    The Netherlands and the Oil Crisis (2023)

    Description: The Netherlands played a remarkable role during the October War and the oil crisis of 1973. In secret, the Dutch government sent a substantial amount of ammunition and spare parts to Israel. The Dutch supported Israel also politically. Within the EC they vetoed a more pro-Arab policy. The Arab oil producing countries punished The Netherlands by imposing an oil embargo. The embargo against the Netherlands was intimidating. The Netherlands was dependent on Arab oil. The embargo seemed to threaten the Dutch position in the international oil sector. The government introduced several measures to reduce oil consumption. However, within two months it became clear that oil continued to arrive in Rotterdam. There was in fact no oil shortage in the Netherlands. The Netherlands even profited from the oil crisis. The energy situation in The Netherlands was much better than in other West European countries. The Dutch, therefore, rejected French plans for a more interventionist energy policy. Atlanticism and liberalism were the key words of the Dutch policy during the oil crisis. This book is the result of intensive research in all relevant Dutch archives. The authors had free access to all the files they wanted to see. They also used resources from other countries involved. Many politicians were interviewed.     Description: A Continent Moving West? argues that the conceptualization of migration as a one-way or long-term process is becoming increasingly wide of the mark. Rather, east-west labor migration in Europe, in common perhaps with other flows in and from other parts of the world, is diverse, fluid, and influenced by the dynamics of local and sector-specific labor markets and migration-related political regulations. The papers in this book contribute to critical understanding of the east-west migration within the European Union after the 2004 enlargement, from the new to the old member states.

    Description: Does the fact that the majority of Turkey's population is Muslim form a hindrance to its EU membership? According to a recent policy advice by the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), the answer is an adamant 'no'. Why is this issue of Turkish Islam relevant? After all, Turkey should not be judged by standards other than the Copenhagen criteria. The answer is that the public debate outside 'Brussels' will not be limited to these official criteria. Many people in Europe are worried about Turkey's 'Islam factor'. They believe that Muslims are (potentially violent) fundamentalists who want to establish a theocracy. By explicitly examining the role of Turkish Islam and Muslims in Turkey, the WRR wants to contribute to a well-informed European public debate on Turkey's accession.     Description: Ever since the dramatic events of September 11, 2001 the fundamentalist and exclusivist trend prevails in most presentations of Islamic thinking. Indeed, these events have given extremists and fundamentalists a much more prominent position than they might ever have dreamt of. In Reformation of Islamic Thought, the prominent Egyptian scholar Nasr Abû Zayd examines the positive, liberal, and inclusive reaction embedded in the writings of Muslim thinkers. He takes the reader on a critical journey across the Muslim World, where Muslim thinkers from Egypt and Iran to Indonesia seek to divest Islam of traditionalistic and legalistic interpretation. Instead, these thinkers stress the value of a cultural, enlightened Islam, and an individualistic faith. For many, the dogmatic Islam established by the conservatives and supported by totalitarian political regimes is outdated; they want it replaced by a spiritual and ethical Islam. To what extent are these reformist thinkers engaged in a genuine renewal of Islamic thought? Do they succeed in escaping the traditionalist trap of presenting a purely negative image of the West?     Description: Traditionally, the Netherlands has enjoyed being a test market for many ideas in the media. But over the last decade, progress has been severely hampered by lengthy discussions on the future structure of just one sector of media, namely public broadcasting via radio and television. The narrow approach results in a lot of paper, speeches and theories, but little in the way of definitive policy making. In a report to the government, published in February 2005, the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) argued for very different approaches to policy making. The recommendations are not only much broader than "broadcasting"; they tackle the challenges of making robust policy from new angles. Instead of trying to repair the old compass, the approach has been to find new instruments to help policymakers navigate the stormy and often confusing waters ahead. Perhaps the problem in the Netherlands is not accepting the new media, but rather accepting that the role "old" media has undergone a paradigm shift.     Description: The Netherlands and Belgium exemplified the pathology of 'welfare without work' that characterized continental welfare states - until a political crisis in both countries produced a surprising divergence in scope and extent of policy change in the early 1990s. In Belgium, government announced major reforms but its social security arrangements proved remarkably resilient. In the Netherlands, policy makers announced and implemented unprecedented cutbacks and a major overhaul of the disability benefit administration and supervision.     Description: Development aid has become the subject of much discussion. Why do we give aid, and does it help? What do we know about the development paths being taken by various countries, or the possibilities of helping them to achieve their goals from outside? How relevant is development aid now that remittances and foreign direct investments have increased as a result of globalization? When does aid have more negative than positive effects? What is the significance of shifting power relations in the world? And do policies focusing on issues like climate, migration, financial stability, knowledge, trade and security not have a greater impact than aid on the development opportunities of poor countries? These questions inspired the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy (wrr) to examine what form development aid should take in the era of globalization. At the start of 2010, on the basis of over 500 interviews with experts and an extensive literature survey, the wrr presented its far-reaching recommendations. In October 2010, the new Dutch government decided to use the report as the basis of a thorough modernization of its development policy. This book is based on the wrr report. It builds on the many responses to the report, resulting in more elaboration on specific lines of reasoning, coverage of new themes and more comprehensive analyses, without changing the core of the original report. Ban Chiang and the Politics of Heritage in Thailand contributes to the literature on cultural preservation, repatriation, fake antiquities as souvenirs, and the ethics of collecting and demonstrates how heritage tourism intersects with the antiquities market in Asia.     Description: Peace operations became the core focus of many Western armed forces after the Cold War. The wish amongst political and military leaders during the 1990s to hold on to the classical identity of the armed forces as an instrument of force made them pursue a strict separation between military operations and the civilian aspects of peacekeeping, such as policing, administrative functions, and political and societal reconstruction. In his book Soldiers and Civil Power, Thijs Brocades Zaalberg argues that this policy failed to match up to reality. Supporting civil authorities, and at times even substituting them (de facto military governance), became the key to reaching any level of success in Cambodia, Somalia, Bosnia and Kosovo. As a result of the false segregation between the civilian and the military domain, this was accomplished mostly by improvisation and creativity of commanders who probed for the limiting boundaries of their original mandate by reaching ever further into the civilian sphere.     Description: Is the end of the nation-state approaching, now that the international economy takes less and less notice of borders between countries and the European Union has already acquired so much political power? What does national autonomy mean when governments delegate any number of powers to international organizations? Internationalization leads to political change, and the position of the nation-state appears to be undergoing a radical process of erosion. The surprising conclusion of this book is that the political significance of the state will not be lost. The analyses show that both expansion and fragmentation of political power are characteristics of fundamental political change. While it is true that the state is delegating authority and that internationalization is limiting autonomy, the state is also finding new forms of cooperation and coordination, both nationally and internationally, to preserve and even to strengthen its power and autonomy.     Description: The uprising which shook France in May 1968 also had a revolutionary effect on the country's most prominent film journal. Under editors Jean-Louis Comolli and Jean Narboni, Cahiers du cinéma embarked on a militant turn that would govern the journal's work over the next five years. With a Marxist orientation inspired by the thinking of Louis Althusser, Jacques Lacan and Roland Barthes, the "red years" of Cahiers du cinéma produced a theoretical outpouring that was formative for the establishment of film studies as an academic discipline in the 1970s, and is still of vital relevance for the contemporary audiovisual landscape. It was also the seminal experience for a generation of critics who have dedicated the following half-century to the task of critically responding to the cinema. The Red Years of Cahiers du Cinéma (1968-1973) gives a historical overview of this period in the journal's history, combining biographical accounts of the critics who were involved with Cahiers in the post-1968 and theoretical explorations of the text they wrote.

The author demonstrates that, in spite of strong policy pressures, the Dutch system remains a formal care model and represents a case of institutional and social resistance to welfare restructuring By contrast, the Italian system has shifted from family-based to a mix of family- and market-based model, despite the absence of substantial policy intervention.     Description: A social revolution has taken place in Europe. Women's employment patterns changed drastically the last decades. But they are still different across Europe. Welfare state scholars often presume that diversity and change in women's employment across Europe is based on financial (dis) incentive structures embedded in welfare states. This book shows, by in depth analyses of women's (and men's) employment and care patterns as well as child care services, taxation, leave schemes and social security in four different welfare states (the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium) that this logic does not hold. A mother is not primarily the homo economicus welfare state scholars tend to presume. 'to work or to care 'is above all a moral predicament. What explains better the differences in Europe is to place care centrally and analyse welfare states as cultural agents. In the case of caring and paid employment, welfare states send culturally-defined moral images of good-enough caring in the form of ideals of care. An ideal of care implies a definition of what is good care and who gives it. These ideals of care are embedded in welfare states and their regulations, laws and implementation processes. Each welfare state promotes specific ideals of care. Cultural explanations downplay the role of the state too much. Culture, as is shown, is located within rather than outside the welfare state. The welfare state is not only a notary drawing contracts between the state and citizens or a merchant connecting supply and demand, but also a priest. This book shows, by studying care policy in welfare states, that social policy has an impact on women's and men's division of labour and care. The Netherlands, as a 'pocket-sized medium power', is an interesting case study. While the margins for Dutch foreign policy are limited, fate had it that the Netherlands occupied the European presidency during the second half of 1991, when the recognition issue divided the West and the parameters for the subsequent international intervention in the Balkans were set. By July 1995, the involvement of the Netherlands had deepened to the extent that Dutch troops who found themselves trapped in the UN safe area of Srebrenica together with the local Muslim population were unable to prevent the worst massacre in Europe since the Second World War.     Description: This collection of essays is about tourism and social, political, and economic relations in coastal locations in various parts of the world. The starting point of each chapter is the ethnographic study of one particular place. However, the authors are also concerned with wider regional, national, and global forces which shape and influence the local economies and societies under review. Although most of the essays focus on the European coastline, the book is intended to have implications for other geographical areas. In most parts of the world, coastal settlements and contexts are changing rapidly and markedly. These contexts are routinely characterised by conflict between different interest groups contesting the ownership and control of the foreshore and its resources. One of the threads running through the volume is that coastal regions are often sites of fishing and related 'traditional' activities. The chapters discuss the relationships between traditional stakeholders, such as fishermen and local residents, and new stakeholders including new residents, second-home owners, tourists and tourism property developers, and fish farm managers as they vie for status, influence, and ultimately for space on the foreshore. The underlying preoccupation of the volume as a whole is the extent of penetration and transformation resulting from the onward march of capitalism and the market system in the coastal locations studied.     Description: This book focuses on the so-called 'new bilateralism' phenomenon, a foreign policy development that has widespread across regions since the mid-1990s. The book asks why the policy trend of 'new bilateralism' has been pursued in spite of the widely accepted views on political and economic advantages of 'multilateralism'. It also invites an open theoretical discussion on the implications of new bilateralism for international relations. Using the case study of EU-Thailand relations, the book shows that the opportunistic foreign policy behavior of the state is particularly observable in the crisis of multilateralism and that the prospects of bilateral engagement, identity formation and rhetorical action urge the drive to bilateralism with a high degree of pragmatism. This book offers important insight into how the new bilateralism operates, showing its advantages and disadvantages in the developing relationship between the EU and Thailand.

    Description: How did the breakdown of Roman rule in the Iberian Peninsula eventually result in the formation of a Visigothic kingdom with authority centralised in Toledo? This collection of essays challenges the view that local powers were straightforwardly subjugated to the expanding central power of the monarchy. Rather than interpret countervailing events as mere ‘delays’ in this inevitable process, the contributors to this book interrogate where these events came from, which causes can be uncovered and how much influence individual actors had in this process. What emerges is a story of contested interests seeking cooperation through institutions and social practices that were flexible enough to stabilise a system that was hierarchical yet mutually beneficial for multiple social groups. By examining the Visigothic settlement, the interplay between central and local power, the use of ethnic identity, projections of authority, and the role of the Church, this book articulates a model for understanding the formation of a large and important early medieval kingdom.

O presente livro é exemplo de como um estudo intensivo de um número de casos relativamente pequeno, pode bem ser mais revelador do que estudos que, sendo mais abrangentes em termos numéricos, estão dependentes de modelos de interpretação menos intensivos. A elite que Maria Antónia Pedroso de Lima caracteriza corresponde ao contexto social de maior acumulação de riqueza a nível nacional português e até a nível internacional. Contudo, não poderíamos afirmar que se trata da elite portuguesa, já que a vida política e cultural portuguesa contemporânea é controlada por outros sectores sociais cuja radicação social nas classes medias profissionais é bem distinta da destas famílias empresariais. O relativo distanciamento destas famílias dos meios políticos e mediáticos nacionais posiciona-as numa espécie de marginalidade superior por relação aos contextos hegemónicos dominantes na sociedade portuguesa contemporânea.     Description: Em Memória Social em Campo Maior procurou-se, antes de mais, perceber e discutir algumas das especificidades decorrentes da localização fronteiriça da vila estudada, nomeadamente as que são reflectidas na produção e reprodução daquilo a que podemos chamar memória social. Em articulação com as categorias de espaço e de tempo, a memória social, entendida enquanto representação partilhada do passado e configuração do presente, constituiu-se, portanto, como o foco analítico principal que estruturou o trabalho. Na persecução dos objectivos definidos, foram configurados dois eixos de análise fundamentais. Por um lado a própria fronteira como objecto de inquirção, ou seja, como factor que singularizou a comunidade, quer quando funcionou como recurso, quer quando potenciou o conflito. Por outro lado, a memória social como elemento articulador de diferentes temporalidades e experiências de vida, ou seja, como recurso narrativo capaz de estruturar vivencias e dar-lhes sentido.

Um Estudo de Antropologia Social procura interrogar um dos mais complexos e sedutores rituais que integram o calendário cerimonial em Portugal. Desenvolvendo-se a partir da observação intensiva dos Impérios numa freguesia da ilha de Santa Maria, o estudo percorre depois, numa perspectiva comparativa, outras ilhas açorianas. Com base no relevo que tem nas Festas do Espírito Santo um conjunto muito diversificado de dádivas e contra-dádivas de alimentos cerimoniais, o autor propõe uma interpretação do ritual assente na consideração simultânea da sua dimensão religiosa, da sua relação com os principais círculos de relacionamento social e do vínculo que ele exibe com as formas de conceptualização do tempo nas comunidades estudadas. Aspectos controversos como a procura de prestígio individual através das despesas requeridas pelos festejos ou as relações entre povo e clero em torno do ritual são também examinados. Pela natureza dos problemas discutidos, As Festas do Espírito Santo nos Açores constitui não apenas uma contribuição para uma Antropologia Social do arquipélago, mas uma oportunidade para o reexame de alguns dossiers mais genéricos relacionados com o estudo antropológico das comunidades rurais em domínio europeu.

    Famílias no campo : Passado e presente em duas freguesias do Baixo Minho (2021)

    Description: É uma paisagem verde, de luminosidade variável mas intensa, salpicada de casas e fábricas, onde se desenham montes de baixo relevo, pequenas bouças de pinheiros, campos em rectângulo e uma variedade mal organizada de caminhos, atalhos e estradas. O que mais impressiona hoje no Baixo Minho é o movimento constante, de pessoas e veículos, dos que se deslocam dez, vinte ou trinta quilómetros para ir e vir do emprego, da escola ou da praia ao domingo. Os que trabalham no campo, esses, cruzam-se mais devagar no espaço da própria aldeia, a pé ou de tractor, e quase sempre sozinhos ou em grupos de dois ou três. Aí, ao contrário da paisagem verde e húmida, a mudança social é bem visível: no campo onde, há cinquenta anos, um lavrador dirigia um colectivo de trabalhadores, composto pelos seus familiares, criados e jornaleiros, encontra-se agora um agricultor solitário montado no tractor. Nas casas também se encontram continuidades e rupturas. As novas, de janelas e jardim virados para a estrada, abrigam famílias de operários fabris, empregados, pequenos empresários ou, ainda, agricultores que preferem construir uma casa nova e abandonar a antiga, a casa de lavoura granítica e resguardada do olhar público pelos muros envolventes.

Perspectivando a etnologia como uma disciplina preferencialmente vocacionada para o terreno português - "qual poderá (…) ser o estudo mais digno de um povo senão o estudo de si próprio" enfatizará ele num texto de 1896 - Adolfo Coelho afirma-se de facto, em premeiro lugar, como um dos mais destacados "cultores" da literatura e das tradições populares.

    Description: Esta edição revista contém, para além dos quatro capítulos originais, um ensaio suplementar, redigido em 2015. O primeiro capítulo, que serve de introdução ao volume, insiste no carácter contextual de qualquer análise da família e pretende demonstrar que o seu estudo comparativo tem sempre um carácter interdisciplinar. O segundo apresenta o conceito de regime demográfico e mostra como a dinâmica das populações antigas reflecte as funções demográficas da família e, por conseguinte, os factores socioeconómicos que lhe servem de enquadramento. Os dois capítulos seguintes, que analisam em profundidade duas variáveis chave de qualquer regime demográfico, constituem uma primeira aproximação, numa perspectiva malthusiana, à complexidade e especificidade do caso português. O terceiro identifica os padrões de nupcialidade observáveis em Portugal continental durante a segunda metade do século XIX. Para além de constituir uma contribuição original para a metodologia da demografia histórica, o ensaio constitui um ponto de partida para investigações mais aprofundadas e localizadas sobre a articulação interna dos regimes demográficos. O quarto, por sua vez, propõe-se analisar o sistema familiar português em meados do século XX, descrevendo a sua configuração regional com base numa reelaboração dos dados do Censo de 1960 e identificando os principais factores subjacentes à variação nas estruturas familiares: o grau de subordinação do tecido económico à lógica de mercado e a medida em que essa subordinação permite a estruturação das relações sociais e familiares em torno da lógica da casa. A principal novidade deste capítulo reside no facto de apresentar, pela primeira vez, um quadro pormenorizado e de conjunto do sistema familiar português e da sua evolução no tempo, abrindo caminho para investigações mais aprofundadas e localizadas sobre a estruturação do sistema familiar e sobre as suas relações com o contexto socioeconómico. O post-scriptum, por fim, retoma a temática central do livro, relacionando-a, quer com investigações mais recentes que a situam num âmbito comparativo euro-asiático, quer com a tradição malthusiana na qual se insere, e propõe uma nova e mais ampla formulação teórica do conceito de regime demográfico.

    Description: Durante a última ou as duas últimas décadas, tem havido tentativas significativas da parte da comunidade de estudiosos de ultrapassar as fronteiras entre as várias disciplinas, de partilhar metodologias e conhecimentos teóricos e de, ao mesmo tempo, pôr novas questões e criar vias de investigação inteiramente novas. Um dos intercâmbios mais frutuosos verificados deu-se entre as disciplinas de História e Antropologia (Kertzer 1984a). A um nível, o intercâmbio foi simultaneamente essencial e específico. Como Stone (1982) refere, os antropólogos têm feito perguntas acerca de estruturas de parentesco, regras de residência, perguntas que são de interesse vital para uma nova geração de historiadores da família e da sociedade. A formulação de certos princípios gerais acerca da «natureza do homem» ou da «natureza da vida social» com base num estudo intensivo da dinâmica da vida numa comunidade local tem uma tradição igualmente longa em antropologia. Em meios ligados à história, é um fenómeno mais recente. Aquilo a que Stone chama «história total» não é senão o que os antropólogos há muito designaram por «holismo».

    Description: O rio Lima corre em direcção ao poente, da província espanhola de Orense para a costa Atlântica, que encontra na cidade de Viana do Castelo, capital do distrito ao qual ambas as margens do rio pertencem. Na margem sul, estão situadas duas pequenas vilas, Ponte de Lima e Ponte da Barca, nomes que referem as pontes que atravessam o rio nos locais de encontro entre a estrada que o bordeja e as principais vias antigas que, no sentido sul-norte, ligam Braga (capital eclesiástica e económica do Minho) com o rio Minho, na fronteira mais setentrional do país. Paço de S. Miguel e Couto de S. Fins, cujos residentes são os protagonistas deste estudo, são duas freguesias ribeirinhas do pequeno concelho de Ponte da Barca, que se situa a cerca de quarenta quilómetros do mar.

    Description: Wealth and power characterize elites, yet despite the strong cultural influences they exert, their study remains underdeveloped. Partly because of complications resulting from access, scholars have tended to focus on groups affected by elite governance rather than on elites themselves. It is often overlooked that, in order to continue through time, elites have to empower new members. Choice has to be exercised over who achieves leadership, both by reference to the elite group itself and to the wider group over which it holds power. This book fills a gap in the current literature by providing the first rigorous interrogation of the choice and succession strategies of elites in various cultural contexts - from the transmission and preservation of financial power in urban contexts to the complex relation between subjectivity and the transmission of leadership positions in places as varied as the United States, Northern Italy and Lisbon. Various elite succession types are discussed, from self-avowedly 'traditional' leaders to the aristocracy, where choice is practically non-existent, to situations where leaders are elected from amongst a group of peers. The relationship between familial property and choice of successor in landholding families, small business enterprises, and peasant communities is also examined, as are ethnic monopolies.

Esses projectos de investigação centraram-se primeiro nas rotas que ligam historicamente Portugal a alguns países árabes e islâmicos, balizadas por práticas de cooperação patrimoniais contemporâneas (Marrocos, Mauritânia) e alargaram-se, depois, a outros países africanos (Senegal, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Moçambique) investindo na análise de memórias, nostalgias e outros recursos patrimoniais, e às implicações dos regimes do turismo que a estes, muitas vezes, estão associados.Os seus objectivos incluíam também a desmontagem da retórica subjacente aos programas de cooperação contemporâneos e sua lógica de monumentalização, a decomposição estratigráfica do seu acervo constituinte e o acompanhamento dos discursos e práticas identitárias locais paralelos. À escala local, aquela que acabou por se privilegiar, o objetivo foi o de entender a gestão quotidiana dos novos regimes do património e do turismo e o modo como ela é determinada por – e afeta – conformações culturais e normas e categorizações sociais locais prévias.

Organizado pela Câmara Municipal de Portel e pelo Centro de Tradições Populares Portuguesas (Universidade de Lisboa), tendo o professor Manuel Viegas Guerreiro assegurado a respectiva coordenação científica. A realização do evento traduz a congregação de esforços entre uma unidade científica e uma entidade autárquica para que durante as jornadas referidas se criasse um ambiente de estímulos mútuos. Durante as sessões do Colóquio de Portel foram debatidas questões relacionadas com a abordagem da oralidade no Sul de Portugal. Este tema tem um significado duplo. Se, por um lado, fornece matéria para a construção de memória, por outro, caracteriza realidades presentes. Distinguir estas questões implicou interrogar a noção de cultura popular. Ao fazê-lo, somos obrigados a desfazer dicotomias no nosso modo de pensar.

Para nossa surpresa, as primeiras respostas que obtivemos foram rotundamente negativas. Primeiro contacto: almoço com o Vitalha (na altura, para nós era ainda o Victor). Cerca de 30 anos. Vive em Alfama. Nasceu lá. Aparece bem vestido, fato completo, colete e gravata. E com aquele ar malicioso, desenrascado, espertalhão, que de boa vontade se associa ao personagem característico dos bairros populares de Lisboa. O ar «gingão» — dizia ele de si próprio, meses mais tarde, em animada conversa. O Vitalha está plenamente disposto a ajudar («embora tenha pouco tempo…»: é árbitro de futebol, tem os fins-de-semana sempre ocupados). Mostra a sua aprovação por termos escolhido o bairro de Alfama como centro de interesse para o nosso estudo. E surge de imediato o termo de comparação: o Bairro Alto. Esse já não seria bom porque… «Não tem nada!… A não ser aquilo que se sabe…» Ou seja, é «muito ordinário» para nós. O tema da forte identidade colectiva bairrista e da rivalidade com outros bairros lisboetas é uma constante que se nos foi deparando em Alfama. Ainda lhe faremos referência. Veja-se para já, a este respeito, o trabalho de João Catarino e Madalena Pereira sobre os Santos Populares em Alfama e as descrições das cenas de pancadaria das «púrrias» dos bairros alfacinhas em Alfama — Gente do Mar, de Eduardo de Noronha.

    Description: How and why do people become involved in European homegrown jihadism? This book addresses this question through an in-depth study of the Dutch Hofstadgroup, infamous for containing the murderer of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, who was killed in November 2004 in Amsterdam, and for plotting numerous other terrorist attacks. The Hofstadgroup offers a window into the broader phenomenon of homegrown jihadism that arose in Europe in 2004 and is still with us today. Utilizing interviews with former Hofstadgroup participants and the extensive police files on the group, Becoming a European Homegrown Jihadist overcomes the scarcity of high-quality data that has hampered the study of terrorism for decades. The book advances a multicausal and multilevel understanding of involvement in European homegrown jihadism that is critical of the currently prevalent 'radicalization'-based explanatory frameworks. It stresses that the factors that initiate involvement are separate from those that sustain it, which in turn are again likely to differ from those that bring some individuals to actual acts of terrorism. This is a key resource for scholars of terrorism and all those interested in understanding the pathways that can lead to involvement in European homegrown jihadism.

    Description: Através da análise do dia-a-dia das mulheres de um bairro popular numa cidade marroquina, pretende-se demonstrar como o Islão é constantemente reinterpretado e apropriado, juntamente com outros elementos culturais, na reconstrução de uma identidade feminina urdida em jogos sociais intensos - contrariando-se, assim, os habituais estereótipos da "mulher muçulmana reclusa". O argumento principal é o de que só através da observação dos contextos domésticos e informais, nos quais as mulheres tecem as suas relações sociais, é possível aceder as noções de pessoa, self e comunidade e compreender os processos pelos quais os papéis religiosos e de género são reinventados através de uma bricolage que recicla tradição e modernidade. Este argumento e sustentado etnograficamente por uma descrição do ritmo anual da vida doméstica e do bairro, bem como pelo acompanhamento de celebrações religiosas e nacionais. O levamento etnográfico estende-se dos ritos a outras performances comunicativas (como as matinées em torno da televisão e do vídeo), das muitas outras ocasiões e formas de sociabilidade (visitas, actividades quotidianas, pequenas trocas e empréstimos, participação e papéis dos parentes, amigos e vizinhos) a observância do equilíbrio delicado da decência, religiosidade e honra adequadas a cada momenta social e temporal. Este itinerário etnográfico pretende demonstrar coma as noções de pessoa e comunidade são estabilizadas e mantidas pela repetição quotidiana de gestos, cenas e fórmulas, ao mesmo tempo que os seus limites são constantemente actualizados em cada encontro com amigos, vizinhos, parentes ou antropólogos. Finalmente, argumenta-se que existem no Islão dispositivos compatíveis com a modernidade, no que respeita ao corpo e ao self entendidos coma projectos individuais e racionais, ao mesmo tempo que se demonstra coma o "regateamento da realidade", num contexto de pobreza e poupança simbólica, reinscreve as referências modernizadoras num idioma de mobilidade social. O recurso a comparações fora do contexto marroquino imediato permite situar este trabalho no âmbito mais alargado dos estudos interpretativos urbanos e sobre a globalização.

Esta veio transformar um sector que se manteve durante séculos maioritariamente assente na composição e impressão de texto a partir de caracteres móveis tridimensionais em chumbo: a tipografia. Todo um universo sóciotécnico foi então abalado. Nas oficinas a tipografia passou para segundo plano, ultrapassada pela infografia e impressão offset, aguardando o desmantelamento definitivo da tecnologia que fica para a história como a «mãe das artes gráficas». O olhar etnográfico, legado da antropologia social e cultural, levou a autora a lugares onde a tipografia e os tipógrafos se fizeram ouvir até à viragem do século xx para o xxi.

São raros os trabalhos sobre Intocáveis, castas consideradas "impuras" e, como tal, socialmente depreciadas. Decidiu por isso a autora realizar um trabalho de campo sobre os Vankar, casta Intocável de tecelões do Estado do Gujarat. Ao leitor é proporcionada uma apresentação fascinante do universo Vankar, através das suas práticas e rituais, dos seus deuses e demónios, dos seus mitos. Arigidez atribuída à hierarquia do sistema social indiano é relativizada. Defende a autora que existem inúmeras passagens, contactos e contaminações entre castas - em teoria rigorosamente separadas umas das outras. Em particular, é sugerido que, quando a ordem social e cósmica está ameaçada de ruptura, os últimos passam, num certo sentido, a ser os primeiros. Cabe então à casta mais desvalorizada (Intocável) assumir o poder de sustentar ou restabelecer a ordem vacilante. Em Reis e Intocáveis, Rosa Maria Perez confronta-nos com um caso exemplar. Na aldeia de Valthera, atingida pela grande seca de 1985-1988, os Vankar são solicitados por toda a população, e em primeiro lugar pelos Rajput (a casta dominante), a exercer o poder de trazer a chuva, atributo partilhado com o soberano hindu. Este é um dos primeiros estudos antropológicos realizado numa universidade portuguesa que incide sobre um espaço exterior ao do antigo império colonial.

Como refere Jorge Freitas Branco no esclarecedor prefácio que para esta edição escreveu, volvidos que são cem anos sobre a sua publicação, «não perdeu qualquer interesse relembrá-la pela reedição, rever nela as ideias oitocentistas com o distanciamento crítico do tempo percorrido, repensar a seu propósito o quadro de desenvolvimento de ramos do conhecimento científico em Portugal [...] e, finalmente, facilitar ao público o acesso a um texto cheio de pormenores dum quotidiano para muitos de nós ainda não completamente votado ao esquecimento». Dada a extensão da obra, manteve-se na presente reedição a divisão em dois volumes a que obedeceu a edição original de 1885.

Na prossecução desse objectivo, João Leal – professor de Antropologia do ISCTE – adoptou um enfoque disciplinar amplo, por forma a levar em conta um conjunto de discursos que, embora originários de campos como a arqueologia, a literatura ou a arquitectura, partilham com a etnografia o mesmo fascínio pelo popular como instância de fundamentação da identidade nacional. Para além do tratamento de temas como as teses lusitanistas, a saudade e as discussões sobre a psicologia étnica, a dialéctica entre nação e região, «Etnografias Portuguesas» propõe ainda uma abordagem detalhada das principais expressões de interesse pela arquitectura popular no decurso do século XX: da «casa portuguesa» aos trabalhos de Veiga de Oliveira e seus colaboradores, passando pelo «Inquérito à Habitação Rural» e pelo «Inquérito à Arquitectura Popular Portuguesa».
