds. The present results reveal that the values of most physical and chemical parameters were higher than those of freshwater, lower than those of saline water and in the same range of the brackishwater. Thus, the water of Abu Za'baal Ponds can be classified as brackishwater.

    Description: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the real contaminants of petroleum, were detected in the surface seawater of Alexandria coastal area in winter and spring seasons of 1995. Their order of predominance, particularly for the individual components were principally due to the processes of input, transport and fluxes. Variation of PAHs was not following seasonal changes but it was slightly affected by partial dissolution of the lowerboiling aromatic hydrocarbons. The most abundant component of aromatic hydrocarbons was pyrene (PAH),112ngI-1 followed by naphthalene(56ngI-1) and its alkylated derivatives (dicyclic), then phenanthrene(14ngI-1) and its methylated derivatives (tricyclic). The potential fish carcinogenic PAH, dibenz [a & c] anthracene was found in extremely trace levels. Most aromatic hydrocarbons present in seawater were arised from combustion of various petroleum and non-petroleum products, while few aromatics were found as a result of petroleum pollution. PAHs were also detected in rain water(25ngI-1). Plasticiser mate rials (phthalates) were determined everywhere at considerable levels in the coastal area of Alexandria; which is the first district in Egypt for producing and recycling polyethylene, plastics and nylons.

    Description: The giant clam (Tridacna maxima) and sediments have been collected from clean and contaminated coastal sites of the Egyptian Red Sea. Selected samples of the giant clam shells and the associated surface sediments were analyzed for Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni and Cd. Significant spatial differences in metal concentrations in Tridacna maxima and sediments were identified. Copper and lead are greatly enriched in the giant clam shells, which is related to their physiological function. Cd content is higher in Tridacna maxima than in sediments, because of the easy substitution between Cd and Ca. The levels of most metals in the giant clam shells and sediments were higher in the anthropogenic sites than in the uncontaminated sites. Generally, metal variations reflect natural conditions and human activity. Moreover, there are no clear relationships between concentrations of heavy metals in the giant clam shells and those in sediments.

    Description: Lake Manzalah; the largest delta Lake in Egypt represents a dynamic system that has been undergoing continuous and pronounced changes since long times. In the last year’s this Lake faced drastic problems that retarded its environmental and fisheries development; the most serious one is the discharge of waste water. It is attempted in the present study to investigate the chemical characters of Lake Manzalah water during 2001-2002. Water temperature ranged from an average of 12.35oC in January and 29.14oC in July. Dissolved Oxygen, pH and total dissolved solids were found in ranges optimum for the living of marine and freshwater fish species. The average concentrations of nutrients lied in the following ranges: 1.24 to 4.89 μmol PO4 -3 l-1 , 5.08 to 28.73 μmol SiO4 -2 l-1 and 1.81 to 17.7 μ_mol NO3-1 l-1 The concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds were found to be relatively higher at the southern regions of the Lake near to the outlets of the drains.

    Description: The results obtained from the erpretation of the V.E.S.’s gave information regarding the geological situation in the Nuweiba Harbour, Gulf of Aqaba south Sinai, Egypt. A total of 20 vertical electrical soundings (V.E.S.’s) were conducted along 6 profiles. The geoelectrical field emphasis some knowledge about structural geology and lithology of the subsurface formations of the study area. In this work, the Schlumberger array with maximum current electrode half spacing (AB/2) of 75 m was applied. This spacing is sufficient to reach adequate depths for this study. The established geoelectric sections reveal the presence of the following geoelectric units: (a) A superficial unit characterized by electric resistivity value ranging from 2.47 to 106 ohm-m., and with a thickness ranges from 0.7 to 9.7 m. (b) A second unit with electric resistivity values (0.82 - 24 ohm-m.) and of depths from 0.35 to 5.8 m. (c) A third unit characterized by electric resistivity values ranging from 0.7 and 6.5 ohm-m. This third unit has a maximum thickness of 22m. which disappears at some localities. (d) A basal unit characterized by lower electric resistivity values that ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 ohm-m. Location for cathodic protection necessary for construction of civil engineering harbour project is determined by the lowest values of resistivity values.

    Description: This study which was carried out at the different stations and sectors of Lake Burullus during the period from January till December 2000 showed that the identified species of phytoplankton community in Lake Burullus during the period of study included the classes of Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Euglenophyceae and Dinophyceae. The total number of species recorded during this period was 65 species. The standing crop and primary production of phytoplankton showed pronounced variations at different stations and months correlated with physicochemical conditions of water especially phosphate , nitrate and silicate contents. Stations 6,10 and 15 were the most productive in the eastern sector ,the middle sector, and the western sector respectively. The productivity was lower at stations nearby the drains mouth. Positive correlation was observed between the transparency and the net production. Levels of temperature and dissolved oxygen are among the factors affecting the productivity. In general, the dominance of Bacillariophyceae in the lake plays an important role in productivity, where it represented more than 65 % to the total count of phytoplankton during the period of study. The results obtained indicated that, Lake Burullus harboured lower phytoplankton standing crop and primary production as compared with that previously recorded .

    Description: El-Max fish farm is one of the most important natural fish farm in Alexandria which is suffering from die-off of large amounts of fish. Facing this problem we must deal with the estimation of the quality of the farm raring unit environment (ponds). Analysis of samples using the Bray - Curtis similarity coefficient test yielded that, the input and El-Khandac were similar at (97%), while the eight ponds were classified at different level of similarity as follows: pond1 (B1) and pond7 (B7) were similar at (86%), B2 and B3 were similar at (90%), B14, B10 and B9 were similar at (93%), where as B11 is singly separated at (83%). Moreover, results indicate that distribution of the different bacterial groups was affected with one or more chemical parameters such as ammonia, nitrates, phosphates and alkalinity. Since the similarity between ponds was high, we can consider them all as a unique environment from the physicochemical and microbiological point of view.

    Description: The effect of metrifonate on the immunity of the exposed fish are evaluated through the determination of the antibody titer and mortality rate during the challenge trial. In the chronic toxic exposure to metrifonate by dose 0.17mg/liter for 8 weeks, the more clear signs were darkness of fish color with hemorrhagic patches & loosing of scale at end of the trial the color return to normal. Determination of some blood parameters revealed significant decrease of white blood cell count, as there were lymphopenia and nueutrophilia during the chronic exposure to metrifonate. Phagocytic assay revealed a significant decrease in both phagocytic activity (PA) and phagocytic index(PI).Hypoproteinami hypoglobulinaemia and hypoalbuminaemia were observed. The challenge trial indicted that, the metrifonate decrease the immunity of exposed fish.. The using of biogen“R” as a growth promoter in fish diet minimized the toxicity of metrifonate.

    Description: Over the past four decades, the combination of in situ and remote sensing observations has demonstrated that long nonlinear internal solitary-like waves are ubiquitous features of coastal oceans. The following provides an overview of the properties of steady internal solitary waves and the transient processes of wave generation and evolution, primarily from the point of view of weakly nonlinear theory, of which the Korteweg-de Vries equation is the most frequently used example. However, the oceanographically important processes of wave instability and breaking, generally inaccessible with these models, are also discussed. Furthermore, observations often show strongly nonlinear waves whose properties can only be explained with fully nonlinear models.
