Description: This volume focuses on contacts between Anatolian languages within and outside Anatolia. The selected essays, written by members of ongoing research projects on Anatolian languages, present case studies from both the first and second millennia. These include etymological and morphophonological investigations within the framework of Graeco-Anatolian contacts, as well as a critical essay on the possible Anatolian-Etruscan contacts. Alongside strictly linguistic analysis, the essays cover different aspects of cultural contacts (the origin of the word for ‘salt’ in Luwian), toponyms (in Lycia), and religion (the god called King of Kaunos), and are introduced with a detailed overview of the origins of the Anatolian linguistic landscape.

Description: These are good times for research on Phrygian. More scholars than ever are focusing on this language and many novelties (including new inscriptions and innovative interpretations) are emerging relatively frequently. Promoting the diversity of starting point and focuses is a way to improve our knowledge and to achieve a better vision of the Phrygian language and the people who once spoke and wrote it. This book offers a range of approaches to Phrygian-related issues, with contributions from six relevant scholars working on this language (Ignasi-Xavier Adiego, Milena Anfosso, María Paz de Hoz, Anna Elisabeth Hämmig, Bartomeu Obrador-Cursach an Zsolt Simon).

Description: During the early modern period, thousands of Jesuits across Europe wrote individual applications for appointments in the “Indies” directly to the superior general of the Society of Jesus in Rome. Known today as litterae indipetae (from Indias petere, that is, applying for the missions in the Eastern and Western territories), these letters encompassed the most personal desires, hopes, and dreams of young Jesuits who sought to become missionaries. This book is the first English monograph on litterae indipetae and studies their style and structure, the background of their authors and the reasons behind their choices, as well as the network surrounding this practice (natural and spiritual families, procurators, confrères). Its purpose is also to capture the experiences of these individuals since lost to history by studying thousands of indipetae, in this case written mainly by Italian Jesuits at the turn of the eighteenth century. It focuses especially on the petitions aimed at East Asia, and offers in-depth analysis of cases of Jesuits whose missionary zeal for China and Japan was fulfilled—or not.

Description: The ancient Near Eastern city of Emar (also called Imar)—modern Old Meskene (Meskene Qadima) or Tell Meskene—was discovered in the course of rescue excavations conducted during the construction of a dam near Tabqa, in northern Syria. Between 1972 and 1976, excavations were carried out by a French team. Archaeological activities were resumed in 1991, first by the Department of Antiquities in Aleppo, and then from 1996 to 2002 by a joint Syrian-German mission. During the French excavations, more than 1100 clay tablets—or fragments of tablets—were discovered, most of them written in Akkadian and Sumerian, covering a wide range of genres. Illegal digs—that took place after the French team left the site—also produced about 350 tablets. The material can be dated approximately to the second half of the 2nd millennium BC, i.e., the Late Bronze Age. The extraordinary importance of the Emar texts led to the development of an international and very productive field of research that goes beyond disciplinary boundaries. Against this background, the idea of a thematically organised bibliography of studies on Emar was born in the early 2000s and published in eight issues in the journal Ugarit-Forschungen. The 50th anniversary of the start of the excavations at Emar is a good opportunity to make the entire bibliography available in book form. To the usual thematic outline, a list of book reviews has been added, as well as a complete bibliographical list, arranged by author.

Description: Why devote a Companion to the "mirrors for princes", whose very existence is debated? These texts offer key insights into political thoughts of the past. Their ambiguous, problematic status further enhances their interest. And although recent research has fundamentally challenged established views of these texts, until now there has been no critical introduction to the genre. This volume therefore fills this important gap, while promoting a global historical perspective of different “mirrors for princes” traditions from antiquity to humanism, via Byzantium, Persia, Islam, and the medieval West. This Companion also proposes new avenues of reflection on the anchoring of these texts in their historical realities. Contributors are Makram Abbès, Denise Aigle, Olivier Biaggini, Hugo Bizzarri, Charles F. Briggs, Sylvène Edouard, Jean-Philippe Genet, John R. Lenz, Louise Marlow, Cary J. Nederman, Corinne Peneau, Stéphane Péquignot, Noëlle-Laetitia Perret, Günter Prinzing, Volker Reinhardt, Hans-Joachim Schmidt, Tom Stevenson, Karl Ubl, and Steven J. Williams.

Description: This volume explores various approaches to study vernacular books and reading practices across Europe in the 15th-16th centuries. Through a shared focus on the material book as an interface between producers and users, the contributors investigate how book producers conceived of their target audiences and how these vernacular books were designed and used. Three sections highlight connections between vernacularity and materiality from distinct perspectives: real and imagined readers, mobility of texts and images, and intermediality. The volume brings contributions on different regions, languages, and book types into dialogue. Contributors include Heather Bamford, Tillmann Taape, Stefan Matter, Suzan Folkerts, Karolina Mroziewicz, Martha W. Driver, Alexa Sand, Elisabeth de Bruijn, Katell Lavéant, Margriet Hoogvliet, and Walter S. Melion.
