Description: The study examines energy security in the Central Asia region, with an emphasis on the natural gas sector. The research presented in the book attempts to answer the question of whether the various state actors in Central Asia are more inclined towards a strategic or market-oriented approach to energy policy formulation. Answering this research question aimed at better understanding the approach of individual state actors towards large infrastructure projects such as the construction of the Central Asia–China Gas Pipeline. Based on the theoretical literature, a model was constructed to assess the natural gas sector in terms of energy policy formulation by individual state actors. This model was then applied to three case studies of key state actors within the Central Asian regional energy security complex. These are the case studies of Russia, China, and Turkmenistan.

Description: This study by Szary-Matywiecka presents Malvína, or the Heart’s Intuition by Maria Wirtemberska, the first Polish psychological novel, as a work worth of critical attention. Despite its didactic message about the superiority of the heart over the mind, the work met with early success. The study deals with several aspects of the novel, while making use of methods developed by structuralists and formalists, including Michał Głowiński’s concept of formal mimesis. At the same time, it relies on current theories on language and proves that Malvína is not merely a sentimental book. The novel makes use of the traditional motif of twins separated at birth who finally meet many years later, and captures a picture of society of that time in Warsaw. The plot is permeated by the theme of doubling, two main male characters, double literary energy, and the double self of Wirtemberska as both the narrator and author.

Description: The technique known as contemporary stylometry uses different methods, including machine learning, to discover a poem’s author based on features like the frequencies of words and character n-grams. However, there is one potential textual fingerprint stylometry tends to ignore: versification, or the very making of language into verse. Using poetic texts in three different languages (Czech, German, and Spanish), Petr Plecháč asks whether versification features like rhythm patterns and types of rhyme can help determine authorship. He then tests its findings on two unsolved literary mysteries. In the first, Plecháč distinguishes the parts of the Elizabethan verse play The Two Noble Kinsmen written by William Shakespeare from those written by his coauthor, John Fletcher. In the second, he seeks to solve a case of suspected forgery: how authentic was a group of poems first published as the work of the nineteenth-century Russian author Gavriil Stepanovich Batenkov? This book of poetic investigation should appeal to literary sleuths the world over.

Description: The book Migration and Identity in Nordic Literature focuses on migration as it has manifested itself in literature and culture in the nineteenth, twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. Since migration almost always leads to a disturbance of identity and creates a potential for conflicts between individuals, as well as between groups of people, the authors have chosen to examine the theme of migration in relation to the questions of identity, both national and individual. The present monograph therefore concentrates on such cases of disturbance, disruption and hybridization of identity, as they are represented in literary works linked to the European North. The book will be of interest to all readers who are interested in issues such as xenophobia, racism, nationalism, cosmopolitism, globalization, cultural transfer, cultural hybridity, multiculturalism and multilingualism.

Description: Monografie romanisty Záviše Šumana je výsledkem jeho dlouhodobého studia raně novověké francouzské dramatické tvorby a dobové interpretace Aristotelovy Poetiky. Publikaci doplňuje informačně obsažný poznámkový aparát, rozsáhlá bibliografie, rejstřík a resumé v anglickém a francouzském jazyce.
