    Description: The Holy Scripture was used as a form of pre- and postbaptismal catechesis in early medieval Constantinople. This volume presents an examination of the theological content communicated to catechumens through the Bible, and also the role of Scripture in Christian families and in the school system of Constantinople. Die Heilige Schrift wurde zu einer Grundlage für die christliche Unterweisung in Konstantinopel, indem sie im Gottesdienst zu jedem Tauftermin sowie nach der Taufe eine Art der Katechese darstellte. Zudem galt die Bibel als eine Basis für Erziehungs- bzw. Bildungszwecke in Konstantinopel. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet aus theologischer Perspektive die etablierten Bibeltexte in der artifiziell zu verstehenden Zeitperiode zwischen dem 7. und dem 10. Jh., in der ein steigender Rekurs auf die patristische Schriftauslegung zu beobachten ist. Diese trug neben der Überlieferung des eindrücklichen theologischen Gehalts auch zur aktiven Einbettung der Schrift in liturgische Riten bei. Neben der Aufteilung der alttestamentlichen Perikopen fokussiert sich die vorliegende Untersuchung auf einige Evangeliumstexte, die sich als eine postbaptismale Katechese erwiesen. In einem abschließenden Beitrag wird die Rolle der Psalmen im Schulwesen und in den christlichen Familien untersucht.

    Description: Dreams within dreams remind us of the treacherous nature of reality. This first comparative study on the subject reveals the diversity of dream-within-a-dream structures. Works of literature, film, TV series and comics from different cultures are analysed in close readings, uncovering their often complex and ambiguous shape. They are also placed in a broader cultural history of the dream. Der Traum im Traum kann Potenzierung des Traums sein oder in Abgründe falschen Erwachens führen. Diese erste komparatistische Monografie zu der Thematik zeigt nicht nur das Spektrum der Formen, sondern auch ihre Anbindung an grundlegende Fragen nach der Zuverlässigkeit der Wahrnehmung und der Realität der Welt. Im Rahmen der vergleichenden Untersuchung von Werken aus Literatur, Film, Fernsehserie und Comic aus diversen kulturellen Kontexten zeigt sich der Traum im Traum in all seinen Gestalten. Diese werden dabei in strukturalistischer Tradition als Traum-im-Traum-Strukturen begriffen. Zahlreiche Einzeluntersuchungen oft komplexer und ambivalenter Beispiele bilden neben Einblicken in die Literaturgeschichte des Traum im Traum den Kern des Buches. Unter Rückgriff auf Methoden der Narratologie, der Phantastiktheorie und der kulturwissenschaftlichen Beschreibung von Traumdarstellungen entsteht ein umfassendes Bild dieses Phänomens.

    Description: Wer interpretiert, tut etwas. Dieser schlichte Umstand trat mit dem practice turn verstärkt in den Fokus hermeneutischer bzw. interpretationstheoretischer Debatten. Wo steht die Diskussion heute? Wohin soll sie sich bewegen? Als primärer Gegenstand der Hermeneutik erschien lange relativ klar eine Top-down-Reflexion auf die Natur von Erkenntnis, Verstehen und Interpretation. Das hat sich mit dem practice turn geändert. Durch diese zuerst seitens der Wissenschaftsgeschichte und der Sozialwissenschaften kultivierte Umorientierung kommt verstärkt der Bereich des konkreten Interpretationshandelns in den Blick. Die Aufmerksamkeit gilt, bottom-up, den Routinen der Bedeutungsproduktion - und dies insbesondere auch, wo die betreffenden kleinteiligen Praktiken nicht durch Methoden, sondern durch eine implizite und informelle Logik bestimmt sind. Der Sammelband lädt dazu ein, diesen produktiven turn im interdisziplinären Austausch zu bedenken und weiter voranzutreiben. Anyone who interprets does something. But it has only become a focus of hermeneutical debates since the practice turn. What is emphasized here is no longer the bottom up “nature” of understanding and interpretation, but the actual doing interpretation – especially where the practices in question are determined not by methods, but by implicit and informal logic. This volume considers where the debate is today, and where it is supposed to move.

    Description: This book collects ten of Sandra Huebenthal’s most important contributions to the application of Social Memory Theory in Biblical studies. The volume consists of four parts, each devoted to a particular field of research. Part one addresses the general impact of Social Memory Theory for the New Testament. The second part analyzes how Social Memory Theory adds to exploring the phenomenon of (biblical) intertextuality as a strategy for negotiating Early Christian identity and the third part investigates how New Testament pseudepigraphy provides a different approach for understanding the negotiation and formation of Christian identities. Finally, part four provides an outlook how the hermeneutical approach can enhance Patristic research. The ten essays originate from discussions about Social Memory Theory and the New Testament at international conferences, three of them are translations of German contributions, while two are published for the first time in this volume.

    Description: Historical criticism of the Bible emerged in the context of protestant theology and is confronted in every aspect of its study with otherness: the Jewish people and their writings. However, despite some important exceptions, there has been little sustained reflection on the ways in which scholarship has engaged, and continues to engage, its most significant Other. This volume offers reflections on anti-Semitism, philo-Semitism and anti-Judaism in biblical scholarship from the 19th century to the present.     Description: The ERC-funded research project BuddhistRoad aims to create a new framework to enable understanding of the complexities in the dynamics of cultural encounter and religious transfer in pre-modern Eastern Central Asia. Buddhism was one major factor in this exchange: for the first time the multi-layered relationships between the trans-regional Buddhist traditions (Chinese, Indian, Tibetan) and those based on local Buddhist cultures (Khotanese, Uyghur, Tangut) will be explored in a systematic way. The second volume Buddhism in Central Asia II—Practice and Rituals, Visual and Materials Transfer based on the mid-project conference held on September 16th–18th, 2019, at CERES, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany) focuses on two of the six thematic topics addressed by the project, namely on "practices and rituals", exploring material culture in religious context such as mandalas and talismans, as well as “visual and material transfer”, including shared iconographies and the spread of ‘Khotanese’ themes.

    Description: Arnold Geulincx (1624-1669) is a key figure in the history of ideas, whose concepts have been seen as precursors to those developed by Spinoza, Malebranche, Leibniz and Kant. His Ethics presents a treatment of virtue from the standpoint of occasionalist metaphysics. The great Irish writer Samuel Beckett stated that Geulincx, with his emphasis on the powerlessness and ignorance of the human condition, was a key influence on his works. This is the first complete version of the text to appear in a modern language. It includes the full text of the Ethics and Beckett’s notes to his reading of Geulincx. Shedding new light on important moments of intellectual history, it is a major event for students of philosophy and literature.
