    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Envois & Dédicaces constitue une réflexion sur le don du livre, qu’il se manifeste par un ex-dono, un envoi manuscrit ou une dédicace imprimée. Si cette dernière a été étudiée à propos de tel ou tel auteur, il nous manquait encore une réflexion d’ensemble sur celle-ci. Quant à l’envoi, jugé marginal et mondain, il n’a guère été abordé, hormis par les bibliophiles. On en trouvera ici un « bref traité » qui en souligne toute la richesse. Pas plus qu’il n’existe d’éléments insignifiants dans la vie psychique, ainsi que Freud nous l’a appris, il n’existe dans le livre de détail dépourvu de valeur. La modernité s’est intéressée longuement à la signature, beaucoup moins à l’envoi et à la dédicace, parce qu’elle estimait la littérature intransitive. Elle transite cependant et s’adresse à quelqu’un. Et ce qui semble à première vue accessoire joue un rôle non négligeable, sinon capital, dans la constitution du sens d’un livre. Telle est l’hypothèse d’Envois & Dédicaces, et son pari. Sa première partie, « Perspective cavalière » s’interroge, entre autres, sur la position en tiers du lecteur ainsi que sur la place de la dédicace, premiers mots d’un livre qui se révèlent souvent aussi ses derniers mots. La seconde, « Couleurs locales », examine la façon dont quelques auteurs se sont appropriés ce geste : un musicien, Bach, et cinq écrivains, Voltaire, Hugo, Baudelaire, Montherlant, Goffette, ce dernier nous offrant, en guise de conclusion, un poème inédit adressé « à ceux qui partent ».

Arthur Rimbaud n’écrira plus après la mort de Vitalie, s’en ira très loin, même ; puis, reviendra mourir auprès d’Isabelle : comme par écho, l’œuvre se renverse dans le miroir des deux sœurs.Tout texte a ses sirènes : voix qui nous leurrent et dont la faiblesse tient à ce pouvoir extrême qu’elles ont de ne se confiner jamais au seul espace que couvre la page, mais de migrer au moyen de tous les mots quotidiennement mis, à toute heure de tout jour, dans toutes les langues en usage, à la disposition de l’humain.

    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

    Description: À la fin de 1941, à Nice, Aragon rencontre Matisse dans des circonstances qui conduiront à une collaboration suivie où chacun des deux artistes trouve son compte. Henri Matisse, roman, publié en 1971, est l’ultime et flamboyant témoignage de ces échanges. Prodigieux assemblages de textes écrits sur trente ans, le livre d’Aragon est à la fois un témoignage non-fictionnel sur un peintre - entre biographie, autobiographie et critique d’art -, une composition "romanesque" qui mélange les genres littéraires (poème, articles, essais, rêveries sur Matisse) et l’expérience matérielle d’un livre de luxe richement illustré qui définit son propre espace visuel. La présente étude se propose de poser les fondements d’une poétique de la composition qui va bien au-delà de la pratique éditoriale du recueil. Cet espace livresque sans grand équivalent dans l’histoire de la littérature interroge en profondeur les frontières de la représentation dans l’exhibition permanente des éléments de la présentation. La relation critique du peintre et du poète, du visible et du lisible conduit à une interrogation en acte sur les modalités de l’écriture - sujet, temps, espace - et de la lecture. L’analyse proposée tente de rendre sensibles les coordonnées d’une expérience de la création littéraire confrontée à son alter ego, et celles d’une expérience à la fois du pouvoir et de la fragilité des critères d’identification de l’objet littéraire : sujet et objet, fictionnel et référentiel, récit et discours. Lire Henri Matisse, roman, c’est éprouver en même temps l’éclatement de l’écrit dans son contact avec l’inassimilable, et la persistance, au delà des ruptures, d’un discours inspiré. Le livre rassemble les décombres d’un grand édifice national et les transforme en chantier d’une œuvre littéraire désormais impossible.

    Description: « Ce livre devenu un classique », selon Owen Chadwick, comprend deux parties dont seule la seconde est traduite ici, la première ayant déjà fait l’objet d’une traduction en 1968. John Henry Newman, nommé recteur fondateur, en 1851, d’une université catholique à Dublin, réfléchit aux objectifs d’une telle institution. Il met au premier plan la formation de l’esprit tout autant que l’acquisition du savoir afin de parvenir à une véritable culture humaniste. Il traite des rapports entre raison et foi, science et théologie, il insiste sur les liens qui unissent langue et littérature, il aborde les problèmes d’éthique médicale ; il préconise une recherche libre de tout préjugé mais éclairée par une pensée chrétienne qui a assimilé la culture antique. Cependant il n’ignore pas les applications pratiques qu’entraîne une telle création. Un ensemble de facultés, complémentaires les unes des autres, devra se développer à partir du noyau initial qu’est la Faculté des Arts et des Lettres, élément essentiel de tout enseignement universitaire. Celui-ci sera ainsi vivifié par la recherche et maintiendra le rapport d’un savoir particulier à une connaissance plus générale. À notre époque où l’Université s’interroge sur sa raison d’être, l’idéal exigeant de Newman reste tout à fait d’actualité.

    Description: Cette étude sur le clergé mérovingien et carolingien, envisagée dans ses rapports avec le pouvoir politique et dans son activité pastorale, est saisie dans une perspective évolutive pour faire ressortir les changements et les différences selon les temps et les lieux. L’auteur, a dû embrasser une documentation énorme et pulvérisée : les listes épiscopales ou abbatiales, les canons des conciles, les capitulaires, les vies des saints lorsqu’elles existent et il a réussi de la sorte à dégager des constatations nouvelles, apportant une image vivante, diversifiée et contrastée du monde ecclésiastique à l’époque franque. On savait déjà que ce monde n’était pas statique et homogène, mais on ne le savait pas avec une telle précision. Durant cinq siècles, le clergé fut en quête de son identité : fonctionnaire public ou homme de Dieu. Ainsi se juxtaposent un Martin qui récuse les dotations fiscales de l’État et un Rémi qui les sollicite, des clercs mondains attachés à leurs privilèges et des évêques, inspirés par Lérins qui procèdent à une conversion des mœurs avant d’entrer en charge, enfin des prélats aristocrates, ayant un sens aigu du devoir et du droit pour servir de médiateur auprès de Dieu et du prince et des clercs simoniaques, devenus les serviles vassaux des clans aristocratiques. Le baptême de Clovis avait laissé espérer une docilité du pouvoir aux conseils de l’épiscopat, le concile d’Orléans de 511 plaça le clergé sous la coupe royale. Les revenus des diocèses destinés aux œuvres de paix furent affectés pour la guerre et les synodes se transformèrent en tribunaux politiques. Grégoire-le-Grand et les moines luxoviens dénoncèrent ces vices et affirmèrent une spécificité et une qualité du clergé par un costume et un mode de vie. Boniface dénonça les falsipiscopi violents et prévaricateurs puis Chrodegang fit du clergé l’organisateur de la liturgie impériale et des grandes cérémonies expiatoires pour le salut de l’empire carolingien. Le bilan dressé en 811 par Charlemagne, de fonctionnaires corrompus et de médiocres pasteurs, n’est guère flatteur.     Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times.     Description: A-t-on séjourné chez des amis que la courtoisie oblige à les en remercier par une missive appelée lettre de château. L’auteur de ce livre, qui a eu la chance de côtoyer un peintre (Delvaux), des romanciers (Hyvernaud, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam), des essayistes (Barthes, Quignard), des poètes (Follain, Ghil, Jaccottet, Ponge, Reverdy, Tardieu), a souhaité leur rendre hommage. Il en a résulté ce livre. Son lecteur pourra y discerner des motifs de prédilection et peut-être une méthode. L’auteur n’a pas souhaité les expliciter, persuadé qu’il est que la littérature n’exprime jamais que des singularités. Et qu’il est nécessaire, aujourd’hui plus que jamais, de les affirmer, comme autant de mots de désordre propres à désorganiser les savoirs convenus de la critique.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

L’auteur de ce livre a choisi d’explorer les mauvaises manières de la pensée que la littérature, généreusement, accueille : penser à des riens, penser sans produire de pensées, pensée qui s’affole de la multiplicité des possibles et qui bute sur des contradictions insurmontables, et même mauvaises pensées que l’écrivain s’acharne à penser cependant. Au philosophe qui enchaîne des idées claires en une démonstration efficace, ce livre substitue, entre rire et pathologie, un portrait de l’écrivain en monomaniaque titubant, hanté par l’incorrigible manie de penser.

C’est aussi cet objet singulier - voiture à deux sièges se faisant face - qui génère les écarts et impose des rapprochements. C’est enfin cet instrument du voyage et de l’écriture que Sterne fait apparaître, à l’orée du Voyage Sentimental, comme en exergue. Opération de l’écriture, le vis-à-vis appelle une activité de lecture singulière. D’une certaine façon, le lecteur, en ce que sa singularité est exclue par cette machine d’écriture, doit l’affronter. D’une autre, il s’y reconnaît comme partenaire implicite, voire explicite, comme complice. Au détour des conventions et des innovations de ce récit de voyage, au gré des ruptures, des absences et des récurrences, au fil des aveux et des désaveux du personnage d’auteur, se tisse l’interrogation de l’objet littéraire, du projet d’écriture. On pose, ici, le vis-à-vis comme étant, simultanément, l’opération fondatrice de l’écriture de Sterne et l’objet représentatif qui l’autorise et la rythme.

In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: L’avènement, au milieu des années 1980, d’un roman dit “impassible” a piqué l’attention de la critique qui a vu là l’émergence d’une littérature de l’ère du vide - l’expression nouvelle d’une manière d’être au monde légère et désabusée. Apparu aux éditions de Minuit, ce mouvement, dont Echenoz et Toussaint sont les plus dignes représentants, a semblé à beaucoup dans la descendance directe du nouveau roman mâtiné d’un zest de formalisme ludique. Chevillard, souvent rapproché d’Echenoz et Toussaint pour sa prose désinvolte et grave, a connu dans le même temps la faveur d’une critique exigeante qui a vu chez lui le triomphe de l’ironie et de la subversion douce. Tous les trois ont en partage d’avoir incarné avec l’apparition de leurs premières œuvres un renouveau narratif joueur et cyclothymique. Qu’en est-il vraiment de ce renouveau narratif résolument ludique ? Est-il aussi léger qu’on a bien voulu le croire ? Quelles sont ses formes et ses expressions ? Que signifie-t-il ? Que dit-il du monde contemporain et de la place qu’y occupe la littérature ? C’est à toutes ces questions que ce travail espère proposer des éléments de réponse en faux contre les discours convenus sur la mort du roman et le règne de la frivolité.

    Description: « Je ne suis pas moderne », jetait Camus en manière de défi. C’est que le classicisme tragique de l’écrivain donna le vrai ton de notre modernité après Auschwitz. En alerte nouvelle, la méditation de Camus valait de s’inscrire depuis le nihilisme dont, sous le nom d’absurde, il fit le diagnostic et la généalogie sans concevoir de s’y soumettre, d’y sacrifier la joie d’exister ou d’en accommoder le désastre sous quelque promesse de rédemption. Son souci fut du temps, jamais exactement au rendez-vous des hommes. Haussant cette plainte du temps en interpellation, il y médita l’idée de notre communauté. Aujourd’hui, l’actualité de l’œuvre de Camus fait symptôme pour notre époque : les auteurs lisent ensemble essai et poème, interrogent les signes rompus et précurseurs d’une démocratie à venir. Ils saluent une œuvre radicale, qui arpente les figures du mal, demande que l’homme réenchante le visage de la terre, nous aide à requalifier notre présent.

Se donne à lire ici un Chateaubriand désœuvré, dépossédé, privé de la main et de la manuscripture, aliéné à sa propre mort. "Ma main… n’est pas revenue : je meurs par morceaux.", aura-t-il écrit, sur le pas de la mort. Émasculé ou manchot ? Peut-être… Un Chateaubriand en tout cas qui n’en finit pas de finir, et crève d’inachèvement ; un Vicomte, enfin, qui jouit de l’obscène effeuillage de sa propre mort.

    Description: Creusant les racines du genre épistolaire, ce recueil commenté de quelques quatre-vingt lettres adressées à Charles Maurras par ses amis : des figures tutélaires de l’Action française (Jacques Bainville, Léon de Montesquiou, Lucien Moreau, Henri Vaugeois), des hommes de confiance (Bernard de Vaulx, l’amiral Antoine Schwerer), des références intellectuelles (Robert Brasillach, Thierry Maulnier) ou des « bras armés » (Maurice Pujo, Georges Calzant, Lucien Lacour, Marius Plateau, Maxime Réal del Sarte), rend compte du comportement et des postures politiques de cohortes générationnelles unies. Marquées par les violences de guerre, imprégnée de valeurs royalistes, nationales, catholiques ou « anti-boches », elles expriment une adhésion sans partage aux idéologies maurrassiennes sous les mots de billets fiévreux ou de longues missives qui témoignent de l’urgente envie d’agir. Ces correspondances respectueuses autant qu’empathiques avec le « Cher Maître », choisies pour l’exploitation directe qu’elles autorisent sur l’intime de chacun et le lien privilégié entretenu avec Maurras, mettent au jour un corpus homogène par la place qu’il réserve à la logique collective qui anime en les soudant groupes, réseaux et cercles de sociabilités. Pour autant, ressortent les spécificités sociales et culturelles de trajectoires individuelles, disjointes parfois dans les écarts de tranches d’âge, restituant pour l’historien la singularité de positionnements politiques mus par l’intransigeance de l’engagement.

    Description: On a réuni en Espagne sous le nom de « Génération de 1898 » un groupe d’écrivains profondément marqués par le désastre qu’a représenté pour le pays la perte de ses dernières colonies, Cuba et les Philippines. Ces hommes sont très différents entre eux, mais ils ont quelques orientations communes : la mise en question radicale de l’Espagne officielle ; une volonté de changement réceptive aux formes de vie des autres nations européennes, sans faire disparaître les caractères propres à leur pays ; la recherche de nouvelles valeurs esthétiques et idéologiques éloignées de tout positivisme simpliste et faisant place au vital et au tragique. Rejetant une certaine vision de l’Espagne traditionnelle où l’Église occupe une situation centrale, ces hommes échappent à une orthodoxie catholique. On voudrait éclairer les relations complexes qu’ils entretiennent avec cette Église, laquelle, conservant ses rigidités doctrinales, s’est lancée dans une reconquête d’influence dont les objectifs et les méthodes ne sont pas toujours les mieux choisis malgré quelques tentatives d’ouverture sociale. On souhaiterait aussi montrer que presque tous les hommes de 1898 ont des préoccupations religieuses qui ont évolué, mais dont les modalités très diverses méritent d’être mieux connues.

The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Incapable de vaincre militairement la Grande-Bretagne sur les mers, Napoléon 1er recourt à la guerre économique sur le continent. Pour ce faire, il envisage une fermeture totale du marché européen aux produits britanniques. Les interdictions commerciales françaises et les mesures de représailles anglaises représentaient une grave menace pour les négociants des villes portuaires de l’Empire napoléonien. Par conséquent, ceux-ci s’efforcent de contrecarrer la législation prohibitive du Blocus continental par tous les moyens possibles. L’analyse des réactions du négoce de Bordeaux, Hambourg et Livourne démontre que le recours aux navires neutres, la déviation des routes commerciales, la corruption et la contrebande sont des armes puissantes qui rendent largement inefficaces les tentatives du régime d’interdire les relations commerciales entre la Grande-Bretagne et l’Europe. L’étude comparée des trois villes permet de constater que cette incapacité du régime napoléonien à appliquer efficacement sa politique commerciale n’est pas une défaillance locale, occasionnelle, due à une conjoncture particulière, mais plutôt une donnée structurelle qui s’explique par des faiblesses internes à toute son administration, et par l’existence de cet adversaire redoutable qu’est le négoce, avec ses intérêts souvent opposés à ceux du régime, et dont les logiques et les horizons internationaux ne pouvaient pas se plier à une optique nationale et étatique.

    Description: L’ouvrage est la version abrégée d’une thèse de doctorat d’histoire dont le projet de recherche était de contribuer à l’histoire maritime du xixe siècle à partir de l’observatoire particulier que constitue Calais, port secondaire dans l’ensemble français mais maillon essentiel sur la route de Paris à Londres. A cette fin, l’auteur analyse l’extension des infrastructures et des équipements du port ainsi que l’intensification des échanges entre 1814 et 1914, dans la perspective des rapports entre le port et la ville. Les mutations technologiques et les fluctuations dues à la concurrence dans le passage transmanche rythment l’histoire du port de Calais au xixe siècle tandis que l’activité urbaine est bouleversée très tôt par la naturalisation de l’industrie anglaise des tulles et dentelles mécaniques qui transforment Calais et Saint-Pierre en « Nottingham français » dès le milieu du siècle. Le passage des voyageurs est la fonction essentielle du port et, comme de nos jours, elle a tendance à accaparer les autres activités maritimes à moyenne et longue portée, pêche, cabotage et navigation au long-cours, qui se développent dans des proportions plus importantes dans les ports voisins de Boulogne-sur-Mer et Dunkerque. Mais Calais demeure, à la différence d’autres ports, indispensable au système des échanges européens en tant que « ville-pont » et à la défense nationale comme place de guerre de premier ordre. Ces caractères très particuliers expliquent que l’industrialisation qui transforme Saint-Pierre en grand centre textile sous le Second Empire ne soit pas parvenue à enrayer le développement des infrastructures du port avec les grands travaux du Plan Freycinet. Ils justifient en tous cas la longue résistance de « Calais Nord » à entrer dans une nouvelle agglomération. La réunion des deux communes en 1885 consacre l’équation calaisienne qui semble tenir en ces termes : une ville industrielle anglaise contiguë à un port de passage d’envergure européenne, mais sans armateurs et sans activité halieutique notable.

    Description: Le charme indiscret est une histoire éternelle, remplie de sentiments universels – amitié, amour, joie, gravité, désespoir, méfiance – … et de sexe. Le récit commence le jour même de la proclamation du Traité de Westphalie (1648), qui met un terme à la Guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans entre le Roi d’Espagne et les États de Hollande. Dans l’euphorie des festivités, Jan Schuermans, intelligent et sémillant curé d’Ename, paisible village de Flandre, faisant fi de la pruderie de son époque, se laisse aller à coucher avec une jeune femme. Les circonstances sont floues. S’agit-il de séduction ou de viol ? Quoi qu’il en soit, un enfant naît presque huit mois plus tard et meurt quelques jours après. Ce décès n’empêche pas la machine judiciaire ecclésiastique de s’acharner à l’enquête. Poursuivi, Jan Schuermans se réfugie à L’Écluse (Sluis), ville devenue hollandaise en vertu du Traité. Or, voici qu’on découvre d’autres scandales impliquant une moniale et des femmes du village. Condamné et chassé de son village, notre curé se retrouve en fâcheuse posture à Dunkerque, juste au moment de la Bataille des Dunes, repart sur les routes de l’exil et finit ses jours dans les parages de Furnes. Toute sa vie n’est qu’une longue succession d’ambitions frustrées, d’humiliations profondes et de poursuites acharnées. L’auteur excelle à brosser cette tragique « petite histoire » personnelle sur fond d’Histoire avec un grand H. Il évoque d’une part le curé et sa clique d’amis et amies, de l’autre les grands événements de ce dix-septième siècle, dont le dépeçage de la Flandre, disputée entre l’Espagne, la France et les Provinces-Unies. L’auteur exploite un éventail de documents étonnamment riche et varié pour retracer les faits certes mais avant tout pour pénétrer la psychologie des personnages. Il dénonce en même temps la mesquinerie de la Contre-Réforme avec son cortège de haines et de suspicions. Lancinantes, ces paroles de Jan Schuermans : « Je ne voulais pas de quelque chose de vivant ».

    Description: L’œuvre d’André Breton, dans son ensemble, est une Histoire d’eau : elle est irriguée par des fontaines qui surgissent çà et là sous sa plume afin que se réalise son pro-jet de suspendre, en un « point sublime » qui s’avère être un point d’eau, des antinomies telles que le même et l’autre, le haut et le bas, le mouvement et l’immobilité, l’esprit et la matière. Le jet d’eau y apparaît en tant que thème valant par sa forme, ses connotations, ses renvois à d’autres images, sa circularité infinie, son dynamisme incessant, sa tension aporétique entre fluidité et solidité, montée et descente, exultation et abattement, etc. Mais simultanément, il apparaît comme figure valant par sa force, sa valeur seconde, métaphorique, allégorique ou parabolique, sa tendance à l’auto-réflexivité, son aptitude à représenter l’ordre du discours où il surgit. Non seulement thème mais méta-thème, le jet d’eau est l’une des images que véhicule le discours surréaliste tout en étant aussi le principe même dont elles sourdent toutes. Créateur d’images, Breton aime aussi à se pencher sur elles, à les observer et les interroger pour en percer le mystère, au moment même où il survient. Devant l’image du jet d’eau, il est arrêté, ravi en extase, exalté par la figure de son projet.

    Description: En Asie, la genèse des sociétés moderne s’effectue dans une crise permanente. Les transformations ont été introduites ou accélérées de façon plus ou moins forcée, par les états qui avaient fait des pays asiatiques leurs colonies ou les avaient placé dans leurs sphères d’influence économique, politique et culturelle. La soumission des peuples et de leur gouvernement a-t-elle jamais été réelle ? Elle n’a été toujours obtenue qu’à travers des guerres de conquête ; au-delà de celles-ci, les résistances, qu’elles aient été passives ou actives, n’ont pas cessé. La révolte est le réflexe primordial des peuples atteints dans leur indépendance mais plus encore dans l’intégrité de leur être culturel. C’est donc au plus profond de celui-ci que ces peuples puisent leurs références mobilisatrices, à la fois vigoureuses et vulnérables. Ces mythologies souffrent-elles de leur archaïsme ou davantage de ne pas avoir atteint l’universalité des doctrines et des méthodes impérialistes ? Apparemment les révoltes sont vouées à la défaite et, simultanément ou successivement, les réformes sont des tentatives d’éviter le retour des rébellions en réajustant partiellement les politiques aux revendications des groupes sociaux. Est-ce parce que les réformes n’atteignent jamais l’intégralité et la radicalité qu’elles échouent ou du moins perdent de leur efficacité? Les réformes manquées et les révoltes brisées inspirent les projets et les volontés révolutionnaires. La révolution vise au renversement d’une situation de fait mais est-ce sa seule radicalité qui lui insuffle sa force principale ? N’est-ce pas plutôt que les doctrines dont les révolutions s’inspirent : le nationalisme, le panasiatisme, l’islam, le communisme, ont en commum le dépassement des petites patries, des ethnies, des religions naturelles et des sectes. Grâce à elles, la révolution atteint la dimension universelle qui lui permet d’affronter l’impérialisme à armes égales ou presque. La réappropriation de l’indépendance nationale est accompagnée par le dessein de modernisation qui l’apparente à l’impérialisme mais lui permet de se poser en rival et en successeur légitime de ce dernier. C’est pourquoi la révolution, à son tour, engendre des structures qui ne feront pas nécessairement l’unanimité ; la révolte, la réforme et peut-être la révolution ou la contre-révolution existent, au moins virtuellement, dans la société révolutionnée. L’Asie du sud-est est une aire géographique, culturelle et politique beaucoup trop vaste pour que ce volume ait la prétention de la "couvrir". Les travaux rassemblés ici sont une première tentative d’exposer des études de cas sans prétention de théoriser. S’ils en appellent d’autres, ce livre aura prouvé son intérêt.

    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

    Description: La démographie historique est à la mode dans les Université, françaises et il ne s’agit point d’un engouement passager Tenter de bâtir, pur plusieurs approches, une histoire sociale de la vie et de la mort dans ce Nord qui, au xixe siècle est d’une importance capitale pour l’économie européenne, n’est-ce point une lâche passionnante et scientifiquement indispensable ? Marcel Gillet, qui enseigne l’Histoire contemporaine a l’Université de Lille depuis 1954, présente ici en vue de ce grand dessein les premiers travaux de six jeunes historiens devenus depuis Agrégés de l’Université. Après une analyse par Marie-Pascale Buriez-Duez, des principales séries relatives à l’évolution démographique du Nord au xixe siècle, Monique et Charles Engrand étudient les effets meurtriers à Lille de l’épidémie de choléra de 1832 par les craintes qu’elle déchaîne, par les tensions qu’elle fait naître, l’épidémie met en lumière des données essentielles et en particulier la situation habituelle des milieux populaires , elle révèle aussi les antagonismes, les comportements et les mentalités des différents groupes qu’elle atteint ou menace. Aline l.esaégc-Dugied, par l’étude de la mortalité infantile, aborde par un autre biais cette grande caractéristique du xixe siècle, l’inégalité sociale devant la mort et donc la quantité de vie. On mesure combien l’abaissement du taux de mortalité infantile a été difficile et tardif. Pour sa part, Claude Hélène Dewaepenaere souligne que l’existence dans le Nord d’un taux de naissances illégitimes supérieur au taux moyen français peut être autant considérée comme la traduction du refus plus ou moins avoué des normes sociales ou religieuses habituellement acceptées que comme une situation imposée par des circonstances extérieures industrialisation, immigration étrangère par exemple. Enfin, Noëlle Dombrowski-Kéerle, en étudiant l’évolution du taux de divortialité dans le Nord propose une périodisation cl une interprétation de la façon dont les divorces ont progresse et ont été plus ou moins acceptés de 1884 à 1914.

    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: L’ambition est double. Analyser d’abord l’inscription de la mort dans une œuvre de poésie et en dresser le paysage. Ensuite montrer comment la totalité de cette œuvre s’organise en fonction de ce point de vue majeur, la mort, et sortir ainsi du lieu commun énoncé quant à l’œuvre de Jouve, laquelle n’aurait d’autre pivot que le sexe. De cela, il découle une « histoire » de la mort, avec son théâtre d’ombres, et ses coulisses, ses personnages et ses « lustres », ses « machines » et ses décors, une « histoire de la mort » dans l’œuvre qui est histoire de l’œuvre poétique même.

Mais c’est un triomphe au sens où l’entendent les baroques, une pompe funèbre. Si une phénoménologie de la perception vient relayer après coup l’oeuvre de Flaubert, s’ouvrir à elle comme l’un de ses débouchés philosophiques, si l’oeuvre de Flaubert de ce point de vue ne demeure pas sans postérité, c’est une fin en revanche que consacre la réflexion esthétique de Baudelaire.
