Notizen: Abstract This paper describes a parallel iterative solver for finite element discretisations of elliptic partial differential equations on 2D and 3D domains using unstructured grids. The discretisation of the PDE is assumed to be given in the form of element stiffness matrices and the solver is automatic in the sense that it requires minimal additional information about the PDE and the geometry of the domain. The solver parallelises matrix–vector operations required by iterative methods and provides parallel additive Schwarz preconditioners. Parallelisation is implemented through MPI. The paper contains numerical experiments showing almost optimal speedup on unstructured mesh problems on a range of four platforms and in addition gives illustrations of the use of the package to investigate several questions of current interest in the analysis of Schwarz methods. The package is available in public domain from the home page http://www.maths.bath.ac.uk/∼mjh/.

    Thema: Mathematik
Notizen: Abstract A unilateral contact problem with a variable coefficient of friction is solved by a simplest variant of the finite element technique. The coefficient of friction may depend on the magnitude of the tangential displacement. The existence of an approximate solution and some a priori estimates are proved.

Notizen: Abstract The space of divergence-free functions with vanishing normal flux on the boundary is approximated by subspaces of finite elements that have the same property. The easiest way of generating basis functions in these subspaces is considered.

Notizen: Abstract We generalize the overlapping Schwarz domain decomposition method to problems of linear elasticity. The convergence rate independent of the mesh size, coarse-space size, Korn's constant and essential boundary conditions is proved here. Abstract convergence bounds developed here can be used for an analysis of the method applied to singular perturbations of other elliptic problems.

Notizen: Abstract Multistep collocation methods for initial value problems in ordinary differential equations are known to be a subclass of multistep Runge-Kutta methods and a generalisation of the well-known class of one-step collocation methods as well as of the one-leg methods of Dahlquist. In this paper we derive an error estimation method of embedded type for multistep collocation methods based on perturbed multistep collocation methods. This parallels and generalizes the results for one-step collocation methods by Nørsett and Wanner. Simple numerical experiments show that this error estimator agrees well with a theoretical error estimate which is a generalisation of an error estimate first derived by Dahlquist for one-leg methods.

Notizen: Abstract A brief survey with a bibliography of superconvergence phenomena in finding a numerical solution of differential and integral equations is presented. A particular emphasis is laid on superconvergent schemes for elliptic problems in the plane employing the finite element method.

    Thema: Mathematik
Notizen: Abstract This paper deals with adapting Runge-Kutta methods to differential equations with a lagging argument. A new interpolation procedure is introduced which leads to numerical processes that satisfy an important asymptotic stability condition related to the class of testproblemsU′(t)=λU(t)+μU(t−τ) with λ, μ ε C, Re(λ)〈−|μ|, and τ〉0. Ifc i denotes theith abscissa of a given Runge-Kutta method, then in thenth stept n−1→t n :=t n−1+h of the numerical process our interpolation procedure computes an approximation toU(t n−1+c i h−τ) from approximations that have already been generated by the process at pointst j−1+c i h(j=1,2,3,...). For two of these new processes and a standard process we shall consider the convergence behaviour in an actual application to a given, stiff problem.

Notizen: Summary Two problems are considered in the paper: the first of them is connected with elliptic variational inequalities and consists in developing a moving obstacle algorithm for approximating the unknown free boundary; the other problem is linked with numerical solution of the Stefan problem, which is formulated in the similar way as in the elliptic case. Some computational aspects are also discussed in the paper.

Notizen: Summary Several regularization methods for parabolic equations backwards in time together with the usual additional constraints for their solution are considered. The error of the regularization is estimated from above and below. For a “boundary value problem in time”-method, finite elements as well as a time discretization are introduced and the error with respect to the regularized solution is estimated, thus giving an overall error of the discrete regularized problem. The algorithm is tested in simple numerical examples.
