    Notes: Abstract The complexes [(OC)4Os(PbMe2)]2 (3) and [(OC)4OsSnBu 2 ′ ]2 (4) have been prepared from be reaction of Na2[Os(CO)4] with Me2PbCl2 and Bu 2 ′ SnCl2, respectively, in THF and their X-ray crystal structures determined. The red derivative,3, was light-sensitive in solution. The reactions or [(OC)4 Os(SnMe2)]2 (2), or its decarbonylated derivative [Os3(CO)7(SnMe2)2]2 (7), with olefins or phosphorus donor ligands have also been investigated, and the structures of two derivatives, viz. [Os2(CO)7(SnMe2)2(C2H4)] (5a) and [Os2(CO)7(SnMe2)2(PMe3)] (6a), have been determined; the noncarbonyl ligand occupies an equatorial site in each case. The X-ray crystal structures of all these compounds, like those of [(OC)4Os(EMe2)]2 (E=Ge (1), Sn (2)) which have been reported previously, show leaning of the axial carbonyl ligands toward the metal tetracycle, i.e., an “umbrella” effect. Crystallographic data for compound3: space group, P21/a;a=13.4404(13) Å,b=10.7494(14) A,c=148967(18) A,β=98.204(9)°,R=0.035, 1983 observed reflections. For compound4: space group,P1;a=9.016(1) Å,b=9.370(1),c=11.334(1) A, α=103.67(1)°,β=100.30(1)°, γ=115.03(1)°, R=0.046, 2026 observed reflections. For compound5a: space group,P1;a=9.2933(11)Å,b=9.7181(3),c=12.2508(15) A, α=89.21(1)°,β=87.61(1)°, γ=86.13(1)°,R=0.038, 2770 observed reflections. For compound6a space groupP1:a=8.7244(9)Å,b=10.9318(6),c=13.2560(13) A, α=87.815(6)°,β=83.655(8)°, γ=82.343(6)°, R=0.030, 3497 observed reflections.

    Notes: Abstract Addition of a THF solution prepared by stirring [CpRu(CO)2]2 over Na/Hg amalgam to a solution of the triplatinum cluster [Pt3(dppm)3(CO)][PF6]2 (1) in THF gives the heteronuclear cluster [Pt3(dppm)3{(μ4-Hg)–RuCp(CO)2}2] [PF6]2 (2) in 40% yield following chromatography. A single crystal X-ray study of 2 reveals structural parameters for the Pt3Hg2 molecular core that are consistent with those of other structurally characterized complexes of this type. 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectra of this complex indicate that the structure observed in the solid state is retained in solution.

    Notes: Abstract Results are presented of optical emission spectroscopy (OES) application asa control tool to improve fly-ash plasma vitrification. A twin-torch plasmasystem has been used for the fly-ash processing, and a new OES method hasexamined metallic vapors above the melt. The method allows the study ofnonhomogeneous optically thin plasmas exhibiting a symmetry plane withoutsophisticated tomographic systems. The dc arc torches are mounted above acold crucible filled with a synthetic glass. The arc intensity is from200 to 400 Å. Argon is introduced into the torches along the cathodeand the anode, while argon, oxygen or hydrogen are injected through thelance between the torches. Local plasma temperatures above the melt havebeen evaluated using measured relative intensities of spectral lines ofthe plasma-forming gas. Metallic vapor concentration in the plasma isdeduced from the intensity ratio of the metal–gas spectral lines. Leadoxide has been used to study heavy-metal behavior at the fly-ash plasmavitrification. Distribution of the lead along the crucible surface,depending on the plasma-forming gas composition as well as the concentrationevolution with time, have been examined. The elemental analysis of theresultant glass has been measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)with energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS). A predictive model has beenadapted to simulate the noncongruent vaporization of heavy metals from themelt. According to the data obtained, steep variations of the volatility ofthe elements depend strongly on reducing properties of gases controllingthe plasma composition near the melted surface. In addition, the melttemperature and the redox potential of the gas phase are found to be themost critical parameters.

    Notes: Abstract From the measurement of the widths of internal oxidation zones in dilute Pb-Sn alloys, the product of the solubility N o (s) and diffusivity Do of oxygen in lead was obtained from 225 to 320° C. The enhancement factor for Sn was calculated from the experimental values of N o (s) Do and compared to the results obtained by x-ray fluorescence measurements. The results indicated that the “aging” of Pb-Sn alloys observed at high temperatures is due to internal oxidation which causes the migration of tin toward the specimen surface.

    Notes: Abstract The cavitation erosion rate for 316 stainless steel in mercury was found to increase in a nonlinear fashion with the maximum applied power. In addition, the incremental increase in erosion was observed to decrease with increased power in water, yet increased six to seven times when mercury was used as the cavitating fluid.
