    Description: Images of diamonds appear everywhere in American culture. And everyone who has a diamond has a story to tell about it. Our stories about diamonds not only reveal what we do with these tiny stones, but also suggest how we create value, meaning, and identity through our interactions with material culture in general. Things become meaningful through our interactions with them, but how do people go about making meaning? What can we learn from an ethnography about the production of identity, creation of kinship, and use of diamonds in understanding selves and social relationships? By what means do people positioned within a globalized political-economy and a compelling universe of advertising interact locally with these tiny polished rocks? This book draws on 12 months of fieldwork with diamond consumers in New York City as well as an analysis of the iconic De Beers campaign that promised romance, status, and glamour to anyone who bought a diamond to show that this thematic pool is just one resource among many that diamond owners draw upon to engage with their own stones. The volume highlights the important roles that memory, context, and circumstance also play in shaping how people interpret and then use objects in making personal worlds. It shows that besides operating as subjects in an ad-burdened universe, consumers are highly creative, idiosyncratic, and theatrical agents.

So stellt eine Totalüberwachung der Athleten ihre bürgerlichen Rechte in Frage, viele Maßnahmen sind ineffektiv und der Kampf gegen das Doping wird oft inkonsequent geführt. Die Beiträge des Bandes nehmen daher aus verschiedenen Perspektiven eine fundierte Kritik des Anti-Doping vor und zeigen, dass der Kampf gegen das Doping einer dringenden Revision auf vielen Ebenen bedarf. Die moralische Aufladung des Themas ist dabei genauso ein Problem wie die Methoden, Strategien und - nicht selten - die Personalien selbst.

    Description: The study of Roman urbanism – especially its early (Republican) phases – is extensively rooted in the evidence provided by a series of key sites, several of them located in Italy. Some of these Italian towns (e.g. Fregellae, Alba Fucens, Cosa) have received a great deal of scholarly attention in the past and they are routinely referenced as textbook examples, framing much of our understanding of the broad phenomenon of Roman urbanism. However, discussions of these sites tend to fall back on well-established interpretations, with relatively little or no awareness of more recent developments. This is remarkable, since our understanding of these sites has since evolved thanks to new archaeological fieldwork, often characterised by the pursuit of new questions and the application of new approaches. Similarly, new evidence from other sites has since prompted a reconsideration of time-honoured views about the nature, role and long-term trajectory of Roman towns in Italy. Tracing its origins in the Laurence Seminar on Roman Urbanism in Italy: recent discoveries and new directions, which took place at the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge (27–28 May 2022), this volume brings together scholars whose recent work at key sites is contributing to expand, change or challenge our current knowledge and understanding of Roman urbanism in Italy. The individual chapters showcase some of the most recent methods and approaches applied to the study of Roman towns, discussing the broader implications of fresh archaeological discoveries from both well known and less widely known sites, from the Po Plain to Southern Italy, from the Republican to the Late Antique period (and beyond).

    Description: This monograph deals with Polish foreign policy shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. In tracing the diplomatic activity of foreign minister Józef Beck, it discusses six general problems: (1) the Polish political situation under the pressure of appeasement; (2) the project of Intermarium and efforts to implement it; (3) the action against Czechoslovakia and the conflict with the Soviet Union; (4) the Polish attitude towards the German concept of Gesamtlosung in Germany’s relations with Poland; (5) the genesis of the Polish alliance with Great Britain; (6) the Allies’ military inaction after Nazi Germany’s aggression. In these conditions, Poland made four key decisions: it stood against Czechoslovakia, it rejected German demands, it allied itself with the United Kingdom, and it rejected the Soviet Union’s claim for the Red Army to march across Polish lands.

    Description: Since the 1970s, environmental issues have become a major concern for European citizens and thus for European politicians. In the same time frame the political sphere in Europe, and in particular within the European Union, has also been undergoing major transformations. Dealing with environmental issues over more than fifty years in a historical perspective enables us to gain a better understanding of these transformations, notably the emergence of a European public sphere and how this is changing decision-making processes. Drawing on recent research results from various disciplines, including history, sociology, law and political sciences, this volume addresses the methodological challenge of a European perspective on a transnational subject – one that is commonly distorted by a national prism. It shows how perceptions of the environment are increasingly converging and how these convergences of views across political or linguistic borders in the long run exert an undeniable influence not only on political debates but also on political decisions across Europe. Revealing European characteristics of perceptions, debates and policies, this volume contributes to a history of Europeanisation beyond the usual political turning points and limits.

Von den Anfängen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zur Gegenwart bettet Christian Reumschüssel-Wienert die Entwicklung der Psychiatrie in die sozioökonomische, politische und kulturelle Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik ein. Eine integrierte Sichtweise berücksichtigt sozialpsychiatrische Diskurse ebenso wie psychiatrie- und behindertenpolitische Aspekte in klinischen und außerklinischen Kontexten. Es zeigt sich, dass die Sozialpsychiatrie gesellschaftliche Modernisierungsschübe reflektiert und nachholend umsetzt.

    Description: The Lebanese are the largest group of Middle Eastern immigrants in the United States, and Lebanese immigrants are also prominent across Europe and the Americas. Based on over eighty interviews with first-generation Lebanese immigrants in the global cities of New York, Montreal and Paris, this book shows that the Lebanese diaspora – like all diasporas – constructs global relations connecting and transforming their new societies, previous homeland and world-wide communities. Taking Lebanese immigrants’ forms of identification, community attachments and cultural expression as manifestations of diaspora experiences, Dalia Abdelhady delves into the ways members of Lebanese diasporic communities move beyond nationality, ethnicity and religion, giving rise to global solidarities and negotiating their social and cultural spaces. The Lebanese Diaspora explores new forms of identities, alliances and cultural expressions, elucidating the daily experiences of Lebanese immigrants and exploring new ways of thinking about immigration, ethnic identity, community, and culture in a global world.     Description: After all the green beer has been poured and the ubiquitous shamrocks fade away, what does it mean to be Irish American besides St. Patrick’s Day? Who’s Your Paddy traces the evolution of “Irish” as a race-based identity in the U.S. from the 19th century to the present day. Exploring how the Irish have been and continue to be socialized around race, Jennifer Nugent Duffy argues that Irish identity must be understood within the context of generational tensions between different waves of Irish immigrants as well as the Irish community’s interaction with other racial minorities. Using historic and ethnographic research, Duffy sifts through the many racial, class, and gendered dimensions of Irish-American identity by examining three distinct Irish cohorts in Greater New York: assimilated descendants of nineteenth-century immigrants; “white flighters” who immigrated to postwar America and fled places like the Bronx for white suburbs like Yonkers in the 1960s and 1970s; and the newer, largely undocumented migrants who began to arrive in the 1990s. What results is a portrait of Irishness as a dynamic, complex force in the history of American racial consciousness, pertinent not only to contemporary immigration debates but also to the larger questions of what it means to belong, what it means to be American.

    Description: In der Arbeitswelt der DDR bestanden markante soziale Ungleichheiten, die sich mit der Vereinigung verschärften. Die Gesellschaft der DDR war stark über die Arbeit im Betrieb organisiert, die wesentlich zur »Vergesellschaftung« beitrug. Da Betriebe das soziale und materielle Leben organisierten, prägten sie auch soziale Ungleichheit, obwohl sich die DDR als egalitäre Gesellschaft verstand. Jessica Lindner-Elsner untersucht am Beispiel des VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, das den Wartburg baute, wie sich Arbeitsbedingungen und soziale Ungleichheit wandelten. Dies zeigt sie für die Kernbelegschaften und vulnerable Arbeiter:innen wie etwa Strafgefangene, Menschen mit Behinderungen und Ausländer. Sie waren gegenüber Mitarbeiter:innen in Normalarbeitsverhältnissen benachteiligt. Deutlich wird zudem die Ungleichbehandlungen von Frauen, die aufgrund fortbestehender Rollenverteilungen weniger flexibel auf Arbeitsanforderungen regieren konnten. Die Autorin fragt, wie solche Benachteiligungen im planwirtschaftlichen System entstanden. Ebenso zeigt sie, wie sich die Muster sozialer Ungleichheit im Übergang zur Marktwirtschaft veränderten, als das Automobilwerk durch die Treuhandanstalt abgewickelt wurde und mit Opel in Eisenach ein neuer Hersteller übernahm.

Stattdessen hebt er die Notwendigkeit von Aushandlung in einer innereuropäischen kolonialen Kontaktzone hervor, die bisher nicht auf diese Art untersucht wurde.

    Description: In the middle of the 9th century, the Abbey of Fulda founded a subsidiary monastery on the Weser, which was likely transformed into a collegiate monastery in the 10th century. In 1259, the abbot of Fulda sold his rights to the Bishop of Minden. After the Reformation, the episcopal rights passed to the Welfish sovereign in 1576. The collegiate monastery underwent a gradual secularization process from 1850 to 1863. The biographies of the personnel of the Boniface monastery attest to the close connections between the foundation and the city. Beyond Hameln, the book provides prosopographical material for the comparative study of medieval collegiate monasteries.

Based on semi-spontaneous dialogical elicitation data in both Spanish and Quechua gathered via fieldwork in the bilingual community of Huari, Peru, this work provides some challenging answers to these questions.     Description: This book is a detailed study of contact-induced change in the Neo-Aramaic dialect of the Jews of Sanandaj, a town in western Iran. Since its foundation in early 17th century, the city has been home to a significant Jewish community. The Jewish Neo-Aramaic dialect of the town displays different historical layers of contact with various Iranian languages over the course of many centuries. The Iranian languages in question are Gorani, Kurdish, and Persian. Among these, Gorani has had a particularly deep impact on Jewish Neo-Aramaic, whereas the impact of Kurdish, and especially Persian, remains superficial. Jewish Neo-Aramaic records a history of language shift from Gorani to Kurdish in the region. Among these, Gorani has had a particularly deep impact on Jewish Neo-Aramaic, whereas the impact of Kurdish, and especially Persian, remains superficial. Jewish Neo-Aramaic records a history of language shift from Gorani to Kurdish in the region. The book offers insights into contact-induced change in social contexts in which a language is maintained as a demarcation of communal identity in a multilingual setting.

    Description: This book uses sustainability to explore the interfaces between translation studies, the cultural history of knowledge, and Science and Technology studies (STS). The volume examines various material, cultural and epistemic translation practices where sustainability serves as a boundary object between natural and cultural inquiry. By turning to the intellectual traditions that influenced but were left behind by STS and actor-network theory (ANT), we aim to challenge and expand the Sociology of Translation developed in ANT. Concepts such as ‘inscription’ (Derrida), ‘actant’, ‘narrative’ (Greimas), and ‘world/worlding’ (Heidegger, Spivak) were reemployed – translated – in the canonical STS-texts. What networks of meaning were left behind in this reemployment? The book showcases a combination of cultural and knowledge historical perspectives on the construction of the Sociology of Translation and practical experiments across the registers of nature and culture is novel. There have been brilliant individual attempts to realign the Sociology of Translation with narratives and modes of enunciation, but none has related the Sociology of Translation to the networks and traditions which enabled it but to which it erased its relations and debts. This innovative work will appeal to scholars in translation studies, cultural studies, environmental humanities, medical humanities, and Science and Technology studies. Die vormoderne Arbeitswelt war der unseren in mancher Hinsicht ähnlich. Oft gingen Ehepartnerinnen und -partner verschiedenen Erwerbsarbeiten nach, waren in mehreren Berufen tätig. Frauen und Männer, Töchter und Söhne trugen zum Familieneinkommen bei. Frauen waren Meisterinnen, Lohnarbeiterinnen, Unternehmerinnen. Nicht nur beruflich, auch räumlich waren Handwerkerinnen und Handwerker überaus mobil. Der mikrohistorische Fokus auf eine offene Familienwirtschaft ermöglicht es, diese flexiblen handwerklichen Ökonomien zu erfassen. Der Beitrag von Nicole Stadelmanns Buch zur deutschsprachigen Handwerksforschung liegt in der Zusammenführung der zünftigen und außerzünftigen Produktion. Indem dabei die Arbeit der Frauen in der Produktionssphäre sichtbar wird, leistet die Studie auch wichtige Erkenntnisse zur Frauen- und Geschlechtergeschichte.

Schriftliche Textproduktionen gehörloser Signer (=Gebärdenspachbenutzer/-innen) sind deshalb aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven von Bedeutung: Aus Sicht der Mehrsprachigkeitsforschung bieten sie einen Einblick in Prozesse des bimodal bilingualen Spracherwerbs, bei dem eine Laut- und eine Gebärdensprache involviert sind. Aus sprachdidaktischer Perspektive stellt sich in der Folge die Frage zur erfolgreichen Vermittlung schriftsprachlicher Kompetenzen für gehörlose Schüler/-innen.     Description: Nese is a dying Oceanic language spoken on the island of Malekula, in northern Vanuatu. This book, based on first-hand fieldwork data, and without adhering to any particular syntactic framework, presents a synchronic grammatical description of Nese's phonology and syntax. Despite being on the verge of extinction, with fewer than 20 living speakers, the language displays intriguing properties—including but not exclusive to the cross-linguistically rare apicolabial phonemes, interesting vowel-raising patterns in some word classes, and a discontinuous negation relationship that is obligatorily expressed with the irrealis mood marker. This book will probably be the last work published on Nese.

Das am Hamburger Alsterufer erbaute, bemerkenswert großzügig dimensionierte Wohnhaus von Emma und Henry Budge trug zu Recht den Titel »Palais«. Heute residiert hier die Hochschule für Musik und Theater. Von der Hansestadt aus entfaltete das Ehepaar eine rege mäzenatische Tätigkeit, in deren Zuge unter anderem Heime für Hilfsbedürftige etabliert und die Universitäten in Frankfurt und Hamburg unterstützt wurden. Vor allem Emma Budge trug zudem eine umfangreiche und hochkarätige Sammlung angewandter Kunst zusammen, die nach ihrem Tod in den Besitz der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg übergehen sollte. Doch dazu kam es nicht: Nach ihrem Tod musste die Sammlung von den Erben versteigert werden, und im Palais am Alsterufer richtete sich der nationalsozialistische »Reichsstatthalter« ein. Das philanthropische Lebenswerk war damit unwiederbringlich zerstört. Mit dieser ersten umfassenden Biographie aus der Feder Karen Michels` über das außergewöhnliche Ehepaar Budge wird es verdient gewürdigt. Emma (1852-1937) und Henry (1840-1928) Budge Jahrzehntelang lebten die Budges in New York, wo der aus Frankfurt stammende Henry Budge als erfolgreicher Banker und Eisenbahnfinanzier ein enormes Vermögen machte. 1903 kehrte er mit seiner Frau Emma nach Deutschland zurück und ließ sich in Hamburg nieder, der Heimat seiner Gattin."

    Description: Rosa Schapire - emanzipierte Frau, leidenschaftliche Förderin expressionistischer Kunst, entwurzelt im Londoner Exil, aber Kämpferin bis zum Schluss. »Hätte ich im Mittelalter gelebt, ich wäre wohl eine Nonne oder Heilige geworden«, schrieb Rosa Schapire kurz vor ihrem Tod 1954. Um die Jahrhundertwende hatte sie sich gegen traditionelle Rollenbilder und für ein Leben als Intellektuelle entschieden. Als eine der ersten Frauen wurde sie im Fach Kunstgeschichte in Heidelberg promoviert, zog 1905 nach Hamburg und begeisterte sich dort für den gerade aufkommenden Expressionismus – besonders für die Künstlergruppe »Brücke« und Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, den sie später als Mäzenin unterstützte. Ihr Einsatz für die neue Kunstrichtung, die von den Nationalsozialisten als »entartet« verfemt wurde, machte sie – zumal als Jüdin – den Machthabern verdächtig. Der antisemitischen Verfolgung entging sie nur aufgrund ihrer Flucht nach London 1939. Während der Kriegsjahre baute sich Rosa Schapire dort eine neue, allerdings zeitlebens prekäre Existenz u. a. als Übersetzerin auf. Ihre Briefe aus den letzten Lebensjahren an Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, die hier erstmals umfänglich ausgewertet werden, zeigen eine exilierte Frau, die trotz Sorgen und Todessehnsucht, doch immer die Kraft fand, sich für die expressionistische Kunst einzusetzen.

    Chapter Pragmatic aspects of the vocative-nominative competition in addressative function across Slavic languages (2024)

    Description: The study tests the hypothesis according to which the Slavic anthroponyms in -e and -o underwent evolution from vocative endings to hypocoristic derivative suffixes and then to anthroponymic formants. According to the Author, such a hypothesis can be considered entirely plausible, albeit only as a mechanism of formation parallel to and intertwined with other processes of morphemic function change. As a phenomenon observable in both diachrony and synchrony, categorial lability between vocative and word formation can thus be considered inherent in the system of Slavic languages. However the anthroponyms in -e and -o have had different diffusion and distribution in the various Slavic languages and today occupy dissimilar places within the system and varieties of each language.

    Description: Vladivostok is likened to the Bosphorus. The remoteness of the Far East made it difficult for the European part of the Russian Empire to recognise Vladivostok geographically. Therefore, through analogy to the Mediterranean, it was consciously integrated into the state. On the other hand, by using kanji combinations, which evoke images of traditional Japanese poetry, the Japanese created a sense of familiarity with Vladivostok. In most cases, regarding the social situation during the Revolutionary and Intervention War periods, researchers’ interest was restricted to the scheme of the conflict between the Red Army and the White Army and the victory or defeat of the October Revolution. However, more than 30 years after the dissolution of the USSR, the events of this period are now being examined by scholars mainly from the perspective of the residents and outsiders in various regions who, without knowing the consequences of the revolution, were both anticipating and anxious about significant social changes. The multicultural nature of the Far East is being discussed on the occasion of the centenary of the Siberian exodus. This article examines the cultural situation in and around Vladivostok, focusing on developments such as the education system and modernist currents in the arts. Vladivostok served as both an entrance to Siberia for the Japanese or other foreign troops and an exit for emigres.

    Description: In those Slavic languages where the vocative inflectional case endings are used inconsistently, a statistically increased occurrence of vocative’s endings can be observed with nouns having a diminutive or hypocoristic semantics. Assuming that is the ‘affective charge’ of some specific nouns which enhances the probability of vocative case forms, the present paper has two aims: 1. to verify empirically in three Slavic languages (Serbian, Polish, Bulgarian) whether the vocative case is better preserved with nouns having a derogatory semantics (insults and bad words), 2. to establish which are the rules governing their use.

The focus lies on the methods of conflict resolution within this social class in the Middle Ages and early modern period, from duels to court proceedings. Other contributions are dealing with the Christian missionization of the Lower Rhine region and the siege of the city of Moers by Royal Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War. A fundamental account of the relationship between the Dutch and German languages rounds off the volume.

    Description: Writing does not begin and end with the encoding of an idea into a group of symbols. It is practiced by people who have learnt its principles and acquired the tools and skills for doing it, in a particular context that affects what they do and how they do it. Nor are these practices static, as those involved exploit opportunities to adapt old features and develop new ones. The act of writing then has tangible and visible consequences not only for the writers but also for those encountering what has been produced, whether they can read its content or not – with potential for a wider social visibility that can in turn affect the success and longevity of the writing system itself. With a focus on the syllabic systems of the Bronze Age Aegean, this book attempts to bring together different perspectives to create an innovative interdisciplinary outlook on what is involved in writing: from structuralist views of writing as systems of signs with their linguistic values, to archaeological and anthropological approaches to writing as a socially grounded practice. The main chapters focus on the concepts of script adoption and adaptation; different methods of logographic writing; and the vitality of writing traditions, with repercussions for the modern world.     Description: Edited by Martin Biddle with a catalogue of the known coins of the mint by Yvonne Harvey, this volume records and illustrates the minting of silver pennies in Winchester between the reigns of Alfred the Great and Henry III, a period of three and a half centuries. At the Mint, which was situated in the area of the High Street to the east of where the city’s cross now stands, at least 24 million silver pennies (possibly as many as 50 million) were struck. Five and a half thousand survive in museums and collections all over the world. These have been sought out and photographed (some 3200 coins in 6400 images detailing both sides), and minutely catalogued by Yvonne Harvey for this volume. 〈br〉〈br〉 During the period from late in the reign of Alfred to the time of Henry III, dies for striking the coins were produced centrally under royal authority in the most sophisticated system of monetary control at the time in the western world. In this first account of a major English mint to have been made in forty years, a team of leading authorities have studied and analysed the use the Winchester moneyers made of the dies, and together with the size, weight, and the surviving number of coins from each pair of dies, have produced a detailed account of the varying fortunes of the mint over this period. Their results are critical for the economic history of England and the changing status of Winchester over this long period, and provide the richest available source for the history of the name of the city and the personal names of its citizens in the later Anglo-Saxon period.

    Description: Die »alternative« als fortlaufender Versuch, mit den Mitteln einer Zeitschrift auf die Verhältnisse ihrer Zeit einzuwirken. In den Jahren um 1968 entwickelte sich aus einem kleinen literarischen Magazin eine der meistgelesenen Theoriezeitschriften der Bundesrepublik. Unter der Herausgeberin Hildegard Brenner wurde die »alternative« zu einem Forum intellektueller Entdeckungen und Wiederentdeckungen. Ideengeschichtliche Traditionen des westlichen Marxismus wurden hier ebenso diskutiert wie der französische Strukturalismus und die feministische Kritik der Psychoanalyse, literaturpolitische Auseinandersetzungen in Ost und West ebenso wie die politischen Bewegungen der Zeit. Einen Leitfaden der »alternative« bildete die fortlaufende Reflexion darüber, wie mit intellektuellen Mitteln gesellschaftliche Wirkung zu erzeugen sei - bis im linken Krisenjahrzehnt der 1970er Jahre vermehrt das Scheitern an diesem Anspruch zum Thema der Zeitschrift wurde. Moritz Neuffer rekonstruiert die Kollektivbiografie der Redakteurinnen, Autoren und Leserinnen und fragt, was das Publizieren in der »journalistischen Form« der Zeitschrift von anderen Formen des Denkens und Schreibens unterscheidet.

For a good professional training of students, teaching materials should be flexible and up-to-date, they should present the language actually used in everyday communication in any sphere of life and work. This textbook applies the model of communicative analysis of N.S. Valgina to the analysis of written texts of mostly non-literary type, which promotes the development of analytical competence at the textual, linguistic and stylistic levels. The course is intended for advanced Russian language students (B2 +) studying at the Master's level of linguistic studies.

Am Beispiel von Kopfschmerzen kann Stefan Dreßke zeigen, dass die physische Empfindlichkeit den Normen und Praktiken sozialer Milieus, des Geschlechts und des Alters folgt. Die soziologische Studie mit Berichten von 136 Frauen und Männern untersucht die sich zunehmend differenzierenden Deutungen des Körperausdrucks und den Wandel der Krankheitsvorstellungen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Krankheiten der Empfindlichkeit Narrative sind, die der Verständigung in Sprach- und Praxiscodes dienen und die institutionellen Regimes folgen.

For example, any in English and wh-mo in Japanese appear in negative contexts, but not in positive contexts. While previous studies have shown that polarity-sensitive expressions are a general phenomenon in languages, it has also become clear that there are variations in polarity-sensitive expressions. This volume explores the variations in polarity-sensitive expressions through comparisons between Japanese and other languages, such as English, German, Spanish, and Old Japanese, and examines the environments and contexts in which polarity-sensitive expressions occur, as well as the types of (cross-linguistic) variation allowed. The value of the present volume lies in its inclusion of research papers inquiring into various types of polarity-sensitive expressions, such as negative-, positive-, and discourse-sensitive polarity items as well as their variations.     Description: Adel und Armut - diese beiden Begriffe scheinen nicht zusammenzupassen. Wer an Adel in der Zeit des Kaiserreichs denkt, assoziiert zumeist Schlösser, weitläufigen Landbesitz, rauschende Bälle, auf denen elegante Damen in prächtigen Kleidern mit schneidigen Gardeoffizieren tanzen. Der Adel gilt als Elite- und zwar besonders für die Zeit vor 1914, die im Rückblick oft gleichsam als seine letzte Blütezeit erscheint. Dabei handelt es sich aber um ein unvollständiges Bild adliger Lebenswirklichkeiten im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Johanna M. Singer zeigt einen anderen Teil der Geschichte des Adels im Kaiserreich, einen Teil, der wenig bekannt ist, der fernab von mondänem Lebensstil und politischem Einfluss stattfand und der den scheinbar so offensichtlichen Zusammenhang von Adel und Elite konterkariert. Er führt uns in die Welt adliger Frauen, die in kleinen Etagenwohnungen lebten, sich kein Dienstpersonal leisten konnten, sondern vielmehr selbst 'in Stellung gehen' mussten. Armut im Adel war in der Zeit um 1900 eine soziale Realität, die insbesondere ledige Frauen und Witwen betraf. Ihre Geschichte wurde bisher noch nicht geschrieben. Die Autorin geht Ursachen, Ausprägungen und Bewältigungsstrategien weiblicher Armut im Adel nach und fragt nicht zuletzt danach, wie die Frauen selbst und ihre Familien, aber auch Standesgenossen und staatliche Stellen mit diesem Phänomen umgingen.

    Description: The volume contains Andrea Trovesi’s linguistic writings, hitherto scattered in various journals and miscellanies, all characterized by a pragmatic approach. The first part collects studies on Slavic vocative conducted from a comparative-historical perspective ranging from Proto-Slavic to modern Slavic languages. These focus in particular on categorical transformations of the vocative, its relics, so-called ‘new vocatives,’ and pragmatic values developed in the various Slavic languages. The second part of the volume is devoted to modal meanings of the imperfect in a Slavic-Romance contrastive framework. The research privileges Bulgarian, but does not neglect the other Slavic languages of which it analyzes interesting residual peripheral aspects of such linguistic usage. Both lines of research presented here stand out for their originality and theoretical value considered from a point of view that leads from Slavic linguistics to the broader perspective of linguistics as a science of language.

    Description: Issues in Japanese Psycholinguistics from Comparative Perspectives compiles over 30 state-of-the-art articles on Japanese psycholinguistics. It emphasizes the importance of using comparative perspectives when conducting psycholinguistic research. Psycholinguistic studies of Japanese have contributed greatly to the field from a cross-linguistic perspective. However, the target languages for comparison have been limited. Most research focuses on English and a few other typologically similar languages. As a result, many current theories of psycholinguistics fail to acknowledge the nature of ergative-absolutive and/or object-before-subject languages. The cross-linguistic approach is not the only method of comparison in psycholinguistics. Other prominent comparative aspects include comprehension vs. production, native speakers vs. second language learners, typical vs. aphasic language development. Many of these approaches are underrepresented in Japanese psycholinguistics. The studies reported in the volumes attempt to bridge these gaps. Using various experimental and/or computational methods, they address issues of the universality/diversity of the human language and the nature of the relationship between human cognitive modules.     Description: Das Leben Helmuth Plessners - Zeugnis einer Geistesgeschichte zwischen Exil und Remigration. Helmuth Plessner ist einer der interessantesten deutschen Intellektuellen des 20. Jahrhunderts. In der Weimarer Republik wies der Mitbegründer der philosophischen Anthropologie radikale Ideologien zurück. Als »Halbjude« 1933 von der Universität Köln entlassen, emigrierte er in die Niederlande und lehrte an der Universität Groningen, bis er 1943 von der deutschen Besatzungsmacht erneut relegiert wurde. Die letzten Kriegsjahre überlebte er im Untergrund. Nach dem Krieg erhielt er seine Groninger Professur zurück und nahm 1951 einen Ruf nach Göttingen an. Plessner wirkte entscheidend am Wiederaufbau der Philosophie an den deutschen Universitäten nach 1945 mit und gehört zu den Gründungsvätern der bundesdeutschen Soziologie. Bekannt wurde er vor allem mit seiner im Exil entstandenen Deutschlandstudie »Die verspätete Nation«. Carola Dietze legt die erste Biographie Helmuth Plessners vor, die auf Archivquellen basiert. Sie führt in Plessners Philosophie ein und analysiert, welchen Einfluß die Erfahrung der Emigration auf sein Denken hatte. Exemplarisch werden der Verlauf eines Wissenschaftsexils in den Niederlanden, die Gründe für eine Rückkehr nach Deutschland und die Situation eines Remigranten in der Bundesrepublik der fünfziger Jahre untersucht.

Worship of these mountains involves prayer, meditation and pilgrimage. Christianity, which for a long time showed little interest in nature, provides a foil to these practices and was one factor in the tensions that arose in the age of colonialism. Decolonisation and the 'ecological turn' changed the religious power of interpretation and gave discourses about sacred mountains new meaning. Globally, however, they remain an outstanding example of cultural diversity, also touching on issues of gender justice and environmental protection. A translation from the original German.

    Description: Der mediterrane Raum gehört weltweit zu den Gebieten mit der höchsten seismischen Aktivität. Insbesondere Griechenland und die heutige Türkei, aber auch große Teile Italiens oder der Levante wurden und werden in regelmäßigen Abständen von Erdbeben heimgesucht, die nicht selten katastrophale Folgen haben. Diese Ereignisse wurden bereits in der antiken Literatur in vielfältiger Art und Weise reflektiert und gedeutet. Innerhalb der altertumswissenschaftlichen Forschung ist das Thema Erdbeben in den letzten Jahrzehnten zwar verschiedentlich aufgegriffen worden, doch konzentrierte man sich dabei auf einige wenige Aspekte: Im Vordergrund standen die Katalogisierung von Einzelfällen, die Aufbereitung antiker Erklärungsansätze sowie die Untersuchung des materiellen Bewältigungshandelns. Zu vertiefenden Analysen, die das Phänomen über die Jahrhunderte hinweg, in seiner breiten räumlichen Ausdehnung und unter Berücksichtigung der verschiedenen Zeugnisformen betrachten, ist es bisher nicht gekommen. An dieser Stelle setzt der vorliegende Sammelband an. Er fragt nach den Beziehungen zwischen dem Eintreten von extremen seismischen Ereignissen und zeitgenössischen Weltanschauungen, nach Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Rekonstruierbarkeit vergangener Bebenkatastrophen sowie nach den Modi ihrer literarischen Repräsentation. Zu diesem Zweck versammelt der Band Expertisen aus unterschiedlichen altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen (Geschichts- und Literaturwissenschaft, Archäologie, Epigraphik) und darüber hinaus (historische Seismologie, Sinologie).

Emil Artin zählt zu den maßgeblichen Mathematikern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Geboren 1898 in Wien, kam er 1922 nach Hamburg, wo er in seiner wissenschaftlichen Karriere mit bahnbrechenden Arbeiten wesentlich dazu beitrug, dass die Mathematik an der noch jungen Hamburgischen Universität Weltgeltung erlangte. Im Herbst 1937 verließ Artin wegen der NS-Diktatur und der jüdischen Herkunft seiner Ehefrau Natascha Deutschland. Zwei Jahrzehnte lang lebten sie mit den drei gemeinsamen Kindern in den USA. Artin wirkte als Professor an den Universitäten von Notre Dame, Bloomington und Princeton. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Emigranten kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und hatte von 1958 bis zu seinem frühen Tod im Dezember 1962 einen Lehrstuhl an seiner »alten« Universität Hamburg inne. Das Porträt zeigt Emil Artin nicht nur als brillanten Forscher, Lehrer und Vortragenden, sondern als vielseitig interessierten Menschen. Artin hatte eine ausgeprägte Neigung zur Musik, spielte mehrere Instrumente und bewegte sich in einem kreativen Freundeskreis aus bedeutenden Wissenschaftlern und Künstlern. Eine zweimonatige Reise nach Island im Jahr 1925 hielt er in einem Reisetagebuch sowie in Fotografien fest. Emil Artin (1898-1962) kam nach seinem Studium in Wien und Leipzig 1922 als Assistent an das Mathematische Seminar der Hamburgischen Universität, wo er innerhalb weniger Jahre zum Ordinarius aufstieg. Von der NS-Diktatur 1937 ins Exil vertrieben, war er zwei Jahrzehnte lang an amerikanischen Universitäten tätig, bevor er 1958 nach Hamburg zurückkehrte.

Sie zeigt: Die soziale Konstruktion von Intergeschlechtlichkeit als zugleich tabuisiertem und medizinisch hochrelevantem Phänomen ist nicht nur auf der medizinisch-praktischen Ebene von Ambivalenzen und Verwerfungen geprägt. Die Studie reflektiert zudem den sozialen Gehalt von Körper und Geschlecht und verweist so auf das gesellschaftstheoretische Potential von Intergeschlechtlichkeit als sozialer Kategorie.

Brežnevs prägte ein Widerspruch: Auf der einen Seite wollte die politische Führung durch "Vertrauen in die Kader" und eine "Politik der Normalität" nach Nikita Chruščevs sprunghafter Politik eine neue Phase der Stabilität und Berechenbarkeit einläuten. In der Erinnerung vieler sowjetischer Bürger gilt die Brežnev-Ära darum rückblickend als "Goldenes Zeitalter" mit steigendem Lebensstandard. Auf der anderen Seite fand sich die sowjetische Gesellschaft in einer Phase beschleunigten sozialen Wandels wieder. Zeitgleich versagten Legitimationsmuster, ökonomische Steuerung und politische Entscheidungsfindung in einem solchen Maße, dass die Reformbedürftigkeit der sowjetischen Ordnung allzu deutlich wurde und sich Ende der 1970er Jahre eine Kommunikation über ihre Defizite und mögliche Alternativen etablierte. Die Antwort der Brežnev-Führung war eine noch stärkere Selbstvergewisserung: Für die eigene Stabilität und Normalität nahm sie ein eingeschränktes Sichtfeld in Kauf. Der Sammelband thematisiert die für die sowjetische Ordnung dieser Zeit prägende "Hyperstabilität" in Fallbeispielen zu Großprojekten, stadtplanerischen Projekten, Dissidenten, Künstlern und außenpolitischen Experten. Der Band fragt nach Spezifika der Brežnev-Ära, zeigt neue Forschungsperspektiven auf und setzt sich kritisch mit ihrer traditionellen Bewertung als "Zeitalter der Stagnation" auseinander. Seine Perspektive auf die Wechselverhältnisse von internen Prozessen und transnationaler Verflechtung leistet einen Beitrag zum neu erwachten Interesse an den 1970er Jahren als einer Periode tiefgreifenden sozialen Wandels in West und Ost.

    Description: Als Produzent für Regenmäntel wurde die Firma Rappolt & Söhne, die seit 1928 den Markennamen ERES trug, bekannt. Drei Generationen prägten die Unternehmensgeschichte. Der Name durfte bleiben, die Familie nicht. Das Hamburger Unternehmen Oppenheim & Rappolt wurde 1862 gegründet, firmierte seit 1897 unter dem Namen Rappolt & Söhne und existierte bis 1982 unter dem Markennahmen ERES. Gründer Joseph Rappolt (1835-1907) und danach seine Söhne Paul, Arthur und Franz leiteten die Geschicke der Firma, deren Sitz sich seit 1912 in der Mönckebergstraße 11 befand. Bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg waren Regenmäntel das Hauptgeschäft, später ergänzten leichte und schwerere Stoffmäntel für Damen und Herren das Sortiment. 1938 mussten die Rappolts ihre Firma verkaufen, als Juden drohte ihnen die Deportation. Die meisten jüngeren Familienmitglieder konnten unter großen Schwierigkeiten aus Deutschland fliehen, die älteren wollten sich nicht zur rechtzeitigen Emigration entscheiden; einige von ihnen wählten den Freitod, andere wurden ermordet. Franz Rappolt (1870-1943) – der sich als angesehener Bürger ehrenamtlich in Vereinen und im Plenum der Hamburger Handelskammer engagierte, diese Tätigkeit jedoch 1933 unfreiwillig aufgeben musste – starb wie seine Schwägerin Johanna (1870-1942) in Theresienstadt, sein Bruder Paul (1863-1940) starb noch vor der Deportation. Das Rappolt-Haus in der Mönckebergstraße 11 und 13 prägt bis heute das Bild von Hamburgs bekanntester Einkaufsmeile. Das imposante Gebäude wurde im Auftrag der Firma Rappolt & Söhne errichtet. Nach 1933 mussten die beiden Firmeninhaber Franz und Paul Rappolt mit ihren Familien erleben, wie die Nationalsozialisten ihre erfolgreiche Arbeit torpedierten, sich Schritt für Schritt ihres Eigentums bemächtigten und sie zuletzt mit dem Tod bedrohten.

    Description: Besides its temporal semantics, the imperfect tense can express a wide range of modal meanings, which occur most typically in spoken varieties of language. The paper contrastively explores the modal uses of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian, a Romance and Slavic language respectively, and shows to what extent they are similar or diverge in the two languages. Although the basic notional configuration of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian seems to be exactly the same, occurrences of modal meanings are less frequent in Bulgarian than in Italian. Possible explanatory hypotheses suggest that the peculiarities of the tense system (dedicated future-in-the-past form; specific narrative mood), as well as the different syntactic rules governing the sequence of tenses in related sentences, put major constraints on the development of modal meanings of the imperfect tense in Bulgarian.

In seiner zeithistorischen Studie analysiert Matthias Röhr diesen durchwachsenen Verlauf und zeigt auf, wie die Bundespost in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren mit Bildschirmtext und ISDN auf diese Entwicklung reagierte, und warum Hackerkulturen als Reaktion hierauf für ein »Menschenrecht auf freien Datenaustausch« eintraten.
