Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: For effusive volcanoes in resource-poor regions, there is a pressing need for a crisis response-chain bridging the global scientific community to allow provision of standard products for timely humanitarian response. As a first step in attaining this need, this Special Publication provides a complete directory of current operational capabilities for monitoring effusive eruptions. This volume also reviews the state-of-the-art in terms of satellite-based volcano hot-spot tracking and lava-flow simulation. These capabilities are demonstrated using case studies taken from well-known effusive events that have occurred worldwide over the last two decades at volcanoes such as Piton de la Fournaise, Etna, Stromboli and Kilauea. We also provide casetype response models implemented at the same volcanoes, as well as the results of a community-wide drill used to test a fully-integrated response focused on an operational hazard-GIS. Finally, the objectives and recommendations of the ‘Risk Evaluation, Detection and Simulation during Effusive Eruption Disasters’ working group are laid out in a statement of community needs by its members

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The subduction zone volatile cycle is key to understanding the petrogenesis, transport, storage and eruption of arc magmas. Volatiles control the flux of slab components into the mantle wedge, are responsible for melt generation through lowering the solidi of mantle materials and influence the crystallizing phase assemblages in the overriding crust. Further, the rates and extents of degassing during magma storage and decompression affect magma rheology, ultimately control eruption style and have consequences for the environmental impact of explosive arc volcanism. This book highlights recent progress in constraining the role of volatiles in magmatic processes. Individual book sections are devoted to tracing volatiles from the subducting slab to the overriding crust, their role in subvolcanic processes and eruption triggering, as well as magmatic-hydrothermal systems and volcanic degassing. For the first time, all aspects of the overarching theme of volatile cycling are covered in detail within a single volume.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Orogenic andesites have long intrigued scientists because of their remarkable compositional similarities to the continental crust. The significance of orogenic andesites as proxies to continental crust formation has been recognized for over 30 years, but no consensus model of andesite genesis exists. Much of the controversy revolves around whether orogenic andesites are primary melts of slab and mantle materials, or instead evolve from basaltic mantle melts at shallower crustal levels. In three sections, this book provides an overview of andesite genesis at convergent margins that focuses on the slab mantle interaction, crustal processing and andesite evolution through the life of volcanic arcs. Without favouring a particular view, the books aims to engender cross-fertilization and discussion that will smooth the pathway towards a holistic communal model of andesite petrogenesis and its role within the broader geochemical cycles of the Earth.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Antarctica preserves a rock record that spans three and a half billion years of history and has a remarkable story to tell about the evolution of our Earth, from the hottest crustal rocks yet found in an orogenic system, to the assembly and breakup of Gondwana in the Phanerozoic. This volume highlights our improved understanding of the tectonic events that have shaped Antarctica and how these potentially relate to supercontinent assembly and fragmentation. The internal constitution of the East Antarctic Shield is assessed using information available from the basement geology and from detritus preserved as Mesozoic sediments in the Trans Antarctic Mountains. Accretionary orogenesis along the proto-Pacific margin of Antarctica is examined and the volumes of intracrustal melting compared with juvenile magma additions in these complex orogenic systems assessed. This volume demonstrates the diversity of approaches required to elucidate and understand crustal evolution and evaluate the supercontinent concept.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Professor Richard (Rick) Sibson revolutionized structural geology by illustrating that fault rocks contain an integrated record of earthquakes. Fault-rock textures develop in response to geological and physical variables such as composition, environmental conditions (e.g. temperature and pressure), fluid presence and strain rate. These parameters also determine the rate- and state-variable frictional stability of a fault, the dominant mineral deformation mechanism and shear strength, and ultimately control the partitioning between seismic and aseismic deformation. This volume contains a collection of papers that address the geological record of earthquake faulting from field-based or theoretical perspectives. The papers cover observations in active fault zones, the relationships between fault rocks and fault-slip styles, interpretation of fault-rock textures from the base of the seismogenic zone, consideration of the effects of fluids on faulting, discussion of fault reactivation v. initiation, and a review of future directions in geological earthquake research by Professor Sibson.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Despite agreement on first-order features and mechanisms, critical aspects of the origin and evolution of the Tibetan Plateau, such as the exact timing and nature of collision, the initiation of plateau uplift, and the evolution of its height and width, are disputed, untested or unknown. This book gathers papers dealing with the growth and collapse of the Tibetan Plateau. The timing, the underlying mechanisms, their interactions and the induced surface shaping, contributing to the Tibetan Plateau evolution are tightly linked via coupled and feedback processes. We present interdisciplinary contributions allowing insight into the complex interactions between lithospheric dynamics, topography building, erosion, hydrological processes and atmospheric coupling. The book is structured in four parts: early processes in the plateau formation; recent growth of the Tibetan Plateau; mechanisms of plateau growth; and plateau uplift, surface processes and the monsoon.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Several different databases and models have been developed over many years of petrological study carried out by several European and non-European groups on mantle xenoliths, peridotite massifs, ophiolites and mafic magmas spanning in age from Archaean to Recent times. This volume aims to bring together these different approaches and to integrate the geochemical perceptions of the European upper mantle. The papers include regional petrological studies of the European lithospheric mantle, from Spain to the Pannonian Basin, from Corsica and Serbia as far north as Svalbard. Six contributions are based on studies of mantle xenoliths, while the remaining three deal with ophiolitic and peridotitic complexes. A further article provides an update on the textural classification of mantle rocks using a computer-aided approach and there is an introductory overview.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Iterative comparison of analytical results and natural observations with predictions of numerical models improves interpretation of geological processes. Further refinements derive from wide-angle comparison of results from various scales of study. In this volume, advances from field, laboratory and modelling approaches to tectonic evolution from the lithosphere to the rock scale - are compared. Constructive use is made of apparently discrepant or non-consistent results from analytical or methodological approaches in processing field or laboratory data, P-T estimates, absolute or relative age determinations of tectonic events, tectonic unit size in crustal scale deformation, grain-scale deformation processes, various modelling approaches, and numerical techniques. Advances in geodynamic modelling critically depend on new insights into grain- and subgrain-scale deformation processes. Conversely, quantitative models help to identify which rheological laws and parameters exert the strongest control on multi-scale deformation up to lithosphere and upper mantle scale.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: It has long been suggested that there is a causal link between volcanic activity and Quaternary environmental change. Earlier work pointed to the volcanic activity driving large-scale Quaternary glacial fluctuations. However, a growing body of evidence lends weight to the converse view that Quaternary environmental changes resulted in increased volcanic activity. Using tephra layers as chronological horizons, researchers have begun to suggest that these volcanic events may have produced not only short-term climate changes but also variations in regional vegetation patterns and in the distribution of society. A full understanding of the complex interaction between volcanic activity and Quaternary environmental change requires the collaboration of both volcanologists and Quaternary scientists. Volcanoes in the Quaternary brings together papers from workers in both fields and reflects the diversity of current research. The papers are grouped geographically and focus on New Zealand’s North Island, the East African Rift Valley, the Mediterranean and Iceland. They cover the determination of eruptive chronologies, discuss the impacts on local vegetation and society, outline the importance of tephrostratigraphic records and provide detailed studies of hazard assessment.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The Physics of Explosive Volcanic Eruptions includes seven review papers that outline our current understanding of several aspects of the physical processes affecting magma during volcanic eruptions. An introductory chapter highlights research areas where our understanding is incomplete, or even completely lacking, and where work needs advancing if our knowledge of volcanic processes is to be substantially improved. The book covers topics on the physical properties of silicic magma, vesiculation processes, conduit flow and fragmentation, gas loss from magmas during eruption, models of volcanic eruption columns, tephra dispersal and pyroclastic density currents.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Geoscientists need to familiarize themselves with the characteristics of actual plate motions. A popular, current thesis relates the state of stress to the degree of coupling of the two convergent plates. Recent two-dimentional, finite element modelling has demonstrated how the stress in the overriding plate is critically dependent on wether the subduction zone is locked (i.e. high degree of coupling) or unlocked. Thus the compressional stress regime occurs in locked systems, and extensional strees in unlocked systems; a gradient from compression in the fore-arc to extension in the back-arc is said to characterize partially locked system. However, studies of the strain field in real cases (modern arc regions) clearly indicate the prevalence of subhorizontal extension orientated nearly perpendicular to the arc. Implicit in these real observations is the suggestion that stresses resulting from plate coupling are either not transmitted to the volcanic arc, or else locked subduction zones are uncommon and extension may be the normal mode of behaviour. The rationale and evidence for extension and coeval volcanism at consuming plate margins is presented. Using mainly Cenozoic case histories for oceanic and continental margin arcs, structural evidence is presented, which demonstrates that volcanism in most arc systems is contemporaneous with normal faulting and subsidence as a general case. Representive, modern geochemical data sets are provided and integrated in a petrological discussion for each case history. The western Pacific, now widely regard as a type region for the study of convergent plate margin processes, is particularly well represented. Also included is evidence from less commonly insvestigated regions, where subduction has ceased or is no longer obvious but an association with an arc is unequivocal. By these means, it is hoped that this volume contains a representative cross-section of current research on extension-related arc volcanism in broadest sense, and that it will stimulate further discussion and research into the complex tectonics and petrology of covergent plate margins.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This volume is a collection of papers to celebrate the life and work of Professor lan Gass. The research themes cover many of the subjects which most interested him, especially processes operating in oceanic crust. The introductory papers examine evolution of magmas from mantle melting to eruption. A central section concerns ophiolite complexes. Several papers focus on different aspects of the Troodos ophiolite complex in Cyprus, where lan first recognized that sheeted dykes within the ophiolite sequence must have formed in an oceanic spreading environment. In addition, ophiolites ,are reviewed and examined in terms of tectonics, magmatic and mantle textures, metallogenesis and hydrothermal alteration. A further section concentrates on tectonics and the genesis of magmas associated with collision and subduction. This contrasts with continental rifting and the effects of mantle plumes. This collection of papers covers a broad range of topics from processes in the mantle to those in the oceanic crust. The volume will be of interest to all scientists concerned with igneous processes and global tectonics.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: "...represents a timely and welcome contribution to the field as it comprises semi-review articles dealing with magma generation and break-up processes, as well as syntheses from selected examples of CFB provinces. In addition there are several case studies (both geochemical and geophysical) which examine specific issues in detail. Even in isolation many of these articles are exceptionally useful, either as distillations of current thinking, or as new contributions of ideas and~or data. Together, however, they combine to create a comprehensive volume covering much of our present understanding.., of the causal relationships between lithospheric extension, rifting, thermal anomalies and magmatism. 'Janet Hergt in Chemical Geology, vol. 109, p356 '...should be within reach of all geoscientists seriously interested in continental flood volcanism and mechanisms of continental break-up. It provides a fascinating picture of the current state of knowledge of continental break-up on a global scale and highlights the complexity of the driving forces of break-up and the origins of associated basaltic rocks... In general, this is an important book which provides a solid foundation for developing understanding of modern continental rift tectonics and for the interpretation of continental rift geology and magmatism in the geological record. Every university geology library should buy it.' G. Wheller in Australian Geologist No 88, p41 '...breadth of subject matter, the diversity of the authors and the speed of publication all conspire to make this an excellent 'research in progress' volume. This is not a collection of similar papers reporting a consensual view, but a far more useful picture of the state of the art. In particular, it covers both the well-known examples of continent break-up apparently related to 'plume' magmatism, as well as examples where break-up manifestly has nothing to do with hot upwellings... This book should be in every library of Earth Science.' D. Pyle in Geological Magazine, vol. 131, p732 '...provides a wealth of information and stimulating ideas for geologists interested in breakup tectonics, magmatism and stratigraphy.., should be a required acquisition for university and research libraries.'
