Notes: Abstract Microwave video detection (demodulation) studies were carried out on high-T c thin films at 64 K. The amplitudes of the video detection signal varies linearly with incident microwave power. The microwave response shows a peak at an optimum bias current. The shape analysis of the demodulated signal indicates the nonbolometric nature of the detector.

Notes: Abstract Analytic expressions for the electrodynamics of TEM radiation normally incident upon a superconducting film-metallic substrate system are derived in the good conductor approximation. These expressions include the fields, surface impedance, and power dissipation in both the superconducting (or lossy dielectric) film and the metallic substrate. The sum of the power dissipating in the film and in the substrate--in the continuum approximation and in the steady-state limit--is shown to be in agreement with over 30 significant figures with an independent calculation that also employs the good conductor approximation.

Notes: Abstract A basic principle of pulse radar reflectometry is considered in this paper. A numerical analysis is performed in order to study errors appearing due to the expansion of a microwave pulse reflected from the plasma. A block diagram of the basic pulse radar scheme and its overall performance is presented. The first experimental results obtained on T11-M tokamak are discussed. An improved pulse radar scheme with cross-detection is considered. The results of bench test experiments and future applications of this scheme are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The coherent scattering of a microwave beam is considered as a diagnostic tool for monitoring the penetration of the lower hybrid heating waves in a plasma. A set up using a 2 mm wavelength has been installed on the Wega torus. Preliminary experimental data are reported and discussed. The amplitude of the electron density fluctuations has been found lower than the one we expected. The variation of the wave amplitude as the plasma density varies, qualitatively agrees with a cold plasma electromagnetic theory. The feasibility of the measurements was checked and indications of some improvements to be made in the diagnostic method came out. Some important topics (both theoretical and practical) in scattering experiments on L.H. heating waves are reviewed.

Notes: Abstract In the course of developing a low-power, tuneable millimeter-wave source, two gyrotrons have been constructed. Gyrotron I was a fixed-frequency device operating at 120 GHz while Gyrotron II produced more than 20 lines in the frequency range 130 to 260 GHz. The design of tuneable gyrotrons is discussed with reference to the Gyrotron II results.

Notes: Abstract A gyrotron energy transfer equation for the interaction of an annular electron beam in a right-cylindrical cavity has been derived by a rigorous method similar to the one used by Choe and Ahn to find a gyrotron dispersion equation. This new energy transfer equation makes no assumption about the size of the electron orbits. The importance of various terms is discussed and the expression is applied to a number of interesting special cases.

Notes: Abstract The scattering of 2 mm radiation by the density fluctuation associated with lower hybrid waves is used to localize the injected waves within a cross-section of the plasma. A translating antenna setup scores a region extending from the center of the plasma to the boundary with two fixed scattering angles. The measured amplitudes allow one to determine the local value of certain spectral components of n" in the plasma.

Notes: Abstract The implementation of reflectometry as a means of measuring plasma density is examined in relation to the reversed-field pinch machine. The effects of magnetic shear and density fluctuations are studied. Ray-tracing and simulation results are presented and the proposed reflectometer system for the RFX reversed-field pinch machine is described.
